I came to Moderno for a facial and hair coloring on 11-11-11, getting ready for a wedding. The facial with kelly was great. The coloring with Tiffany was hurried and many mistakes which i didn't realized until I looked into the mirror prior to the evening event. Tiffany mixed 2 bowls of coloring for my hair (intended color- caramel) because i have long hair. Near the end of it, we ran out of color so she ran and made another bowl for the last 8 foil. She blew dry my hair and sent me on my way. I realized that evening that not only was the color not caramel, the highlights were blonde (on dark brown hair and the 8 foil at the end was not blonde like the other ones, it was the caramel color i wanted. So now i have 3 shades of color on my hair, in patterns I didn't ask for. I just wanted to let you know what an awful experience it all was and i have to live with it for another 4 weeks until i can safely color my hair again to one color. read more

I never did my hair over there but I go there once a month for facial. Kelly does a really good job. The rooms are nice and the price is cheaper than Newbury Street. I absolutly love it! Don't forget bringing cash for tips since they don't take credit cards for tips. They accept spa finder gift certicificates, too. read more

I LOVE Moderno Salon. Their new location (down the street from the old one) is great. I'm a client of Feda, who is a stylist/owner. She's excellent at both styling and coloring -- sometimes that is hard to find. The salon is intimate but not cramped, and even though I am Feda's client, I feel like I know the whole staff. I haven't had as many experiences with the spa as I'd like, but I have had waxing and facials by Kelly and Mesa. Both are wonderful. Overall, no matter what mood I'm in, I leave Moderno feeling (and looking) like a million bucks. read more

I first tried out Moderno because it looked really nice inside (I went when it was brand new). It turned out that it was not only a gorgeous place but they do an excellent job too. I go to maria, she is awesome, always remembers me, and we have great conversations. She is not only a great hairdresser but is also very knowledgeable about hair and has given me some awesome tips. I've also gotten my eyebrows waxed and they did a fantastic job. They have a beautiful upstairs spa area-- everything top of the line. If you go I recommend buying the Moroccan Oil they sell there, they used it in my hair once and after that I was hooked. Definitely one of the best hair products out there. read more

I had been searching for a new salon for my daughters and I when a friend recommended Moderno. I was able to book appointments quickly and we all had our hair cut by Maria. She was terrific. She is so friendly and kind, engaged both of my pre-teen daughters and their hair came out amazing! They loved that she gave them tips for keeping their hair conditioned during the summer with all the swimming and sun. When it came time for me, she did exactly what I wanted. I found the reviews helpful on Yelp but was convinced to go when I saw someone else's haircut-who is the pickiest person on Earth-and she liked it! I was happy to hear that they could fit me in on short notice and when I arrived, it was very welcoming. Small but very modern and super clean! I saw Tiffany-who I can not say enough about. I made the mistake of my life by booking services for my wedding (hair for myself and 4 of my wedding party). Though I brought a picture before the appointment and the day of the appointment/wedding, my hair ended up looking like a mop on the day when I supposed to feel beautiful. I didn't ask for anything complicated - big waves, 1920s style. Too much styling product was used and my hair fell flat, frizzy and gross by the time I left the salon. By then, it was too late for me to implement any kind of "plan B" so ruined mood and ruined pictures followed. The other people in my party hated their hair too. I hate to give bad reviews but this has been on my mind for quite some time. Back in January I decided to do the big chop and get a lob. Well, what I got was...a mess. I went to Feda as usual and showed her a picture. I was hesitant at first because she didn't seem to know what a lob was. Long story short...I got some sort of funky uneven cut that I've been fixing at another salon and finally have a lob 6 months later and hundreds of dollars later. I now know why I was always so fearful about cutting my hair short and I'll probably never do it again! read more

i've been going to moderno for a while for my hair and they are great! moderno is pricier than other salons in the area, but you absolutely get what you pay for. i've been to feda, and a few other stylists who no longer work there, but tiffany is my favorite for cuts and colors. she's always willing to explain what will look good and what won't work with my hair. read more

Sokim has been doing my hair for about 8 years off and on. I love him. This salon is a nice atmosphere but i got alot of dirty looks for having a very well behaved five year old with me. She sat in the waiting area and silently colored with crayons the whole time. both me and her got dirty looks the whole time. im sorry that some people have responsabilities in life. It just aggrevated me. Also the woman at the desk was very rude towards me. There seemed to be three stylists just sitting around gossiping and throwing around rude comments and dirty looks. Sokim already had someone else waiting for him when i was done. I feel like he should move to another salon so his customers are not treated rudely. read more

No one that I know of wants to go around with a bad "do" right??? I made my appointment with Emily. I was nervous because I had a lot of damage due to getting a perm from a previous stylist. Tiffany is awesome! I have very thin hair that falls flat on top and a long face. And NO sense of style. I always go to salons asking they stylists to be creative and do whatever they want - because I have no idea what to do. Ha! Tiffany is the only one who has been brave enough to take risks and get creative. And amazingly, I will give her a vague description such as "something funky and choppy that frames my face" and she will pull it off. Very cool. I always leave feeling like she gave me exactly what I was looking for...even tho I wasn't sure what I wanted, if that makes sense. Anyway, Tiff can do styles that are conservative and simple, but I really recommend her for people looking for a more dramatic effect because she can pull it off no problem. I went to Maria after reading great things about her curly hair cutting skills and I wasn't disappointed! She listened patiently and thoughtfully to every single word I had to say about my hair (which was a lot!); took care to address all of the things I had mentioned; and cut my hair skillfully and deliberately, checking with me at intervals along the way to make sure I was happy with what she was doing. Today I walked in there and it took 10 minutes to be greeted. After that the customer service was wonderful. I had my eyebrows waxed and enjoyed my visit so much that I'm going to get my haircut done there soon. The prices are reasonable. It cost me $14 which was only a couple dollars more than what i was paying. This place is very nice and the people there are so nice too. Im very difficult to please when it comes to my hair and I think that Feda did a wonderful job. I'm pretty socially awkward and get anxiety about sitting in a strangers chair for an hour. When I first went to Moderno, my hair was a disaster. I tried to color it darker myself and I ended up with brown/grayish hair. I went to Tiffany and she was great - my hair looked amazing when I left. I have since moved to NYC where there is a salon on every corner. I have paid over $400 a few times to get my hair done here, and never has it been worth it. I have been going to Moderno Salon for years now. For my regular haircuts, which I get about once every three months, I go to Matt. He is great. He gives an awesome blowout and always does exactly what I want. For special occasions, I go to Tiffany. She has given me five amazing updos. The amount of compliments I get when she does my hair is overwhelming. If you are going to a wedding/prom/event, I 100% recommend her. When I get my makeup done, it is done by Alexa who does a fantastic job. She really knows what she is doing. Lastly, for waxing and spray tans I go to Kelly. I did not have a problem with my hair cut. I did have a problem with the fact that the person cutting my hair was too busy talking to other hair dressers to notice that she stabbed me in the head with the sissors, did not notice and then did not take off any money for stabbing me. I used to love this place. I was a client of Maura's, who had left. When I called to make my appointment, the receptionist let me know that Maura had left and she booked me with Diane. I specifically asked if they still had my hair color info in the computer because that's the only color I prefer. I was told yes, no problem. I will start off by saying Diane was really nice during the appointment. When I arrived I told her I just wanted my color done, a trim of 2 inches and to blow my hair out straight (I have curly hair). She said she'd do the color to make it shiny and rich and I said "sounds good", thinking she'd simply use the color I always use. I knew the minute she rinsed my head that my color was not the light brown/auburn that I always have, but now it's a deep, dark brown and nothing close to what I like. I let it go thinking it was somehow my fault. She dried my hair VERY frizzy and flat ironed it a bit so she could cut it. Then instead of blowing it out smooth and finishing with a flat iron, she simply flat ironed it again after the cut. I have curly hair, but it has never been an issue to straighten. I told her that it wasn't getting smooth with just the flat iron and she told me my ends were too frayed (after a cut?) to do that. It made no sense to me. I get my hair cut every 8-12 weeks like clockwork and have never been told by anybody that I have damaged ends, let alone that they couldn't straighten it. She did both. After the 2nd flat ironing, I again told her it wasn't smooth and I didn't like the job but I felt badly because she spent a long time working on me. She literally mumbled "ok, yeah" and walked away and went into the back room (right behind us) to complain/sulk to coworkers while I was left to remove my own smock, brush off the cut hair and head to the front to check out. When the receptionist rang me up, I told her I was really unhappy with the service. I said Diane was nice and I liked the cut but it wasn't the color and certainly wasn't the blow out I wanted. I showed her how frizzy and coarse my hair was left despite the flat iron. She simply gave me bill, apologized and said "sorry I will let them know". Let whom know, I am not sure about. What I do know is I complained twice in 5 minutes and nobody did anything to help me. A follow up email to the manager/owner was never returned. I spent $125 (plus a $25 tip) on a cut, color that I don't like (SOOO dark compared to my normal color) and a frizzy flat ironing. I am in the service industry and am pretty appalled by the situation. I would have gladly gone back for a corrective color but I am so uncomfortable that I was complained about in the back room that I don't even know if I would ever go. It's really a shame. read more

i had originally started going to moderno because my hairdresser transfered there. Well she moved out of the state about 5 years ago so i stayed with moderno but only had the owner Fayda do my hair. She always did a great job and i was always happy. Well after about 3 yrs of going to Fayda she gor TOO cumfy with me, talking crap about her clients, making me wait forever, giving me free hair conditions just to keep me waiting more in hopes i wouldn't get mad for continuing to wait. She always seem to over book herself. Best part she got a BF and she'd make you wait longer if he came in to visit. VERY Unprofessional. Then she turned my hair orange and blames it on the salons lighting. Well the last straw was when i was waiting as usual for her in the waiting room and she didn't know i was there and i heard her talking crap about me. I was sooooooooo angry i let her cut my hair one more time and i have never returned. Sux b/c i loved going to Kelly for facials but i refuse to step foot in that salon. The owner is a rude *itch. No one should ever be treated like that when you are the customer! So to all Fayda's clients she ALWAYS talks about you to her other clients!!!!!! read more

I really wanted to like this place. It is very nice inside (not enough chairs though as some had to stand while waiting). I went to Fayda (the owner) for a haircut. Her intentions were not successfully communicated to me, which could have been my fault for not understanding her correctly. Much shorter than I expected. What is not my fault is that the sides were noticeably uneven once I got home to get a closer look at it. It could have been due to her being in a rush, due to running behind. I would like to give her the benefit of the doubt as she is very nice. My co-workers noticed the unevenness immediately. The next day I had to pay another salon $40 to make my hair even shorter so it's even all around. Very disappointed. Also had to wait 30 minutes. read more

I am so sad to have to write this because I really loved my hair stylist Maria to begin with, she gives a great cut! After the first 2 visits it all went down hill. My first issue being it would take 3 plus hours for a cut and color, my hair is very short. I would be out of my mind anxious before I left, as most times I had plans or told my husband to pick me up and I was never ready. Second the prices changed all the time, or I would go in for my root's to be done and I would get a full foil and be charged $85-100. for it. When I only need my roots done, that is all I need done!! When I made a comment or frowned at how much I was being charged I got nasty looks and was made to feel cheap. I dont go to Newbury St for a reason, being treated like trash is not a good feeling. Lastly, I had a ton of weddings and parties last month. I had had a spray on tan there before and said, hey I need some color for pictures!! I can not express how horrible I looked for the next 3, yes 3 weeks. Fada the owner did my tan and it was so uneven and layered it was just terrible. I had it done before my wedding and it went away in 3 days. This stayed on, uneven for 3 weeks. Everyone made fun of me at the wedding, people from CA asked how I was so tan. I scrubbed my skin to the point of almost bleeding and could not get it off, Surfise it to say, every function I had in the next few weeks I was embarrassed, I could not get it off my skin. Yes it is $30 you will make in profits but if you dont know how to do it you should not do it just for the money. Not to mention I was almost naked in front of this woman!! Really bad experiences all in all. Now I have to find a hairdresser on the North Shore, UUGGGGHHH Plus you should takes tips with the credit card machine, you put people out and make them feel bad when they dont have cash.
