Came here for a business dinner, which one of my colleagues was lucky enough to snag a reservation for the 5 of us. The front entrance into the bar area was super dark, a bit unnecessarily dark, but once you get to the back of the dining area, it was a bit brighter, but still dim. I ordered a Bourbon Old Fashioned ($27) and ended up getting another one on the house later on as they made an extra, probably for someone that didn't want it. These tasted great, especially after a long day of work. For appetizers, we ordered a spread which included Truffle Monkey Bread, which was just carbs with grated truffle, parmesan cheese, and truffle butter on the side. Nothing too special. The King Crab Rangoon ($30) was probably my favorite appetizer that we ordered, as you can taste the real crab meat and not imitation. We also ordered Fresh East Coast Oysters ($5 each) which were pretty standard. For entree, I ordered the Ribeye Steak Frites ($56) medium rare, which came with french fries. Delicious. It is served with a béarnaise sauce, which I couldn't decide if it tasted better dipping the steak in it or not, and it probably could have went either way. So enjoyed our time here & the vibes are there without a doubt. We had a late dinner reservation but service and the quality of food was excellent. Had a lovely bottle of barbera, the caesar salad, truffle pasta (insane), broccoli & the French dip (a must get). Everything was delicious. We are originally from Chicago so I'm super familiar with Hogsalt, and I'll just add this restaurant to the long list of their banger spots. Convinced they can do no wrong. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. I do think the "hard to get" reservation bit is a little played into, as the restaurant was only half full when we were there yet they were giving crazy wait times. This restaurant has more ambience than flavor. The "famous" burger was served on a dry bun, with not enough flavor to save it from the bun. The pasta was good! I got it gluten free due to an allergy, and it was still good, but nothing spectacular. Maybe I don't like short rib as much as I thought. The sauce was fabulous though. They would benefit from a good gluten free fettuccine. The yuzu cosmo was delicious, but not double strained, which as a bartender, is a big no-no. The food took longer to come out than it deserved. If you want an example of how poorly a restaurant can handle both food safety and customer service, Monkey Bar delivers. My friend and I went in September and had a terrible experience from start to finish. The service was unfriendly and dismissive, and the food made both of us violently sick. We spent the day vomiting with diarrhea. That alone should have been enough for the restaurant to take responsibility. Corporate reached out afterward, apologized, and invited us back. The message read like a comped meal. It was the only thing that made sense. No reasonable person would expect someone to pay to return after becoming that sick from a restaurant. When we arrived, the AGM informed us, with an extremely rude tone, that the meal was not complimentary because the reservation was "hard to get." It was a baffling explanation. The idea that our compensation for being sick and receiving poor service was simply the chance to spend more money made absolutely no sense. When we questioned it, he immediately became confrontational, demanded that we pull up the emails, and acted as if we were trying to get away with something. The hostility was unnecessary and completely unprofessional. He eventually comped the meal but not before creating an uncomfortable and insulting interaction. He stormed off without saying anything else. Aside from this, during the meal, a large unidentified man walked in off the street and began harassing two women at the table next to us. They were frightened and had no idea who he was. Staff took far too long to intervene, which made it clear that the restaurant has serious security issues. The girl kept saying "WHO THE F WAS THAT" until finally the host came by and calmed her down. Between getting sick, dealing with a manager who spoke to us with open hostility, and witnessing a safety incident that should never happen in a supposedly reputable establishment, I cannot recommend this place. Monkey Bar needs major improvement in every area. I will not be returning. read more

Phenomenal service and incredible food at a super vibey classic NYC spot. It's been around since the 1930's and still packs the joint from open until close. Be sure to get a reservation or plan to wait a good minute on their standby list. It's got a dark lounge vibe with an old classic cigar lounge meets Hollywood meets art nouveau feel. We've dined at Monkey Bar many times, and it's always been a favorite. Great food, great energy, and usually a smooth experience. Unfortunately, this visit fell short due to how the seating was handled. We arrived early and put our name down at 5:41 PM. As expected for a high-demand spot like this, the hostess wasn't particularly warm, but she took our information. We were a party of four and, like many regulars know, there is a small table near the front of the bar area that is really not suitable for four people--it's tight, loud, and difficult to have a conversation. We specifically wanted to avoid that table. At 6:31 PM, we were texted that our table was ready This was a reasonable wait. When we returned, we were brought to exactly the table we had hoped to avoid. We politely declined and told the hostess we'd wait for a booth instead, even letting her know we'd grab a drink across the street and asked to be texted when something else opened up. About 30 minutes later, we got the text and quickly wrapped up (including a $70 bar tab) and rushed back. Only to be brought to the exact same undesirable table again. That was frustrating. We had been clear about not wanting that specific table, not requesting anything unreasonable or overly specific. When we asked to speak to a manager, we were told they couldn't guarantee a specific table. I understand that a specific table cannot be guaranteed. But that wasn't the issue. We weren't asking for a particular table, just to avoid one known problematic table. It was also clear that the table had remained empty the entire time, making the situation even more puzzling. The hostess was not helpful and lacked the basic communication and service awareness you'd expect at a restaurant of this caliber. The manager was more professional, but it didn't seem like our initial request had been properly communicated or understood. That said, once we were seated, the experience improved significantly. The food was excellent, as always. And our server, Kate, was outstanding. She was attentive, warm, and professional. She's a standout and clearly an asset to the restaurant. The owners are lucky to have her. We'll definitely be back because the food and service (once seated) are worth it. Staff were very nice and efficient and plenty of coverage. The truffle bread was just an explosion of flavor with great textures of gooeyness, creamy, soft and flaky, though pricey and the truffle is ample. The Wagyu burger was very good but felt in this case the egg and bacon competed with the burger's flavors, though it was juicy, tender and bun well made. The lemon meringue pie and the carrot cake were both really good and definitely the highlight of the meal. The chocolate cream pie tasted like fudge more than a cream pie, and was also pretty good. We actually waked in ant 5:30 on a Monday and were able to be seated immediately for a table of 2. Espresso martini was the best I've ever had and a strong pour. Worth the hype. Reservations are next to impossible for a reasonable time. I managed to snag one for 5:15pm on a Monday by sheer luck. The vibe is truly old New York. Dim lighting, rat pack music playing, white tablecloths and beautiful art. This is a remnant of a bygone era that should have never left. Our servers were Taylor and Ash and they were so attentive! Food and Drinks we had: - Vesper Martini - Bourbon old fashioned - Butter lettuce salad - Vodka rigatoni - Banana split I can say with certainty that I loved everything I had here. I'd love to try the monkey bread next time but this time we were much too full. I do want to mention the bathroom situation as it is not ideal. The bathroom is located up a flight of stairs through the hotel lobby. I do not think there are accessible bathrooms available, but a portion of the restaurant itself is accessible. It was almost impossible to snag a reservation for dinner, so I decided to check out the famed Monkey Bar for brunch. First off, the VIBES-- I'm in love! Even though we visited Monkey Bar for lunch, the vibes were still immaculate. Perfect for date night or for a special occasion! The tables were situated a bit too close to each other though so it was really hard to move / noise levels were pretty high. Second, our waiter was amazing-- super friendly! Some of the best service I've had in the city so far. Third, the food was fantastic! - Caesar salad: 100/10 (easily THE best Caesar salad I've had in a looong time. Almost beats my fav salad of all time-- the Lou Malnati salad in Chicago. Old school New York in every way. The jazz music being played throughout the dining room makes you feel like you're back in the day. We were able to secure a reservation via email and were seated only a few minutes after our scheduled time. Everyone from the hostess, waiter and other team members were fantastic. The meal started out with the amazing monkey truffle bread. It's soft, salted, sweet and throw in the truffles for a great beginning to your meal. I looked around and practically every table had some monkey bread on their tables, that's how good it is. The wedge salad was average and my wife's filet was over cooked. She regretted not saying something. The prime rib sandwich is very good, the shaved prime rib is very tender. I would recommend the sandwich. To finish the night off we split the chocolate cream pie. Wow, it is rich and the whipped cream on top is nice and light. The pie is a must have but we couldn't finish it. Monkey bar is one of NYC's hyped up spots, and after seeing all the truffle on their menu, it was my goal to get a reservation here. Out of everywhere we were going on our trip to New York, Monkey Bar was at the top of my list. I love the atmosphere here, the ambiance gives old school New York. The monkeys everywhere, even as lamps, were really cute too. The food was good but maybe a bit overhyped. We loved the truffle monkey bread, RigaToni alla vodka, and the burger, but I can't say anything was super special. I was pretty surprised by this. Finally checked Monkey Bar off my Resy list last Friday, Dec. 27. Originally planned for my birthday last October, I had a couple of international work travels that conflicted with the challenge of getting a table here. Was really looking forward to a nice year-ender date here. As a Resy Global Dining Access member, I didn't feel the benefits at all despite my request for a nicer booth table for the occassion. It took almost 30 mins to be seated despite our reservation and the table assignment wasn't really thoughtful, so I guess they either don't read email requests or how you specify it on Resy. I will say that the ambiance is on point and most of the food was good. As for the food, everyone recommended the King Crab rangoon but honestly it tasted flat and all cream cheese. I was surprised they even called it King Crab. I've had much better at simpler Thai restos. This was a letdown for us. The thick maple bacon was good on the other hand. For our entrees, my husband had the Double Cheeseburger which was better than Au Cheval and we enjoyed the fries that we ordered separately, the garlic aioli dip that went with it was good. I enjoyed the Lobster Spaghetti. Simple yet delicious. At $75, it could be more generous in terms of portion. Enjoyed our drinks, love that they carry Avinyo Cava and I had 2 glasses while my husband enjoyed his Chianti. We strategically skipped dessert because we had a whole burnt basque cheesecake from Little Grace waiting for us at home and also wished they had more offerings. Savannah attended to us and while she was nice, we didn't get a 'See you again soon' like the couple next to us because I guess we're not white people and presumed not living in the same city. I don't even know where to begin. The minute you walk in, you feel the exclusivity. The ambiance was a 10/10 - your heartbeat literally changes as it matches the aura. It's intoxicating. We got a round of drinks, the bread, and pancakes to start. I was so surprised by how big the portions were. For our mains, we ordered the rigatoni, the French dip sandwich, and someone got the truffle mac and cheese (which is technically a side) but was definitely enough for one. The service was a bit disappointing during our visit. After sending back the first round of hamburgers, we tried the replacements, but even then, we felt the experience was stronger at their sister restaurant, Au Cheval. If you're looking specifically for a great burger, I'd recommend heading there instead. Our food took quite a while to arrive, and we returned the first burgers because the buns seemed stale or over toasted, they were hard and crumbly. When we mentioned this to our server, the manager came over to discuss it, which felt a little uncomfortable, and took away the fries we were eating seemed a bit much. To their credit, they did replace the burgers, though not in the most welcoming way. On the positive side, the whitefish salad, crab rangoons, and crab cakes were all excellent, and we really enjoyed our drinks. The ambiance and design of the space are also very cool, it definitely has a great vibe. This has always been a favorite spot for our friend, so it was a little disappointing that the experience fell short this time.
