I booked a child's manicure as a treat for the 1st day back to school. When we came in the lady kept trying to get my daughter to choose a gel manicure which was 42$ instead od $20 and was not what I had booked. She was very pushy and RUDE to both of us! When I told her regular manicure only she took her to get it done and my daughter said the lady doing it kept trying more to get her to change her mind and get gels. She told her it would chip in 3 days if she didn't do it. When I went to pay she said a child's manicure is only to age 10 and my daughter is 12 so I had to pay the adult price. Overall this was an unpleasant experience instead of a special treat! Won't be back!!!! read more

I went with a friend and I was the only one going to get my nails done but they asked her 5-10 times about getting her nails before they finally left her alone. As I was getting my nails done some workers and customers were walking around without a mask. I got a full set of acrylic gel nails and I love the way they looked but the nail tech was getting annoyed with me. Before we began doing my nails he just put his air pods in and didn't bother talking to either of us. While I was talking to my friend I kept moving the hand he wasn't working on and he would just keep telling me to stop moving it even though I wasn't moving the other hand. Towards the end when he was painting my nails he was pulling on my finger so I moved my hand closer to him and he looked up at me rolled his eyes, made a grunting noise and then grabbed my wrist and pushed it back which I thought was pretty rude. After he finish I handed him one of my cards and he went to ask if they accepted that kind which they did not so I grabbed another one and handed it to him and instead of walking over again and asking he just started yelling out the his coworker what type of card I had and the bank which I thought was not ok. And then finally after he handed me my card back and I had to sign and he was standing next to me to see if I gave him a tip or not, not giving me the 6 feet space. I've been to this place before and I would go back but I would get recommend getting them done by a female tech. read more

Honestly, I had high hopes from this place. First of all, prices are different. I paid $50 for bad nails. The guy who did them didn't shape them correctly and yes that was my fault for not speaking up but how do you correct someone when it's their job.. idk maybe that's just me. Anyways, the nail polish wasn't dry enough two hours after that I messed them up. I ended up removing the nail polish, filing them to the best of my ability to get a nicer shape, and ended up doing gel polish. It's literally been 5 days, FIVE and the nails are already removable from the sides & getting stuck on my hair like if they're 2-3 weeks old. Don't get it twisted, it might've just been the guy I got because my friend got hers done by someone else and are perfectly fine. Oh and I noticed he used unsanitary tools for me. They had residue from previous client(s). Big no from me. Update: two easily came off after I showered. Not happy. read more

Everyone is so friendly and seems like they have a lot of returning customers as people kept coming in and were remembered by first name basis and seemed to be friends with the staff. The reason I'm leaving this review is because of how great my gel manicure was. I always hate when you go to get your nails done and they start the polish so far away from your cuticle, in two days it's all grown out and doesn't look pretty anymore. This is my go to nail place in SB! I've gotten my acrylics done by Ryan, Lynn and Ruby and every time they've looked great. Prices are fair for Santa Barbara and I always love how my nails look that I think it's worth it :) They really care about how you want your nails to look and make sure that everything looks perfect. My only minor complaint is that scheduling/timing is a bit meh. Even when I've made same day appointments I had to wait a few times because of walk-ins. I've also been there longer than planned because acrylics and fills always take longer than I anticipate. The techs also work long after closing time! Got my nails done at 6:45 and my poor technician had to immediately start on someone else's nails because one of her previous clients was late and it threw off all the timing. Despite all this I'll continue coming here because they do great work and it's hard to find a nail place I really like in the area. read more

They only have one technician named Edith that is worth anything. No one knows how to do acrylic they don't hire people that can do acrylic. If Edith is working on you then you're safe. If you are interested in dip manicures Modern Nails needs to be your go to spot!! I just moved to Santa Barbara and was looking for a new place to get my nails done at. I was very interested in a dip manicure as I have weak nails that break all of the time. I had gotten one a week ago at a different salon and it turned out horrible. The powder was all the way up to my cuticles and the corners were already cracking away so I had no choice but to rip them off. My nails were paper thin and in a horrible state after that. I was weary about having to experiment with my nails again but Vicky at Modern Nails took quick notice and was so gentle with my nails during my whole manicure. I am very meticulous and picky and for the first time in my life, I can say I got the perfect dip manicure. The bumps, no lifting, no ridges. So smooth, shiny, and natural looking. On the spur of the moment I walked in here for a mani-pedi just before christmas whilst visiting Santa Barbara. I had an american nail manicure which was nicely painted on, and lasted 4 weeks without chipping. In general the staff here are pleasant enough,and do a good enough job on your nails, the vibe in the salon is so-so, decor is nothing special,and for one reason or another this is just not the kind of place where you feel you can completely relax and chill with a mag while they pretty up your nails. read more

My usual salon was closed for the holiday but I needed my nails done for my wedding so I booked an appointment here after a friend's recommendation. I have been getting dip gel on my nails regularly for a few years now and I have never had them look so bad in my life. I would like to point out that I made it very clear that I was getting my nails done for my wedding the following day, hoping that would make the technician be extra careful. The gentleman did not ask me what nail shape or length I preferred before he began filing and I am not quite sure if he even knew what he was going for-some nails are squared, some are unevenly coffin shaped. The surface of the nails are drastically uneven and have spots that are quite noticeably thicker than the other parts of the nail. At one point he hit my nail against the powder container leaving a large indent and he did not fix the mistake. It has been three days and the nails are already chipping (I have never had dip gel chip before two weeks and usually they don't chip at all) and they have a somewhat tacky finish which may be a testament to the products they are using. The gentleman ignored me when I spoke to him and tried to make conversation, however the gal doing my pedicure was kind and did a decent job, hence the extra star. I would highly recommend going to Yvonne's just a couple blocks away. read more

I would say I'm super picky with my nails. Ruby at modern nails is the best!! I told her what I wanted and she executed it perfectly. My nails have never looked better. I don't like my nails thick, so she went with the dip powder technique and let me tell you ladies and Gent... it's amazing! They feel Sturdy yet still thin! Couldn't have asked for a better nail spa, I was staying in town for a party and last minute decided to get pampered and they not only took me last minute, a walk-in, but it was late in the evening! Took my sister here on our way home from wine tasting in Los Olivos. It was a Saturday afternoon, around 2pm and we did not have an appointment. The place looked a little busy when we walked in but we waited no longer than 10 minutes to be seated for our pedicures. The lady that did my names (I never got her name) was very easy and didn't scrub the crap out of my feet like some places I've been. I've very ticklish so sometimes it's hard to tolerate. But she did a good job. Color is still on my toes with no chipping and it's been two days. I know, it's only been two days, but usually my toes chip by the end of the first day. The lady to did my sisters pedicure seemed to be a little more preoccupied and kept leaving. This annoyed my sister but in the end my sister was happy with the outcome. I'd go here again if I lived closer or maybe on anther trip to Santa Barbara. They got us in right away and were very nice. In fact, the lady sitting next to me was getting her toes and nails done and one of the staff bought her a flower bouquet because it was her birthday. How nice. ;) read more

I've been going with my family to this salon for 10 years and have never been disappointed. Everyone is incredibly nice and so detailed when doing there job. I've never walked out not feeling 100 percent happy with my nails. They have an amazing team and such a huge selection when it comes to nail polish colors. And most important is the selection of gel polish. I personally go to get silk wrap with gel which can be quite a process but it's so worth it. My nails are never bulky and look so natural. The waiting period was very short but there was a very small selection of nail colors. The man that did my nails was very quite and was rude every time I would move the slightest bit. My friends organized a spa day for me prior to my wedding day. There were approximately 14 of us in the salon and 10 of us who were getting our nails done. We were thrilled with the overall experience. The staff was very nice, fun to speak with and very accomodating of our needs. The salon permitted us to have food & drinks and take many photos. We were there for a little over 2 hours and were a noisy bunch but they were accomodating and even laughed along with us. I got a gel mani-pedi and I LOVED both people that did the work. My gel mani-pedi has lasted me 2 weeks now and it looks as though I just got my nails done yesterday. The only thing to be aware of is if they ask you if you want a salt scrub or callus removal they will charge you extra. Some places try to upsell you and tell you the price, but they did not tell you the price here. I was surprised when I found out at the end when I was paying my bill that there was an additional fee to my gel mani/pedi. I also wouldn't recommend the salt scrub or callus removal because it didn't do much for me. They offer a 10% discount if you pay in cash but you MUST ask in advance. The facility was clean and parking was very easy. Overall I had an amazing experience here and would highly recommend this place! read more

I had 2 different experiences at this salon. I went for a mani-pedi. I sat down in the chair for the pedi and the girl was super nice but one of the guys there was very aggressive about trying to make me add a scrub/longer massage etc. when I said I wanted a basic pedi. Once that was settled I decided to add a mani since he said he could do it at the same time. Manicure review-It was super rushed. He didn't allow for my nails to be soaked so when he was cleaning up my cuticles it was painful. He seemed annoyed to be working and my cuticles were done poorly. He spent 10 seconds filing my nails and the polish wasn't closed at the tip so my nails chipped after a few hours. Pedicure review- Nice pedi. Quick but that's what I wanted and my nails look great and Linda who did my nails was sweet. My basic pedi was $30 and didn't include a salt scrub. They had a decent color selection and had me seated quickly. I'll go back for a pedi but will try someone else for a mani. read more
