What a Chicago hidden gem! I couldn't believe this was so close to the beach yet far enough to avoid the beach madness. Located near Thorndale and Broadway, the restaurant is accessible via Red line Thorndale stop or by bus. There is also a Moody's parking lot but if it is packed, there is always plenty of paid street parking. My mom, aunt and I came here on a Friday night for the atmosphere. Moody's does have an indoor pub but they are mainly known for their outdoor summertime patio. The patio is absolutely amazing- there are decorative lights, trees and just a beautiful atmosphere to hang out with friends. We went a little later in the night when it wasn't so crowded- it was perfect because usually this place is slammed with business in the summertime. I really appreciated being able to speak with my mom and aunt without having to say, "Huh? I can't hear you". There was music playing but it wasn't obnoxious! My mom and aunt ordered burgers and I ordered cheese fries. My mom and aunt also ordered a pitcher of the sangria. I was a little disappointed by the cheese fries because it literally looked like they took slices of cheddar cheese and dumped it on the cheese fries. There was no gooeyness to the cheese fries- the cheese was more taped onto the fries rather than slathered on. I didn't like it because the cheese wasn't melting off of the fries, it looked like it was covering the fries like a protective shield. If you've ever had some bomb.com cheese fries, you'll be super disappointed by the cheese fries here. Stick to the basic- just get regular fries. The have a good food menu but because it was so late, I didn't order a full blown meal. I tried the burger my mom had- it was delicious and tasty. It was cooked just right- medium rare- with a side of lettuce, onions, tomatoes and a hearty bun. I came here last night with a group for a meeting, as it is apparently a great burger joint. The menu was limited, featuring only a series of burgers and fries with a few other dishes. The inside of the restaurant is very dark, which is supposedly their vibe, but it almost looked closed. I ordered a cheeseburger and cheese fries. What I got was appalling. My burger was a typical burger with a single slice of cheese, nothing to write home about and not worth the $15. But it's the fries that are the real transgression. Cheese fries should be crispy fries with a cheese sauce. What they served is droopy, floppy fries with microwaved American cheese slices on them - for $11.50. I don't recommend this place at all. You can find better burgers and better cheese fries elsewhere. Add in slow service with no human touch and it's a no from me. read more

Asked for a craft beer off the dirty menu and was told they were out of all of them. Picked another run of the mill beer and they were out of that too. So I ordered a Sam Adams beer and it was completely flat. Not ONE carbonated bubble in the glass. Zero foam. I have never been served a beer so lifeless in my entire life. Ordered a medium cooked burger and got a rare burger and a dry mediocre bun. No surprise, the cook works under a 75 watt lightbulb. Why? My guess is because it's "moody" to have no lighting. How can you properly cook under a nightlight? Answer -- you can't, it's impossible to cook a rare, medium or well done burger if you cannot see what you are doing. Today I wanted a burger like the ones I used to have at Moody's. The burger and fries were great and as good as I remembered. Unfortunately that's where the good review stops. The place was so dark that the only two "usable" tables were those that overlooked the garden. No lights were on in the dining area. The place also felt not so clean and the booths were torn. My partner and I were out on a walk and hoping to find a place with a patio to drop in for a beer. A quick Yelp search found us a block away from Moody's Pub, so we headed over. Walking up, the pub definitely delivers on looking like a pub--the building has clearly been here for a while. To get to the patio, we walked through the dark inside area where tables were pushed aside for COVID reasons and setup for pickup/delivery orders. The patio was huge and had lots of tables that were well-spaced from each other. The area was bright but had plenty of shade between trees and table umbrellas. Moody's beer selection isn't anything super special but they do have some local brews, including the pitcher of Temperance IPA we got for less than $20. I can't judge the food other than saying the portions looked big and that it smelled amazing every time the server passed by with a neighboring table's order. We'll definitely be back with family when they visit and with appetites. There's a veggie burger that I'm curious to learn if it's vegan. read more

Again, it had been a number of years since I had gotten food from this place. This time I ordered delivery, which of course has it's own variables. I live a decent distance from this place, but still in the delivery area. I won't bitch about the temperature the food arrived at. The GrubHub driver did a great job. He did what I would have done and took LSD most of the way. No complaint there. The packaging was middle of the road, but not horrible. To be honest, I should have asked for a refund minus the driver tip as the food quality sucked. The Moody Burger overwhelming consisted of bun. I don't remember it being like that in the past. The burger also seemed premade/frozen which I also do not recall previously. The meat itself was tasteless and there is no way it was a half pound burger. The bacon was skimpy, but ok.The bun and cheese tasted good though, but if I wanted a cheese sandwich I would have ordered one somewhere or made my own. The fries were overcooked/burnt. The fries were inedible really. This experience might have been somewhat forgivable in person as the delivery fees and driver tip wouldn't have been needed, but for delivery it just isn't worth it. This would not be my go to in Edgewater. The food itself was fine and the drinks were ok too, but there was not a vast selection of either. We sat outside and every table was fairly dirty for only getting there at noon. It seemed like none of the tables had been cleaned from the day prior. Food and drink was fine at best, but overpriced in my opinion. All menus were pretty dirty as well. If they tried deep cleaning the patio space and menus, I would be fine with giving it another try, but it would not be my first choice. read more

Dined inside and it is dark and cramped as hell with all the tables smashed up against each other. Most of the table are four tops, but there is no way you will seat four if there is another table next to you. I don't recommend the booths for dining as the tables are somewhat on the narrow side. Good solid char-grilled burgers with fresh fries. Very tasty and cooked to order. Food comes out on wax paper atop an economy paper plate in a wicker holder; not even a Chinet paper plate. Decent prices for wine and good pours. With the MB bank moving in next door, there is no parking lot anymore. Service was good. Kudos to bus boy as we saw him more than the waitress. read more

Giving it a 5 so people there can keep their jobs but its 2.5 to a 3 at best. Place is comfy durty inside, like that of an old Italian pizzeria only this place no have any PIZZA! So its great for those seeking the hole in the wall bar atmosphere. Food was the biggest disappointment. Fries themselves are tasty basic $2.50 fries you can get at the local Gyro spot. I sprung for the Cheese fries which appeared to have slices of what looked like American cheese on it. Not bad but not the best either. For $9.50 I'd expect better. The lady did warn me about the style but I didn't think it was slices of American cheese that we were getting. Could have been cheddar but who knows. Daughter loved it but she doesn't know any better. Burger was flavorless and ordered medium but arrived well done. Bun was huge but cold so getting through the density was a challenge. There was no one in the bar so not sure what the cooks hurry was. The patties are probably precooked and kept in a hot juice bath. If I go back it'll be for the beer and probably try the Sloppy Joe and fish sammy. I keep walking in and remembering why I walk out the atmosphere is nonexistent, there is no feeling of community or reason to go there on any given day (no specials, events, etc) credit where credit is due, the patio is pretty nice in the summer which is why I gave two stars but the only reason I bother going there is because Rewired had that fire. I was brought to Moody's via my boyfriend and his friend. They ranted and raved about the burgers and reminisced about visiting Moody's during their college years. I was warned beforehand that the service is extremely slow but the food is tasty and the sangria is worth the try. I visited Moody's on two separate occasions; once for just the food and once for the Sangria. The first visit was absolutely terrible. We sat inside because it was a rather hot day. The inside is so dark that I could imagine how difficult it can be to see what you're doing if you visit at night. The service was beyond unacceptable. The waitress we had completely gave up on servicing us after she brought over my food. We waited an additional 40 mins for her to even grace our table with her presence. We would try to flag her down whenever she came back into the inside but she was like speed racer because we'd she her for 5 seconds and then she'd be back outside on the patio. The food was just okay so I was ready to write off Moody's but my boyfriend convinced me to visit just for the sangria. During my second visit we sat on the patio and only ordered the sangria. The patio is very spacious and extremely popular with everyone that visits. The sangria comes in a massive pitcher that's meant to be shared. We were extremely excited for it because it was a Saturday night and I'd heard so much about it. The service gets slightly better when you're outside because they maybe trying to get the tables turned over quickly to accommodate more customers. The vibe outside is totally different from the inside. I would only recommend visiting Moody's during the warmer months because the patio is worth seeing and sangria is always better on a nice patio. read more

Where to begin with this sh*t show? Let's see... Filthy booths and sticky tables? CHECK! Lukewarm pitcher of beer? CHECK! "Food" served on paper plates? YOU GOT IT, DUDE! She got the shrimp basket. Boy. Six, sick shrimp that definitely came out of a frozen box. No different than what you could find for yourself from the freezer section at Target. I got the Sloppy Joe. And it sure was sloppy. Sloppy, tasteless and beyond bland. It's worth pointing out that I don't blame the cooks here. They're clearly forced to work with subpar ingredients foisted upon them by management that clearly stopped caring about the caliber of food they serve a long time ago. Such a shame. Because the patio is nice and the decor is cozy (despite a seating configuration that boggles the mind). But for the $50+ we spent here on dinner, there are at least a dozen other places within spitting distance that'll give you double that for the same money - and provide a much cleaner environment. One of my friends highly recommended this place to me because her and I both love blue cheese on burgers! The only reason I'm giving it 4/5 stars is because it is VERY dark inside - almost too dark to even read the menu. Aside from the brightness, the food did not disappoint! The burger was very big, juicy, and full of flavor. Not to mention, the blue cheese topping was creamy and pungent in the best way possible! This Chicago classic is arguably the best beer garden on the north side. Tons of seats away from traffic under dipping tree branches and strings of lights at night. You don't go to Moody's for much more than the summer deck and sipping some summer beer. The pitcher is one of the cheaper ways to drink in Chicago--as long as they have something good on. For years this place stayed with domestic beers. In recent years they've added a small rotating craft list, but it's not well curated. Today's selection was between Anchor Mango Wheat or Founders All Day IPA. Don't want those? Budweiser and Stella are the fall backs. Service can be slow but mostly it's the management skimping on number of servers: staff are usually helpful and work hard- you just have to flag them down sometimes. Burgers probably aren't on a top ten list in Chicago (despite the menu saying "best in Chicago") but the toppings are typically really generous and you won't regret it. The blue cheese in particular is known for the serious ice cream scoop portion slapped on a thick burger. Nice. Moody's beer garden is a unpretentious summer gem. read more

Stopped by Moody's for a late lunch. My wife and I had our service dog with us and we wanted to sit on the outside patio. Our server said that ONLY service dogs for the blind are allowed at Moody's either inside or even on the patio. My wife showed the server her documentation validating that service dog but it did not matter. We have had service dogs for over a decade and eat out frequently. This is the first time that I have ever been told that a service dog is not allowed even on the patio. I am absolutely astonished that this is actually their policy. Moody's has been one of my favorite places for the past 20+ years. Totally casual, comfy atmosphere with fireplaces in the winter, and a lovely outdoor garden in the summer. Limited menu, but GREAT grilled burgers with home fries, and good onion rings, "sizeable salad" or fried shrimp, steak sandwich, and drinks! Etc. I love their Sangria, and they have a decent beer selection, full bar, and good "pub potions." (In the winter I love their Keoke coffee!!) I bring family and friends alike here, mainly when we want a good burger and to hang out. They also finally started accepting credit cards! Previously, it was cash only. Good move. read more

So the food is fine. But one thing you have to know is that the service will always always suck. They are nice but can't seem to ever get orders correct. For example: 1. We asked for water three times. We only got 3 waters when we had 5 people. 2. We had to ask for silverware twice- which should have been automatic. 3. I ordered the blue cheese burger and was given a regular one. Nobody came to see if our meal was good and the regular burger was fine. This is the REGULAR experience there time and time again. An alright pub. I visited here because I heard that they had amazing burgers at a good price. While the price of 9 to 10 dollars isn't terribly high for one in the city, the 1/2 pound burger and steak sandwich I tried were both on the side of overcooked (I ordered medium rare, was served a bit over medium), underseared, and underseasoned. Fortunately, the other components of the burger (tomato, onions, etc.) were fresh and the fries were crispy with a good strong potato flavor. This isn't a bad place to go if you're in the area as the sandwiches are fairly large but there's a lot of amazing burger places in Chicago which serve tastier food at a similar price. read more

Now the burgers are little less juicy and their Sangrias are a little more watered down. Even the fries need a little more salt. Finally checked it out last night for dinner with my friend. I've heard mixed reviews about this place but regardless of some negative reviews I want to check it out and see it for myself. They're good with enforcing social distancing at the patio area. My friend and I ordered sangria's for drinks coz I heard that they're good. Overall it was okay I wish it wasn't kinda watered down and there's more fruit. I got the cheeseburger for dinner with fries the burger was okay, on the dry side but smothering it with ketchup helped I guess. Ordered a side of ranch with my fries, the server was nice and friendly. Regardless of how the food was I would still come back. So the hubby wanted to go to Goose Island for a beer and grub. I'm thinking parking is a pain in the butt. I really don't feel like doing the parking spot dance on a Friday night. I recall a friend from work telling me about Moody's on Broadway. A mile from home, parking is pretty decent in that area, heck, why not? So I talked him into this place. We get there, dark interior is true except for the light up ATM which was just sitting right as you entered the bar area. I also noticed that it's a little stinky in there, kind of stale and greasy, like they don't get enough ventilation. Ick! In any case, I knew we were gonna sit in the patio so I was OK with just passing through. Servers were kind of in their own world. They saw that we were confused as to where we should go so they told us that we can sit anywhere. We made our way to the patio. It was pretty cool looking. I didn't expect the space to be so huge! Lots of trees, tons of seating for two or three people and larger tables for bigger groups all just interspersed. We sat under one of the trees towards the front of the patio. Very nice lighting compared to the indoors. Little candles on each table for a soft romantic glow. ;) Menus were on the table already and there are only a handful of items. Cash only please! Burgers, steak, chicken, fish sandwiches and a couple of other items. Fries and onion rings for sides. The server came by to take our drink orders but we were ready to order our meal too! Steak sandwich medium and moody cheeseburger medium well. On tap we got a pitcher of GI 123. They also list some tasty beverages besides beer we'll have to come back before the winter sets in. Beer was delicious! Of course it was. Food came out pretty quick. Cooked to perfection with fries on the side. Both menu items were very good although the steak sandwich was super thick and had lots of tendons, I would have preferred it sliced in half to make it not so difficult to eat (my hubby didn't mind it though since he also ate half of my steak!) The burger was really good. Not sure if it's the best burger I've ever eaten but I've been on the hunt for a while so I'll know when I've had the best for sure. Then again, he put A1 sauce on it so it probably killed the taste of the meat for me since I hate A1 sauce on anything! Being that we had a whole pitcher to the two of us and our food was gone so quickly, he was really hungry, we ordered another order of fresh cut fries and an order of onion rings. Both really huge orders. Onion rings were very good with actual onions inside rather than the pureed onion stuffing that some places have and were cooked to perfect crispiness while still tender on the inside (love onion rings!). Of course since our eyes are bigger than our stomachs, we ended up bringing the onion rings home to my family who loved them. Moody's is a great summer place to go and have a sangria and a burger. If your vegetarian or vegan you might be a little limited on the menu. A friend once told me you don't have to do everything just do a few things really good. Moody's follows that thinking by having a rather short menu of burgers and fried goods, and more than a few drink options. Winter is a little tough there as they are kind of sparse on the lights in the pub itself. It is definitely a casual spot to go. As I mentioned at the start they have a large beer garden area next to the pub that is great for sitting out with friends. They have great natural tree cover and the road noise of Broadway is not too bad. I have never gone for reservations, but there might be a bit of a wait in the summer if you want to sit outside. read more

Very disappointed in the changes here over the last few years. I've been a customer for 38 years. They seem to have lost their touch of putting the customer first. Little things speak volumes.. $3 for a little soft drink and no refills! Onion rings are $12 for a small basket, and no, you may not change out your fries for rings. Even ceasing to offer the complimentary basket of peanuts demonstrates the unfortunate changes in greed that has occurred. It's no longer the warmest place in the neighborhood. read more

It pains me to write this review as I have very fond memories of this place. I haven't been in a while and recently while passing the place I thought- 'ah I haven't been here in a while! I should make an afternoon out of exploring the area and have dinner here soon!' And I did just that. The patio is as lovely as ever, and service was absolutely great! That being said the burgers we had were so bad I would have walked away had I not been starving at the time we sat down. It seems that the patties were just not seasoned at all so you could only really taste the bread. My most recent experience, combined with all the bad reviews I've seen (and chosen to ignore) is going to result with no more visits. I have been a customer of Moody's for many years and tonight's visit was very disappointing. Our waitress was horrible. Attitude and she didn't put in order correct. She would not let me substitute a salad for the fries, which was fine, so I asked for the fries to be cooked very well done, extra crispy. She just said ok. When the food came, the fries were not really cooked and both my dinner companion and I did not eat the fries because they were not good. So basically, I spent $15 for just a burger, and yes that was still good but not worth $15 by itself. When I told her about it, she just said it was the cooks fault. I do not send food back because don't know how I would have gotten it back so we both went without. I will have to think twice before I go back again. Sad how downhill the restaurant has gone. They let the platform submit orders but then when you check on the order (as I did over an hour later) they told me they don't accept Seamless/Grub Hub orders. That's funny since you didn't down your restaurant from the app and accepted the order. Don't worry, Grub Hub refunded my money. Stay away from Moody's unless you want to get ripped off. read more
