We visited Monk's after going on a little winery hopping tour, and were somewhat disappointed. We got the brisket and pulled chicken (1/4 lb each), which were not very tender and somewhat dry. The sides (beans, smashed potatoes, corn bread with custard filling) were much better, although the beans were a little too sweet and I couldn't eat them after a while. This meal (as pictured) was over $40 -- this price given the portions and quality were not worth the stop here unfortunately.

While visiting the area on vacation, we stopped at Monk's BBQ. Upon entering the restaurant with my family, we were greeted by the owner, who was very kind and engaging throughout the meal. Food You place your order at the counter from their menu. They have all of your standard BBQ meats and some variations on sides. We went with the Piglet, which included chicken, brisket, burnt ends, pastrami, ribs, and hot links. We got smoked Gouda Mac & cheese, dirty rice, and corn breads for the sides. The meats were all pretty good. The chicken and pastrami were my two favorite cuts. The Mac & cheese was my favorite thing on the menu. The Gouda really added something to it. We split and apple cobbler at the end that was delicious. 3.5/5 Service Staff was kind and courteous throughout. The owner made the experience even more enjoyable. He brought my daughter a lollipop and crackers for my son when he would come check on us. He brought treats for our dog too. 5/5 Ambiance Monk's had your typical feel of a BBQ restaurant. It wasn't nearly as Smokey on the inside as other places, but still shared similar layout. They had a cool BBQ class setup on the counter and called them utters. It was very clever. 4/5 Monk's was a good overall experience. The good was a little pricey, but it was good. The owner will make sure you enjoy yourself as well. Give Monk's a shot.

This is the piglet which probably weighs about 5 pounds or close to not including the two sides

Outstanding! I do my own barbecue at home and I won't go to a place twice if I do better barbecue and this place just does a little bit of everything really well. I'd like the sauces to be a little spicier, but that's an East Coast thing the service is on point and the beer selection is more than enough. I like the fact that you can sit outside on a warm summer day and chill with the environment. This place is more than an hour away from my house and I would definitely travel there when passing through. They do beef ribs on occasions. I wish the occasion was every Day.

My husband and I were in the area and decided to give monks another chance. The cashier cautioned us against ordering the burnt ends so we decided to order something different. I got the ribs, and my husband ordered the brisket. Both were phenomenal! The ribs were very tender and literally fell off the bone. We also got the gouda Mac n cheese and it was delicious. Now that we have found our favorite dishes, we can't wait to eat at Monks again!

Vibe: 7.75/10 - very clean and great atmosphere, but when it gets busy tables inside can be limited Service: 9.7/10 - food comes so fast! Value: 8.5/10 The piglet: 9.5/10 - so much amazing food for a great deal!! Def can split this between AT LEAST 3-4 people, depending on appetites Our favorite meats here (in order) are: 1) ribs 2) Alabama chicken 3) brisket Overall: 8.86/10 (4.43/5) [To clarify our review system: 10 = we'll never have anything else as good as this in our lives (we use 10 very sparingly!) 9 = extraordinary 8 = great 7 = above average 6 = average Anything below 6 is being critical]

Over the weekend we adventured out to monks BBQ. Overall the service was great the atmosphere was welcoming and plenty of space outside downstairs and upstairs. We got the boss platter which is about $135 but it's worth it because it's a lot of meat you also get coleslaw jalapenos and pickles plenty of it. The coleslaw is mainly radish but that's okay. We also ordered cornbread The cornbread is really sweet and moist so if you like cake like cornbread it's really good you won't need a dessert later. This is how barbecue was meant to be.

I haven't been here in a few years but I can't pass through Purcellville without stopping at Monk's. Today I had the brisket and a Texas hot link, baked beans and cornbread. Everything was scrumptious! Im a bit of a bean snob but these were really good. Especially with a shot of their scorpion barbecue sauce.

Was a great lunch. Could hardly get my mouth around the brisket cheeseburger . Food could've been a little warmer though...

One of my coworkers recommended this place. Growing up in the South I live BBQ and eat it often. I am disappointed that I have not tried it here before. This is hands down the best BBQ I've had in the area. We sat at the bar and the server was warm and friendly. They have an extensive liquor selection and several local brews on tap. From the smell in the parking lot of the smokers to the food at the bar this place is amazing.

A friend recommended this place to us and on our way back from a trip to PA we stopped to fuel up on some BBQ. We arrived around 2 on a Thursday. We pulled in the driveway and immediately smelled the wood burning and BBQ and got excited. Ordered brisket, pastrami, and burnt ends as well as some potato salad and baked beans. As expected- BBQ was great (tender and perfectly smokey) and the sauces were tasty though we didn't really need them. The white sauce (horseradish cream) was a favorite. The pastrami was such a treat too! Would definitely go back if we were in the area.

Expensive. Nothing less than $14.00. Cans and bottles of water and soda. No fresh made ice tea. Industrial feel.

Accordingly, I recommended it to my parents for a special meal, and round two was not as good. We were sat upstairs, which detracted from the ambience substantially, but worse was our server. From the moment she greeted us, we could tell she did not want to be there. She brought red wine in white wine glasses and a bread basket with only three pieces to a table of four people. I pointed this out and requested more bread, so that each of us could have a piece, but she never returned with more as she agreed to do. (Eventually a different server brought us more bread upon second request.) After food was served, I don't recall seeing her to check in until we'd finished eating. Absolutely unacceptable when you're waiting on a table that's putting down more than $250 before tip. Food wise, pretty happy. Fried green tomato was good; pincaha was salty but well cooked (chimichurri overpowering); duck was nice; and pastas were rich. I'd be back but specify that I want a table on the main floor, not upstairs between the bathroom and kitchen. I'd also be on the lookout for the redheaded waitress with the chip on her shoulder.

Overall the prices are high for the quality. 1) Hamburger and Fried green tomato appetizer were very good and delicious. Definitely suggest 2) French Onion soap was agreed to by everyone at the table as not very good ( almost sweet) and the worst they ever had. 3) The blacked shrimp were over cooked and tasted bad ( they were in my Cobb salad which was simply ok). Would definitely not get again 4) Crab had a great deal of filler. We will visit again, but will try other items. For the price, our expectations should be met much higher.

No not the caliber of players, no not the music genre... it's the volume! Three times we've been with friends and the volume inside is almost an assault on the ears (.. and my wife says I'm hard of hearing!). We love, love, love live music. Local artists? Incredible! But, for the volume of the music to become the focus of the day, you'd best be The Rolling Stones! We may have come out to hear someone play, but most importantly we've visited to share good times with our friends, catch up, and laugh.
