Modica's is like any other crappy but conveniently located cafe/deli in a business area. You know the type, perhaps there is one near your own office/workplace. It's a busy Tuesday afternoon and you're starving but don't have time to go find yourself a good lunch and Modica's is RIGHT THERE. So you go. And I could see that it'd be an adequate option for just that occasion. Beyond that, there is no reason to eat here. At all. Unless you're really into moody unpleasant waitstaff/cashier (the girl with dark hair) who behave as if they're doing you a favor by ringing up your order. Or if you're a connoisseur of half-heartedly prepared frozen food items, this is the place for you. Nothing's fresh or of any decent quality. I've gotten great food from here, but I never stray too far from the Fresh Mozzarella Veggie sandwich. A small (8 inches, I think) sandwich is more than enough, and usually (unless I'm ravenous) I don't have to pair it with chips or anything else to be full. Suicide cake is always delicious, but can be overly rich, so look to share. The one major downside is that they do use styrofoam for their to-go packaging, so if you are environmentally-conscious, you can always bring your own plastic containers. Gave this place two chances but it didn't do anything for me. Extremely Americanized Italian food. Inauthentic. The garlic bread was stale and didn't taste like garlic. While you will be hard-pressed to find authentic Italian food in Long Beach, there are better options. Angelo's Italian Deli (190 La Verne Ave) makes a tasty, fresh eggplant Parmesan sub and has a great small selection of imported Italian groceries. Michael's Pizzeria (5616 E 2nd St) is fantastic! The Deli News (5555 E Stearns St) is a much better alternative, too. read more

For the most part, the food is okay. It's close to home and when I don't feel like cooking I grab something from them. Last night I got some of their chicken soup and well it sucked!! IT was all broth and I only got TWO pieces of chicken. This is the place to get a great meal and wonderful service. While I was in town for a convention, I referred a few people to this place and went here a bunch of times. The bread was so fresh and the portions were big (for me). They are reasonibly priced, too. I was fully satisfied with their sandwiches, meals and desserts. I absolutely love this little deli!!! The sandwiches are very good, but a little pricey. The deli is small, so beware if you are going there to eat during lunch hour, you might not find a table. All the guys I work with love this place, and we stop in pretty often even though we work up in the Wrigley area of LB. They definately make great subs, and provide great customer service. First off, there are no Italians behind the counter, and probably none in the kitchen. It's pretty much Mexican, which isn't a bad thing, except that they don't understand the Italian food sensibility. I had a meatball sandwich today that wasn't bad; just bland. The meatballs needed more bread crumbs, garlic and flat leaf parsley worked into them. And the sauce needed some perking up too. Maybe a dab of anchovy paste, some red wine and a bit of crushed oregano added toward the end. Once again, I live across the street so the convenience factor is huge. But I notice that this place is always jam packed during lunch. Not to mention that it seems the entire LBC police force is their number one clientele. I've been here quite a bit and I have to say, the sandwiches are okay. They totally skimp on the deli meat and that's a problem when I am paying nearly 7 dollars for a 8 inch sandwich. It may seem like a lot of sandwich but its disappointingly mostly bread (but at least good bread :/ ) Add a side salad and drink it can easily be over $10. If I'm paying that much I expect more. A downtown Long Beach staple. I work across the street and Modica's Pastrami beckons me far too often. I'd say the best pastrami in town hands down. Tried the chicken parm sandwich once but was disappointed. Good bread and sauce but the chicken was baked. I like crispy chicken parm. Stick to the pastrami and you cant go wrong. read more

I have been to Modica's a few times on recent trips to Long Beach. They are on the ground floor of the historic Cooper Arms building. Parking was relatively easy at the times I visited. All off street parking so I can see where it might be a challenge to find parking right away. But I had no problems with that. The food has always been excellent. I had the Sloppy Joe (not sure what they called it on their menu) and another time the cheese tortellini with marinara sauce, bread, salad. Very, very tasty. Apparently they are known for their marinara sauce... I love their shirt that they sell: "Legalize marinara". Quite humorous! Their deserts are also really, really good. Indoor and outdoor seating available. I gave them four stars because the food is excellent but the customer service is variable. Just not always focusing on who happens to be at the counter or talking with other staffers on business issues before dealing with the customer. OK, not very filling. Sandwiches are mostly made up of bread and lettuce, not much else. I ordered the full size and I wasn't even full. Not to mention, the staff doesn't look happy that you're there. Being a professional salesperson, I can frequent another restaurant who is happy to receive my money. This place is so good. They have great specials, great food and great prices. I would recommend the spaghetti with meat sauce special. It comes with salad garlic bread and a drink for like $9. (Can't beat that) I would recommend you order anything that comes with or on a French roll. I don't know if they buy them or make them there but the bread is amazing. Visited from up north .. Wanted a sub. Used good ole yelp. This place has very good subs. Crisp roll on the outside.. Soft roll on the inside. A large is basically 2 small subs. Large was enough for lunch and dinner. Reasonably priced. Has soda & beer. No gimmicks. The actual restaurant is small.. And was very warm. Sat outside. First of all...I am totally disappointed that I didn't get my act together fast enough to be the first to review this place. I have been going here since they first opened. My absolute favorite thing is the turkey sandwich. I know, sorta boring, but I can't help it. It is my favorite favorite sandwich. They have great pasta and other fantastic sandwiches, but I always go back to the Turkey. Expect to meet lines especially around lunch. And the parking can be a struggle around the busy hours -- but in my mind, there is no better turkey sandwich in town. read more

Nice location as well and you get to sit outside. I always get the regular sandwich which is 8" - the large is double at 16". Try the pastrami - it's pretty good.
