Partied here on a Friday night on a local friend's recommendation. Here's the night in review: Our plane lands in Miami at 12AM. We do a mad dash to the hotel, change, and head out to celebrate the start of 2 weeks of partying South Beach! My friend, Giselle (a Miami local), recommends we do Mokai. Mokai it is! Hop a cab..and we're there! it's now almost 2AM. As we approach the club, 4 couples in a group ahead of us walk up to the doormen. From their conversation they appear to be out-of-towners, and clearly excited about Mokai. They must have heard good things! One of the guys reaches into his pocket, and asks the amount for cover? Doorman gives no response. Guy asks again. Doorman says, "Sorry, there's nothing we can do for you. Have a good night." Jaws drop. The guy says, "What?!" The doorman repeats himself. I look over at my good friend Diem and gf Jen. They look at me with expressions of WHAT THE HELL? We look at the 4 couples who were just denied entry as they walk by us dumbfounded. They were decently enough dressed, definitely all well over 21. Wow...I am worried. I reach for my phone, readying myself to call my buddy who promotes for this place because being all dressed up with no where to go isn't cool and we have no plan B (alternate venues lined up for the night). We approach the door. Phone in one hand, my wallet in the other. The doorman smiles and asks, "What are you doing? You don't need that (looking at my wallet)....Right this way sir." He's holding the door for us. Wow...I'm outside my Chicago, but still I give off the universally understood "I'm someone" vibe! (Who am I kidding! Fine ladies and gents of Yelp... I ONLY got in because I was with two gorgeous women...but please allow me my illusions of grandeur...lol) Okay, so we're in and I'm looking around. The space is not large at all, but the layout is decent. The crowd is fairly attractive, fit, fashionable, and very diverse. We make a celebratory stop at the bar for some shots...get the night started right! SALUD! The second and third rounds are bought by guys trying to mack on my friend Diem. Yes, she is beautiful, but I let them know she's not in the market. (She's really not...it's the 1-yr anniversary to the day of her fiance's passing in Iraq..)...the guys aren't listening. They buy 2 more rounds of shots. We do the one, decline the other. I'm off to the restroom, only to return to see a tourist starting with his "Have you ever seen a bimmer?...I own..."...(You've gotta be kidding) The gf and Diem simultaneously reach into their purses and pull out car keys...BMW prominently shown on the key chains. Tourist guys is silent...stumped...and stupefied. Didn't see that one coming did you? We flee to VIP. The VIP section's for bottle service only and takes up most of the club. It also appears to be the only place seating is available. There is no place to dance or sit unless you're in VIP. I see an under-attended VIP table. I walk up to the guy introduce myself and my crew, throw in a quick cash contribution...whamo...we're sharing the table and the ladies now have a place to sit, drink, and be merry...tourist free. The scene is cool. Music good, lighting is better than most. place feels a lot more intimate than I gathered from the description given by my friends. For a first night in SoBe...was a good venue to celebrate our arrival. We leave happy, although not at all sober. GOOD TIMES. PROS: Lighting effect by bar area is interesting. Friendly attentive bartenders and waiters. Positive vibe and good-looking, energetic crowd with no unnecessary alpha male posturing. Drinks are reasonably priced for SoBe. CONS: Not very large. Limited Seating. No place to dance. VIP area gets crowded and seats should be wiped clean of spilled drinks more often. (Our seats were fine, but the table next to our had plenty of spilled drinks and ice that remained for 20 minutes until I pointed it out to one of the bouncers). Also the bouncers at the door. I am all for doormen being selective, but I can't help but put myself in the shoes of that group instantly denied entry without explanation that night. This could have been done a little kinder. Perhaps there is something Mokai can learn from Chicago's Crobar...and that's is the art of the euphemism: "Sorry, the club's at capacity" Much kinder and gentler than,"Sorry, there's nothing we can do for you. Easy getting in considering I'm a girl, we had a promoter (@doreosystem)give us drinks back to back so we didn't have to worry about paying, which was great because I kinda almost have to worry about that because most promoters suck lol. Mokai I was visiting from England last month and heard Mokai was a good club to party at on Monday night's. I made a table reservation via their website clearly stating it was for 5 guys and was contacted by Matt Rivers - VIP DIRECTOR, who took the booking and confirmed of all details i.e. table minimum, arrival time etc. Get to the door, meet Matt - says hello, takes my ID and says he'll be right back. In this time the short door man, Max i think his name was - who walks around like he owns the place (haha awwww bless) has told him to not let us in. You've probably met this type of doorman before - short syndrome, won't make any eye contact whatsoever, job makes him think he's someone important. Ha. Anyway, Matt tells us the bad news but obviously in a way that's not discriminatory i.e. sorry but there are too many guys when really it was doorman not liking the look of my crowd. I ask him why he even took the reservation and he starts to act busy and avoids the question. I (regretfully) wasted 30 minutes outside hoping they'd understand we are tourists who just wanted to spend some money in their club....and Matt suddenly offers us a table for $2k (double the original minimum). None of us have had a sex change in the last half hour so why is the guy issue not important anymore? Anyway I laugh off his $2k and notice another guy there who is walking about - maybe an owner? His name was Justin I think. He was actually very fair and showed me the screen that said all tables had now gone and explained sometimes locals get priority over tourists. I can understand that - they will give more repeat business than I can for sure. He even says sorry and says that if we spend $500 at the bar he can let us in as normal entry. But by this point my friend's didn't feel Mokai deserved our money and certainly didn't want to fund the door man's wages. Atleast Justin understood the concept of customer service. I thank him for the offer anyway and head to Mango's instead - u just can't go wrong there. Treated like royalty for half the price and half the pretentious people. Also went Liv, Mansion, Nikki Beach during my visit and had no problems getting in and treated like VIP's. Mokai is clearly a bit of an upscale club (and we all were very smartly dressed) but I just wish Matt's email SAID SOMETHING about table service not guaranteeing entry. Not even a small print! Then at least you know the risk(s). Max the short doorman doesn't have a clue about customer service. Management should get this joker off the door asap. There was a soccer player in there; his minimum must have been a lot higher than my $1k min. He went outside for a smoke and was stopped coming back in by this door man!!!! Somebody had to let him know who he was stopping before he let him back in. Wonder how this guy survives when he's not working and in charge of something. Poor guy. Feel a bit sorry for him tbh. Anyway, can't comment on the club, only the service - which as you can gather was largely awful thanks to short doorman and the VIP DIRECTOR - not being able to decide who goes into VIP! We went to Miami on Memorial Day, and it wasn't quite the usual crowd Miami usually attracts- so we went to Mokai our first night in town. Mokai was completely empty when we got there, but it filled up quickly. Music was great, but I'm docking a star for a truly ridiculous credit card policy. Once you put your card down, you can only go back to the server who took it from you. And be wary- the ATM charges $7 a pop. read more

Instead, we paid $250 + $56 for 6 Red Bulls and an arbitrary $20 "entertainment fee" which was tipped and taxed ON TOP, coming out to over $400. I reached out over the phone, over email, and their online form and never heard back. Thanks for blatantly stealing my money!!!! Plus, the club wasn't even very fun. Music was all trash hip hop. Don't come here. Wish I could rate it but didn't even get in. The ushers are horribly rude to everyone in line, promote "standing your ground", which means promoting violence, to keep your place at the front of the line, yet still don't let you in even when you're in the front. The ushers curse at people in line and are especially rude to women. Don't trust promoters about this club, they can't do anything to get you in - they say get there before 12:30 to get in for free when you have the wristband they sold you, but if there's a line, forget it. We stood at the front for 45 minutes while they let underage girls through claiming they had a reservation. They also charge more for men to get in. Was in Miami about a month ago we went to this club on a Monday night (which apparently is the night to go) There was no line just a small crowd. I was with my boyfriend. They told us they were only taking vip tables at the moment so after a few minutes I asked how much would a bottle of champagne be he said $450 minimum. I use to love this club. I went Saturday with friends that were visiting from up north. It has changed so much. The club was empty, it smells horrible like mold/ mildew. All the decor was gone. What can I say about Mokai. For years I've heard the term Mokai Mondays coined around this city. I've always been Intrested and intrigued by this mysterious spot, but after 2 times of trying to get in this is the last straw. I will say i have been to LiV and although the cover charge can be steep (especially if a big time Artist is in attendance) the staff is friendly and even the doormen are welcoming. Mokai on the other hand, has the rudest doormen I've ever seen in my life. One guy had the audacity to tell me that if i want to get in i would have to get a section or he could get me a "deal" of $350 bar tab. EXCUSE ME?????? LIV on Sunday isn't even that expensive. The fact that he wanted me to pay that much just to walk into the door is ludicrous. the staff at the door is rude and are willing to swindle any penny and dime out of travelers (or locals) to make them feel exclusive. The music is pretty decent ~ the look of the place is okay. I would give them a better review however my purse with all my personal belongings was stolen while I was there. Granted I should have kept a closer look on my things no one who works there made any attempt to help me locate my things when I reported it to them. This took place while I was in their VIP section. They were eager to take my $$ when I bought the overly priced bottle of vodka but showed zero remorse toward me after my things were taken from me. I highly doubt I will ever go there again. I read the reviews on Yelp and other places, and we were prepared for rude pickers and service. But it turned out to be the opposite! There were no problems getting in at all! And no attitude from pickers or bouncers. In fact, we thought the service throughout the night was quite good. It was the people trying to get in that was horrible. Trying to throw names around, acting bossy with the pickers, etc. Those are probably the people giving bad ratings. My only complaint was that there wasn't enough service at the bar. That evening was packed because EDX NOxcuses event was happening. My boyfriend had to wait for so long to get drinks. Another bartender did show up later, and it helped alleviate the problem. But the bar staff were still friendly and smiling even though people were complaining. Drinks are expensive here, but you need to expect that at places like this. If you want cheap drinks, go to a sports bar or buy a 6 pack at the grocery store and drink it at home. Mokai is better than the reviews, I think. read more

They call it a lounge, but in reality it is a club. This place is small, and is basically set up as a VIP club with seating and tables covering the majority of the space. The rest of the people are just fillers, they are just there to make sure the place looks packed. Every time I have been there, I never had a problem getting in, the music was okay, not my favorite. Since the place is so small it gets really hot in there, and the last time I went I had to leave because my eyes began to sting from a mixture of too much CO2 form the canisters, the smoke from cigarettes, and I am a smoker, and the poor air circulation. read more

I never write reviews but the service was so terrible that I needed to share this. I went for the pop-up garden bar Smashed Flamingo, but because it started raining they opened up Mokai so we could stay dry. After ordering a drink from the cocktail menu, the bartender said she was out of the bourbon punch, but it was clear she didn't know how to make it because it was just bourbon, orange juice, iced tea and lime...which they had each of. I went for another drink and asked for a Lagunita to which she said she was out and only had one other beer which I accepted. I went to another bartender after that and he showed me an entire fridge of Lagunitas and other beers. A friend of mine was then asking the new bartender for some gluten free drinks since he has celiacs, and the previous clueless bartender came barging in rudely asking why my friend was there since he can't drink beer and continued aggressively arguing with him. Even after living in Miami my whole life, I was honestly shocked at how immature she was acting, especially when my friend was on the other side of the bar not even talking to her. At first I thought she was just clueless but now she was rude...completely unprofessional and lacking customer service. To top it off, as we were leaving, one of the bouncers was blocking our car saying we had to pay him $20 so we can get out. There was NO signs posted claiming private property, no parking zone, or a tow away zone. I called the cops to resolve the problem. At the end of the day, they had great music and I had a good time, but this place seriously needs new management. You know what? Maybe I was too critical the first time I came around Mokai, but my second experience wasn't too big a difference. We got in and a friend's client was visiting from out of town so it was a "business meeting." As we walked in a friendly face, Bill Kearney-editor of Thrillist Miami, was sharing my angst in PR babbles with his own party. We made eye contact and just gave each other that "what-are-you-going-to -do, its-South-Beach" look. This time around I got to dance (and they repeated a couple of songs on their playlist-that's dj suicide). Of the noted "high profile" celebs in the house I would consider Ceaser, the Dog Whisperer the coolest. He was very nice and said hello to everyone - didn't even close off his table. Other noted "celebs" was the tattoo dude Darren Brass and his merry men of the tattoo dudes (which is very 2003). They all made the grand entrance, paraded around the entire place before ending up on the far side of the club isolated from everyone else and right next to the bathrooms (hehe). The bar backs and runners were pretty attentive in keeping the area around our table clean. The bathrooms are annoying, I had to wait a good 20 minutes to use the loo. read more

I may be biased because our first time was with someone who works there. I went to Mokai on a friday night. The music started out as dance and electro but later they played hip hop. It was very busy and we had a table. Bottles were flowing all night and it was a friends birthday. The GoGo dancers were super hot and I loved the look and the ropes that they used. I didn't think the dancers were overly vulgar but I'm a former GoGo myself and always root for other girls. Later some body painted dancers came out covered in white paint and wearing horns. That was odd to me but no one else seemed to care. There was also a little person in a jester costume and porn playing on tvs. It was an experience! I felt it was very sexy, very miami and I enjoyed myself apart from the girls with horns. I would go back on hip hop night. read more

Extremely disappointed at the extremely poor level of service exhibited on my one and only visit to this lounge. I had friends from all over the U.S. visiting Miami Beach on a Saturday night (7 female, 1 male). One of my female friends had met one of Mokai's event promoters (Eduardo) the day before who had promised that if she came with all her lady friends to this new establishment, they and a couple of male friends would be given a table with complementary drinks for the night, at a cost of only $40 for the entire group. We imagined this was their way of promoting the lounge and decided to give it a try. As soon as we got to the entrance, we got a really bad display of customer service. First, we mentioned the promoter's name and the promise he had made to us. The man at the front door (door manager), stated that we would have to speak with Eduardo directly about this and he didn't know whether he was there or not. We called and waited around 20 minutes without any luck at reaching Eduardo. Finally, someone got in from inside and Eduardo came up to the front and told us he would take care of things. Eduardo then went on to have a n argument with the door manager in front of us. The door manager cursed out Eduardo and told him to shut up in front of all of us. Then the door manager told us we could get in, but it would be $80 (not $40 as promised earlier). We had already invested a good 40 minutes in driving and waiting, so we decided to just go ahead and pay the modified amount. Once inside, we were taken to a couch, where we were told that only the 7 ladies could sit, but myself and my other male friend, would have to stand. Ok, no problem. We waited maybe 10 minutes, no free alcohol drinks as promised, and other strangers were being directed to our table as well. Worse yet, one of the other employees told us we had to move from the table because" someone else had purchased it." At this point, my friends just head to the bar to buy our own drinks. I decide to go outside instead, to look for the door manager and let him know that there seems to be a misunderstanding. At this point, I have not had one drink, and as a licensed attorney, that deals with difficult situations all the time, I speak in a very professional manner to the door manager. Unfortunately, the door manager is not interested at all at hearing what I have to say and instead of trying to fix the situation or apologize for the confusion, he starts asking me, why I am raising my voice. I explain that I am not raising my voice in a very calm manner, but it seems, this is a technique they use, in order to have grounds to say they kick you out of an establishment. So instead of helping me, he proceeds to walk me out of the entrance. I tell him that if he wants me out, that is fine, but that I must go inside and get my friends, so they can leave with me. He doesn't pay any attention to my pleas. About 15 minutes pass, while I continue to plea with the entrance employees to allow me to retrieve my friends, when finally I am let back inside. I find my friends at the bar, and they agree to leave after they finish their current drinks. A couple of minutes later, Eduardo passes by and tells us there is another table and this time everything is going to be ok. He takes us to another table, we sit, again there are no free drinks and two minutes later, another employee comes and tells us that we have to move out of that table because someone just paid for it. AGAIN? we get up and decide to leave after the current drinks we purchased are finished. Just when I think this nightmare of a night is about to end, Eduardo comes over to me, gets very close and wraps his arms around me like I was a close friend of his and starts telling me that because I "complained" about the establishment, that we were not going to be given the free table with drinks after all. The table that we never received anyways. For the next couple of minutes, Eduardo, clearly half-drunk on the job, keeps taunting me about how I ruined it for all my friends. I finally tell him, that I do not wish to speak with him, that I am an attorney and know what an assault and battery are and that he is committing one by keeping to wrap his sweaty arms around me. Eduardo then tells me that he makes more money in a week than I make in an entire year. I keep quiet. He then tells me that he also sleeps with more women in one week that I do in an entire year. I again let him know that this conversation is over and that he needs to stay away from me. He finally gets the idea and leaves us alone. We left the establishment right away. This was a very horrible experience; my friend's Saturday night was ruined because of the horrendous attitudes of these Mokai employees. Lastly, none of the employees would tell me their names after I asked. I still hope that through my comments and complaint I will be able to help other people. Be warned! read more

I hadn't been in Mokai for many years. But I heard they redid the place so I had to go. Some friends and I went in and had some drinks at the bar. It was really easy to get a drink even though it was busy with great music ! The staff was hot and the music was out of control. Monday is definitely the best night and the knot place to be on Monday on south beach. The door was packed and a bit of a wait to get in. This club was terrible. It is so tiny- no dance floor at all. There are tons of tables that get super packed - I mean like 30 people per table- it's ridiculous. Clearly this club caters to people silly enough to spend an obscene amount of money on bottle service/vip. If you're looking to have a few drinks and dance - stay away! It's nearly impossible to grab a drink from the bar because it's so crowded- and like i mentioned before, there's no dance floor.
