Best farm to table resturant we have been to! Loved that they are a zero waste resturant and have an abundant supply of napkins which we needed with our toddler. Our Farm to table chef extraordinaire hand picked these black-raspberries in kula served with a waffle drizzled in honey and jabuticaba pea berry tea with a fennel flower. I cant even comment on the food as we had a horrible experience with the staff and that overshadowed everything. We found this place on google while visiting Maui and ordered pick up one night. Since they were closing up while we came in to pick up food(Tuesday), i was trying to rush and didnt realize until after I paid that I was charged $20 for the to-go boxes. No one had mentioned that before, and when I asked the staff who gave my order (Rachel) , she said she thought we knew about it. She said we would get the deposit back if we returned the boxes. Since I had already paid, I had not choice but to leave and plan to come back the next day to return the boxes. When we came in the next day(wednesday), we found a sign on the door that the place was closed that day for an employee party. We would have definitely appreciated a heads up the previous day when we had talked abt the returning of the boxes. We were flying out Thursday afternoon at 2 pm, and were planning to hopefully return this box as soon as the place opens up at 10:30am, eventhough that is a later than when we would have liked to be at the airport, since we didnt want to trash the boxes or lose the "deposit". We tried to contact them on facebook, leave voice messages, asking if there was a way to return the boxes earlier and finally we got a response from someone called "Alexa" on facebook saying we could come by around 9:30 am on Thursday while they were preparing to open for the day. I thought this was awesome as we could leave a little earlier to the airport and not wait till the opening time. We reached the restaurant at around 10 am and my husband ran in to return the boxes while i was in the car with my baby and toddler. He came back saying that they wouldnt open the door or talk to him in anyway. He tried calling them on phone to explain that we were asked to come at 9:30 but none would pick up the phone, as they could see it was him calling them through the doors. Finally distraught, i came to the door as well, with my kids and we were all trying to show the boxes and tell them that we were there just to return the boxes, as we were asked to come by Alexa. Each and every one of the staff, including the waitress who I had the interaction with on Tuesday during pick up(Rachel), ignored us eventhough they could hear what we were saying. It was really demeaning to stand outside like we were beggars, while everyone inside just ignored us. We would have left , but at this point, i really didnt want to let them get away with them treating us like this, especially when they had asked us to come. My husband finally went through the back to explain the situation and one of the staff (Iam guessing the owner?) came over to open the door. When I tried to explain that we were standing outside at the direction of ALexa to return the boxes, Rachel told me to stop yelling . I was visibly upset at standing outside with my two kids in the hot sun, requesting them to just listen to us , like we were human beings and not ignore us. Obviously if someone is standing with two of their delivery boxes and waving( they could also hear us, mind you), the decent thing to do would be atleast to ask what the hell we needed. The lady who finally opened the door did return the deposit money and asked if I needed a hug lol.. i dont know if it was patronizing or not, but I took it, as I totally broke down at this point, as I was totally upset at this whole situation and stressed abt being late to the airport. There were no apologies even after knowing that we were there since Alexa asked us to come, everyone just stared at us like we were invading their space.For a place that is trying to do something good with zero wastage, I felt they didnt have a matching attitude and absolutely no aloha spirit. I would not visit here again. How you treat people is more important than all the hype you create online abt this place. read more

The place is pretty hip and cool, and the staff is incredibly nice! But I'll explain why I only rate 3 stars. It is the food. It's definitely not the best one I have had, especially in Hawaii. For the taste and presentation of the food, the price shouldn't be around $14-$15 per dish. I totally understand that the restaurant tries to make everything from fresh local ingredients, but it's still very pricey for a pretty small portion of the dish. I'm still not yet full, which is why this is my final thought of the restaurant. If you are a visitor, new to town, you should definitely give it a try and draw your own judgment. But if you are a resident here, check out the menu first before you make your decision :-) read more

On a search for all the vegan places in Maui, Moku Roots was on our list. We almost couldn't find it in the shopping center, as Google Maps kept taking us in the wrong direction, but eventually we found it and made our way in. The menu is amazing - so many homemade vegan dishes - we don't have any place like this back home in San Diego! My friend and I arrived on a Sunday during brunch back in May and split the banana peel carnitas burrito and pancakes. WOW! I never knew banana peels could taste so amazing. The horchata was tasty too. We came back a few days later and I got the taro burger - seriously, it was so good! We also ordered a piece of chocolate cake, which was super rich and wonderful. If you are looking for a place that is fresh, vegan (even if you aren't one!), sustainable, and absolutely delicious, this is the one. Everything that we had was top notch and everything was from local farms on Maui or made from scratch. Even the kombucha they served was made in house. All their drinks were fresh and local. Their taro burgers were delicious and their warm bowls were fresh and filling. Can't miss out on their yuca fries either. The owner was kind and helpful, making sure that we knew what were the best options since she could tell it was our first time. The ambiance was hard to beat, with a cozy feel that was highlighted by the inside plants, wooden features, warm lights, etc. In general, I would recommend this to anyone who wants something fresh and delicious while supporting all things local on Hawaii since that is a focal point of this business. read more

Not impressed, maybe my expectations were too high. We had ordered their specials, vegetarian fried rice and sushi. The fried rice portion was okay, the taste was kind of bland. The sushi quantity was good, but the taste was missing something. They don't offer high chairs for infants. They serve your food, but the customer service was mediocre. We were greeted by the cashier, but the waitress who delivered our food did not ask if we need anything and no once came back to ask how the food was. We left unsatisfied and feeling hungry. First timer and definitely not my last. I adore this place. It's so cute with a local touch. They support local and source locally. They have many vegan and vegetarian options. Their menu is quite big too. You can find something to accommodate almost any diet. They pride themselves on zero waste. This is my favorite part of this eatery. They use mason jar glasses, cotton napkins that are washed and reused. They only use silverware and plates. It's very green in here. From live plants to the green couch. It's very comfortable. It's perfect for a casual lunch or a healthy dinner. Its average price considering they source responsibly. They have some retail items like Lahaina heat hot sauce and some tank tops and other clothing items with their mokuroots logo. They also have zero waste items like stainless steal straws and reusable cutlery. Definitely a must for those vegan or vegetarian lifestyles. I had the taro burger and it's was great! I added avocado to it. It's great and the patty is nice and compact. It is a little messy to eat. But overall taste was great!! The pickles were a nice touch too. I really like the concept of this place. I had the vegan pizza and my husband had the burger. The crust of the pizza tastes like falafel. Then there was some sliced potatoes, a sun-dried tomato sauce, pineapple chunks, red peppers and the coconut bacon all topped with the cheese sauce. It has a spicy flavor that primarily tasted like the falafel crust. My husband's burger was very dense and not particularly flavorful. The burger toppings, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles were flavorful and fresh. We also had the lavender lemonade. It was great. It wasn't overly sweet. read more

Fabulous food if you're vegetarian, vegan, or neither. We came for dinner and had to go back for breakfast the next day because it was so good. Fabulous hummus, the Caesar wrap is awesome, the pancakes were delicious, and the BLT wrap was my favorite. We order family style by the way, though I might've wanted to eat all of that myself. The best part--no waste. No to go bags or plastic ware or any of that. Your takeout is wrapped in tea leaves and the straws are made from the papaya plant. My wife and I visited Moku Roots last week while on an anniversary trip to Maui. We had not eaten at a completely vegetarian/vegan restaurant before but were soon pleasantly surprised at how tasty and filling the food turned out to be including the mushroom tacos and taro fingers. Everything tasted great including their in house made veggie cheese sauce and hot sauce. The service was very good and the kind staff who took our order was very helpful in educating us on their food. Service to the table was prompt and friendly. I had really high hopes for this place. Love that they are zero waste and they mark all the menu items clearly. Food was tasty but I wouldn't call it delicious. I am glad I tried it but the portions were on the smaller side. I am sure there is something to be said about your entree being served in a pineapple though. My favorite place on West Maui! Absolutely amazing and just so great! They even have water in a jug (I think it is copper) Most people don't realize the difference in how you should handle your drinking water. Food selection is off the charts! They have everything you can want and more. I have not tried their drinks but the yin hang toast was so delicious! I ended up coming here for many meals during my 12 day stay and I never once was dissatisfied! Also the staff is super cool and I enjoyed their vibes even when they are stressed they don't let it flow to the customer, at least in my experience. Chefs everyone is nice and food was 5/5. I have my take out box so when I come back in Feb I can use it again! Ps no bags or stuff that pollutes the ocean/land. Is pretty expensive but I live in the Bay Area so it is even more expensive here sometimes. Try the candied bacon it is AMAZING!! They are extremely creative with their dishes and I love that all the ingredients are locally sourced. Their drinks are delicious! Deserts are so good I cannot believe they are vegan! Food was fine but was woefully insufficient/unsatisfying. Taro Burger was tiny with thin bun and 3 pickled beans on the side.
