Whenever we are in Rockport/Fulton, we generally have at least one meal here. The dress is very, very casual - there is no AC in summer, and really no heat in winter. It is right on the water and is very 'rustic' but very popular even in winter. It was a Sunday evening and we had to wait about 10 minutes for a table and were seated "outside" (Garage type doors were closed - so it was enclosed). The football game was on all the TV's so the bar part filled up fast. I ordered a dozen fried oysters and brought half home. My son ordered the Briskit nachos and brought half home as well. My husband had a burger and forced himself to eat it all there! They have a good beer list as well. The wait staff are friendly and attentive. My only complaint - someone at another table lit up a cigarette. Technically, the doors were closed so we were inside and he was very rude to have done so. read more

Moondog was chosen as our group New Year's Eve dining event for 24 of us. I believe we all appreciated the good service from the wait staff. This was the first time my husband and I had been here. It is a very interesting place nestled into the commercial boating area. In our "room", we had garage doors that were opened once the wind died down. We could see the boats moving about which was pretty cool. The decor in this area is nothing to write about (garage doors). The drinks were very good. I had chicken fried steak that was perfectly tenderized and cooked. More gravy would have been great. The asparagus was perfect as it was not overdone. My salad was very good and even had little heirloom tomatoes on it. My husband had fried oysters that were on the small side which was strange as the oyster boats were right there. And they were just on the verge of being over fried with a little too much breaking. His sides were very good. Everyone in our large group was satisfied with their service and meal. FYI, pay attention as the gratuity of 18% was added to the bill for each couple. Worth it. read more

Looks like Moondogs survived Hurricane Harvey, great news for the locals as well as the tourist. All of our party of eight enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Four of us had the fried shrimp with either grilled asparagus, sweet potato fries or fried okra. I must say the shrimp were huge, sweet, and had NOT BEEN PREVIOUSLY FROZEN.....YUMMY! A couple of people had the crab cakes and 7 oz. flat iron steak. Crab cakes were very tasty with large pieces of crab. Being new to Rockport I have heard nothing but good things about Moon Dogs. Tonight I was terribly disappointed. I was seated right away by the hostess but that is where my service ended. After sitting for 10 minutes with no acknowledgement, a gentleman approached, perhaps the owner or manager and asked me if I had been help, I had not. He took my drink order and within a few minutes a waitress approached and took my meal order. Real simple order, a cheeseburger, and peel-n-eat shrimp as an appetizer. After being in the restaurant for 35 minutes, no refill on the soda or water, and no food, not even the appetizer I had enough. I attempted to pay for my soda but a nice young lady at the bar refused to take my money. Service was HORRIBLE. Unfortunately I will never know what a MOON DOG cheeseburger tastes like. I will not go back. It was McDonald's for me tonight. $4.97 for my cheeseburger meal, full as a tick, but very, very disappointed with MOON DOG. The only thing I saw flowing was the beer and wine service to a couple of the tables around me. Sure appeared that those were important, I guess so at $3.25 for a domestic. I am just so disappointed with this place. I had been here a few times around 6 years ago and loved the whole experience from the food to the waitstaff and the atmosphere. We just got done eating here and it was completely different. First of all, we arrived around 7:45 and were told it would be about 15-20 minutes before we had a table which was fine because they were busy. We were seated by 7:55 which was really the only good part of the night. We waited for around 15 minutes before our server even showed up and he looked either extremely exhausted or high. He left and then came back to take our drink order around 5 minutes later. When placing our drink order we said we were ready to order food and were ignored. We received our normal drinks- an ice water and 3 sweet teas after around 10 minutes after ordering them. We had to wait another 10 minutes to receive a hot beer and a margarita on the rocks that was supposed to be frozen. Once we received our normal drinks we ordered our food. The crawfish queso, a chicken fried steak, the Texas shrimp, a shrimp po boy and a cheeseburger. We got our appetizer fairly quick but the queso was barely room temp and the chips were stale. We asked for more chips that were the same. At around 9, our server runs by and tells us he's gonna check on our food, walks to the server station and then disappears. He immediately comes back with all of our food and upon inspection it is all barely room temp. The macaroni with one order was actually cold enough to give the toddler with us immediately. The po boy given was fish and not shrimp. At this point everyone at the table was so hungry we just ate what we had because we were starving. We spoke with a manager and only one of the 2 tickets was offered to be given a discount even though all of our food was not up to par. We would have happily paid the nearly $100 for the two checks however the level of service we received and the quality of the food amounted to around $40 AT THE MOST. read more

The last several times visiting we had to put sweet and low due to the bitter taste. We keep giving them another chance but tend to just go to Paradise Key instead. read more

We walked in and Lisa the manager gave us a look as if we did not belong there. She then asked if we had a pet in our pet carrier. Yes we did. She said we will have to sit outside. She walked us outside and it was really hot in the area where she sat us. Mind you there were two dogs roaming around and ours were in the pet carrier. We asked if we can be seated in separate tables and she said no. Another waitress came out and said let's seat you inside. Lisa ran over and said we can not sit inside. We then decided to leave. My friend's daughter forgot something inside and when she was walking out, she over heard Lisa the manager telling 4 other workers that she did not know why we where leaving that we didn't need to all we had to do was sit outside we didn't have a problem with that but we wanted to sit in the outside section that had a breeze like the other two ladies with dogs that where roaming free on leash and we where told no and our pet is in a small pet taxi . This was the best food stop during my entire trip to Rockport/Fulton area. I almost think it would be worth the 3 hour drive just to come back and eat here again. Definitely need to plan another trip to this are where I will eat here more than just once. I tried the blue crab BLT and liked it very much. I paired it with a side dish of smoked corn chowder. Did we like it? Well we went back twice in one day and that should tell you how much we enjoyed our food at Moondog. We started out with the idea of having a "light" lunch before our whooping crane tour. We decided to order two plates of the small nachos. The nachos were really large (we should have only ordered one) and very good. We then went back for dinner and had drinks and food that was great. The shrimp is the best and the margaritas were good. Had the worst experience here tonight. We were told we had a 25min wait after and 1hr of waiting we finally got seated after being told again and again that we were next and only 5 minutes away. After being seated it was another 2 hours until the food was served. When we asked to see the manager she told us to hold on and did not come back for 30 minutes and when she came we were treated in the rudest possible way. The manager here was the rudest most disrespectful person I have ever met and made our time here even worse. I would never recommend this place and will never go here again. My husband and I went here for his birthday dinner and after walking in, we were greeted by the hostess who seemed a little perturbed while speaking with us about the wait and where we preferred to be seated. While we were waiting to be seated, we witnessed her being rude to other people who came in. She was very unwilling to assist customers and also turned people away at the counter while they were still open. She made it very known she was bothered by all of us. We also had the pleasure of watching staff members argue with each other about who was willing to serve us and the other customers who were waiting. We waited about 30 minutes before being seated and after being sat, our drink orders (2 waters) were taken and brought to our table promptly. Shortly after, our food orders were taken but we waited and waited and waited for a plate of nachos and a plate of fish tacos. We waited so long that we were about to get up from our chairs to leave and go somewhere else for food when we saw our waiter with our food. Our food was cold and we asked for our check very soon after. Our waiter was kind enough to only charge us for one plate and he was quick at taking our orders but we were very disappointed given that we were trying to celebrate my husbands birthday. We would not recommend this restaurant to any of our friends or family. They have obvious staff/management issues. read more

Went to moondog's tonight had the soft shelled crab. I'm 63 yrs.old was born and raised here in Rockport and have never had soft shelled crab. It was really good and grilled asparagus. My husband had the seafood platter which he liked. That being said when we went inside there is no ramp for a disabled person and didn't see any disabled parking spaces either. Some people may say I'm making a big deal out of it but I don't think so. Sometimes on good days I can use a walker for short distances. Today was a good day but I still had to deal with 2 steps. I know your saying 2 steps big whoop but is a big deal if your blind in one eye and go into someplace dark. So yes it's a big whoop. I asked them how some in a wheelchair gets into the reasteraunt and the waitress said we just take around the back or down the 2 stairs backwards. YEP that sounds like a good idea! We took the family on our first trip to the Gulf coast and ended up eating at Moon Dog all three nights we were in town. It is hard to decipher online reviews, this place came highly recommended by a close friend and did not disappoint. If you are a food snob, this isn't your type of place. If you are a regular person, you will love it. We loved it. This is a bar/restaurant on the bay. It has a few tables outside, plus more on an upper deck. Most customers sit indoors under the deck. You walk in to the bar area, be sure to check in with the hostess! Once you do you can pick your table. Several reviews mention "slow service." To be clear, this ain't no dang fast food restaurant. If you want to eat quick, go somewhere else. But if you want great food in a casual atmosphere stick around. The service is not slow, it is just normal (at least to me). This is a place where you can chill out and wind down from a long day on the beach or on the bay. This is a winding down hang out, not a "crank 'em out" place. My wife and I loved it, and my young kids (11 and 8) also loved it. If you happen to have a pet, this is a pet-friendly restaurant. Let's get to the food: My wife said the fried oysters were outstanding, she had them all three nights we were here. And they are big enough that you have to cut them in half before you bite them. I had the fish tacos and loved them. They are served on a southwest tortilla, the fish is wonderfully seasoned, and they come with both pico de gallo and a mango relish on the side. They also come with cheese, which you might not expect. The po'boy was smaller than I expected, but it tasted quite good. My daughter had the fried shrimp, my son had the Plane Jane burger. The burgers are thick and served on a sweet roll, so be prepared (I loved it). The sides are fresh, we were quite fond of the grilled asparagus. The mashed potatos are really mashed potatos, not some powdered mix. I also recommend upgrading to the sweet potato fries. As you can tell, I loved the place, and I'm a picky food person. It's a little expensive compared to food back home, but it is completely in line with prices at other places. Our family of four ate for $60 (before tip), and this included a few beers. This was our first visit here. It was suggested to us by a local who mentioned the food was good and it wasn't overpriced. Since it was just me and my mom, we just wanted a place to relax by the water perhaps enjoy some food and a drink. I have always read and heard from friends that no matter where you go, the service at the coast is horrible. I must say, our waitress was perfect. She was very attentive and nice. We ordered fish tacos and shared it while sitting outside near the water. I'd say this place was okay, and okay meaning, if you want better seafood, I'm sure you can find it elsewhere. Moondog is good though! If you go other places, just be ready to have a good wait for a table and serve. Every place seems to be a tourist trap down there. read more

We try to make it down to Fulton/Rockport once a year to go fishing and we always go by this place. Great place to grab a drink or casual lunch/dinner, especially if the weather is nice and you can sit outside on the water. The staff is always really nice and not too pushy.
