We were driving through Charlottesville on a trip from Texas and had a hankering for some barbecue. Moe's had great reviews so we decided to try it. What a treat! it lived up to the hype and surpassed our expectations. my husband loved the slaw and its crisp tanginess. Our family loved the beans. The squash casserole reminded me of my grandma's. I really enjoyed Moe's. We just got in from Florida and were looking for a place to eat in Charlottesville. We found this place and decided to give it a try since BBQ always varies in different states. You walk up to the counter to order, very causal restaurant. I order the pull pork platter, which was only $11. All platters come with a drink, cornbread, and 2 sides.....$11 is a steal. I real enjoyed the pulled pork, the BBQ sauce seemed to be a vinegar base sauce, which I prefer over a really sweet BBQ sauce. The cornbread was very good and had small pieces of jalapeño inside; the Mac and cheese was also tasty. I also ordered the "marinated slaw", I was expecting the traditional cole slaw, but it was cabbage and veggies marinated in a vinegary sauce without mayo. First, let me start by saying, do yourself a favor and get the catfish. Like no matter what you order, order the catfish as well! Yum!!!! It's the best! For real. I can't stop talking about it. It comes in like bites not a whole filet. I ordered a lot of food. I also ordered the ribs and the chopped pork. The ribs are better than the chopped pork. The chopped pork is just okay. I had the Mac and cheese and collard greens as sides. Both were good. The collard greens took some getting used to because they were spicy and tasted pickled. I grew up with collard greens cooked with vinegar but these actually have like a pickled taste. I love greens so I made it work. On recommendation I tried out Moe's today because I was craving barbecue. Omg was this good. I tried the pulled pork platter which comes with a drink, cornbread, and two sides for $11. My sides were potato salad and beans. Every bite of this meal was delicious. The pulled pork was a little bland and dry, but they provided a cup of sauce that really added the flavor it needed. That plus I dumped my beans into it which were loaded with flavor and a little spice. The beans were the best thing on the plate. Also the cornbread was lightly toasted which enhances the flavor! It had chunks of possibly jalapeño inside for some light heat. The potato salad was not overwhelming on mustard which is what usually kills it for me. Pleasantly surprised on that. This might be my new go-to BBQ place in Cville (overtaking Mission BBQ)! The pulled pork sandwich was excellent - the meat was so juicy, tender, and flavorful. The first bite was amazing. I like how the buns were slightly crispy on the edges. The cole slaw and mac and cheese were good and went well with the sandwich. I would liked it if the mac and cheese were a little cheesier (it was on the drier end). The meat really set this place apart. Reasonable prices and pleasant staff. Convenient location on Ivy Rd. I had my first experience with Moe's last night. I was pleasantly surprised with my meal. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich platter. I chose mac and cheese and squash casserole as my two sides. It was nice that a drink comes with the meal. We arrived during happy hour but didn't have any drinks. They had reasonable prices for their alcohol as well. We did have an attractions book coupon which allowed for BOGO. The staff was very friendly and the service was quick. I'm typically a Eastern NC BBQ fan, so I was surprised that this wasn't an option. While I was originally disappointment, their sauce was a good substitute. FYI -- They only have one sauce. Visiting VA from So Cal and we wanted to try some BBQ while passing through town. Found this little spot and were very happy with our decision. We had ribs, beans, pulled pork and Mac/Cheese. This place is legit, right down to the hush puppies! Great pulled pork, ribs, wings, and catfish. You can taste the hickory smoke in the meats, including the wings. The sides don't disappoint, and neither do the desserts. I'm from North Carolina, and this is some of the best barbecue I've ever eaten. I chose the collard greens (exceptionally good) and squash casserole (wonderfully cheesy and flavorful) and added a side of jambalaya for lunch tomorrow. This used to be a reliable, tasty meal. Under new ownership it took 6-8 months to get a liquor license. I happen to like a sip of bourbon along with my pig. On arrival I was informed that at 4:30 PM they were out of brisket. Ok. 1/2 Chicken platter, please. And to drink? I'll have an Old Fashioned please. "How do you make that?" Its bourbon. How many shots???? Really? Waited on my food. Another different server walked over and said he didn't know how to make my drink. I told him basically. It's the simplest bourbon drink out there. And the most classic. And perfect on a snowy Sunday afternoon. Cornbread was refrigerator cold. Chicken was sliced (half cut through) in a new weird way that left awkward little bone splinters in my mouth. Also, I don't tip for someone who doesn't know what I even ordered to input into a computer. I picked it myself when my name was called. Cleared my table myself. I had the Moe bowl which was $9 and it was good, but portion size was not comparable to any of the other food trucks in our area. Decent bbq at moes. The pulled pork is pretty standard, the brisket has great bark (but bites without bark and lacking in flavor). The sides here are on point though. The corn bread I assume is cooked in a cast iron, and then fried to crisp up the outsides. It also has peppers or something in it which are nice. The mac and cheese is really good, not sure why it looks regular but it hit the spot for sure. The jalapeno cheese grits were also really good and I couldn't stop eating them. It's quick, it's convenient (to ivy gardens), and the prices are standard for a bbq spot. Will be back for more brisket (my weakness) and lots of sides. read more

I have tried BBQ in many places throughout the US and Moe's BBQ does not stand out as one of the best. The restaurant is located a little bit away from most of the Charlottesville attractions, but it is easy to park at the restaurant. When you walk in there is definitely a southern feel in the environment but it is not entirely authentic. The first thing you will encounter is a stand with the cashier who will take your order. The thing I liked the most about this restaurant was the menu, it is easy and simple. Choose the item you want, this comes with sides and a drink. 1 price for everything, no complications. In addition I would say you can have a complete meal for around 10 dollars so it is affordable. Other than that the food itself was smoked nicely, but the BBQ sauce which is supposed to be the hero, they did not stand out, they lacked heat. Overall, if you want a no thrills place just to chill and grab a decent BBQ you can visit Moe's BBQ, just dont expect the best BBQ ever. read more

So glad I came on Wednesday as they had brisket! And it did not disappoint. For approximately $14, I got a brisket sandwich, two sides, and a drink. The sandwich was packed with brisket (literally the point that brisket was falling out as I was eating) and also had some delicious juicy pickles. I got mac and cheese and potato salad as my sides. They were both solid, but their brisket was the star of the show. It's definitely some of the better brisket I've had - very juicy and tender. I first heard of Moe's a few years ago when I was working a tailgate for a friend of my dad's before UVA football game and Moe's was the caterer (I think they were fairly new to the area at that time). It's a husband and wife team that own the business and they're both super nice! Their food at the tailgate was great and it was my first time trying sweet potato casserole which was so good I kinda wanted to take the whole pan of it home. I don't remember the exact timeline but I think a few months later I actually ate in the restaurant and enjoyed it. It's not huge but do have outdoor seating. Every staff member I've encountered over the few times I've been there has been friendly. Prices seem reasonable and their meals come with two sides. They have everyday sides then they have rotating special sides (example: the sweet potato casserole isn't always on the menu) plus there's a special each day of the week. I'm not big on bbq (I like it it's just not my go to food) but Moe's is my favorite. They also have a bar and a TV or two you can watch a game on. Last UVA football season I discovered they were a concession option but for whatever reason I never got food from there probably because I discovered this on the last game I was able to make it to and they were closed up and cleaning when I saw them. Fast forward to the FSU game I walked around hoping to find them and I found them with quite a line. They menu is limited since they're in a van but do have some of their sides. I ordered the pulled pork nachos with queso minus the jalapenos. My only regret is I wish I had gotten a fork and more napkins. Ever since then I've been craving them. Even though I don't get by there often I love this place! I totally respect Mission BBQ's theme and what they do for the military and public servants but my favorite bbq place is definitely Moe's!! read more

Delicious!!! Downtown location has won my family over! Enjoyed sitting outside and enjoying the weather and the downtown view. My daughter and I both had ribs and they were fall off the bone delicious. The bbq sauce on each table is excellent and went so well with the ribs. This is one of my favorite go to places in Charlottesville. I love the Thanksgiving sandwich on Thursday's. It's nothing less than amazing. The sides are also really good. I have a hard time trying new things because I always go here on Thursdays but I did try a Tuesday and and had the pulled pork sandwich which was a special that night. It was also nothing less than amazing. This place has a unique ability of keeping their meat so tender it almost melts in your mouth.
