I saw this on our very first night and read it with approval just about every time I used the elevator.

I'll start with the not so great things and then tell you all the best things about this place. The beds were VERY FIRM. It made it difficult for one or two of us to really get comfortable and sleep through the night. Also, the room did have a strange smell that I noticed our first two days there and the fridge did buzz quite a bit. Now onto the better things about this place. They had a free breakfast each morning and had tea bags, honey, hot chocolate packets, oatmeal packets and hot water. They also offered cuties or small oranges, bananas, bagels, croissants, muffins, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, along with packages of cream cheese and little butters. They had hot cup sleeves, toppers with the small drink hole, and paper plates, bowls, spoons and knives. They are a NO SMOKING business which I LOVED. I have an incredible sense of smell. I liked the fact that the bathroom was larger than most other places I've stayed and they had tissues and plenty of toilet paper. This place has a water dispenser on the first, main level that you can go to for cool OR hot water. There are cups placed on top too. I found that to be very nice and accommodating. In the room by the sink they have coffee packets and mugs. There is also a fridge and microwave in the room which is helpful and our child really liked a lot. They have fireplaces in the rooms. I don't think I've had a fire in a fireplace since I was a young child, but my husband burned one of the complimentary logs on our second night there and it was really nice. Apparently you get one free log a day, but our kiddo and I didn't get one in time last night. They have a TV in the room that our young one enjoyed. Overall, a pretty decent stay.

This is an older motel down in Pacific Grove. The reason why we stayed here is because my bestie was staying here and we were celebrating her birthday. The room was clean and spacious and they offered a pretty decent continental breakfast.. The floor was vacuumed, but it's that older condensed carpet that made me want to wear socks. We were right next to the area for the breakfast and I was afraid that it would be too noisy, but it wasn't that bad. Beds were okay - no complaints. They have all these indoor garden areas. It's rather... Unique.. It is right by 17 mile drive, and there's a cute little downtown area that I had not explored before so in that way, it was a good location. And it's out of the way of Cannery Row, so once you get past the craziness of Cannery Row, it's just a short drive with less traffic, which is also nice. Overall, it was a decent place to stay, but for $300 a night, we can definitely find something a little bit closer to our style.

Beautiful location! Very nice staff, came here with my mother to just get away for the thanksgiving holiday and staff was very nice, all double bed rooms are on second floor apparently but there are nice elevators, it's a comfortable parking experience where our car feels safe, and there is a inside sauna with pool and hot tub outside. Only reason why it's not a 5/5 is cause the breakfast is a bunch of hardboiled eggs, banana, yogurt cups, some muffins, and bagel with cream cheese out. Nothing really 'prepared' albeit filling ‍.

    Hair in the tub

It's old dirty tub doesn't drain toilets run all night and nobodycares here. There's no maid service. The prices we pay for this was too much for this place and I'll never stay here again. This is what Monterey has to offer for resorts not good.

Our stay was very good. Though it was a quick one but fun. Their room is nice and clean. They have free breakfast. Also they have swimming pool. My girls had so much fun with our quick stay. All in all, I recommend this resort for those visiting the area at Pacific Grove.

This is a picture of our bed. Very worn. This is how it looked before we slept on it.

The bed in our room was extremely tired and needed replacement. Also the carpet in the elevator is very dirty and gives you the impression that perhaps the carpet in the room could be harboring pest. It does not feel clean. There are also ants in the bathroom even though we are on the second floor. We have been coming here for many years and are trying our best to be objective.

Outside the Monarch Hotel. Beautiful place highly recommended

We enjoyed being able to walk everywhere and we loved the historical aspect of the Inn. There is a small parking lot on the property, but we chose to park on the street (it's free) because there was a space right in front of our cottage door. The staff is very friendly. The star was lost because of the poor breakfast. Cold bagels, no butter, tiny, tasteless cold pastries. Sad because the little breakfast room with its cozy seating is very inviting.

It felt like we were inconveniencing her by having the audacity to check into our room. The room was small but that's fine, it's to be expected. Note that the walls are THIN AS CAN BE. I could hear the room next to us flush their toilet. I wish I was joking. The worst part was the shower head. The first day it was spraying a bit to the sides and got the bathroom floor a little wet. The second day all hell broke loose and the entire bathroom was soaked after a 5 minute shower. I had to wipe down the counter, the toilet, and the sink from all the shower water. I've never experienced anything like it. The "continental breakfast" is pathetic. Cold and tiny pastries and blueberry bagels. So expect to eat elsewhere for breakfast. I recommend Winston's around the corner (it's outstanding). The lady at the front desk the day we checked out and that I reported the shower leak to was very hospitable. To be honest, she was the only positive part of this entire experience. I'm just so disappointed in this place. I was really looking forward to our stay but it fell short in every way plus some. I waited and waited, and after several minutes of waiting I dinged the bell. Nothing. I finally called the hotel and let it ring for a while, no one answered or came to the lobby where the phone was ringing to answer. I waited longer and tapped the bell again, so I stood there and continued waiting. A young woman finally came to the desk, she was nice enough throughout our interaction, but didn't apologize for leaving me waiting or even ask how long I'd been standing there. This next part is important to keep in mind if you have mobility issues, I asked for a room without stairs, and she said there weren't any. When I booked, the listing said accessible, it wasn't. She said this hotel were converted condos and they all have stairs. We had to go up to two sets of stairs, between my arthritis and the weight of my bags, getting luggage up to the room was a challenge. During check-in, the front desk clerk also instructed me to park right next to the lobby in the handicap spot. She said "it's okay for you to park there, we just have the handicap sign up because we have to, but nobody ever comes to check it." I informed her that's where I was already parked because I have a handicap placard. But her instructing me to park in the only visible accessible spot not knowing I even had a placard really upset me, those spots need to be reserved for those that require them. We were in room 115, which is right above the lobby where breakfast takes place. You can hear the automatic door opening and closing every single time someone entered or exited the lobby making it impossible to sleep in. The room was super clean, I liked that we had two separate bedrooms, and the wet bar with a microwave and fridge were good too. The room also has no AC, just a heater. We had to open the windows to air the room out and there were no locks at the tops of the windows or sliding door to keep it securely cracked while sleeping, so the room was very stuffy. The bed is also super firm and the pillows are a weird small square shape. We did check-out the breakfast and the area was super clean, but their selection wasn't great. Overall our stay was good, but I probably wouldn't pick this property again when there are better options at a similar price point nearby.

We had breakfast every morning and it was hot, fresh and provided variety each day. We stayed in Room 21, La Porte. It included a private side entrance outside the main house which was great. I think our room location was a little noisier than other rooms due to the entrance area outside the room being used by staff and some other guests. And the decor of the room, Inn and lovely garden, service and daily breakfasts were all amazing. And speaking of the breakfasts, they were plentiful and absolutely delicious. Hotel staff were very friendly and professional. This time we had the oceanfront room with the sofa bed. Beautiful views, of course, from the balcony. The room was clean, however there is an ant problem in the bathroom. It was not too bad, but we still weren't thrilled to see an ant here and there crawling on our things in the bathroom. It is strange that they use cloth shower curtains, so every time you take a shower they get soaked. Some toiletries are provided, but not as many as they used to. They used to give lotion, shower caps, shower gel, etc. Now it's just bar of soap, shampoo and conditioner. The bathroom is nice, though, with double sinks. Sofa bed worked out great for our 8 year old. She said it was comfortable, and we were also comfortable in the king size bed, which had a firm mattress. It can get noisy in the room with the balcony door open due to the seals and seagulls, but closing the door blocks most of the sound. We kept it open in the day and shut it when we went to bed. Breakfast - well, I guess you can't really complain too much when it's complimentary with the room, but it's really nothing to write home about. Hard boiled eggs, fruit plate, yogurt, and some muffins. Me, being a diabetic, I couldn't really eat any of it, except the eggs. Our daughter enjoyed it, though she is pretty easygoing. We had been hoping to save some money by eating breakfast at the hotel but we ended up eating breakfast out every day we were there. Be prepared to do A LOT of walking because this hotel is at the very end of Cannery Row -- although it's great exercise, and gave us a chance to work off all the calories from our meals. lol. The room was nice, we'd probably stay there again. One thing we were disappointed about was the hotel used to offer a discount if you bought aquarium tickets through them. They no longer do that. They also used to offer free bottled water in the room, which they also no longer do.

When we decided to extend our stay by an extra night, our harbor-view room wasn't available for the additional night, but they went out of their way to make it work so we didn't have to switch rooms. We really appreciated that! Parking was also very reasonably priced at $25, especially compared to other hotels in the area. The room itself was spacious, the bed was very comfortable (firm, just how we like it), and the harbor view was absolutely perfect. We were a little concerned after reading reviews about the sea lions being noisy, but we actually loved hearing them from the balcony! Once the balcony door was closed, we couldn't hear them at all, and they never disturbed our sleep. One of our favorite perks was the complimentary binoculars available to guests--they were a fun touch for watching the harbor. And don't miss the sunrise from the fourth-floor rooftop terrace--it's absolutely beautiful! There were just a few minor things that could be improved. The hotel only has one elevator, and it can be quite slow during busy times. We also wish the freshly baked cookies were available throughout the day. They were put out around 3:00 p.m., but they disappeared almost immediately because they were so popular. When we arrived, our room temperature was around 78°F. We called the front desk to ask about the A/C and were told someone would come up. Security arrived and explained that the hotel doesn't have air conditioning, so the options are to use the fan or open the balcony door. It would have been helpful if the front desk had shared that information when we called. We left the screened balcony door open while we were out the next day, and the room cooled down nicely. The only other thing we wished the room had was a microwave. Overall, these were very minor issues compared to everything we loved about our stay. The location, views, comfortable rooms, and outstanding customer service made for a wonderful experience.
