I was pretty excited when I heard that a new coffeeshop was opening in North Austin. With only a few exceptions, the coffeeshops in the area are either local and tiny, or large and corporate. Monkey Nest lands perfectly in the middle: it's large but nor cramped, funky but comfortable, and all of the staff is incredibly friendly. Most importantly - for me anyway - is the coffee, and it did not let me down. : ) Yum! I also had a delicious vegetarian sandwich. However, the thing that really sucked me in about this place was the crowd. Very few places in Austin have such a wonderful, diverse crowd. It really makes the place feel like family. read more

I went to Monkey Nest today to check out one of my local coffee shops. I ordered an iced vanilla latte and the tuna & provolone melt on wheat bread. The latte was mediocre. The sandwich was quite possibly the worst I have ever had. The so called wheat bread was spongy, tasteless, and clearly processed. The tuna and cheese were all in all fine but the dressing used on the sandwich was thin, milky, and left a bad taste in my mouth. To top it all off, I spent over $10 for a so-so coffee and a craptastic sandwich. I was hoping to make Monkey Nest my weekly hangout, but I've reconsidered. read more

Today I ordered the special Salted Caramel Latte and it was probably the most delicious coffee drink I have ordered in a long time. The service is relatively quick and the whole place has a really cozy, fun feel to it without making you want to fall asleep at the coffee shop. I highly recommend for coffee in North Austin. Opening 24/7, 7 days a week, Monkey Nest has got to be one of my favorite go to study spots for those late night cram sessions! Say goodbye to your local version of the Perry Casteñanda Library and hello to good vibes, roasty toasty smells, and ambient lighting. Coffee + Thai Tea are great, but I would not recommend any of the pastries. They taste fake and boxy and old. But you'll go bananas (heh) for the sandwiches! They are pretty good! But one time I ordered a drink w a monkey in it that looked pretty on the menu and when they brought it out it looked all scribally haha! Saturday nights are sorta loud though for studying because some groovy local bands come out to play! And music choice vary! From folky tunes to grandma swingy jazz (the grandmas were so cute btw LOL)! Btw they would really appreciate it if you be a good audience and clap/snap! So far, so good. The coffee is tasty and the prices are an par with other local coffee shops. The staff is friendly and helpful. I appreciate that they offer made-to-order paninis and not the ubiquitous prepackaged sandwiches found at almost every other place in town. BRING A JACKET: My only complaint is the temperature (of the building, not the coffee) Toward the back gets super cold. I presume they run the A/C colder to counterbalance the two entrances toward the front where it tends to be a bit warm. I don't think there is much that can be done about this. The upside is that there is probably a perfectly temperatured table for everyone somewhere in the building. The trick is in finding it. read more

Love this cozy place tucked away on funky Burnet Road. I'm a big fan of Burnet Road and hope it never becomes commercial in the way of malls or downtown chic. The road has an understated thrift store chic sort of. Monkey Nest sort of breaks that stereotype and is a bit more upscale. Their lunches are excellent, sandwiches great. Coffee is to die for, mocha is my favorite. They also have live music which I'll be going to for the first time in a few weeks. Can't wait. read more

Ok so I have been visiting this place since the firs day they opened. The coffee is good the service is solid and the environment is great. BUT the breakfast tacos they are making ARE AWFUL: the tortillas this morning were so stale they were hard to chew and the bacon was crazy bad. It was thin as bible paper and burnt to a cinder, and even though it was burned it was damp and limp and a wet sock. Perhaps they are buying some precooked stuff but I cannot be sure. Either way the tacos are NO WHERE NEAR AS GOOD as the ones they were buying from Elsei's. The Elsei's sells hundreds of tacos each morning for a reason: they are fresh, and made with quality ingredients. If you doubt check out the bacon inside and Elsei's taco sometime. I like this place alot but they have a thing or two to learn about breakfast tacos in Texas. read more

Came in here to work for few hours and it was great! The smoothie was delicious, friendly people, plenty of outlets, and relaxed atmosphere.

They are trying to do too many things here for a coffee bar. Juice bar, coffee, food, and all sorts of other drinks. The real issue is they need to either have more hands at the front or do not have smoothies made here at all. Smoothies take a lonngggg time and if you are waiting for your quick tea or other drink it's really annoying. read more

Only been here once, but I'll definitely be coming back. The place was small and pretty quiet when I went in. The barista was SUPER friendly, and really helpful and patient when I asked for recommendations on what to order. I ended up getting an iced latte - it was called the something-Irishman, I think the Nutty Irishman or something like that. Irish cream and hazelnut, two of my favorite flavors. It was excellent. I just got it to go, but it seems like a great place to study. Next time I'll try the sandwiches, which all look tasty. Four stars for sure, I might bump it up to five if the food is good. read more

My friend and I walked into Monkey Nest Coffee Shop on Burnet/North Loop and stood in line to make an order. My friend asked the cashier for a pastry and a coffee. The cashier rung up the order while staring me down with very angry looking facial expression. When my friend handed money to the cashier, he took it, then immediately handed it back, and aggressively exclaimed "Actually, I am NOT going to take your order, and you two need to get the *expletive* out of my store right now before I call the police!". Upon hearing this, I replied "Excuse me? Why would you call the police on me? What the *expletive* did I do to you?". He then stated "We have camera footage of you and your friend over here vandalizing our property, so you need to leave right now. I am calling the police." He proceeded to pick up the store phone and acted like he was calling the police. I then said "Sir, why are you threatening to call the police on me? So I'm committing a crime, right? How dare I make a purchase at your coffee shop! I should be locked away in prison and they should throw away the key! As a matter of fact, they should probably give me the death penalty as well! I'll make sure to request food from your joke of a coffee shop as my last meal before they execute me." As my friend and I walked out the front door of Monkey Nest, the cashier followed us outside. I said to him "Sir, please stop following us or I will call the police on you." His response was, "I am calling the police on you, because you disrespected my store." I said "Sir, you are obviously confusing me with someone else. Also, you do realize that not only did you just lose two paying customers, but you also just shouted very loudly and caused a scene in front of a large number of customers.", in which he replied "I do not consider you a customer, you are a pathetic scumbag piece of shit." The back and forth arguing continued for a few moments, then a female customer pulled up in her car and was about to walk in the front door. The cashier very obnoxiously said "Ma'am, for your safety, please use the other door." This man appeared to be terrified of me for some reason, and the whole situation was very odd because I never did anything to his business and am still not sure what he thinks I did. I havent tried their food yet, but the atmosphere is really great. Music volume is usually just right for studying or doing work. But sometimes you get the loud baristas and other times you get the awesome ones. The brown sugar latte is great and the irish cream latte ("nutty irishman") is good too. Again, I've never tried the food, but maybe I'll change that one day. So far ambiance + coffee = good enough for me :) read more
