Monterrey has good food and thru the years they have changed their menu, not for the better my the way. That being said the food is still the best here in the Villa Rica area, we have tried several others but those were not "real" Mexican food. Now the kicker at this restaurant is that they got rid of all their EXCELLENT wait staff for incompetent, rude, and discourteous staff. This makes your restaurant look very bAd...but it seems that this is the direction the owners want to go, even if it kills their business. The staff is the reason they only get one star!!! I went to this restaurant today and was very upset with how I was treated. I am an African American and they completely looked over me in a line with Caucasians, as if I didn't exist. When the other members of the line came and told me to go ahead of them since they completely skipped me. The employee did not try to rectify what he had done. The food, drinks, service, and prices are excellent. We got a 20oz frozen margarita, a regular Texas margarita, cheese dip, shrimp fajitas, and la lancha. Monterey use to be a good Mexican restaurant. The last few times I have ordered, however the quality of the food has declined and has been extremely salty. On 12/3, I placed an order for the California burrito which arrived like it has been thrown together as slop. When I contacted the restaurant and sent pictures I was told it must have just unrolled because of the fillings. I have ordered many burritos and as you will in the pictures, this was not an unrolled burrito. The mere lack of customer service was unfathomable and I will not be returning. read more

This was not good or authentic Mexican food. And if anyone has ever received it at this place, then I guess we just so happened to come on a bad day, but I don't think so after reading the bad reviews on this place. I'm Mexican, I grew up in Los Angeles, and I've been to the real Mexico many times, so the flavor of the food will be based on those facts. To sum it up, the food was tasteless. Everything we received was except for some enchiladas. We ordered carne asada, fajitas, tamales, guacamole, wings, enchiladas, the tres plate which had chicken, shrimp, and steak. And is supposed to come with rice and beans but once the food came out the waiter told us "sorry, the cook just told him they ran out of rice..." Again, the food had no taste, we had to add salt to everything just for some kind. The portions for the more expensive plates were small. Not worth it. The meats were dry. I can see the clientele is really not Hispanic AT ALL so I don't think they know what authentic Latin food of any kind is supposed to taste like. And the real reason I would never come back is I've eaten "Mexican" at places that even though it's not authentic it's still good food. This was just plain bad. The reason it doesn't get 1 star is because the server was really good. He came around and made sure he apologized for others mistakes. Yall!! Yall!! Yall!! *southern belle voice* I have been to this restaurant I am sure about five times to enjoy the family environment, food, and TEXAS MARGARITAS that are no doubt to hitchhike for. However, I wanted to "expose" my good friend to the margaritas and was telling her where the restaurant was. She proceeded to tell me she knew all about the restaurant because her and her husband went to find roaches crawling on their table. I assured her that was a long time ago and it would be different this time. I WAS WRONG!!!! As I was teasing about roaches being in our salsa, two roaches decided to peep their heads on the bar where we were sitting. We called the bar tender and he reacted by grabbing a napkin to pick the roaches up only to drop them back on the bar and having to chase them down the bar. When he caught them he said "I am so sorry you all to see that." So ummmmm if we had not seen it, it makes it alright? Needless to say we got our drinks free but I won't be back. read more

This place can be off putting and you can easily drive by it, but I say one should stop and re-think before you do. I dont eat Mexican food nowadays on account that hubby is not a fan (seriously, why, right?) but I somehow convinced him to come here last week and it was a pleasant surprise. Hubby is not a fan of cilantro (again, why??!!) and he really enjoyed the salsa here. I, on the other hand was tempted to request for some since I like cilantro. The chips were on the thinner side which how I prefer it anyway. I had the Carne Asado which was about $10, I most definitely love it! It's steak chopped in small bits marinated in this awesome goodness and sear-fried. It comes with this sauce and it comes in three soft flour tortillas which was aplenty! It also came with a plate of Mex rice and re-fried beans. Nom Nom! I am getting hungry just thinking about it. Hubby had the dinner plate of Chimichangas with beef tips, sour cream, avocado, lettuce, rice and refried beans for also $10. And this one was also really good. I honestly think they season their meats differently here because although the concept and the re-fried beans and rice are standard, the actual meat inside the chimichanga and my carne asado is quite different from the Mex restaurants I've had before! And me likey! This place always print out buy one get one dinners during the week. I can't remember where they usually advertise, but they're around. I actually used one that was supposed to be in the Fairburn location so they just gave me a $5 discount instead. Still not bad. Service was fair and the food came out hot and quick. All in all, don't judge this restaurant by it's location and it's outside appearance. However, I am weary about one of Yelpers mentioning roaches?? HHHUUU--WWWHHHAAATTT?? I didnt see any when we visited and the place looked clean. *shudder -- I sure will check out the FDA grading for them next time around! :P read more

Ok, i've been going to this Monterey's for about 28 years. I can remember as a kid going by McDonald's and getting a happy meal for my sister then going to Monterey's to eat. I think its good probably because i've been going there for so very long. The food is very average mexican food with lots of numbered combinations made up of about seven different items. Those items however, are very well made. The fajitas are always great, the salads are fresh, the sauces are spicy and delicious. like i said, i could be a little jaded. The drinks tend to be strong. I usually only get margaritas when i'm wiht my family and they always get the job done, if you know what i mean. The service is always pretty good, usually not the fastest but very friendly. Horrible!! The server seemed as if he were in a rush. Unwilling to answer questions. I ordered a quesadilla with light onions and chicken only. But i received a quesadilla with onions, peepers and everything else. He clearly didn't listen. He never refilled our drinks. But he filled those around us like the larger parties. What's crazy is we eat at the other Monterrey on Fairburn Road and have he best food and experience. I've been in Douglasville my entire life and this was the second time I've ever been here.
