My Wife, daughter and I ate dinner at Monks BBQ on 9/2/2022. I ordered Burnt Ends, Mac and Cheese. I also ordered the smoked chicken wings for the table. The burnt ends are very flavorful. Very tasty. Most of them were tender, in fact, very chewy. The texture of the burnt ends was disappointing. I order burnt ends because I expect them to be tender. I used the Carolina mustard sauce - absolutely delicious. I love it. Their homemade hot sauce is tasty but could use more heat in my opinion. The wings were cooked perfectly. The really needed some seasoning, especially Salt. My wife and daughter both had the brisket burger with Mac and Cheese. The burgers were tasty. I really like the Mac and Cheese. It's very rich, creamy. I feel the size of the side portions to be small, less than a cup. In the past I have eaten their homemade Pastrami. It's absolutely delicious. I would give an extra 1/2 star if that was an option. Based on the burnt ends and lack of flavor on the wings, I am leaving it at 3. Possibly the best thing on the menu is the custard corn bread. I thought maybe I was just a bad sport, but I've again been let down by Monks. The sauces here are doing some very heavy lifting. Pork is yet again extremely dry. Chicken maybe was oven baked? It was completely white inside, no flavor penetrated the skin at all. Completely tasteless. Mac and cheese- also bland, boring, and mostly cheese-less. I've tried to excuse the occasional off day, but my recent takeout order was a letdown: missing all sides and overcooked meats. I didn't notice the issues until I got home, which made it even more frustrating and time consuming. When I returned to address the missing sides, the staff questioned my claim and dismissed my concerns about the overcooked meat, refusing to replace one of the dishes (which was even more frustrating given the incovenience and since it was 30 mintes from when I received my first order). While I'd normally overlook a single bad experience, the inconsistent quality and poor customer service recently have changed my view. Regrettably, I can no longer recommend Monk's. read more

After biking the nearby W&OD Trail, I decided to reward myself with some barbecue, of which many people have previously told me Monk's BBQ serves up some of the best in the DMV. As this will be review number 500 for the place, there are plenty of more detailed write-ups, so here are my notes from my visit: Ambiance and Décor: I'd describe it as a "modern rustic chic". The interior of the restaurant is sectioned off into distinct areas such as the bar, small retail space, BBQ sauce station, and dining areas. The dining room off the right of the entrance has large picnic bench and table seating, along with more traditional tables with white and black chairs. My small group opted to sit outside since the weather was nice and we could see the pit masters stoking the fires to make the charcoal to feed the smokers. I do appreciate having plentiful outdoor seating. Food: I ordered the brisket platter since my server indicated that was Monk's specialty. Four huge pieces of slow smoked meat arrived at my table on Texas toast with a side of collard greens. While I found the brisket to be extremely juicy, I was a bit disappointed with the house spice rub. Honestly, the only real flavor profile I could discern was salt but there was a good deep smoky flavor infused into the meat. Collards were tasty and fork tender, but a little too sweet for my palate. But huge bonus for the amazing selections of sauces you can pair your 'cue with. Rather than the usual set-up where sauces come in bottles and people have to perform high-touch handling to delicately insert condiments into small sauce containers, Monk's hangs sauce bottles and customers can squeeze as much or little as desired. Much smarter design and probably more hygienic in the era of COVID precautions. My favorites were the Carolina mustard and Alabama White; but really all of the sauces were pretty good. Value: The brisket platter is $12.99 so with tax and tip (no drink, just water), I spent $16 during my visit. Monk's definitely gets a star here, since the portion sizes were generous and a similar brisket platter within 15 miles of DC proper would've costs me at least $15-$18. After two slices of my brisket, I was full and had leftovers for lunch the next day. Monk's is a great spot for bbq aficionados and will plan to come back for their live music during the weekends. read more

The flavor of the bbq we had, pork, brisket were fantastic! The smoked bacon wrapped jalapeños were also flavorful and a delicious complement. Smoked mushrooms and Gouda Mac n cheese were a nice touch, but not great. As long as the bbq is good! We're happy! Our only downside was the brisket was ultra fatty, and inedible. Most of the flavor is outside of the meat so you wanted a mouth full of fat you did not get much flavor in each bite. The bit of meat we got was pretty good. We particularly like the potato salad... the beans are good but today way too sweet for us... this time we also got the pickles which were tangy. Loved it so much the first time had to return. What made me sad the first time around was they were out of turkey, brisket, and burnt ends. Second trip had everything and boy did we order a ton of items! Their brisket burger was to die for. Never had anything quite like that. They have a huge variety of BBQ sauces with a nice station setup. They were mostly vinegar based sauces and my favorite was the Alabama white sauce. We ordered one of everything and were so pleased. I'm going to start this by pointing out that it is a local favorite for a lot of folks. But, personally, it's just not my favorite place... even as a fan of BBQ in general. Our family has tried it several times and each time are just not that impressed. First is the menu and ordering. It always feels like a struggle. They don't offer any sort of sampler or equivalent dish, so you have to choose whether you want just pulled pork or just brisket or just pulled chicken etc. and that's fine because that's how they do they menu. Each selection can be just the meat with a piece of cornbread or as a sandwich. You also get one side. Price begins at $13.99 for each of these. So for $13.99 you might get a pulled pork sandwich and a small side of potatoes. No fair Town drinks on the menu except tea... otherwise you can have canned or bottle beverages. They do have a nice selection of BBQ sauces for some variety. But if you don't have a selection of meats to sample them on, what's the point? As for her woods menu, well that's even tougher. On one hand I commend them for not just having the traditional kids choices... on the other hand, if all your child will eat is chicken tenders or cheese burgers or pizza or pasta, etc... then you're out of luck. Suffice it to say, the menu is not kid friendly which makes this tough for family dinner. Drinks or even worse. Small apple juice boxes or water are your only choices unless you want to give you kids soda. Overall it's not bad I guess. The food is okay, just overpriced for what you get. Not really family friendly. The menu is just limited unless you want to rack up your bill. Some ability to create a sampler platter would be great. If you like BBQ it's probably worth at least trying. But there are better BBQ places out there with better options/variety. And certainly ones that are better with kids. read more

Monks is a tale of ups & downs. When they are on the upside, they are the best BBQ in the area. When down, they're barely average. My recent order, the turkey was overcooked & the "bark" was solid pepper, which most of us cut off. The brisket was overcooked & the bark had way too much salt, and I love salt. The chicken wings were over cooked & way too seasoned. I personally didn't mind the seasoning, but everyone else ended up giving me their wings. But I did mind the overcook. The pulled pork was ok, but not great. We had leftovers which says a lot. This time Monks was barely average & if I didn't know how good they can be, I'd never come back. My first time at Monk's - I stopped by to get a to-go order. I entered with a facemask properly positioned on my face - all the staff were wearing masks. I ordered a variety of meats in the bulk options: Brisket, ribs, pulled pork, plus sides of Collard Greens, Vinegar Slaw, Smoked Gouda Mac and Cheese, and Monk's Beans. As part of placing my order, they asked what my vehicle was, and then requested I wait in my vehicle. About 10 minutes later, a masked Monk's staffer came out to my vehicle to deliver my order. Took it home and had a feast! I had BBQ for almost a week. It was all very delicious. The ribs and brisket were particularly good! I observed the other customers while waiting for my order - most were wearing masks. Except for one clueless family that showed up - 7 people - and not a single one with a mask on. I first went to Monk's in June 2024 and it was heavenly. We got the mixed platter. Everything was good, but the pastrami and bacon were especially wonderful. Today I went again - June 2025 - and found that the quality had deteriorated. I seems that they are using a lot more sugar in the preparation and cooking process. Monk's BBQ does not have table service even when asked if there would be a server and informed that there would be one - you are asked if you would like to leave a tip up front which we did expecting table service like most restaurants. No waiter or waitress comes to your table to take your order and keep your drinks full or provide silverware or a request for barbecue sauce or even drinks which requires you to go to the bar or soda stand yourself if you wish to have a drink with your meal. .When we walked in the door, we were informed that there would be a server and upon choosing and paying for what we wanted when we proceeded to the table we asked about silverware and were told we had to get it ourselves as well as the bbq sauce and you will have to proceed to the bar to get a drink on your own.. We will probably not return. The food was good but the portions were small. One would expect BBQ places to have excellent service where we can sit and relax, while we order our food and beverages. These BBQ spots keep outdoing each other in the dmv here. But monks for sure has taken the championship belt in terms of bbq. Place is 45 min from my house with NO TRAFFIC and I still prefer to go here then the spots 10 min from my house. If you break down each main and side dish they have perfected them each individually and when you combine them into a meal it's a different level of harmony. The brisket was smoked to perfection and honestly will take a couples of trips there before you switch to getting the pork or something. The Mac and cheese was great and the cheese blend they used for it matched well. THE CORN BREAD HERE IS THE BEST CORN BREAD ON THE EAST SIDE OF MISSISSIPPI. Seeing the big smokers as we walked into Monk's gave me comfort that these guys take their bbq seriously. And we were right. My wife and I ordered the ribs and the brisket. Both were excellent and had that nice red smoke ring that all barbecuers hope for. That said, I'd say the smoke flavor was on the milder side. Not a critique - just a point of fact. Maybe it was due to the kind of wood they were using. The meat on the ribs fell off the bone, so much so that I'd say they were slightly over cooked. But that's nit-picking. My real problem with Monk's was with their sides. The cooks probably spend so much time on their meats that the sides are an afterthought. We got the Mac and cheese, smashed potato, pickles and beans. Plus cornbread. Honestly, none of them were good. On top of that, the serving size for each of them was very small and they were expensive. The smashed potatoes were basically two very small red potatoes, boiled and put into a styrofoam cup with butter on top. For $4. The pickles were a few cucumber chips with vinegar and onions. Another $4. It's obvious where these guys make their money. I was also not a fan of the cornbread. It had this weird jello-like consistency. The one thing that kept coming to mind when I was eating it was an odd dessert called Turkish delight, if anyone knows what that is. When you pull up you are immediately immersed in the smell of smokers. It's incredible. This place isn't particularly frilly and that's how you know it's good. I want to be buried in their gouda Mac and cheese. I cannot eat mammal meat sadly, so I judge barbecue often by their poultry offerings and my husband's word. The smoked turkey was so good and not dry. There is a range of sauce options from Carolina Vinegar, Carolina Mustard, House (kind of Kansas City style), Alabama white sauce, and more. The vinegar slaw was a nice light complement to the heavier Mac and cheese and to their custard-style cornbread (it is very tender but not savory, more akin to corn pudding than corn bread). My husband loved the brisket and pastrami and raved about the Monk's beans. There is a full stocked bar if you'd like a beverage with your meal. I also like the fact they had a nice array of sauces. Some were a bit unusual - berry flavors mixed in - but others had a nice assortment of heat. We used Monks for our engagement party and are so happy we did! Their catering menus have much more variety than their regular menu, but pastrami, brisket, and baked beans are a classic must from the regular menu. Mac and cheese is smoky, thick and creamy. Corn bread is a custard corn bread so don't be surprised when you bite into it. Their service was excellent and the catering manager helped us work through ordering. Everyone eats happy with Monks. We've since gotten Monks more times than we can count! They do curbside pick up which is a pandemic must. No delivery anymore though, they're just too busy! read more

You can find brisket, burnt ends, ribs, and other delectable entrees to please the discerning BBQ palette. There is a special going on everyday, and their Happy hour runs until 9PM on Monday and Tuesday, and until 7PM the rest of the week. The beer on tap is great as is their bourbon selection (I had to include a photo). You will find seating outdoors, as well as ample parking. If you looking to sweeten your palette after the bbq, there is a quaint shop that sells ice cream right next door. Overall, I highly recommend Monks. We ordered the piglet, which came with all of meat on the menu. This came with a side of pickles, slaw, but we ordered additional sides - mac and cheese, mushrooms, rice, mash potatoes and beans. A staff brings you all of the food, which comes out pretty quick and it was super delicious. They had a sauce station, which was self- serve and had about 6 sauces to choose from.
