Our visit here was very disappointing.. The rooms were very dated and were not cleaned very thoroughly: everything was very dusty and a lot cobwebs and hairs everywhere. Also the furniture and sanitary was falling apart and malfunctioning. The shower is terrible: the spray was so little that it took me half an hour to get the conditioner out of my hair (admitted that I do have very long hair) The building is very noisy: we could hear everything (but really EVERYTHING.. TMI) from our upstairs neighbours... who unfortunately got out of bed 3 times per night to go to the toilet. The stomping and flushing noises literally kept us up. The rooms were not cleaned daily: which was explained as due to the water shortage in CA. But honestly they could at least just vacuum, dust, re-fill your coffee etc. and make the bed. No need to use water for those tasks. Now you are paying for hotel facilities while you can actually better compare to a B&B service. On the day the room was cleaned, it was not even cleaned very well and nothing was re-filled. The "luxury breakfast" is also a bit over-advertised as it is really only a table with pre-packed stuff and almost all sweet items. I guess if you like your egg's to be blue (hard boiled), it's fine.. The only positive we found to be the working fireplace in the room and the kind staff at the front desk. So definitely not worth the money unfortunately and we will not come back here. read more

This review is based on my reservations and customer service only! Last week I booked a king suite with fireplace for this upcoming weekend (valentines!!) First problem: I didn't even receive my confirmation email. Fine. I decided to wait a few days. Today, still no conf email I check online, and it says I booked a queen room!! I called them right away, the lady who answered the phone put me on hold, and the. I was "disconnected". I called again. She sounded annoyed! I told her I was sorry to bother her, but I explained my problem and she said "We don't have any more fireplace rooms." I was so upset and she didn't even offer an apology or a way to keep me, the customer, satisfied. I asked to speak to a supervisor and I was, again, put on hold, and yes again, I got "disconnected"! I called back for the last time, and canceled my entire reservation!!! Worst customer service EVERRRR. read more

I'm not sure why there are so many low reviews because this place is wonderful. My family and I have spent the last two weekends in Pacific Grove because we needed to escape the crazy summer heat in the valley. Last weekend we stayed at the Lighthouse lodge and this weekend we came to the Monarch Resort. Everyone agreed that the Monarch Resort was more comfortable (bed was way more comfortable) , better priced (almost 100 dollars cheaper) and better customer service. The fireplace was lovely (helped us by drying out our son's wetsuit) and the jacuzzi was the perfect way to end the day after being in the cold ocean. We will definitely be coming back. read more

We used booking.com and got a great deal on a room here that had a fire place with a free long (additional logs were only $5) a baloney and there's a heated pool, hot tub, and steam room. We only used the pools though. The room was nice and very clean and the lobby hallways were large with lots of natural sunlight and plants. However the customer service is the cause for only 3 stars My boyfriend and I stopped by a little early to see if we could check in an hour or two early since it was raining if not we'd go do something else until then. The lobby was dead silent and then parking lot as well as inside was empty it was sort if creepy there was one older lady at the front desk who did not seem happy to see us at all. The room ended up being ready she was very informative but cold and rude to us. I'm not sure if it was because were in our mid 20s or that we got a really cheap room rate from booking on a different sight but we were still paying guests. One of our room keys didn't work and the sliding door to the baloney (which was only a few feet from the ground) didn't lock sketchy. read more

The Monarch resort is a fine, clean, comfortable place to stay. It's akin to a slightly older but well-maintained Best Western, or a particularly nice Travelodge. However, it annoys me that they advertise wireless but it doesn't work, and the front desk acts like they don't know what's going on. Just fess up, hand me over the ethernet cable, and be done with it. Also, what's with letting kids run up and down the hall between my room and the reception desk at 8:30 in the morning? Why did I have to come out and ask them to ask the parents to get their kids in line, when they could clearly see and hear it? They should have done that on their own initiative. offers awful value for the price (we paid 200 dollars). - 'breakfast room' was actually a small guest room crowded with tables (and people), and supplied with unhealthy, old-looking pastries, boiled eggs (not sure from what kind of animal), cereal and coffee -- if felt more like a chow-line in a refugee camp. - poor attention to detail throughout: clock was one hour off, refrigerator was not working, when we went out to the pool area we were locked out and had get back in via the front lobby entrance. - I liked Erin B's review (below), and will agree with them that the best thing about this place was that no one actively tried to set me on fire. - next time we will spend 100 more a night and get a great room at the monterey plaza... unfortunately, we came last minute and that place (my favorite) was booked up. read more

This place does not deserve any stars. I booked a room using booking.com like i have on many occasions. Most hotels won't pre-authorize your card for the full amount, which this hotel did. I was planning on splitting the room with my partner and figured we would take care of it once we arrived. This isn't unusual. Pre-authorizations are BS especially for a over priced room. You basically end up paying twice for a room and get your funds returned several days after checking out of the hotel. This was a reservation for 1 night!! Once I noticed the pre-authorize transaction on my account I called the front desk and got a very rude gentlemen by the name of Edmund. He would not let me ask any questions and talked over me and said he was done. When I called back to speak with the Manager Roxanne, who was nice but claimed that she couldn't do anything on her end to cancel my reservation and I would be charged $199.99. Mind you, I haven't even stepped foot in the hotel. Clearly they have the authority to cancel my reservation without any further trouble or cost. Booking.com does not hold them to my reservation. I'm sure I am not the first person to decided to cancel my reservation days before checkin. I did feel like Edmund was a good indication of the kind of service and hotel this place had to offer. Why would I want to stay there? Why would you want an already unhappy customer at your hotel? I knew this hotel was over priced but cheap for the area and expected to checkout what Pacific Grove had to offer. Unfortunately I had to cancel plans. Don't stay here. read more

Do not stay here. $200 and the tv did not work. The front desk lady twisted some cords around but had no idea what she was doing, then told us we'd get some kind of reimbursement at checkout. Ended up being only $20 reimbursement. The phone didn't work either and we had issues with the wifi-wouldn't let us connect. Horrible customer service. The location was nice but I definitely will not be back and don't recommend it to anyone. read more

We checked all hotels up and down the street, and there are many in Pacific Grove on this strip, and the Monarch is clearly the best for its price ($90+tx off-season). It seems that the hotel is newly renovated and our room looked brand new. It is run by Best Western and it is really well organized. They have a nice outside pool and hot tub, and there is free WiFi, although you have to run around a bit to get a good signal. The breakfast is fantastic: it is called "continental" but it offers a lot and is a sit-down breakfast with buns, fruit, juices, cereal, and hot drinks, really nice. read more

Very clean, great service. The two people working in the front desk work their butts off, and are very nice. Even though the hotel is older, it has a charm. Its cute, and their is a pool, sauna, and spa. Nice to relax after a nice drive when its cold, and dark outside. read more

At 10pm there was water dripping from the bathroom ceiling all over the floor. We could've slipped and fell. The women at the front desk wasn't concerned and seemed to not want to be bothered. This is a great choice for people on a budget that still want a great room. The rooms are clean and spacious and the beds are incredibly comfortable. This is located in a great spot. Easy to walk almost anywhere! The lady at check-in was very nice and accommodating. She was warm and welcoming, and seemed to genuinely enjoy her job. Our room was great. Fireplace, complimentary waters, nice hot water for showers, refrigerator and microwave, and continental breakfast included in the rate. Once in awhile I like to splurge on a top rate hotel....this is not one of those times. The price is right for being that we only spent time at the hotel to sleep. It needs some remodeling but its tolerable. I could do without the mini fridge that had a wire shelf that was rusty. Roaming the streets of lighthouse ave, came across the Monarch. It looked clean and quite. Walked in was greeting with a very warm welcome. " Welcome to the Monarch, my name is Fred, how can I help you" Not to steal a line Jerry Maquire, But you had me a " Welcome". This inn is an enclosed GREEN HOUSE, inside gardens are way cool and added to my quite stay. Breakfast was good, not over the top. Price was inline with others in the area. Cracked open A Diet Coke and light my fireplace, did step out on the deck and watched the deer outside chomp on some flowers. I will return and hope this helps. read more

This was the most disorganized check in I have ever seen. There were 6 people checking us in over the holiday weekend, they couldn't find my reservation, and then kept helping other people instead of trying to find mine. Took over 30 minutes to check in. The WiFi is laughable, kept saying "can not connect", Were there for two days and our room was never touched. I agree with someone else, to call this a "resort" is not a good use of the word. Jacuzzi was dirty and could use a good cleaning, pool was unheated. The room for breakfast was too small and only had 3 tables, they need to have overflow seating. Also, no one was attending, so food ran out and not replaced. I like the location just not the place. read more

We made reservations through their Web site and the staff seemed to be using a combination of paper and digital reservation data and nobody seemed to have a clear idea what was going on . We stayed at The Monarch resort on 4/1/2013, room 120. Room was clean nothing fancy. The room had two double beds, that were so uncomfortable I did not sleep well. The free WI FI did not work well or at all really lol. The room was overall clean big bathroom and balcony out a sliding door for fresh air. The continental breakfast was not that great, consisted of three kinds of cereal, hard boil eggs, bagels, toast, fruit, and small muffins that where gone real fast. Juice, coffee, tea, milk . The pool looked nice heated to about 80 degrees, but the pool closes at 9 pm .You think they could keep it open a bit later. The hotel was just a couple blocks from Ocean View BL. golf course , and a couple streets away from 17 mile drive and Monarch butterfly sanctuary, we seen many butterflies. And lots of deer all around the golf course so drive slow . But next time we visit the area I'll be staying somewhere else. read more

Pretty good. The bathroom had used soap in it, but the rest seemed clean. The continental breakfast had a good selection but it was so dank, cramped and small, we couldn't stand it. The Monarch Resort was a nice, little hotel. Small pool and spa that was kept clean. The complementary deluxe continental breakfast was good. The breakfast consisted of hard boiled eggs, juices and coffee, cereal options, bagels and muffins, cream cheese and assorted jellies, and fresh fruit. The bad points of the hotel were that the wifi was almost impossible to get onto; this would be a bad hotel for anyone who needs to get on for work. The walls were also very thin, you could hear what was going on in the surrounding rooms. The television could also be updated. We tried to watch a movie while there and the picture and sound continuously kept cutting out. The rooms were a good size and kept clean. This is a good hotel for someone on a budget visiting the area. read more

A lot nicer so far, than what I expected. I expected a much more dated look but the rooms are nice. Not quite modern but definitely better than what I pictured. We ended up with a very large room. It looks very clean and the lady at the desk was polite and helpful :) so far so good. Location is great also since we want to check out the aquarium and are going to the California Roots Festival at the fairgrounds. We stayed at the Monarch Resort on a vacation in 2001. At the time we found it to be OK. Nine years later (Aug 2010) nothing has changed. It feels very 1970's. We found the room to be really kind of ugly and depressing. The room was clean and tidy, but the whole place really needs an upgrade. After checking-in we walked across the street to look at the Olympia. The room we saw at the Olympia was much more contemporary. Easily worth the $30 more than what we paid at the Monarch. To do it all over again, we would call around to see if there are rooms available in the different hotels, but not make a reservation. Once there we would look at the rooms before checking in. The little Pacific Grove Downtown is great. Really quiet and laid back. It's a quick drive to the Monterey Aquarium. read more

Clean hotel near the main street for Pacific Grove restaurants, shops and the golf course. Having said that, the walls and floors are hollow and your nights maybe be spent listening to pounding feet and conversation. The breakfast nook is small for only a hand full of people. I could have lived with that since there are so many nice places to eat down the road. For the nearly $200 a night, better planning in advance could have gotten me a far better stay else where. For a Best Western Hotel, I expected better. They should invest in wall and floor insulation, but with tourist coming and leaving, probably never to return, it probably won't happen. The Monarch Resort in Pacific Grove is easily the best choice to stay in the area. We have been coming to the Monterey Peninsula for years and we will be sure to book our next visit here. The staff has been friendly, helpful, and courteous and we love the fireplace in our room. The rates are fantastic and the location makes it easy to get around anywhere on the peninsula. I've stayed in this hotel many other times and I'm going back tomorrow, Jason helped me booked and he was more then helpful. This is my To-Go place when I have to go to Monterey for any reason. This is a soid 3 star hotel. The property is old but pretty well maintained. The room was large, with a fireplace (one fire log included) witch was neat. Bathroom was large and clean. Shower had plenty of hot water. Lots of parking. No ac, it was cool outside so that didn't matter. Staff was pretty good. Location was close to the beach and downtown Pacific Grove. Breakfast was nothing special but did the job. Bed was a standard cheap mattress and it was squeaky. Solid no frills hotel. I've stayed in much worse. read more

They said there was an issue with the website which caused them to overbook. After driving 5 hours, I had to scramble to find another hotel during labor day weekend. read more

Had to open Criminal case against the owner of the hotel for fabricating financial document! If you check into this hotel most likely you are facing overcharge in your bank account. And that's not all! Service is terrible. They charge your credit card for extra night. After that they don't want to communicate to clarify the case. The owner manipulates credit card sleeps. Refuse to cooperate and don't respond to your messages. I end up calling the police, involving Corporate office and legal organizations.
