This is the kind of place you can pass by ... day after day after day ... and wonder about how good they may or may not be ... but don't stop. Well, when I worked at a winery around the corner ... after a few weeks I realized I could get there in 5 minutes after calling in an order and it would be ready to drive back with. How many people can be around the outskirts of Sebastopol/Forestville/Santa Rosa trifecta and not stop here?!?! It's a question I asked myself for so long ... even after I finally stopped here. Well, to be fair ... the story that got me in here: My coworker disdainfully disappointingly declaims "I'm really upset they forgot ..." To this day only a month or two later, I don't remember what they forgot with the sandwich. Maybe the pickle? But I do remember he loved the fact he could replace the potato salad with an organic applesauce cup. I was just so stoked to the extreme and could barely contain myself to realize that there was any food to-go or take-away near a winery out in the cuts! It took me only two days to finally break my regular half hour routine and call in an order. I ordered the "soup of the day": Tomato Ravioli. Explained as "mini cheese filled ravioli in a basil tomato soup". Okay, sounds good enough. The soup was decent, a little thin. Used dried basil instead of fresh. And the mini ravioli were simmered for so long half of them fell apart. Still I was so hungry after working so hard ... I didn't care. I brought spices from home to top it off with the next day. The other thing I ordered was a pastrami sandwich, with applesauce as my side. The bread was wonderful!!! The sandwich was to order. I also got a pickle slice which was pretty full of seeds, so I sliced them off but still a tasty pickle bit. My only real minor complaint was that I asked for onion (extra) and it was sliced so thin and barely there that I had to open my sandwich to see IF it was there! I laughed when I found a small thin sliced clump and realized if I order again to ask for LOTS of onion to get a regular amount for a sandwich. I also ordered a salad and ate that successfully over two days. The salad and the soup were the best deal as the leftover sandwich didn't keep very well. The salad and sandwich cost the same at about $8 and the soup was $4. On a cold Autumn day sitting outside for lunch after working hard at a winery all morning makes it worth a nice bit of salad with a bit of a warm, warm soup. There was no wait on my venture in and I even bought some other stuff! I got a large bottle of organic apple cider and a 4 pack of organic apple sauce for very affordable prices. I was stoked to stock this in my work fridge and had healthy alternatives for a whole week. Sometimes a small bit of juice and other times a small bit of applesauce. Don't overdo the fruit! You'll make your digestive system too efficient at processing! Just thought I'd mention that as there is so much apple at Mom's Apple Pie you may need to pace yourself! I had a wonderful experience there. And while no longer working at a winery near there I would most certainly stop there for food on way to another destination if passing by. So to sum up: Sandwich bread is awesome, sandwiches themselves okay (stress additions/substitutions). Great organic apple products (juice, sauce, etc)! Great healthy choices for eating. Stopped in Saturday afternoon and was pleased there were pies left. I purchased a small apple and small lemon meringue. The apple has this super high crust giving the illusion it is stuffed with apples. It isn't, however the crust was light and crispy and there was plenty of fresh, sweet apples that were spiced just right. The lemon meringue was perfect. Nice a creamy and not too sour or sweet. On the way out to Forestville or Guerneville on 116 outside of Sebastopol and Santa Rosa, is Mom's. The only place I know of where people pack the pies in dry ice and mail them to their friends and relatives across the country. The lunch is normal american fare. Turkey Sandwich, Potato Salad, Meat Loaf, Caesar Salad, etc. Of course a nice fresh apple juice. Coconut Cream Pie, Cherry, Banana, and Apple Pies. Views of orchards from the eating area outside. Cheap prices. Laura who works there could not have been any nicer. I didn't realize this, but the owner Betty (Mom) is originally from Japan and her family was a prominent Samurai family. I frequent Mom's as often as I can for their No Sugar pies; "I especially like the frozen fruit pies." The natural sugars are good! I was asked to review their Pumpkin! I brought it home. I thawed it and didn't need to cook; " just reheat." I loved it. It was well prepared. It had all the pumpkin spice you're used to without going over. It had an excellent texture and held up on its own! "There wasn't any hint of canned or processed; 'no separation of ingredients (runniness...) etc..'" It's a good pie. I will buy it again. There was a balance to the taste-feel of this pumpkin. This pie might be a runner- up to Mom's N/S Apple in a contest and a legacy if it's a new addition to the menu there! Well. I'm from Southern California and working in the Forestville area temporarily. I figured this place would have better than average pies. 1st off the crust is visually un-appealing. The price for the small pies is ridiculously high for what follows. I picked the triple berry pie. It was dry. The crust is supposed to look, taste and be flaky. But then all there pies look dry. I will take this dry, below average, over-priced pie home. Heat it up and wash it down with milk. I may just throw out. Be warned. At 3 in the afternoon. If they still have plenty of pies, and nobody there snapping them up by noon, then run away. Go to a local supermarket bakery for pie. Well, maybe I read too much so my expectations were high. But I know I make pies that tase better and have a flaky crust, unlike these. These are acceptable but not worth the over pricing. I can get better tasting pies for less cost elsewhere or make it myself. And for the location they don't offer WiFi to the public. The pie at Mom's Apple Pie is consistently delicious, as well as beautiful to behold! They carry such a wide variety of pies that I would be shocked if they don't make your favorite. Mom's participates in the Sonoma County Fair and the Wednesday (?) Night Market during the summer, and I always pleased to see their red tent. If you'd like a recommendation of a pie to fall in love with, I suggest the apricot. The crust is tender and flaky, and the filling is substantial and not overly sweet. We are in strawberry rhubarb bliss, after making the Very Hard Choice of which pie to devour. I haven't been to Mom's in over 5 years so I expected changes. The cafe serving lunch and coffee is gone. There is only pie, full and half sizes. I was disappointed that the mini pies are gone as they were the perfect size to eat with a cup of coffee. I purchased a cherry and a blueberry half pie. The cherry was made with sour cherries but the crust, while handmade, was so thick and tasteless, that I just peeled the top off and ate the filling. The blueberry, made with Maine wild berries was a little better in taste and crust but I miss the flaky crust I remember as well as the mini pies. The half pies were also pricey at $15 each! This pie place is not worth returning to so I'll be looking elsewhere. read more

The teenager who sliced my coconut cream pie gave me a sliver of a piece, then she asks me if I want it in the same container as the banana cream pie slice. If you can fit 2 slices of pie into one container, that is not a slice... that's a bite. The appearance is like that of a hot air balloon, giving any reasonable person the impression that the pie is filled with apples. No, the pie is filled with air. We were in the neighborhood doing a site visit at Redwood Hill Gardens for my friend's wedding and since they were thinking of having pie at their wedding, Rosie from the gardens, suggested we check out this place. It also came up on page one when I searched for lunch places so we ended up here in the afternoon. The lunch food wasn't the best but it wasn't that bad. But the gems were the PIES! I was later in the day so they were out of the cream ones but we tried the peach, apple, and lemon meringue and they were all good. I really liked how the crust was homemade looking, tasted very flaky but not over buttery and heavy, and the insides tasted heavenly and not too sugary sweet like gross store bought pies. We even chatted briefly with the owner herself, she was such a delightful woman. There were a couple ladies who looked like regulars playing mahjong and one had mentioned they'd been doing it for years, real locals joint. Thursday Aug 19, 2021: Bought a 4inch apple pie at Moms. The high domed crust had a nice color. We cut into the pie there was an approximately 2.5 inche space between the crust and the filling. My review of this local institution is limited to just their pies, which is all that I've had from here. I've had a number of different pies from here over many years and my opinion has always been consistent - they're pretty good but not great. I haven't reviewed it before for a variety of reasons, one being that there have been few true pie places around to which to compare, until recently, and this place has always been better that the mass-produced junk one can get at typical places like chain restaurants. We also frequently make our own pies from scratch and while "Mom's" were never as good, I've always found that to be a somewhat distorted basis for comparison. Anyway, I feel it's now time to review it, in part because of the growth of small pie shops everywhere, and specifically here. As I noted, my opinion has been consistent and that leads to the first point, that the pies have themselves been pretty much consistent every time over the years, which is overall a plus. However, the crust is just basically good. It is not hard, a common problem in pie crusts (usually related to the fat mixture and how it is worked in), and it is generally soft and decent. However, it is rather bland and nondescript, devoid of buttery flakiness. The fillings are similar. The fruit pies, for instance, are less sweet and gelatinous than in typical commercial pies but they still are all fairly one-dimensional and nondescript. Apple pie is a decent pie with lots of big apple chunks, raspberry pie and blueberry pie have lots of fruit. but I find none good enough to really want. For example, the blueberry is basic blueberry sweetness, the raspberry is overly tart-sour, lacking balance, and thickly gooey. The apple has too much one-note "apple pie spice" character. read more

In the past years, a good friend of mine always brought us an apple pie from Mom's Apple Pie everytime he visited me in Napa. My friend has't visited for over 6 months so I was craving for the Apple pie. Then we decided to drive to Mom's Apple Pie to buy pies two months ago, We bought a large Apple pie, large banana cream pie, and a small chocolate cream pie. All three pies were kept in the fridge. We ate and finished the banana cream pie the first day. It was delicious and creamy and fluffy. Then the next day before we cutted the apple pie, we found mold on the crust. We had to throw the entire pie away. Then we still had the small chocolate cream pie left and we ate it and it was good. Three days ago we went to Mom's Apple Pie's again. We bought three pies. One large banana cream pie, small apple pie, and a small pumpkin pie. All three pies are unbelieveable bad. The banana cream pie was totally different from the first time that we bought. It was custard like in the pie with slices of banana. We would called this a banana pie, not banana cream pie. We bought it in the morning and by the time we cutted the pie after lunch, the slices of banana were black. We had no choice and tossed it after two we ate 1/8 of it. Ok! Then when we thought it is hard to go wrong with the pumpkin pie and apple pie. Guess what? We found many little thick pieces that taste like plastic and seeds in the apple pie. Then when we bite on the pumpkin pie, it is like biting on sand. It has a crunch. The quality is going downhill and we will not go back again. read more

Decided to try a raspberry pie after driving past this place for ten years. I'll try it again in ten years. Young lady behind the counter was pleasant. I almost fell over when $27 popped up on the pay screen! I reluctantly bought it, thinking "I hope this is the best pie of my life!" The pie is fairly good, one notch above the $7 pies from Speers Market down the road.....but felt like I had paid to keep Mom's hot tub at 97 degrees in January......and I wasn't invited to come skinny dip with her! I'll be back to try a different pie. We bought a whole small lemon meringue and a slice of apple. First of all, the sales lady was a dream! Friendly! Professional! Nice lady. And I forgot her name... Dark long hair, maybe around 50 years? The lemon pie was forgettable. Both the filing and the meringue wasn't sweet enough or tart enough. My husband and I are our pies then both compared notes. Our reactions were the same. The pies were just meh. Middle of the road. Didn't have enough kick to make them really good, but not bad enough to be bad. It was the oddest thing! The crusts were not flakey. I was told they were vegan. I prefer a rich flavorful buttery flaky crust. They would benefit from a touch more salt. The apples were cooked well, not crunchy (I don't care for crunchy). But again, note sweet or tart. Just mid road. All the fruit pies looked chock full of fruit! They don't skimp on filling. My wife and I have visited Mom's several times in the past and been quite pleased with their wares. Lately however things have not been up to par with their pies. Our last was a cherry, and thought the crust was good, it hid the fact that there was very little filling under it. Approx. 2 Table spoons max on their small cherry pie. In the past the filling has been up to the lip of the tin it comes in. Very disappointing. I bought a full sized apple pie and a small pecan pie. The pecan pie was great and was gone quickly. The apple pie, my wife and son had and said it tasted like apple sauce, not much in the way of actual apples. They did not like it and said it was "mushy". I bought it on Sunday and took it back on Tuesday with two slices missing. They asked for my receipt, which I did no keep. The pie is $17.95 if I remember correctly. I asked to just exchange for another pie. They said they can't do that and can't give me my money back either. They asked me to leave my phone number and "She" will give me a call. Poor customer service, it was a really easy fix, just exchange it for another pie. I will not be going back. I make better apple pies. (But like I said, the pecan was really good.) I was so disappointed with the two pies that we bought for a Birthday Party. Lemon Meringue has always been a favorite but this one was just horrible. The lemon looked and tasted like Jell-O !! I was really excited to try this place but ended up being very disappointing. -1star: I'm not sure if this particular pie had been over cooked or if this is standard, but the apple filling was mush with no actual texture of apples or apple slices... the filling was literally like eating apple sauce (see picture). I've never had an apple pie like that -1star: After cutting into it, I quickly noticed the seemingly large pie shell only had about 50% filling in it, leaving a very deceivingly large gap of empty space inside the pie shell (see picture). You're literally getting half of what you think you're paying for. -1star: Price. Their pies range from $19-20 (this one being $20). I have no problem buying a $20 pie but I have a certain expectation of it. I've had $10 safeway apple pies that were much better. Overall: Paid $20 for an "apple sauce pie with a roof". A number of years ago, I was talking to my friend in Seattle about pie making. I wanted to learn. She offered to show me the tricks she'd learned. I flew up for the weekend. At two in the morning, we made possibly the worst apple pie in the history of pie. Still I somehow learned how to make a great pie. This is how I'm able to give Mom's 5 stars. It's a humble place. It's not too attractive inside. It's simple. The outside is pleasant but nothing special. The people are friendly but not trying to talk your ear off and become your new best friend. They standby their product. And, they should. It's really good. We had peach pie and strawberry/rhubarb. Both were yummy. Perfectly in season. Sat outside near the funky trashcan sculpture. Perfect pre-dinner treat. Fond memories. if you're in the mood for pie and nearby, come on by. Mom's will treat you right. Mom's is an old-fashioned pie shop in the middle of Gravenstein Apple country, and is worth a stop if you're passing by. I am serious about my pie, and found Mom's apple pie to be very acceptable. The filling is absolutely first-rate made from obviously fresh apples and a well-balanced blend of top-quality ingredients. Mom's crust seemed a little *too* flaky - I like a slightly firmer crust with enough structural integrity to contain the pie. The crust also could have used a bit more flavor - it seemed like a bland mixture of flour and shortening. Mom also sells fresh-pressed Gravenstein apple cider which is absolutely first-rate and they make a very good root beer float. Mom's Apple Pie shop is definitely worth a stop if you're passing through Sebastopol. Note: Google seems to think that this shop is at 4550 Gravenstein Hwy *S*. The shop is at 4550 Gravenstein Hwy *N*, which some GPSes think is a different location. Do not follow the wrong directions or you will end up standing around on the side of a highway, bewildered and pie-less. read more

We got to stop going there! Every time we stopped at Mom's we ended up getting a large pie and a tub of Straus's ice cream. We would then finish the entire thing in no more one day and half. Their blackberry pie is the best unlike anything I tasted before. The lady there was really nice and let us try before we bought a big one. I absolutely love this place. I remember coming here when I was a little girl. We usually come here after our Sunday road trips. The sandwiches are pretty yummy but the side of potato salad tasted like it was store bought. The reason I gave it four stars is for the pies. I love the pies.
