Their patties are all frozen and largely tasteless, the old dark rye is now stale marbled rye and after 3 attempts, they could not manage to make a medium rare burger. 2 burgers and three glasses of overly sweet sangria with tax and tip = $60....outrageous! I ate here once this summer and will not be going back. The service, food, and decor were all below average. As for the service, my husband and I waited over 15 minutes for our drinks and waited over 20 minutes for our check once we were finished eating even though it was not busy when we were here. We also were never asked if we wanted refills on our margaritas, which I found odd. We had a hard time flagging down our waiter and constantly saw all staff standing around in the back talking to each other rather than working. As for the food, my husband said the burger tasted frozen and re-heated rather than fresh. He was extremely disappointed, since he expected a place advertising award-winning burgers to have fresh-tasting meat. He said he's had better burgers from McDonald's. The fries that came with the burger were extremely plain and unseasoned. The worst I've tasted. As a vegetarian, I was also disappointed to learn that the veggie burger was not made in-house. For this reason, I ordered a salad. It was the worst salad I've ever had, since it had barely any toppings or dressing and was nearly all plain lettuce. Even after eating it all, I was still hungry and was so dissatisfied that I stopped at another restaurant on the way home to get more food. Finally, I was seriously disappointed with the outdoor patio. I've walked past this place hundreds of times and have always thought the patio looked cute...but actually being in the patio was a different experience. The chairs were basic plastic chairs people have at their homes and they were all wobbly and falling apart. The furniture was pealing and the garden area was bare- nothing planted and no cute decorations. Tons of bugs flying around, old pealing menus, and dirty table surfaces. It would be so easy to make this outdoor seating area absolutely stunning, but instead it is being wasted by this restaurant that is clearly not trying to impress anyone. I should start by saying that this review is tainted by disappointment. This is not just a place I didn't like; it's a place I was ready to love, and didn't like. It's the cute girl from camp who wore a Velvet Underground t-shirt and made you spend six days thinking you've found the love of your life, and then turned out to be a believer in star signs, a lover of jocks, and a thrifter of shirts with bands she never knew existed. I moved to Edgewater recently; had just spent the longest, most frustrating day begging movers, in languages I didn't speak, to not screw me over as they were screwing me over; ended up carrying most of the stuff myself, and was ready to murder a burger. It was already past one in the morning and when I saw on Google maps a place so close that's open so late - 2 AM - I got butterflies in my stomach. Arrived at the door at 1:34 and we locked eyes: me with my sunken cheeks and sweaty shirt, Moody's with its arches and bay windows and ivy leaves. But the staff was just leaving. They said they were closing early, and told me to come back tomorrow. And come back tomorrow I did. Yet what I stepped in was not a pub, but a parody of a pub, considering its name and everything: staff bored out of their skulls, throwing menus on the table from a distance, parroting their words without intonation or eye contact. I waited for the duration of two gnarly '80s hits till someone returned to take my order. I made the mistake of asking for a recommendation. They said everything's good. It wasn't - but that's for the next paragraph. It took an entire '80s MTV chart show for my burger to arrive. And it was bad, man. It was very bad. It was terrible. The bun was mushy, the lettuce was elastic, the patty had the taste of salty charcoal and the consistency of rubber sole. I never eat fries, but this burger was so bad I ate all the fries. They were alright. Unfortunately, this doesn't end here. Turns out the food didn't just taste bad, it actually was bad. Within minutes after leaving the place I was sick, then bloated, then inadvertently recreating a Jackson Pollock in my toilet bowl. Don't go to Moody's. read more

Nice setting, but it's a little hard to see anything at night time. I'm all for atmosphere, but the lighting could be a little better so I could see my food. My group started out with onion rings, which were a nice size but extremely greasy. Even after trying to soak the grease out of them with napkins, it still reeked and tasted of oil. We also had a pitcher of sangria which was refreshing. Lastly, the Moody Burger arrived and was much better than the onion rings and the portion was enormous! Cooked just right! read more

I just came back from a night at Moody's and I smell like a french fry. I had a veggie burger with blue cheese. It was delicious. The lettuce and tomato were both crunchy and fresh. French fries nice and crisp. Yum Yum. No Coca Cola just Pepsi. We had 12 people in out party. They accommodated us by putting 3 tables together in a kind awkward way by making an L shape, so not everyone had a chance to talk to each other. Service was ok, little slow and the waitress did not want to split our bill. Left it to us to figure it out. I cant wait to take a shower and wash off the french fry smell off me. read more

I visited Moody's Pub for a late lunch. I sat outside on their huge patio. Tons of tables on different levels. Lights in the trees made me think it would look really great after dark. I might go back at night just to check it out. The waitress was nice but not very personable. She did however, offer a drink special list when I said I was thinking about a vodka & lemonade. The menu is pretty basic but tasty. I had a burger and the fresh cut french fries were amazing. The restroom was remarkably clean. Street parking is super easy. read more

Looking for an old-timey rock-encrusted locale to make you feel like you're stuck in some nerd's D&D adventure? Moody's it is. The outdoor spot is decent, but there's a very low-budget air to the place, kinda like you expect the real owner of the place to show up at any minute and everyone would need to scramble for the exits. I'd avoid the interior at all costs, since it is impossibly dark and smells like the open pit of cooking oil that bubbles in plain sight. Service was iffy. We had a large group (a dozen or so) and only saw our waitress every half hour. Her English wasn't so sharp, either. As for the food, the burger I had was merely average. They could've toasted the buns or something. They tasted like someone just made a run to Jewel. I didn't like how it stuck to the meat. (Think burger juices soaking into cold bread.) And the fries were a joke. It was as if someone peeled a potato, fried only the shavings and pitched the rest in the trash. If it's nice weather and you're in the neighborhood, it might be worth a stop after you and your LARP friends have finished a mighty battle. On a beautiful summer night, Moody's will put you in a good mood with a delicious burger in hand. It is like sitting outside in a huge, tree-covered backyard... very casual and plain, but so serene and wonderful. The only downside would be that people smoke and I am so used to smoke-free areas now that it is a bit disturbing. I have been to Moody's in winter where I sat inside and it is just not the same. It is smoky and greasy and dark... but the fireplace is nice. I would only go back to enjoy the great patio. It is the perfect place to go with a group of friends and enjoy some burgers and beer. I tried the blue burger for the first time. (From reading about it in the latest Chicago Mag) I was a bit hesitant since blue cheese can be way too overpowering but this one wasn't at all. It was the perfect flavoring and really mild. Two thumbs up if you like blue cheese. It was a deal, too... $8 for a 1/2 lb. burger with fries. I split it, along with a salad (huge.... and includes bacon!), with my boyfriend. We were both stuffed. It was well worth breaking my healthy kick diet. Didn't seem quite up to the high ratings I once gave Moody's Pub. While our burgers were good, they were not exceptional. Our onion rings were excellent! Service was good but our server seemed a bit shy. While eating outside in warm weather is very enjoyable and it adds greatly to Moody's overall perception and ratings, the limited menu and burgers need to be tweaked a bit. On our way to a show and we were looking for a drink and appetizer. We ended up with two beers and a huge plate of onion rings because this place basically has burgers, some sandwiches and fries & onion rings. The venue was very dark, the tables were close together with little room to move, and the menu had no variety. They had a stocked bar and some decent beer choices. We have heard that they have a very nice outdoor patio for warmer weather, so we aren't completely crossing this place off our list yet. read more

I've been coming here since H.S. In the 80's. Always good burgers. But these past few times we haven't been impressed. The seats in the booths are ripped, tables are sticky. We sat by the window to look out to the patio, window was filthy and cobwebs every where. I went to the bathroom and it was dirty. Dust, floors were sticky, and under the hand dryer was a goop of I don't know what. The service was horrible. I mentioned all this to the server, she could care less. This place has not been a disappointment in all of my years and I am old. The burgers are hearty and cooked to perfection. Simple in nature and accompanied by lettuce, tomato, onion and cheese, they are what you crave. The fries are hand cut and always a favorite. In the summer, the patio is the best place to relax with a drink and burger. In the winter, the inside is cozy and rustic so you will feel warm and comforted against the elements. The serves are usually pleasant and efficient. Everyone I have brought here has enjoyed it, you will too. read more

I love this place so much. Moody's is a simple, dark, neighborhood spot with friendly staff and terrific food. Their outdoor patio space is the nicest you'll find anywhere, lit from above by soft yellow lights strung across the expansive space and dotted by trees throughout. There is no better place to be on a Northside summer night than sitting out on the Moody's patio with some friends and a burger basket. Speaking of the food- it is true pub food. Simple, straightforward, cheap, and damn good. The cheeseburger is my personal favorite, but a lot of my friends like The Moody Bleu, and the steak sandwich is the sleeper hit. The drink list isn't expansive, but you'll get what you need. And while the back porch is the best in the summertime, it's also a terrific place in the winter to sit by the fireplace and idle away a cold night. A few weeks ago my girlfriend and I were back in town from LA and had an impromptu get together with friends, and before we knew it we had about fifty people, all looking to eat. No reservations had been made, and we all felt kind of guilty because that kind of thing can really overwhelm staff. The folks at Moody's were totally cool, took care of everybody beautifully, and made us feel welcome all the way til closing time. Stumbled upon this venue while we were in Edgewater for a show in the dead of winter. Not many food options nearby so were looking for some drinks/tapas. Menu is limited, this is a griddle, deep fry place. If they can grill it, or deep fry it, you are in business. If you are content with beer and peanuts, they have that as well. Wintertime? sit by the gas fire for some ambiance. It is VERY dark inside, and the tables are arranged in such a way that you have to bob and weave. Overall, a different vibe from most places, my guess is you either like it or you don't. The crowd seemed mixed. The good news is at night, the bank parking lot next door provides ample parking in a neighborhood that basically has none. If I came back, I would either beer and peanut it, or beer and burger it. If you need anything healthier, I would keep looking. Based on the pics of the patio, I feel that I am missing out on one of the main things that makes this place. Summer evenings and Moody's outdoor garden go together like a hand in glove. In fact, summer is now the only time I will ever go to Moody's as sitting inside kind of grosses me out. It's dark, smoky, smelly, has poor ventilation and is unbearably hot. I always feel like I need to come home and shower after sitting in there. If I had to rate this place for its interior space, it would only get two stars. The patio, however, is completely different. It's spacious, a little dark, but most pleasant. Their burgers, while still decent, are just not as good as they once were. Their sangria more than makes up for it however. They also have a parking lot and you usually you can scrounge up a coupon in the Reader for half-off a burger. Coupled with a glass or pitcher of sangria, it's a relatively cheap night out. Go to Moody's Pub and get a burger and a brew or a sangria and enjoy one last vestige of summer before it's gone. read more

I further apologize for inconveniencing your humorless and surly waitresses by having a group of 12 people sit around two picnic tables and continually order food and drinks, thereby increasing your profit margin and, were the drinks and food served in a timely manner or actually good, yielding you new customers. I also apologize for my group attempting to have a good time with each other, which you tried your best to stop by asking us to move away from tables and refusing to take any orders for drinks, usually responding with "I can only take one order at a time." Most of the time I went here I was ignored and received shitty service, but the last time I planned to go takes the cake. Moody's is perfect for a low-key, artery-clogging meal. This place is very dark, Viking-beer hall looking almost. Things I liked: - Parking lot! - They have a great blue cheese burger. - The fried shrimp dinner is amazing. Lots of fried shrimpy goodness. I even ate the tails. They were crunchy and delicious. - The dinner salad that comes with the fried shrimp dinner! Never have I seen so many cherry tomatoes on a salad. It had been years since I'd entered the dark cavern of Moody's Pub, empty today because no one in their right mind would have hesitated before proceeding to one of the best patios in the city during one of our most-precious, beautiful days of the year. Plus, if I remember correctly from visiting in the winter, it's tough to get that fried onion ring smell out of a winter parka, much less a nice, summery seer-sucker suit. (I'm kidding about the latter--seer is for suckers, guys walking in 4th of July parades and wealthy people on the golf course who don't need to care...) The patio is really a large wooden deck, with three sections. Old trees sway overhead, and it's away from the street noise. Small, primarily macro-brew beer selection, including Anchor Steam, which was close to a microbrew when I first tried it. I still like it, even with the massive selection of micro-brews today). I usually drink cocktails--prices here are very reasonable. Limited menu here too, but you only come for one thing: the burgers. For me, the Moody Bleu Burger is almost always the one. Today, I went with medium rare, and it was cooked perfectly to that temperature. Delicious. The fries it came with were also excellent. Hand cut, yet still crisp, and with the skins left on. I wonder: if the healthiest part of a potato is right under the skin, is still healthy when they are fried? There's no reason to ever find that out. My only disappointment was that I didn't have someone with me to share an order of onion rings with, and I wasn't going to be a complete glutton. The burger was excellent, though it's not one of the best in town (very tough competition!). The waitress seemed like she had been waiting tables for a while, and she was still sweet and energetic. Sweet enough that when she came back to tell me my card had been declined, she was very sensitive in quietly telling me. The problem was simply that they don't take AMEX, and my AMEX looks different from most. I can't think of many better places to chill out for a warm hour in the Chicago summer. read more

Eh. First off, the inside of this place is a damn cave. It's so dark, you can barely see people. I guess that might be the appeal on a cold, snowy night in front of the fireplace...but seriously, no. It's too dark, it makes me wonder what they're covering up! However, the outside seating is by far the best layout in the neighborhood. Set back from the street, plenty of room, lots of tables. I didn't particularly enjoy the plastic fountain we sat by with its ever running water. After a few beers, it kind of gets....err....distracting. Food was decent, though whoever voted them "best burger" needs their meat card revoked. NOW. They aren't anything better than I've had a bazillion other places. Hmmmpfh. Service was slow and spacey...took eons to get another round of drinks. She wasn't unfriendly, just sort of...apathetic. Like "hey, yeah...I know you've been without water/beer/food/napkins/service for the last 35 minutes, but heyyyyyyyy, life's all good baby." :) So, in closing...I'd MAYBE go back to sit on the patio if perhaps I was like...standing right in front of the bar and dying of thirst.
