I went in to this salon as a first time client judging by the looks of the place it seemed like they knew what they were doing. Well when I go to my "appt" they tell me sit at any open seat someone will be right with me. They don't assign you to anyone when you make an appt unless you know who you want they don't have levels of stylist to choose from like most places so there's really no point in making an appt. So I meet the "stylist" and told me her name (can't remember her name) she is a heavy set middle eastern women with accent. So I showed her a picture of what I wanted bc I always come prepared to my appt so they know what I want, so I told her I wanted an ombré. I have dark hair so I picked an ombre with darker blonde bc I knew it wasn't going to lift completely which she also mentioned which I was fine with. So when she started with my hair I noticed her doing a freehand bayalage technique total opposite of an ombré she mentioned that she was doing a "different technique" bc it's faster. I trusting the hairstylist that is certified in doing hair let her continue. Now I'm no expert in ombre but I have gotten ombré in the past ALL places doing the same technique tease up and apply the bleach, so as we finally finish with the whole process I go to wash my hair they add the toner and go straight for the cut which btw came out decent can't complain. Then someone else came to curl my hair when you have an ombré everyone knows you do loose curls well she started doing curls that I ended up looking like Annie. I paid my 120 that I was quoted and went home upset bc she gave me tight curls I went home washed my hair so I can see the actual finished product dry and straightened as I started drying it I started noticing spot/splotches throughout my hair, the color was not one color it was different parts different a blondes where my hair didn't lift correctly and the toner didn't help I looked like I had highlights and instead of it looking blended it look like uneven lines throughout my hair. Next day I went back and asked for a manager to get a refund on my hair just the color not the cut and a lady came back and said they weren't here what did I need. She was very rude didn't want to hear what I had to say...I showed her the spots in my hair I showed her everything that was wrong with my hair and had no care in the world.She refused to give me a refund and told me they don't do refunds that they can only fix it. I told her I used my day off to come in to get it done I can't come back again. When I do have time I'm gonna go to my original hair stylist, but I'm not trying to pay double. She continued to be rude cut me off and tell me no refunds. I asked for her name and she refused to give it to me, she said she didn't have to give me her name. At the end I never got to talk to a manager I asked for his name and number and she gave me a business card with the salons number and stylist name on it. The fact that they would let a client walk out with their hair looking like that is horrible for their business and the client. Two people saw my hair before I checked out and didn't say anything not even that there was something wrong with it and just let me leave . Horrible customer service and they have no organization and no etiquette in this type of business. I will NEVER go there even if it was the last place on earth. Businesses like that are so quick to take your money but won't own up to the mistakes and give you your money back when a client is dissatisfied with their hair. People seriously think or do your research before going to this place bc they will mess up your hair and not care since they have your money not even an apology. read more

A bit long but worth reading.... I'm so very disappointed in this salon. I been going here since they opened their Huffmeister salon and it had been great...I had never had a problem with anyone there and Long was always so nice but this past December i had an eye opener. Usually, I get my hair done by Rodrigo but it just happened that on December for my Christmas party which was on a Thursday he wasn't there. So, I had to get someone else I had no clue who so I asked the receptionist to just set me up..well I shouldn't have done that. The person I got was a Hispanic lady who looks Asian..I have to describe her because to this day I don't know her name. We'll I walked in and sat for a bit (I guess till she was ready for me), she then took me to get my hair washed..while at the washing area she got my cover on; which she put on super tight and kept pulling..from their I knew it wasn't going to be good. She then started to wash my hair. I had water running down my head and into my ear, down my face (which had my mascara running), down my shirt all the way down to my belly, and at times the water was either super hot or super cold. Once she was done shampooing we went to the chair and after asking me what I wanted ( which I showed her a picture of and it looked nothing like it) she continued to dry my hair. That was painful because she was rough (real rough), my head would go up, down , side to side ...my head was just all over. Every time she would pass her fingers through my hair and would go down to my neck she would dig her nails into my skin (she had the pointy Riahanna nails) so you can only imagine how painful that was. She also wouldn't be careful with how hot the blow dryer got and kept burning me. Once she was done drying my hair she got to the style and when she was done it looked nothing like what I wanted. My hair is in layers and because she did curls my last layer was above my eye..I looked like I had gotten a bad perm. I told her to fix it and she began to say, Oh, it looks nice we just need to loosen the curls up" ...uhhh duh!! She kinda fixed it but it still wasn't at all what I had asked for but I didn't really have time to argue so I paid and I left. ( I have seen other people complain when I have been there and they yell and argue but I'm not someone who likes to embarrass anyone so I preferred to call and talk to Long and explain) Well that didn't go to well either... I asked the receptionist to please ask him to call me and when he did I explained everything that had happened. He wanted me to turn around and go back so he could fix the problem but I explained to him I couldn't because I had a Christmas party to go to. So, he then told me to txt him the problem and some pictures of my hair..which I did. Txt: This is what my hair looks like now but it didn't originally look like this. My smallest layer was curled all the way above my cheeks and my bangs were curled completely. My hair now is flat and has no volume. She washed my hair and had water running down my blouse, on my eye and in my ear. When she dried my hair... She was really rough and was scratching my back with the tip of hair nails. I'm sorry Long I'm not one to complain and have never had to at your salon because everyone who has cut, color or style my hair have been great. But this was indeed a bad experience. On an other occasion I would have been glad to turn around to have my hair fixed, but I am on time constraints with the my company Christmas party. So sad to say... I never heard back from him again. I expected a lot more then this...I spend good money at this salon and a courtesy call or a "come another day so we can do something for you" would have been nice. I won't be going back to this place ever again. This was the worst hair experience of my life. 1. My appt was at 12pm. I didn't even get seated until 2pm. 2. I showed the stylist the picture of how I wanted my hair. She explained that she likely could not get my hair as light as the picture, which I was OK with. After dying my hair she had another stylist curl my hair. The second stylist gave me tight curls that made me look like orphan Annie. When I got home I staightened my hair and was finally able to see the terrible job that was done to my hair. 3. I texted Long and sent him pictures. He agreed that the dye job wasn't good and asked me to come in. I came back the following weekend. I was greeted by another stylist. The conversation went like this... Me: I need to get my hair fixed. It was just done here last week. Stylist: What's wrong with it? Me: This is the style I wanted. *shows original picture* Stylist: So what do you want? Tone it down? Me: Is that what you would do to make my hair like the picture? Stylist: So you want me to tone it down? So at this point I realize these people have no idea what they're doing. I mean, they are supposed to be the professionals - yet they are asking me what to do to fix my hair. I finally just say "Yes, tone it down." She does whatever she does and I leave. I would not recommend this hair salon. I have been going here for 10 years and just recently my highlights have been spotted when leaving. I had the owner Long fix my highlights on 10/15/16, it was so horrible, went back on 10/22/16 to have it fixed and they were so surprised at how horrible Long had done. They put all new highlights on 10/22/2016 and then toned all my hair. It now looks the same spotted just lighter. When I left their studio on 10/22/2016 after the "fix" they told me it would cost $20 for them to blow dry it so they sent me home with wet hair! This place has gone down in customer service and quality which saddens me. Save your money and go somewhere that can be trusted. read more

Could not be happier. My hair has been dark brown/black for years. I have been getting it colored in a salon and sometimes did my own root touch up. Every other salon I have visited has bred afraid to lift the color more then a few levels. I had my hair cut by Kim and loved it so decided to go back to Kim to lighten. She did an some job literally took 4 hours but after I had a decent brownish blonde shade. I decided after a week to go back and lighten some more. It is even better. My hair looks great especially for having color correction done. I have to wait 8 weeks to lighten some more. But it's so amazing. I feel like a new person. First time at this location and I'm in love! Both locations are super nice and everyone is always friendly. Hanna rocks my hair color every time! I've never been disappointed. I love this salon. I've been going here for 4 years. Veronica colors my hair and Long cuts it. I have thick crazy curly hard to manage hair and they treat me and it just right. They will not do things that will not look good on you or that will damage your hair. I get a red reverse ombré and it's a long process but they always treat me with patience and kindness. I read some reviews about having to wait, but I think it's special that they don't turn anyone away and treat all their clients the same. Sometimes a girl needs to get into a salon last minute and it's nice to have a place that can accommodate you. Also the eyebrow threading lady is amazing! read more

Very unorganized and impersonal. I booked an appointment for a haircut and blowout, was careful to be on time on a Saturday because I was certain they would be busy. First time at this salon, got there, I went to the desk, a person walked up - never looked at the schedule / computer - and I gave my name, appt time and name of stylist. She points and says "still there" to a specific chair. Okay. So I sit. 10 min later they clean a chair and order me to "still here". I sit. Person comes over to me - maybe my stylist? I still don't know- carrying color bowl she just used on someone else and says "you need highlights?" Um, no. I am here for a haircut. She walks off and doesn't say anything else to me. I went to salon for the first time on January 22nd and absolutely loved it!! I had gone to different salon the week before and had a lady make an absolute hot mess of my hair. I wore wide headbands with a bun for days after she cut it. My hair is naturally straight and was all one length. If you mess up my hair you probably should look for a different line of work. Davis cut my hair at Modern Salon. He is awesome!! He fixed the mess as much as he could and it looks a million percent better now. read more

I've been going to their Rossum location for years now and I'm never disappointed. They didn't have any availability one Saturday but recommended I try the Huffmeister location. I called and the owner answered, said there would be a 30 minute wait, but to come on in and they will fit me in as soon as possible. I ended up waiting an hour and finally had to get the owner to express my frustration. He put me in a chair and got someone working on me pretty quickly after that. The quality of the cut and color, as well as the price, is so good that it's almost worth the fact that they are so disorganized and you'll end up waiting forever between color, wash, and cut. read more

I agree with some of the comments about the lack of proper customer service at this salon. I too have been a customer of Modern Salon for about 2 years now and it has gone way down hill. I've had to wait at least 30 minutes for my scheduled appointment time to begin the last two times and didn't so much as receive an apology. The blond front desk receptionist is also uninviting, lacks customer service skills in person and on the phone. Okay I came here a few weeks ago for a blow dry and they told me to come in at 215 with an appointment... I ended up waiting 35-40 mins anyways They kept looking at me as to figure out who the next available stylist would be to take me.. The stylist that did my hair had the lightest hand...my hair frizzed up within 2 hours When you've been getting your hair done as long as I have (and I've tried SO many places in houston, unfortunately the lady I loved isn't doing it anymore so I have to continue to keep trying places) you get a grip right off the bat when a stylist is good /experienced. I don't remember her name, but she was SO polite and was also the one answering the phones...the only reason I'm giving them 2 stars is bc of her pleasant attitude... With that being said - when you come in for your hair you want your hair done right...$25 for a blowout and a blowout is styling wet hair with the blow dry not drying the hair and primarily straightening with the iron. I have never been so disappointed in a salon before!! I made an apt with Long, the manager. I showed him a picture of a haircut I wanted. He had a girl wash my hair (normally my hair doesn't get washed until after highlight) and he cut my hair. The whole time all he did was brag on how many salons he had, etc. When he finished another girl came and did my highlights with 2 other girls watching. Then another girl washed my hair and a different girl attempted to blow dry it. I could feel she was inexperienced so I asked for someone else. Another girl came to attempt to finish blow drying. Ok...so have you read he many girls I have been through yet?? When I saw my hair in the mirror I wanted to cry. I asked for Long but was told me had left already. After 3 hours I paid and was asked how I liked my hair. I told them I hated both the color and the cut! They said they could try to fix it!! No way!! I had to call another salon to have it fixed. I have been a customer at this salon since they pretty much opened the doors. at least 9 years. In recent years i moved north of kingwood and still continue to use this salon. Yesterday I went in to add more blonde to my already blonde hair - i wanted more highlights on my natural brown. when i got home, i noticed all of the brown still in the back- and i call Long, the owner. The Manager Ana called me back and said that i could come back in for an additional charge and they would see what they could do! Why should I have to pay more money when i already spent 130.00 on highlights to begin with. Why not make me a happy customer and give me a few more - for no additional charge. These folks, including Long and Hannah, have been doing my hair for about 7 years. They are professional, fun, funny, inviting and AMAZING people and stylist/colorist. Long's wife is so sweet and even brings her puppy dogs sometimes. The prices are unbelievably affordable and the quality is legit. I moved to Austin 1 1/2 years ago and still come back to Houston to have my hair done. Yes, you might have to wait a little while since they are always busy but it's worth the wait. I have been going to Modern Salon for YEARS. I went to their NHR location before this location even opened. They are slowly going downhill. I got my hair done last week - cut and all over color. I had to come back for a redo because I could clearly still see all of my highlights that I intended to cover up previously, and the color was not as dark as I wanted it to be. So I come back for a redo and I have to sit and wait for 30 mins when I was told on the phone when I called that I didn't need to make an appointment (or I would have to prevent waiting). They have the receptionist, who I'm positive is not a licensed cosmetologist, REDO my hair. She slaps color on the middle of my hair about 3 inches away from my roots and asks me sit for 20 mins. I made a comment to another stylist about how the color she put on is darker than the color I got the week before so my roots aren't going to match... they took me back to the sink and redid the color all over again and had me sit for another 20 mins. Finally, the color is done but I'm told that if I want a blow dry it's going to be extra. First of all I already paid over $100 before and you messed up my hair. Second, it's 38 degrees outside. So I left the salon with soaking wet hair and used the heater in my car to dry my hair. I won't ever come back to Modern Salon again, for the simple fact that I don't feel as though they truly take care of their clients. When you come in to have your hair redone they shouldn't stick you with someone who isn't even licensed, to fix your hair. Then, they shouldn't send you outside in 38 degree weather with soaking wet hair. If they are fixing your hair after they messed up then they should provide a complimentary blow dry, if not for ANY other reason than to check and make sure the NEW color looks okay... I've had other bad experiences here but what keeps me coming back is Veronica. This time was the icing on the cake. read more

This salon needs to have some serious employee training. My appointment was scheduled at 11:am I arrive exactly at 11:00 only to be told she didn't get in till 12:00. That was after waiting for 15 minutes and no one attending to me. I'm sitting there and no one had the courtesy to tell me that the appointment was mis scheduled ??? Unbelievable !!! Then I tell them to call me when she arrives because I live close by. I called at 12:30 they say she's there I wait an additional 30 minutes before I ever get seen. Fantastic salon with prices that you can't beat anywhere. The only downside is if you're appointment is at 11, don't expect to be seen until 11:30. The wait is worth it, however, with the money you save on highlights, coloring, etc. read more

I've always gone from very long (butt length), to very short (pixie length), and then grown it back out again. This time I had to find a new salon because my stylist and salon owner moved away. I tried a walk in at modern salon and got Kim. It worked out very well. The boy at the front desk was a little less than personable, but Kim was fabulous, and gave me the first pixie cut I haven't had to fix afterwards in eight years. I highly recommend the salon, and Kim. They were quite busy, which is a good sign, but means you'll have to wait a bit. Such is the price of a business being good AND busy. It's a GOOD thing. Only thing that would make it perfect is if everyone had a bit more personality. Talent is next to useless if you can't back it up with some kind of friendliness. I've only been once.
