Amazing find! So happy we went a bit off the beaten path because the quality of the food is better than most of the stuff you find in more touristy locations. We did a lot of sampling, as well, and all the poke was incredible. In particular, the octopus was PERFECT--not easy. Even my four year old (who hadn't ever been a fan of octopus before) loved it. We scarfed it down on the way home, and she was crushed when we got home that there wasn't any left! We did do a take away of kalua pork, which was so juicy, she was quickly calmed. All in all, great experience. Very friendly family that runs it who you can tell take great care in their craft and the taste of every plate. Makes the food just that much better!! I saw the pictures and I had to try these famed Stuffed Nori Wrapped Crabcakes...Can you say, "heaven in my mouth?!" Try it, you'll like it! I also had the ahi belly and it was tasty, but it didn't blow me away. The only real downer about this place is that there's not much parking. I don't know anywhere else that can do a piece of Calamari like these guys. Always done perfectly. Never rubbery/leathery. Slap on the Thai Chili sauce and it's party time. My co-workers love the Furikake Salmon. The greens are fantastic, especially with the dressing. But I rarely go that route because the Mac salad is so good. It has a little hard boiled egg in it. Wish I could figure out the spices, but whatever they are, it works. The Banana Cream pie is the perfect closer, though you have to call early. It runs out fast. About an hour + ago I had to go pick up my husband, his coworkers & our food that he'd phone order, which then of course upon entering I had to wait a bit with my 5 month baby which wasn't too bad, but after walking to my car & tryna get everything situated & unforeseen force of strong wind knocked one of the packaged orders I put on my car & spills the 3 plates of food luckily a very nice gentleman saw & helped me, idk if he's the boss or wrkr, he kindly offered to clean up my mess & get me new plates!! I phone ordered food for my coworkers and I today at 11:45am. A lady with choppy English took the order and said it will be ready in 15 min. My coworker goes down at 12:30pm, they said no order was made. No apologies at all from them and just plain rudeness. They need to work on their customer service. When I walked in I was going to give this restaurant 4 stars because there is no seating. It is take out only. I ended up eating it in my car parked outside the establishment. Then I tried the ahi crab stuffed, deep fried dish. It was good except that it was smothered in wasabi. I had to scrape and wipe the wasabi off just to be able to eat it. Great food at reasonable prices! Their Nori-Wrapped Crabmeat Stuffed Ahi Katsu and Garlic Butter Sauteed Tiger Prawns with Zucchini and Mushrooms over Linguine are my favorites. It is mostly a pick-up and to-go kind of place, but if they ever expand or move to a bigger building in which they could have a dining area, it would be awesome. The wife and I went for a quick lunch, no seating only take out, no problem though. I got the Monarch Bento and she got the Crab Stuffed Ahi. Overall it was decent enough, probably more of a 3.5 than a 3, but since Yelp doesn't allow that, I'll go with the 3. The fried poke was basically just fish nuggets, but still good. The mochiko chicken was great too. I tried some of the Crab stuffed Ahi, to me it was a little on the fishy side, so not really my thing. I real finicky when it comes to fish, only mild fish will do for me... in most cases. Dried Aku is the only exception, but that's cause it's good and smokey. read more

I had a bento from these guys, very small piece of crab cake, some mochiko chicken that wasn't that great, and fried poke (if I was poke, I want it uncooked). My friends had the Hawaiian plate, and that wasn't up to expectations. The food would have been enough to give this place a third star, but the prices being so high drops a star. I was just looking for something cheap and different to eat for lunch. I got the crab stuffed ahi and I look forward to trying the ahi katsu. The stuffed ahi was soooo gooood! Omg everything I thought it would be! I also got a qtr lb shoyu ahi poke. No complaints on the poke(it was really good!) but it was not a qtr lb. she gave me significantly less. maybe only 4 pieces of poke. Your service can be understandably frustrating, so I am not bothered by the sassy front cashier lady, she means well and the lines can get long! The fact that you now serve brown rice...YAY!! If you're passing through Kalihi, give this place a try! There is no seating area, so expect to grab and go. Parking can be a little tough, it is only street parking, but I promise you won't be let down. I've read good things about their wrapped crab stuffed ahi, that is definitely next on my list! Also, if you want to ditch rice all together, they give you a heaping serving of nalo greens, YUMM. So with no further ado, stop by or better yet, give them a call a head of time! Co workers went on a food run today, and showed me the menu for this place. Impressive selection of seafood, chicken, plate lunch fare. Prices were very reasonable, and I like the option of brown rice, nalo salad, or mac salad. I had the furikake salmon with all nalo. Yummy! Salmon had a teri glazed sauce and just the right portion. Too bad a "Star" has to be selected in order for a review to be posted. We'd use a negative five Star if it were possible. We did a phone order and the person who TOOK our order definitely needs to learn to be more precise and clear while speaking to customers. This is because, when she took our order, she took the charge card information and made it seem like payment was made and our order was good to go. However, upon attempting to pick up our order, we were told by an elderly, huffy and rude "owner" (we believe it was), that payment was NOT made and our order wasn't even ready. The girl who took our order even told us that anybody would've been able to pick up the order and that it would be ready. That surely wasn't the case. We were going to just forget about our order with them and go somewhere else however, the only hesitation was if Monarch Seafood had already charged us at the time the order was placed via phone call. Coincidently, we heard from acquaintances who also had bad experience with Monarch Seafood and they vowed NEVER to go back there again. The thing is... in this competitive times, restaurants/food industries need to show more respect for patrons versus displaying such poor customer service. They really need to learn to suck it up and be polite to patrons. They cannot be mouthing off and showing hot temperament. Based on our bad experience, they've just lost a contingency of returning potential customers and trust me... the word WILL spread throughout our company because it has already begun. read more

Our office loves this place! I usually have a fish dish such as their Ahi belly or furikake salmon. Both are great. My friends have the prawns...they've had it more than once so it must be a winner. Super Ono as everyone else writes, we go at least once when in Honolulu. This last trip, got some extra Aloha at Monarch. Planned to eat at Monarch but running late. Their menu clearly says close at 2pm, walk in the door at 2:30. I dejectedly mumble, "Guess we missed lunch" but the grandmotherly lady behind the counter offers to cook for us. It is a great place to try the crab stuffed ahi Katsu. The poke is fresh but the line system is really lame. The order system needs to be improved. We order our plate and the cashier takes someone else's payment. Then we are waiting in this cramped up line and the next customer walks in front of us and orders then pays. Then the next guy they knew paid for his poke and when the cashier finally asked what we were waiting for. She puts white rice on my order when I clearly ordered it with brown rice. Then we try to pay for out take out plate. To top it off as I leave and go in my car, I realize she purposely didn't even give me a fork, knife and no napkin! So lame!!! How am I supposed to even eat the take out plate? With my fingers?? They need to better their line system and have a number counter to pick a number and you order and pay when your number is called. Their system is confusing to the workers and the place is so tiny, hardly anyone can fit in for the lunch rush. But the food and poke are extra fresh and delicious! read more

The "must try" dish at Monarch Seafoods is their Ahi Katsu stuffed with Crab. It is dang tasty. Crab wrapped in Ahi, wrapped in Nori and lightly breaded and quick fried. They top it with a wasabi aoli. Also on the menu is grilled salmon and butterfish along with a few other items. The menu is not extensive. Parking is essentially non-existent. I try and act casual and go park in the Bank of Hawaii parking and then "do business" at the ATM and then what the heck since I'm already parked I may as well see what's going on at Monarch Seafoods. I doubt that I'm fooling the security guard all that much though. read more

Bunch of us at work called in a 11 plate order ahead of time and while on the phone the lady who took the order was very RUDE! Short and kept interrupting asking if that was all. It was my first time here and it will probably be my last. The fried ahi poke was neither crispy on the outside nor tender on the inside, rather it was tough and gummy. Tasted like old poke that was fried so it wouldn't go to waste. The mochiko chicken was the worst as it had chunks of fat and inedible pieces, I practically spat out a bunch of them and lost my appetite. The crab cake was subpar and it had too much carrots in it. I want to taste the crab and not fillings. Next time, I'll stick to my gut and head to my favorite bento establishment that doesn't fail when it comes to bento style chicken. read more

Food is great, service is rude. If the phone line is busy don't bother to try to fax your order. The fax machine doesn't work. If you send your order by fax, they won't get it. They didn't seem to care either that I was there to pick up an order I had no clue they never received. Also, you would think if you run out of banana cream pie everyday that you would make more. But no. Even when they pre sell all pieces the day before, they don't make more and they don't care if you don't get it. So unless you actually talk to a live person on the phone and have completely unshakeable positive attitude, don't bother. They aren't gonna help you out. read more
