I was so disappointed with the two pies that we bought for a Birthday Party. Lemon Meringue has always been a favorite but this one was just horrible. The lemon looked and tasted like Jell-O !! Three people started out with the Lemon and couldn't even finish eating it because it was so bad. The crust was tasteless in the blackberry pie and not enough blackberries. I absolutely love this place. I remember coming here when I was a little girl. We usually come here after our Sunday road trips. The sandwiches are pretty yummy but the side of potato salad tasted like it was store bought. The reason I gave it four stars is for the pies. I love the pies. This was better than expected. I was really adamant about getting a well-made, authentic, organic, grandma-baked apple pie...even though I'm not sure what that would taste like and the 3.5 stars and reviews were a little worrisome. That being said, 4 different people from different places said this was a must-try so we ended up coming here at the end of the day. And you know what....warm this up and serve with some vanilla ice cream and I am super happy. It's not super sweet, which I love and has much more of a natural pie flavor. read more

Nice 'no sugar added' pies which are sweet (but not too sweet) and tart (but not too tart). I like the blackberry one we had made with local blackberries and the apple turnover. The real standout however was the apple/banana/walnut bread for a dollar a slice it was AWESOME! Service needs improvement (the kid at the counter was a little aloof) but otherwise serviceable. We got to stop going there! Every time we stopped at Mom's we ended up getting a large pie and a tub of Straus's ice cream. We would then finish the entire thing in no more one day and half. Their blackberry pie is the best unlike anything I tasted before. The lady there was really nice and let us try before we bought a big one. The deli sandwiches were ok, but not cheap. Certainly nothing to write home about and we got a medium wild blueberry pie to take home. They all looked so delicious we couldn't resist. If we had eaten it there I might have asked for a refund or exchange. The crust was dry and flavorless and the filling was uninspired. Right where 116 and Guernville Rd. meet...lies one of my old favorites from when I was a kid - Mom's Apple Pie. Tons of fresh baked, delicious looking pies...and in all my 22 yrs, I don't think I've ever tried one! HA! Crazy! I used to come here on a rare treat to get a turkey, bacon sandwich on a sourdough roll. One of my old time favorites. Definitely not one of the cheaper sandwiches you're going to get. Seems like they charge you for everything you put on there these days...cheese, avocado (that's usually a given, but still...) Mom's is great. It's one of those places everyone knows and loves. But I feel like their sandwich quality has gone down. I wasn't too thrilled with the last few I've picked up there, especially what they are charging for them. The service was fine, the berry tart was heaven, the pies were "homemade" - for better and for "worse" (Hey, they aren't pretty but holy cow they taste good.) We followed advice and had lunch elsewhere but there was a couple enjoying their lunch while we were there. They looked satisfied and it looked/smelled yummy, so I might go against popular opinion and try a sandwich next time. A whole star comes off for BAD coffee. Yes, I know it's not a coffee shop - but c'mon, coffee just GOES with pie (and tarts). I'm not even a coffee person (thus far less judgmental) and - yuck. If you're going to use this name, you better deserve the title -- and she does. This little bakery has been around for a generation and clearly thrived for a reason. I wouldn't call the ambiance homey, but then again, you're not there for the view. In the heart of the Russian River Valley, this region has long been known for Gravenstein apples, and the pies are outstanding and loaded with fruit. You can choose from apple or other seasonal delectables (rhubarb, strawberry, peach, etc..) And of course, the flaky crust is what puts it over the top. Super yum. read more

Fantastic apple pie. Not too sweet. not too buttery. You can actually taste the local apples. But I still think Gizdich Ranch in Watsonville has the best pies in the bay area. This place is a bit pricey (compared to Watsonville) but I guess everything in wine country is expensive. Here, in this modest structure exists a hidden treasure known only to locals and connoisseurs - it is quite possibly the world's most delicious pie. Why? The pies are free of the gelatin products that make most pie-fillings an unsettling mass of jiggling corn syrup. Mom's pies are beautiful in their simplicity - no two look exactly alike - because they are actually made by hand. The filing is made out of fruit, not just "with fruit," and you can taste the difference in its purity. As the name suggests, this is primarily a pie shop, though they do serve sandwiches and soups. Mom's has a fair amount of inside and outside seating, making it a great place for people with kids. I only once tasted their sandwiches, and my lunch was just fine - however, I soon realized that a filling lunch spoils my appetite for pie, and that seems counter productive. If you're one of those people who feel guilty for eating dessert without anchoring it to some sort of meal, then Mom's has you covered. I love pie - all kinds of pie. When we saw the sign out front - all I saw was "Pie", so we had to stop. I wish I would have checked the reviews here first. MP's review here is spot on - unfortunately. My fave pie in the whole world is strawberry rhubarb. They have it here and we got one of the minnie one's to split between the two of us. The filling seemed lacking - both in volume and that it seemed to be missing something. The crust was ok; but, maybe a little sugar on top or something would have kicked it up a bit? In hindsight, maybe we should have tried the Gravenstein apple pies - we were in Gravenstein country and that pie was a sky high one. I went out of my way to come here for lunch today, because...well, we love pie. I had read the reviews about so-so sandwiches but FABULOUS pie, and I thought it was worth the trade-off. We both ordered the Vegetarian Sandwich, which was tasty, but I little skimpy. Turns out they had forgotten the cheese, and we were eating lettuce and tomatoes on really good bread. Came with about 1/4 cup of potato salad, which was very tasty. The pies? They don't serve it by the slice, so we both ordered a 6" "personal pie" (I love the concept). One apple and one cherry. Meh. The crust was very good, the fillings standard. Certainly good enough to stop if we happened to be in the neighborhood; not good enough to make a 12-mile special trip. We heard so much about Mom's Pies when we were traveling through Sebastobol. Luckily we bought only the small apple pie since it did not taste good just mushy filling in a non-flaky crust. Wow! We were on our way back from brunch in Graton, and saw on the side of the road Mom's apple pie. We had to stop, and were not disappointed. It is not a fancy decor, but I have to admit that the best place I ever ate were neither with the fanciest decor nor price tag. Anyway, we tried the wild blueberry pie, banana cream pie, both amazing. It is not too sweet, and the dough is nice and flaky. We took a pecan pie too, good but not the best. Yeah, This spot is wonderful! I may have indeed been biased by the bellyful of wine from Iron Horse Vineyards that was filling me prior to my arrival, but alas I can say this hit the spot in a great way. Just a mom and pop deli on the side of the beautiful wine country highway. We were recommended this lunch spot by our driver-a local and clearly a good food and drink fanatic- and knowing that what we were graving was simple sandwiches at a small no frills outdoor picnic table, he hit the nail on the head. I am sad we did not indeed try to apple pie, but again, the wine was taking up a lot of belly space at the time and we didn't think ahead enough to go that far. I am intrigued to learn that in California, locals do not care to differentiate their sandwiches as we do on the East Coast. Haogies, Subs, Heros (?), whatever... it's all just a sandwich. Nice, bright interior and a friendly young staff. There are sandwiches that can be ordered to eat in or take out. They've good enough, a typical deli sandwich. They each come with a side, and I'm partial to the potato salad, which is probably pre-made but of pretty good quality. The fountain drinks are from a small local company, I think the name was Greer. I thought it a nice touch. You order at the counter, have a seat, and the food is brought to you. I've had lunch here a few times. Nothing fancy, but quite agreeable. There are all kinds of pies -- berry, rhubarb, creme, apricot. They are all very good. The crusts are tender, flaky, flavorful. But the apple pie is amazingly good. It truly is reminiscent of the pies my Mom and Grandmas used to make. The top crust rises, and the apple filling is sweet and juicy and delicious. The apple is my favorite (obviously) but I like to try others as well. They are all house made and really do have a home made taste. And the pies come in regular size and a smaller size. Just one caution -- avoid the no sugar pies. I decided to try one many years ago and I ended up putting a couple teaspoons of sugar on each slice when I ate it at home. I mean, come on, this is pie -- why would you not make it with sugar? Anyway, highly recommended for the pies. Try them! read more

We stopped for Apple Pie, but who couldn't when you love apple pie and you see this inviting yellow sign saying "Mom's Apple Pie"!!! My husband and I were staying at the Applewood Inn and saw this place on the way. The dough of the Apple Pie is what I loved the best; not too doughy or flaky.... tastes just like home made pie should. The Apple Turnover wasn't too sweet or doughy either! 5 stars for the Apple Pie and Apple Turnovers :) The only reason I took off 1 star is due to the price. $6.95 for a small pie and $15.95 for a large pie. My friend and I went there to pick up a pie for her grandmothers birthday....and wow..... we walked in and it smelled so good, that I HAD to order a slice of pie for myself. It was delicious! The apples (from the orchard out back) were fresh and the crust was perfect (flaky and heavenly). The young lady who served us was so sweet and friendly! Dear Mom's, I was on the way to pick my son up from his week long camping trip (for a much needed for both of us break from our norm this summer) and my co-pilots saw this place on the side of the road. I enjoy going to local places as much as I can when I'm out and this looked like a great place to go for a slice of Sebastopol. Turns out that we were right! After picking my son up, we all piled back into my car and headed down the road to lunch. We walked in and were greeted kindly like we were regulars and when it came time to order, we were given the same courtesy. Or food came up quickly and it wasn't too expensive for what we got. Each sandwich was made to order and we even got pie with lunch because the place was named for a pie. We ate and looked around the shop and our group had a question about a pie flavor and the hostess had the answers to them right away. I never knew what mincemeat pie was made of and so I steered away from it for such a long time. But my next pie may just be a mincemeat pie, and if I'm lucky, from Mom's Apple Pie! Thank you, Mom!! I am very glad that I don't live closer to this spot. We have stopped here a couple of times when the sweet tooth cannot be denied. The Natural Sugar Apple pie is just right to my liking. The apples have just the right touch of tart to make it taste homemade. I believe that my own pastry is a little better but since I don't usually have the time to bake, I'd much rather stop in here to satisfy the urge. All the other pies look good but we have only ordered the Regular Apple (very good also but definitely sweeter) and the Natural Sugar variety. read more

Apple pie baking may not be rocket science it is a science nonetheless. Many pies are either made with glorious filling or crust--rarely do they coincide. The crust can be good even great but gets some sogginess can bring down the overall pie. If the crust is exceptionally good but the filling is a bit dry then the overall apple pie experience is less than satisfying. I like Mom's Apple Pie because the apple pie is good on both parts. It is hard to get an apple pie right--the crust was beautiful---reminded me of an Amish pie. Mom's Apple Pie does have other pies but the apple pie is their signature and it is fabulous. read more
