The papaya salad lao style with the crab is so good! We were warned about the taste by the server which was super sweet of her but we love the taste of the crab, fish sauce and all the strong delicious flavors! Lunch 2/27/22 Our first time checking out Alameda, and we stumbled on Monkey Thai. My husband said he wasn't expecting much, but we were both blown away by their food! We started with drinks. I had every intention of getting a thai iced coffee, but the giddy sorority girl in me saw the Malibu Bay Breeze and just had to have it. My husband got the dark and stormy. This place is delicious! I came here after a flight on a Monday night after 9PM. It was one of the few restaurants that was open until midnight and I was craving soup. They had happy hour too and me and my boyfriend ordered $4 Singha beers. We ordered the Tom yum soup with chicken as spicy, and the papaya salad as medium spicy. We also order the crispy porker belly and pork belly basil both was fire dishes definitely would recommend all 3. Monkey Thai is in the South Shore Center Plaza and is located in between the Starbucks and Daiso. There is plenty of parking in the shared lot and it's not too crowded. They have a well lit and cute outdoor seating area and indoor seating available too. The staff are wearing masks and they have call buttons at every table. The menu is pretty extensive with curries, noodles, noodle soups, soup, and signature thai dishes. They also have a drink menu with wine, beers, and cocktails. My bestie and I came to Monkey Thai after seeing their advertised everyday Happy Hour. We arrived at around 9:00 PM on a Friday night and there were a decent amount of people seated both inside and out. We ordered a dozen oysters, the Calamari, 2 Chicken Pad Thais, the Frosty Margarita, and the Frosty Monkey Paradise. Everything came out with 10 minutes or so. The calamari was first to come out and was lightly battered and fried without being greasy. We asked for some lemon to squeeze on top as well. The oysters were next and they were just ok, they were quite briny and inconsistent in size. The Pad Thai came in a huge portion but disappointed me. It was overly saucy and the noodles were cooked too long. There was a good amount of chicken and tofu but there wasn't enough egg or crushed peanuts for my taste. I kept having to drink water in between bites because there was just too much of the sauce. Even when I squeezed some lime, it didn't help as much. The Frosty Margarita was a bit thick at first but after melting a bit was great (but it is on the stronger side). The Frosty Monkey Paradise was sweet and you couldn't really taste the alcohol. You were definitely able to taste more of the fruits in it. The service was just ok as well. They didn't really come check on us unless we pressed the call button, and even then we had to press on the call button a few times before someone came to help us. I really wanted to like this place but unfortunately it fell short. The happy hour is a good deal with $1 Oysters, 2 for $14 appetizers, and HH beers and cocktails. I chose the Thai iced tea. Loved it being sweet and very cold. It was served in a mason jar with a straw. Our server was very friendly and interactive. She gave us a very comforting presence. I had higher hopes for this place given the ratings but ultimately the dishes here fell flat in flavor and in some cases texture. Pad Thai with duck - the noodles were overwhelmingly saucy and far too sweet. It almost tasted like they were tossed in bbq sauce. Barely any egg which I always love. The duck meat itself tasted fine, like Chinese bbq duck. Lao- style papaya salad with crab - I'll be honest, when I saw this on the menu I expected it to have fresh crab meat which sounded amazing. Turns out there were literally chopped up crab shells and joints in the salad (claws, too). It was very crunchy, which I wouldn't have minded if the smell of the crabs wasn't so overwhelming. The shells added a really strong metallic scent (think: pennies) that didn't smell particularly fresh and I just couldn't keep eating. Spice level medium is quite spicy for me so I'd definitely be cautious and order mild or no spice if you're sensitive. Chicken Larb - flavor wise, this was ok. The spice isn't super apparent but builds over time. The chicken texture itself was a little off for me, minced chicken with a sort of pasty layer around it. Bit hard to eat piled up on the lettuce. Yelp check in gets you a free drink. I tried the nom yen out of curiosity and it was a bright pink milk drink that tasted pretty much like banana milk. Good to wash down the spice of the meal. Lets get into it. The food is amazing! My favorites are their pineapple fried rice (I get with chicken or tofu) and their spicy pork basil (you can get vegetarian too with tofu amazing!). Their curries are really good! Their chicken wings are a show stopper you have to get those! I recently tried their spring rolls and and I really enjoyed them. My husband has tried mainly their curries and stews and he loves this place as much as I do. We have always received great service each time we come here. They know their menu well and will make sure to check dietary restrictions and tell you spice level etc. The place is not a fancy restaurant but its comfortable. They have booths and tables, it gets pretty busy at night and when its warm you can sit outside which is really great. Great for friends and family. As time passed and new staff arrived, the food's flavor and quality deteriorated along with the customer service. I was charged a gratuity on two different occasions for a group of three adults and two children (under two). I didn't realize the charge until I got home. I called both times - the first occasion, they apologized, the second, they apologized but since the manager wasn't present so I was asked to call back which I didn't bother doing. They did not offer any solution! During my most recent visit, I requested a high chair when we were seated. Ten minutes went by.. still no high chair, so I got up and asked if I could get it myself. We're about 20 minutes in now, we haven't received any water as of yet. The waitress finally arrived to take our order, we asked for water (even though it's provided when customers are seated). Please take into account that it's not busy. Ten more minutes without water.. I had to wave down the waitress, who apologized, and a young girl, no more than 8 years old, gave us cups and water. There was lipstick on one of the cups. Horrible! As our dinner was being served, I informed the server and all he did was laugh and return with another. There should be an option for spice level as it would make a days and night difference in the flavor if it was a bit spicy. Update: Most of the staff is great but there is one guy near the bar, extremely rude. I requested a dried slice of orange that costs like 5 cents while waiting for the bill to clear the pallet.
