About three weeks ago a large tree limb fell about 50 feet at two in the morning and just missed taking out a door and windows. That's the third limb this winter. It was time to get help. Matt (with Monkeyman's) stopped by and explained how his crew would shorten more than a dozen limbs that were too long and remove debris from the trees. The crew arrived last week and two climbers went up into the trees, roped off, and shimmied out on the limbs to make their cuts. I had a very large tree that had to be taken down, which was going to be quite a complex job due to its proximity to an electrical line and the roof of my house. I got some bids and found Monkeyman's to be the most competitive - expensive, but very reasonable for the job. They took their time cutting the tree down, which I appreciated because it could have done a lot of damage. I think they were here for three days working on it before it was finally completed. One of the limbs did fall on the house and do some damage, but their staff were very helpful and proactive in having it fixed and covering the cost for the full repair. 3/24/26: We had them out a second time and are just as happy as the first. We had Three large trees pruned for health. 40-50' Magnolia thinned and raised the lower canopy for light. Japanese and Red Maple thinned of dead branched and limbs raised off of the roof line. These are these are the original trees from when the house was built in 1978. Great job and cleaned the yard. We had very large maple that needed pruning, along with two other medium trees. Matt was excellent in evaluating what needed to be done and asking us what our goal was. He took great photos of the trees and their location for the bid. He was flexible and accurate in his communication and details. The crew was courteous and on time. The team of Brooks, Steven and Kyle had the system well coordinated and twice asked how I felt they were doing. They cleaned up really well and made sure I was pleased before they took down any equipment. From beginning to end, this was a pleasant experience. Since they'd done good work for me before, I had the Monkeymen back to trim branches that had grown too close to my 2.5-story house. The crew did a bang-up job in good time and were fun to watch. We'd used Monkeyman's Tree Svc in the past & were pleased with the results, but after booking a consultation with their arborist for last Wednesday afternoon, which would have worked given our new home at the coast, they moved it up to a morning time frame without checking to see if that would work, nor did they follow up with an alternative time frame when my husband said he couldn't get to Portland by 7 am. The worst part was that they offered no apology, no acknowledgement that they'd been in the wrong! We're selling our house here in Portland, but if we weren't, we'd still never contact them again. read more

My nearly-dead incense cedar was growing an inch or two from a metal fence and a second, lattice fence, along with mature shrubs on three sides. Very challenging location. I collected three proposals for its removal, Monkeyman was the lowest. They'd been recommended to me by my neighbors for whom they'd done great work. Communication from office was absolutely tops. I called two other services before this one. The first service never sent a quote. the second service said I would have a quote by end of day. when it didn't come, I called the next day, and was told they'd get right on it. i received their quote a week later. When I called Monkeyman, they came out the next day, quoted me by the end of the day and had me in the schedule the next week. Their communication was great and their terms very clear. I don't even know where to begin with how horrible our experience was with Monkeyman's. We asked them to come out to do some general pruning and remove a tree that is an invasive species. The first guy we worked with seemed great, he was responsive and came out and talked us through everything and flagged what needed to be removed for the work crew The work crew was absolutely awful. One, it took 3 appointments for them to even show up. They missed the window every time and I would have to call and ask where they were just to be told they need to reschedule. No courtesy from them whatsoever to understand the burden this puts on working adults. When they did finally show up, it was just me and when my husband was not present they talked down to me, they were demanding and disrespectful from start to finish and also didn't complete some of the work we had outlined. They also repeatedly banged on our sliding glass door to get my attention, even though I was sitting right there. As soon as my husband got home, he noticed they also REMOVED an unflagged, mature, well established tree from our yard without our consent or knowledge. It took 4 months for them to replace the tree they removed, after rescheduling multiple times again, and the tree is at least 3-4 feet shorter than the one they removed. Paying our invoice, even at a discount for our trouble, felt like an absolute joke. The number of hours they wasted, the carefully planned landscaping they destroyed.. they're lucky we haven't pursued small claims yet. This company is an absolute joke and I would never trust them to do any sort of work again. read more

A huge branch from a tree in the greenspace behind my house fell into the yard, just barely grazing my deck. I used a hedge trimmer to trim the smaller branches away from the deck, then I called several tree services. A couple asked me to send photos, but Monkeyman's was the only one to send someone over for an appraisal. Patrick said he would want to trim another long heavy branch from the tree since it looked like it was ready to splinter and fall also. It did, a few days later. Monkeyman's would charge me $700 to do the trimming and take away the trunks and branches. Marcus and the crew came over at the appointed time, and it only took them 45 minutes to clear everything away. As an extra benefit, they used a leaf blower to blow the leaves from my back yard into the greenspace. The people in the crew were personable, diligent, and did an exceptional job. We used Monkeyman several years ago and had a great experience on both occasions. This time was different in that it was during a huge wind and snow storm and two of our neighbor's trees fell on our children's room. Chris has an emergency number you can call in times like this. Considering he had hundreds of calls, all emergencies, he was very responsive and communicated as fast as he could with us. He sent a surveillance team out the next morning and they moved what they could and secured tarp on the roof to keep the elements out. They couldn't finished but promised to come back after they help others get to a stable state. I truly love these guys!So sweet and genuine! They reduced my stress by 100%.
