During the frozen rain storm over the 14th weekend last month our very large Himalayan Cedar decided to remind us that we hadn't pruned it in a few years. Littering my yard and roof with branches, as well as leaving a handful half cracked and perilously hanging ones over the sidewalk, driveway and neighbor's house. We had 4-5 emergency limbs that needed to come down ASAP. Monkeyman came recommended and were able to come out and to do the work about 2 weeks later (note, all of Portland had downed tree so this was quick in the situation). They initially were scheduled at 4pm yesterday but had to push to this morning. Not an issue, it's the pandemic, we're not going anywhere. I hired Monkeymans Tree Service, at a surprisingly good rate to cut down a tall rotting tree. They visited to assess the situation on the same day that I called and completed the job the following morning. This is a true family business. A father (with 26 years experience) arrived with three young sons, all in training to do his job (in this case, climbing my very scary rotting tree). Dad did the climbing while the sons cleared the area and chipped the debris. They were quick, efficient, well-equipped, tidy, professional and friendly. (They also gave me free advice that may have saved me a fortune.) Their experience was obvious--they had everything down to a science. And they landed every tree part exactly where they intended, which was a real relief as my yard is an obstacle course of expensive cement pieces (large fountain, table, benches, architectural antique etc.) As a bonus, they were fun to watch (I took pictures) and a pleasure to converse with. The crew who did the actual work were very professional and carefully explained . what they could and could not do to save my tree that had not only storm damage but was stressed because of the way it was trimmed many years before. Chris and Monkeyman's were great. We had a really tricky tree on our property that needed some seriously skilled people to get it down safely. The job ended up taking longer than expected because of a hornet nest and some rot in the tree that made it more complicated to remove. I called Monkeyman's because I read they not only do trees but can also help with blackberry infestation, which I had in my backyard. I think it was less than a work week from the time that Chris came out, gave me a quote that I accepted, and a team came out and cleaned it all up. I had forgotten how big my back yard even is. ***Update*** Chris, the owner, followed up by phone immediately in response to my review. He was extremely apologetic and explained that he wasn't sure what happened but that he would investigate. He asked if we would give them another chance and had we not already had the trees removed from another company I would. Personally following up on negative reviews speaks volumes about a business and I appreciate the time spent to get to the bottom of what happened. The relationship started off well when I submitted a request for quote. They called within 15 minutes and scheduled an appointment to have someone come out. I confirmed that I didn't have to be there when they stopped by and provided them with a description of the trees that needed to be cut down. They promised an email with a quote that evening but they never showed up to look at the trees nor did they ever follow up with a reason why or a request to reschedule. I emailed them to ask what happened but also let them know that we had opted to go with another company and that they didn't need to reschedule. I assumed I would receive a courtesy email response but didn't. A "no show" and poor communication. read more

Chris the owner got back to me same day, and we were able to coordinate a quick tree limb clean up after the storms in December. They also helped me get the ball rolling on a removal permit, and as soon as that was approved through the city they were able to quickly schedule to remove the tree. I first contacted Monkeyman Tree Service on about June 20th to get some blackberry removal done. For the next nearly 3 weeks, I attempted to get a bid for work to be done. I gave the address, and a three-day window, but he said he couldn't find us on his GPS. Next I send him pictures and a description of the project. I didn't hear back from him for a week and he said his phone died and to please send him the pictures again. I complied with his request. He finally got back to me 4 days later and said he'd have to pass on the project, as he was "slammed at work this summer." We just had Monkeyman come out to do three trees two on our property and one on the neighbors right on the property line. They were amazing. Wonderful to work with. Gave us our estimate within hrs of when they came out to do the bid. And stuck to it. They worked all day in 90 degree weather and got our trees down wonderfully. And fast. Our neighbor added difficulty and confusion to the mix and Chris was nothing but professional and worked hard to give her what she wanted. She was unable to be satisfied. We had an easy time working with them to schedule and understand the permitting process and work with us as the city was backed up in that process. Kyle (the foreman) was awesome to work with and left our home with beautiful rounds for firewood, chips galore and three unwanted trees gone. I decided to investigate to see what company it was removing this large tree because this was something my husband and I had talked about doing at our home. I watched their crew work for a bit and was quite impressed. So I snapped a picture of the company name and gave them a call. Their office staff was so polite and the owner Chris is such a nice man. Incredibly knowledgeable and so professional. We have struggled over the years as to what to do with this incredibly large Silver Leaf Maple in our back yard.
