    Pound of Brick

Meaning 'Holy Cow' in French (wasn't a Cubs fan growing up, but remember Harry Caray's famous call), Oh La Vache is a gourmet cheese shop in 4th Street Retro Row neighborhood of Long Beach. It was my first time, and didn't know what to expect. Ended up buying more than I expected, to try to reproduce my initial experience in Paris a couple of weeks before. And we got close, plus with a heck of a lot better weather. It's a small shop, with a trio of dedicated ladies efficiently working through a line of customers. I was super happy to see them as busy as they were, being a local business near my neighborhood. Plus it meant the product turns around more quickly, better freshness. My initial thought was to buy a substitute recommended cheese for French Comté, but was told they had it in stock. So bought a half pound of it ($14). Then noticed that they had Beurre de Baratte Butter (250 grams for $17) and Widmer Brick Cheese ($16 for a pound). Of course with the butter, that meant bread so bought one baguette ($5), freshly baked daily by the nearby Hey Brother Bakery (guess where I'm going sometime in the near future). The brick cheese is for Detroit style pizza later in the month. These are all products that can't be found in a supermarket. They use square as the payment processor, which makes it easy to pay and get a receipt to my phone. Always appreciate that when writing. Parking is impossible in this part of town...my wife found a street parking spot to idle a couple of streets down while I quickly bought the stuff. When done, she picked me up and we were home soon after. We ate the baguette with butter and cheese immediately....so, so, so good.

Oh La Vache is a truly special gem. The shop itself is fantastic, they offer a great assortment of cheeses, including seasonal cheeses. They have an excellent soft cheese assortment! They also have charcuterie accompaniments and tinned fish to complement the cheese selection. The shop itself is decorated perfectly. I love the sign inside that says "the holy trinity" for cow, goat and sheep's cheese. But it's the people who really make this place stand out. The service is incredible here, and the way they embrace their community is the true beauty of Oh La Vache. On Fourth Fridays, they do these raclette snacks - freshly and individually prepared, ooey gooey raclette on fresh sourdough. You can add ham for a dollar more. Let me tell you, this was a heavenly experience. I love raclettes; when I was in Switzerland, I would have a raclette every week. And the one here at Oh La Vache was so good, such high quality cheese, that it took me right back to Switzerland. I absolutely loved it. It's simple, but made with a lot of love. And it's so commendable that they specially prepare it for each customer during our fourth Fridays to promote community I can tell you, they have made me a customer for life. The care and love they have for our community is above and beyond. The food is great, the people are great, support this local business!

Once upon a time, another delightful Yelp-worthy find! This is such a lovely store! Reminds me of many European shops. The bread in the window got me! The cheese selection is generous, the meats great for charcuterie, and the staff knowledgeable and pleasant. Worth a visit. The end.

A shop of cheese??? Yes please! I went 2 weeks in a row and will keep going. The staff is kind and helpful and the food is tasty!

My partner loves cheese and I like good goat cheese for dietary reasons. This is near 4th and Cherry where parking is a bit tight but we got lucky find a spot in the corner public lot. NOTE: it was Sunday and the parking attendant was dutifully checking plates vs payment so use that pay kiosk if you park there. The place is a bit small but if felt like they a selection of cheese, meats, wine and treats :) that made the place feel bigger. The people behind the counter had enough knowledge to give you confidence that you've made good choices! A good place to go if you need a formal charcuterie tray or a picnic lunch!

I'm a cheese lover and forever I've been tempted to come in just that the hours aren't very convenient for my schedule. I love the post with their daily sandwiches, I told one of my gf about it and she wanted to treat me for a birthday lunch, so turns out there's no space to eat there. So we had to cancel it cause walking around looking for a spot wasn't in our plans, too bold to be outdoors and today she kindly called and said I'm picking up sandwiches, so what do you want!? She ordered several sandwiches bcs she had all of her 4 kids. So I was excited to see they had a turkey burrata and pesto... Love love love burrata pesto. It was quite tasty, will be back. My friend didn't enjoy it as much as I did cleaned out whole sandwich, oh yeah it was big!!! and her kids didn't appreciate the gourmet deliciousness so much! :( So yeah the only sucky part is there's no seating and ohhhh you can't change anything in the sandwiches, they are pre made, I got so lucky cause I loved everything in this one! happy new year!

This place is a charcuterie haven!! With the help of experts behind the counter, we enjoyed a special sample selection of 7 different cheeses, a couple of meats, with a fresh baguette. Boy, was that a fun and delicious journey!! They had many goodies that would be fun to grab-and-go for a lovely picnic, or share with loved ones. They even had an amazing list of daily sandwiches to choose from. Can't wait to go back! Thanks for being amazing!!

This is such a gem of a place. The staff will help you figure out cheese selections and offer samples along the way. The expertise is spot on. I was there this weekend. I am a creature of habit but I trust them to help me discover new flavors!

We ordered a board for a beach date. When we picked it up we also grab a daily sandwich, croissant, ham, cheese and jam. Everything was wonderful and fresh. The service was great, the staff offered suggestions for bread vs crackers for the board. They had recently acquired the lemon black cheese which I was excited to try so they cut some up and added it to the board. Highly recommend.

Very happy with the selections, size of the tray, and pricing.

It's located in Bixby Knolls, surrounded by coffee shops, restaurants, bars and breweries, yet it's the only true wine bar right there. Honestly, Long Beach has more wine bars than most surrounding areas, and since the South Bay is packed with breweries, if you're tired of beer this is your sign to switch it up. You will not regret it. The food menu has cheese boards, salads and sandwiches, and everything I've had here has been delicious. The cheese boards are better than sex. There is seating indoors and outdoors. It's minimal, but somehow we always manage to find a table. The service is consistently great and the owner is wonderful. She will be leaving soon and she will absolutely be missed, but what she has built here will definitely be cherished. The new owners fell in love with the place, so you can expect it to be well taken care of and to remain just as charming. Parking is street only, so read the signs carefully so you don't end up with a ticket. If you go on a Sunday there are no restrictions or time limits, which makes it even better.

We ordered a couple chopped cheeses, fries, onion rings, and chicken nuggets for the little one. Everything was delicious. The crispiness of all the fries foods were spot on. They offered up some delicious homemade sauces, and their cilantro one is bomb (not spicy but a little tangy). The chopped cheese was melty and delicious, and the bread had a nice chewy texture. Service was friendly and low-key. Food took a little while but was worth the wait. Everything was so good. We will definitely be back!

I got the 10-inch chopped cheese combo. The sandwich had a few positives: good amount of beef, tender meat, cheese melted in well and the bread was genuinely great. Soft, chewy, flavorful and easily the best thing here. Everything after that started falling apart. The sandwich was rich and oily but didn't have enough seasoning, acidity or heat to balance it. There were faint hints of cumin and the salt level was fine, but overall it tasted like it was trying to coast on grease. The lettuce and tomato added nothing, and even the cilantro sauce couldn't cut through the oily aftertaste. If you do try it, add onions, pickles and jalapeños because the base sandwich badly needs backup. The fries looked good, then delivered absolutely nothing. Barely seasoned, smaller portion than expected and somehow had a weird burnt aftertaste despite looking normal. That takes effort. Service was the real disaster. The person helping me acted annoyed, like customers were an unfortunate side effect of running a restaurant. The menu board shows combo pricing for some items, like burgers, but not sandwiches, so the chopped cheese combo pricing was unclear. The drink situation was ridiculous. The board says $2.99 for a 24 oz drink and the soda machine was right there, but I was handed a 12 oz can with no heads-up that the machine wasn't available. That's not a substitute. Full size promise for a half-size reality. For $22.03 total, that made the whole combo feel even worse value-wise. Food took almost 30 minutes and it felt like my order sat around until it was convenient to bag it. I only got it when another customer who ordered after me was being helped. Add the flies hanging around the napkins and surfaces and this started feeling less like lunch and more like a health inspection waiting to happen. Parking is rough too since it's on a narrow, busy intersection, though there is paid parking across the street. Overall, the bread was great and the sandwich had potential, but potential doesn't carry bad service, bland fries, unclear pricing, a drink downgrade, a long wait and flies. If the food was amazing, maybe some of this could be overlooked. Nah, too many atrocities happening.

We stopped by on a Monday afternoon, and there was plenty of parking (shared parking strip mall parking lot). I was pleasantly surprised that one of the places that carry it, was right here in LBC. It's a smaller shop, manageable by one person. The owner/proprietor was very friendly, and gave us some suggestions on cheese (which we followed: Milton Praire Breeze $8.99) and fresh European bread, which we intend to try (with the purchased butter of course). I'm a sucker for sour dough flatbread crisps, so had to pick up a box of that ($8.50). Note that it has a small variety of cheeses, all already individually pre-wrapped (this is not a cheese shop where they have wheels of cheese, ready to be cut on-demand). Next time, will take advantage of the expert wine/cheese pairing.
