There is a huge sweet gum on my neighbor's side of the fence whose limbs extended far beyond their property line and blocked the sunlight from one of my young sugar maples and the shrubs and flowers in my front yard. I talked with the neighbor and they agreed that I could take the limbs that extended out beyond the drip line, but they wanted to keep the tree for privacy. James worked with me and determined exactly what would be done that would improve light to my own yard while not disfiguring nor hurting the tree. Donny, another arborist, did the actual cutting and was particular about not cutting arbitrarily along a sight line, but at limb junctures that would not hurt the tree's growth but would allow more light into my yard. The neighbors couldn't even tell that the tree had been trimmed from their side! And now my young maple tree gets light on all sides, and my flowers and shrubs in my front yard get light on more sides and more hours in the day. Monkeymans is a very professional group of arborists who know Portland-area laws about trees and property rights, and who know their different kinds of trees and how to trim them. If you want it done right, by a company who pays their employees fairly and covers all of their employees' insurance (not just one or two workers), these are the guys. Monkeymans Tree Service delivers the goods family style. I needed a large cedar tree removed from a tricky spot a few feet from the front of my house, with my neighbor's fence and roof in the "fall zone". Needed the stump ground out as well to make way for new plantings. Also needed to "surgically" prune an out-of-control tree back to a more proportionate size--- with major branches hanging over a property line. I obtained several estimates for the work. Monkeymans offered straightforward, clear bid terms, a reasonable price, and a family team approach. In my book, Monkeymans beat out both the "one-man bands" and the larger contractors who seemed locked into high price thresholds to mobilize their equipment and crews. Kelly and his sons arrived in force absolutely prepared and equipped for the job. Even in a steady rain, they were cheerful, amiable, totally organized, and focused. i had observed their exceptional skills at a neighbor's; they removed a dangerous giant tree with double trunks. One huge trunk hung over their roof and the other trunk awkwardly hung over their neighbor's roof and yard. Danny's (foreman) thoughtful approach and safety precautions impressed me. At my home, Monkeyman's just completed removal of one tree and heavy pruning of 3 trees that were hazardous to my roof as well as making a big mess. Chris came over to estimate bid cost. He took photos of each tree, told me recommendations for how many branches to limb up, answered all my questions. I felt we had a "meeting of the minds" on the project. He itemized each tree cost and specified cleanup charges so I could click on line items I approved. It was so easy and understandable! Four mature men arrived on time, acted like a solid team, communicated with me and each other in a friendly way, and started work after again checking with me exactly what result I wanted. It looks so much prettier now, as if all trees on my .27 acre lot are a professionally maintained garden. They left my property much cleaner, too. AMAZING quality service! Monkeyman's is a top notch tree service with excellent customer service. Let me tell you about my experience: I contacted 4 tree services for quotes, Monkeyman came in 2nd lowest, but was able to do the work quickest and gave me an additional discount on trimming some trees when I called to schedule the work and told them to omit that part since it didn't fit within our budget. They came out yesterday and removed 2 trees and did some heavy pruning on 2 others. They followed our instructions to a tee (even though I wasn't home) and I am very pleased with the work. They did a superb job on cleanup and left our yard and our neighbors yards immaculate. They contacted our neighbors on both sides to give them a heads up that they'd be working, asked if they needed to move cars, etc. before they got started. Dena arranged to have the stumps ground the very next day which I really appreciated. We had an issue with their truck leaking some oil on our neighbor's driveway but they were extremely professional and courteous in handling that and made it right. What do you look for in a subcontractor? Responsiveness? Communication? Fair price? Quality work? My house was built in 2005 so has about 20 years of growth on 1/4 acre. Has been on my list for the five years we have been in it to get all the trees trimmed back from the sidewalks and property lines. Estimator showed up within a day. Had a proposal same day. Received four proposals, and they were the lowest at $1400 by 10%, and the highest bid was 250% higher. I did have some challenges getting them scheduled, but was during the ice storm where obviously removing trees off houses and cars is a more dire priority. They communicated, were apologetic, made it out within two weeks. Nelson, Michael, and Elah walked the scope of work with me prior to confirm what was approved, knocked out the work in half a day, walked afterwards to confirm completion to my satisfaction, and made sure to clean up after themselves. Always comes down to which crew you get with any service firm, but they will be my first call when I need the current condition maintained going forward. read more

The people with Monkeymans Tree Service are all great. Chris set up an appt for a quote within a couple days after I called. The estimate was VERY reasonable compared to quotes from 2 other companies. The work requested including, Clearing tree branches back from communication lines, cutting 100 feet of back blackberry bushes along the property line, and trimming overgrown laurel hedges along with chipping and removal of all the debris. The actual work was scheduled within a week from the quote. Jeff, his crew of 2 and equipment arrived on time. Jeff confirmed the work that was requested and they all got to work. They were skilled, professional and hard workers. Jeff communicated with me several times to be sure they were on track with the work plan. It was very obvious they all wanted to do a good job and they did. They cleaned up every leave and branch leaving the area like they were never there. They are all great...from the girls that answer the phone...to the Estimator David...to the guys that actually came out and did the work. Last year (2023) they took down a 50 foot tree in my back yard, and also took away & chipped tree limbs that I had on the other side of my backyard fence for free!!! This year on September 18, 2024, I had them take down a big Pine tree in my front yard that was too close to the front of my house. They not only did that, but at the last minute I asked them if they could take down a Pear tree that was too close to my driveway, mailbox, & road...they did that for free!!! I called Kelly to work over our two big sweetgums ( which were dropping alarmingly large limbs on our house, sidewalk, and street) based on the Yelp reviews and a desire to go with a small, family business. He responded right away, educated me about the permit I had to get from the city, and even sorted things out with the city arborists himself when the permit they issued didn't appear to cover the kind of work our trees needed. Kelly's six-person crew (his sons, daughter-in-law, and a friend) put in a full day of labor to lighten the trees all over. They were knowledgeable, careful and professional; thoughtful about shielding my small children from noise and exhaust; and did a thorough clean-up at the end. In a word, professional. From the initial contact, estimate, contract, scheduling, reminder notice, arrival, tree work to clean-up. I have a massive Doug fir that is sandwiched between two houses, a fence, two sets of power lines with a lovely Japanese maple below (that was left unscathed). The team of three were all extremely pleasant and worked well together (which seems important when there are logs flying down from the sky). They cut all the lower branches that were getting into the power lines to the houses, cut out the dead and crossed limbs, and corrected some previous sins committed against the poor tree. Chris, the estimator was extremely knowledgeable about my dying maple as well as the appropriate time to prune my other trees. The office gal, Dena helped walk me thru the permit process as well as suggest several tree replacement options and help me come up with one that will not get too big for my yard. Last but certainly not least, Jeff was efficient and skilled in taking down an incredibly large tree from an area surrounded by homes & a garage and their arborist (forgot his name) planted my new tree beautifully. If I could give a rating with additional stars, I would do just that. We had a massive old oak fall from our hill. Panicked, I started searching for a professional to help and not only did Monkeymans call me back within an hour (on New Years Day) Kelly came the next morning and gave me a bid. A very fair bid was offered and by 2:00 in the afternoon Monkeymans was on site working. It's truly a family affair, as father and sons worked tirelessly in very cold temperatures into the dark, to complete this very challenging clean up. We recently had an incident where a 40' tree uprooted and leaned against our house. It was close so it didn't damage our house as it 'fell', but the tree was rather precariously situated. I wanted it gone before it had a chance to shift and cause damage. I called over a half dozen companies and Monkeymans was the only one who responded promptly and got someone out that day to look things over. They came out the next day and had the tree down. Took them only a few hours and they were able to remove it without so much as a scratch to our paint. I'm not sure how good a deal I got as no one else responded in a reasonable time and this was my first tree work in Portland. But I don't feel I got ripped off or anything and I will definitely consider them when I have more work. read more

What? Only 5 stars available? These guys just finished taking out a dying 50' maple, right next to and over our house - all in just 4 hours. And that included piling the logs after cutting them to firewood lengths, mulching all branches, and doing an amazing cleanup considering what they had just accomplished. All the members of the crew were friendly, hard working, professional, and skilled. They even mulched some old branches from another tree and pulled what could have been a dangerous snag that was hanging in yet anther tree (I wouldn't have known that if I had not asked!) Finally, they did the job for substantially less than the other bids I got. All around great job and I could not be more pleased. Highly recommend. read more

Our neighbor's chestnut tree is huge and its many branches hangs, actually pours, over our house and shed. We contacted three tree services and chose Monkeyman's because we liked the owner, Chris. He took his time with us and gave us some extra tips on how to prune a tree correctly. When the crew came out, they did not use a lift, which is what many services use, but ropes and people who climbed the tree safely and effetely. The chestnut tree was trimmed so that it appears to have had a good haircut. Cleanup was wonderful. They hauled away all the branches, swept the ground, and left the place cleaner that what it was when they arrived. I suggest you give Monkeyman's Tree Service a call. read more

I needed several things done including cutting down a small tree, taking out a dead tree, trimming a maple way back and a hard trimming of a very large laurel hedge. An arborist was sent to help advise me on the best way to keep my trees healthy and provide the quote for work. Communication through the whole project was great including scheduling and reminders from the office manager, information given by the arborist at the initial consultation and the team lead on site the day the work was done. Tree trimming, hedge shaping a fir limb removal. We have lived in our home 20 years and have had our trees serviced 4-5 times. Monkeyman did by far the most through job on our trees we've ever had. Had pre and post job walk through for the job to make sure we were satisfied with the removal. They cleaned up after the job and left our property as if they were never there. Without hesitation, we will hire Monkeyman for any additional work we need in the future. The price was very reasonable for the amount of work that was completed. A neighbor recommended Monkeyman's Tree Service, so I called for a quote. Chris came over and provided a quote along with recommendations on how to protect our trees. We had an ant infested Ash tree that had to come down it was so bad. The tree was leaning and in a very tight spot by the house, a fence, another tree and a very mature established bush.
