This place is quite a find. The interior is large enough that you can engage in conversation and still enjoy some privacy if you want with various seating options. The staff are friendly and engaging which adds to the allure of the place. I recently introduced a friend to this place and she loved it. I had the spicy monkey mocha which is smooth and bold. I always get a decaf iced Americano, because I'm lame and like the flavor but not the caffeine and it should be very simple to make. Even without a line, it generally takes over 5 minutes to make, which is odd, because it generally only takes about 90 second to whip up anywhere else. Sure, they may make it "with love," but I dont care about the warm feelings when I just want my coffee. My muffins that I get there are also almost always stale, like their refrigeration case has the power to instantly stale fresh muffins or something... It's really odd. Monkey Nest will be my new go-to coffee shop in Brentwood. I live right around the corner from Thunderbird, however I feel that Monkey Nest has so much more going for it than Thunderbird and here's why... - Monkey Nest is very spacious and although busy, has plenty of room. Tbird has reduced the amount of seating inside for their coffee bar and it is often difficult to find a table. - MN has nice comfortable furniture, I was impressed by the tables and chairs that give it a nice homey vibe. Tbird's furniture is old and uncomfortable (especially when you're sitting on IKEA wooden chairs for multiple hours working). - MN's tables and restrooms are clean. It seems like Tbird staff never clean the tables, as they're always dirty with coffee spills, crumbs, and dirty dishes. - MN's staff is super friendly, attentive, and do their jobs. Tbird staff members act so aloof and make it seem like they're doing you a favor by getting your coffee, or that you're interfering with their time by ordering something. I've slowly stopped going to Thunderbird over the years because of these things. Yeah, the coffee might be a little better than Monkey Nest (I've only tried MN's regular coffee so far). Monkey Nest could offer more breakfast food options (hence the 4 stars), but their new so hopefully their menu will expand. I paid $3 for a "large" iced coffee with vanilla that was mostly ice in what seemed to be maybe a 12 oz cup. It tasted nothing like vanilla and a lot like burnt. Hey! This place is really showing itself to be here for the long haul. They are still working out some kinks, but from my experiences thus far, they are just getting better and better. The main thing that I dig is their willingness to listen to customers and take suggestions. They will really aim to give you a drink and/or experience just as you like it, and the more specific you are, I've noticed, the better. That is fine with me. The best of the best for coffee --relaxing in a atmosphere of sophistication. When you arrive in the door there will be students all over drinking coffee with their smart devices and staying there for hours. Myself I found my experience at Monkey Neat Coffee shop to be delightful and just about everything I look for in a full of students coffee shop experience. The lavender latte I ordered was on point with a very friendly dude in the register. I will say that lavender seems to be polarizing just like beets - people either love it or hate it. I grew up in this neighborhood, my great grandpappy actually built a house with his own two hands off of McCandless a few streets down (*weeps as recalls grandmother selling it for a measly $150k 15 years ago*). Since it brings back nostalgia, I decided here to be the place of my studying venture yesterday. I parked my behind on a couch near the door and threw my book bag on the coffee table in front of me. My studying companion had an iced coffee and a chocolate chunk cookie. The cookie looked moist and chewy as she pulled it apart, and she told me her iced coffee was quite good. For 4 hours we studied accounting (shoot me now, please) and no one bothered us. The place was quite packed for it being a Sunday afternoon, and the parking lot was a bit full, but I dug the atmosphere. This building used to be a liquor store, yes, I lived here THAT long ago, but Monkey Nest seemed to update the place with exposed brick, a rounded wall creating a room tucked away in a corner for "large group" studying, and many large tables, couches, and recliners for all your studying leisure. I drank nor ate anything from the shop, so that's why all I'm rating is the ambiance at the moment, but I'll certainly be back--and if someone tells you they'll go back somewhere JUST because of the ambiance, then don't you think it must be something special?! read more

I am very delighted that Monkey's Nest opened close to my Brentwood neighborhood. As other coffee shops near my home have driven my expectations very low (crowded, slightly dirty, bad food choices), all I've hoped for in the past was a decent cup of coffee. Not only did I receive excellent coffee (they have soy milk!!! :-), I also received the best sandwich on the planet earth, The Monkey's Nest Special. My words could never do this sandwich justice. Keeping these guys at a five star rating. I love the atmosphere and the top quality of service the opening lady provides. She is always smiling (even when there's a long line) and pleasant. She is the type of person you just want to hug! Hey boss man, give her a raise! It's because of her getting me addicted to the red eyes that I come here. The breakfast tacos are pretty darn tasty and I like that they offer vegan and gluten free ( is that under the vegan category?) and free range eggs. We were in the area and Googled "coffee" and found this spot. The latte flavors sounded delicious, but the 'Chocolate Chimp' and 'Nutty Irishman' left so very little to be desired. They tasted like plain lattes, and not very good plain lattes. Five bucks for a flavored latte that doesn't have a flavor... I worked for several hours, and it seemed like the majority of the people in the back rooms were holding small business meetings, studying, or working alone. It looked like the room we were in could be reserved to hold a small (12-15 person) closed door meeting, and there was a large screen on the wall with computer plug-ins. read more

My favorite coffee shop in Austin. I recently relocated back to the area from California and needed to do some work so I tried 8 coffee shops in 4 days. The area is saturated with them, which I enjoy though, but this place stood out from the rest. The staff is great and welcoming, which is a breath of fresh air compared to the snooty atmosphere at other coffee shops around town (i.e. i get it i can't identify the trendy overpriced drink you just served me). Sometimes I feel like certain shops give you the evil eye for staying for hours on end, but here there's plenty of room, good crowds, adequate parking, and enough room that your stay isn't frowned upon. I'll be coming back on the regular even though I live in south Austin. I loved this place. It was my go to spot for casual loveliness. Suggested this place to a new friend. I was running late. (I was planning on starting with the Peace Hummus Salad, delicious)! Turbulence struck! I brought my new friend something for later. It was in a sealed package, I asked him to put it away, save it for later, he did just that. Without a minute to spare, the owner (in a suit), accosted us and in a threatening tone snapped at me regarding health codes and legal troubles he can have for my bringing in my own food. My new friend carries a water bottle and that was also under suspect. The anxiety this small minded man attempted to level on me was that of an amateur who I thought, must come from a place of anger and scarcity, YUCK! What should have been an easy sales inquiry became a dishonest tall tale that would have embarrassed even Paul Bunyan. The owner wanted me to believe that he could get fined/shut down if I brought in a sealed package of some food item as a gift, my "own food" and got sick from it in his establishment. I returned to the Monkey Nest the next day to speak with the manager on duty. He was professional and kind to me, he said that he had seen the entire situation unfold. When he asked me to give him time to address how customers are welcomed, etc., and to please come back. I told him that if the place was owned by someone on the staff, perhaps. I would consider it. However, since it's a suit who owns the business and is void of professional yet basic people skills, I would be sure to never give him another dime. Namaste read more

Great place to study. The dozen or so times I've been here I've always found a parking spot, a spacious table, and reliable internet for basic tasks. The varied food and drink menu keeps the stomach entertained. Never had to work for too long, but the one time I pulled a four-hour study session there was no pressure from the management to leave. Noise level is manageable: not library quiet, but conversations are conducted at a respectable volume. No loud or obnoxious music. For serious studying, they have a cavelike room that blocks light and suspends time. The only criticism I have of this place is the disappearance of a charming photograph (I think it was of a smiling chimpanzee? maybe two smiling chimpanzees in a fraternal embrace?) that used to hang over the urinal wall in the men's restroom. I loved that photo, and its disappearance is a mystery and profound tragedy. read more

Located on an odd stretch of storage units, random eateries, and thrift stores, Monkey Nest sits as a great joint to sit down in and get some work done. Seating is somewhat limited, but once you do find a place to plop your tail down on, there is plenty of space to sprawl out. The sleek interior does not give you that "hip" feel that many Austin coffee shops typically do, but it certainly offers a more refined feel, sort of like a local Starbucks, if you will. Many of the goods are produced in-house, if not locally. Additionally, they make some pretty tasty drinks, and pour a good cup of joe. Come hither, and actually park your car for once. I'm not monkeying around--this coffee place is my go to place for coffee and getting work done. (Thanks for making my Starbucks withdrawal so much easier--Does this make me a true Austinite?) Quality of food/drinks: Their drinks and coffee have been great each time I've visited them. Their flatbread pizza stands out to me--they make it once you order it so you know it's fresh and for the price, it's a pretty good deal. As for coffee, you can't go wrong in ordering anything from their menu. I personally love their Spicy Monkeys and lattes. Population: A wide mix of people--I've predominately seen college/graduate students come here but families and working professionals frequent this place as well. I dig it. When to visit: As with any coffee place, mornings during rush hour is the busiest time as well as lunch time. It's a safe bet that anytime after 1 pm is a good time to come make a visit. Parking: There's always a spot here to park unlike other coffee shops in town where you may have to do street parking (you know which one's I'm talking about--Flightpath, Medici, Thunderbird, and Houndstooth to name a few). This is a big plus in my books. What I like about this place: I find the staff and clean/bright environment a good place to stay here for a long period of time. My favorite place to study! I used to come here fairly often, and still do whenever my schedule allows. They have plenty of tables and outlets for people looking to get work done. Friendly, helpful staff, you can tell that they care about their customers. It's best to come during the morning when they're not too busy, in the evenings it fills up with students. I'm a big fan of Monkeys Nest for many reasons. It's in my neighborhood. They have great coffee and specialty drinks like a spicy money mocha and espresso milk shakes. I like the breakfast tacos and the sandwiches. The people are friendly. There is a variety of seating. Some comfy couches and big chairs in the back. Tables with good light in the front. Plugs for laptops etc. It can seem a little crowded at times but I've always found a seat. There is occasional live music and I will check that out one day. read more

I visit coffee shops quite a bit around town because I work from home and need to step out on occasion for some social interaction. A friend told me about the Monkey Nest on Burnet Road in Austin. The place is great: Clean, freshly designed, plenty of seating and parking, and damn good coffee/food. The restrooms are clean too. In addition, the Internet signal strength and speed is superb. It is always active with high strength to the point that I never have issues of drop-outs or low bandwidth when it is busy. They have a back room where you can reserve and fit about 15 people. There is a small deck out front that includes umbrellas to shade the sun. The only down side that comes to mind is the service is S-L-O-W even when there isn't a line. That's a buzz kill when you're in a rush. The staff is very friendly. If you like it spicy, try the Monkey Spicy Mocha. Made with cinnamon and cayenne peppers. It rocks! read more

Maybe 12 oz to go cup. MAYBE. And they only filled it to 3/4. I asked "Is this the LARGE Chai Latte?" "Yes" So quantity is about 2/3s of what you would expect for the price and description. Atmosphere: Came here for a weekly 4 hour work date from 8am-12pm. Love the crowd. Not your regular hipster joint. Patrons aren't too loud. Dig the groovy tunes. Work Amenities: Internet seems ok. Outlets are about 1 outlet per three tables. Not crowded... yet. (9am) I would come here again, but I would make sure they put my drink in a "for here" cup. Monkeynest has good coffee and a good staff, but they desperately need to work on their atmosphere. The interior is intensely stimulating: there is a sign on literally every single surface, which is a bit overwhelming. Coffee shops that have a sleeker and cleaner aesthetic tend to be more attractive to me. I do appreciate the quiet room in the back. The problem with Monkeynest is that the neighborhood wasn't in need of another coffee shop. Pacha, Epoch, and Thunderbird have got us covered. read more

This is my go-to coffee joint. I've found that a lot of coffee shops can be real downers. What with all the whispering hipsters, stressed out students and "home office" types, finding a coffee shop that isn't depressing is a chore. Monkey Nest FTW! I was definitely one of those stressed out students - while writing my grad thesis I was at Monkey Nest at least twice a week trying to get some writing done. The ambiance is nice with ample seating of all sorts and big windows. There's also a private room in the back for large study groups or the occasional Magic the Gathering party. The only problem is outlets. A coffee shop can never have enough and my old laptop usually wouldn't last more than a couple hours without a plugin, which in thesis writing is like 2 pages tops. It's a constant battle to find one in there. The food is ok in general but great for a coffee shop. I usually went for a skim latte (beautiful...foam...work?) and a spinach panini. I think I've tried every dessert and was impressed with none of them though - if you need something sweet, just get a sweet drink. Despite some of its pitfalls (desserts, outlets), the lattes and general cheeriness of Monkey Nest have me forever indebted to them. I even thanked them in my thesis. read more

The barista today couldn't care less about my experience or drink today. First it was about 200 degrees (almost burned my tongue off) so she remade it (a hemp milk latte) and without asking out ICE IN IT. When I told her I didn't want ice in it she said I could fish them out. I did that and the drink was a little cold now. I told her I may as well have an iced latte now so she remade it as an ice latte. She also informed me they don't use thermometers (maybe they should, or she should) because her cold ass heart needs some calibrating. After a month or so of driving by... and finally seeing a deal on LivingSocial for Monkey Nest... I dragged my happy little family to this coffee shop that if you drive by too fast, you'll have to do a u-ey. It looked pretty small from the outside, but once you step foot inside, it gets much more bigger. Lots of room to find a table and get your wi-fi on. They even have a nice little sitting area to chat. Once we ordered our drinks, we headed over to the sitting area, where upon sitting discovered some games (i.e. chess, checkers, Barrel of Monkeys). Kiddo immediately took to Barrel of Monkey which we must've played for half an hour. The drinks were pretty tasty. I always go for mocha, and was bit dismayed when I only noticed the spicy mocha. Because I'm not really a "spicy" fan (thank my parents for traumatizing me when I was 4). But decided to be adventurous and went for it. To my amazement, it wasn't TOO spicy, but spicy enough to give you that eclectic kick. I actually enjoyed it. I also ordered a cheese danish, which wasn't that great. It may have been sitting out for too long. Eh, you win some you lose some. As we were waiting for our drinks, we noticed that they serve Teo Gelato! What a gem! I live pretty close to this coffee shop and had friends who studied here during college. I was craving a relaxing, inexpensive sandwich-cafe-type-place for lunch one Sunday and decided to give it a try. They have a great selection of artisan sandwiches and, of course, a variety of coffee and tea drinks. Big cozy chairs, a fire place, tons of room and wifi; this is an ideal place for eating, studying, spectating or chatting. I ordered the Monkey Nest Special: baked chicken breast seasoned with what tasted like curry powder and basil, topped with tomato, red onions, capers and cranberries. Dressed with a pomegranate honey-mustard sauce. Oh it was divine. The ingredients complimented each other so nicely. And it was served on a soft wheat hoagie with oats and seeds. It also comes with homemade chips and salsa. Pretty small portion, but that sandwich was good enough by itself. My significant other would probably give this place a 2-3 food-wise. He ordered the Spicy Roast Beef Sandwich and was most disappointed that it wasn't spicy at all. It's supposed to be served with a sriracha-horseradish mayo, which should be spicy given the first two ingredients. I guess they added too much mayo because it was pretty dull.
