Aside from the fact that they might serve every food known to man (the menu is insanely large; I thought I might find Braised Kangaroo), these folks are the kind of people you want to root for and make sure they survive this stupid virus. Mediocre food but with heart. I've never had a meal which I would consider bad here... And also never had anything better than good. Burgers, as the name of this joint would suggest are served fresh off the grill complete with charcoal burnt ends. The kitchen is UBER eager to please, accepting any special request without a huff... and whenever I eat at the counter the cook eyes my reaction to his food through the kitchen window to make sure I am enjoying it. Idk how one messes up salad and chicken fingers but of all the diners in NJ I have tried this one stood out for not being good.

I stumbled upon the Montclair Diner after an outing at Montclair State University with some co-workers. We wanted to have a nice lunch, drove past the Montclair Diner and decided, hey, it's a diner, can't be that bad. It was. I like diner food. I'm from Jersey, so of course I like diner food. We ordered mozzarella sticks to start and they came out fast. Very fast. They were good, can't really mess those up. For lunch, I ordered the buffalo chicken panini, which comes with fries and a side of blue cheese. Once again, our meals came out REALLY fast. One look at my buffalo chicken panini and I was disappointed with my choice. First, I had to ask for the blue cheese. Second, this was in no way a panini. To me, a panini, is pressed with grilled marks and warm. This was just a buffalo chicken sandwich with tomato and lettuce. When I picked up the sandwich everything just fell right out. I decided to just pick at it with my fork. Even the fries were tepid. I was not impressed with the Montclair Diner and from reading the other reviews I should have probably just stuck with a breakfast item. I should have known better! read more

People were super friendly but my order came out wrong. Not a problem typically but no one came by to check in on my table or ask how the food was- so I couldn't exactly send it back. When the waitress finally came to check on the table- she did apologize but I could only eat half of my sandwich and the fries- leaving behind the bulk of the main. I told her about the mistake and pointed to the pile of tomatoes that came out when I specified no tomatoes - which to her credit, was on the written order- and her response was an apology, which was appreciated but I couldn't eat my intended meal and it remained untouched on my plate. When she came back to ask if I wanted the main portion wrapped, I said no- because you could taste what specified I did not want, she replied: , 'oh well, I yelled at them but they don't care what I say.' To be clear- I did eat half of the main portion and the fries. Ok so I am a diner fan through and through and this one was a delight. The new owners are embracing the menu that the regulars know and love and then bring in some really amazing specials. I had the yummy toast. It lives up to the name. It was so light and flavorful and well yummy lol. They have a syrup but it's so good you might not even need it. So check plus there. Another patron had the brick chicken special and said it was truly the best chicken he has ever had. Then there is Elliot. He is one of the new owners and he's absolutely amazing. He's very kind, spoke to all the people in the diner, and even sat down with me for a bit to talk about how excited they are to be in the location. The waitress Maude was also a complete sweetheart. She was so attentive I felt like I was visiting a family friend. So all in all- great people, delicious specials, and yummy toast. What more do you need? read more

Went for dinner at 7PM. My husband ordered hot open turkey with gravy. It was so tough the knife would not cut it. The waitress came over and asked how the food was, we told her the turkey was extremely tough. She did not even respond. She took my plate and left my husband's dish in front of him. I thought she was walking back to the kitchen to tell them. However she did not. She came back again and asked my husband if he would like a to go container to take his food, again we said to her the turkey is so tough it's not edible. Again she did not say any words and handed us our check. We paid via Credit card and she asked if we would like to put the tip on I told her no I would leave her cash. She was lucky she got 15% I know she did not cook the food but she asked how our meal was and really did not care all she had to do was go tell the kitchen. The staff were great, the service was superb and the owner's are super friendly. Love what they did with the place and the music makes it a place where I will always come back for more. I heard about this on Face Book. Me and a couple of my friends went there today. All I can say is horrible! We ordered Calamari and Buffalo Wings as appetizers. The Calamari tasted like old sneakers fried in cornmeal the Buffalo Wings were regular. Then the Turkey Burger and Cheese Burger were disgusting. We even tried the Fried Chicken wasn't seasoned at all (let me rephase that the batter was seasoned but not the chicken) We left couldn't eat the food. Never again. read more

I was very disappointed with my experience at Montclair diner. The server we had was completely unprofessional. For starters, she brought us filthy champagne glasses with lipstick and food on them. She also did not offer to open our bottle of Prosecco as the restaurant is BYOB. After she noticed that she brought us dirty glasses, she washed them out and brought them back. Honestly I was so turned off, I didn't even drink out of them because our utensils were dirty as well (we just asked for plastic afterwards). Now onto the food, I ordered corned beef hash, and eggs. They served canned corned beef hash okay, CANNED! I was literally over it, and will not be going back. I love this place! I've eaten here as long as I can remember (it's important to note that this was way back when Gus owned it) and it's been the same amazing food the entire time! I love what the new owners have done with the place. From only changing the menu slightly (also for the better) to making merchandise! I'd recommend the spaghetti. Montclair is a town over saturated with bland and expensive "trendy" restaurants. The Montclair Diner is a much needed ray of light with its reasonably priced delicious food. Local diner has only one other review?! Kind of nutty. Friendly staff, mediocre food. It was desolate on a Thursday night, but picked up with families and regulars before we left around 8:30pm. I think our waitress was only serving us when we first got in, and I still had to ask again for something I'd initially asked extra for when we placed our order. Had a burger deluxe, pretty standard diner burger except the bottom bun was chilly to the touch, and my dude had eggs and toast. He wanted a Taylor ham, egg and cheese sammie but thought it was stupid that every part of the sandwich was extra, i.e. cheese alone was an extra 75cents, so just the sandwich would have cost more than an egg platter and almost as much as an omelette, which comes with potatoes and toast. Is that normal for diner fare? Sounds a little weird. The rest of our food was cheap though - total under $15 for breakfast, a burger and a soda. I'd come back but would probably want to give another restaurant in the area a shot too if I wasn't craving diner food. PS I think this diner is BYOB?! A family near us had a six pack. This was my first visit and the place simply felt like a small slice of heaven on earth! The owners were very warm, welcoming and truly vibrated an energy that made me feel like they cared about my experience as a patron of their business. Theeeeeen came the food....I ordered the Pumpkin Spice Yummy French Toast and my senses were well pleased with each bite. The toast smelled amazing, presented well, was fluffy as well as moist. What made the dish even more delicious was the fact that it had just the right amount of sweetness without a bit of syrup being added to it. I was a little disappointed with the food after finding out it was under new management. My friend and I split the Montclair panini (grilled chicken, mozzarella, and roasted red peppers) and the berry berry French toast. The panini was on the soggier side so it was easier to eat with a fork and knife. It comes with fries (which were crispy and salted nicely), cole slaw (I overheard was made inhouse but didn't try), and a pickle. We were expecting a berry compote or preserve to top the French toast but it only came with a drizzle of a fruit flavored sauce and icing. The syrup was also super thick which was not to our liking. Could not WAIT to try this spot once I heard there were new owners. And I was pleasantly surprised that it was still amazing, if not even better! There is swift service and a friendly atmosphere to make any "out of towner" feel at home and welcomed. I suggest the Yummy Toast for those who aren't as adventurous with trying new foods and the crab cake Benedict for the slightly more advanced food connoisseur. Overall, my girls and I had a great dining experience. It's very much inclusive so don't think you can't stop with your children. There is something on the menu for all ages! In my opinion, the 5 star rating I gave was more than earned....especially since one of the hardest parts about traveling with your family is making sure that certain stops appeal to EVERYONE!
