I really do love Moose Cafe. There's just nothing quite like the southern flare, decor, and simple food that gives it such a charm. Their menu is filled with southern staples like chicken and dumplings, meatloaf, fried chicken, bbq pork and country ham. Their sides are plentiful and delicious! My favorites being the green beans, collards, mac and cheese, and hashbrown casserole. Sometimes it's just nice to have a veggie plate. You will not be hungry afterwards, I promise. Oh, and they have all day breakfast. I repeat, all day breakfast! Their pancakes are bigger than a dinner plate and their eggs are nice and fluffy. I'm always super pleased when I'm craving breakfast. Don't forget that you get a biscuit and apple butter just for showing up. If you eat the whole thing, you may not want more bread/pancakes/corn bread/etc. The people here are super friendly and make you feel like family. And for those of you wondering about the COVID changes, the wait staff wears masks, there is plentiful outdoor seating (although a bit too nippy to enjoy this week) and they have distanced their seating indoors. Oh my gosh! Food is excellent and so good! Big potatoes that are hard on the outside, large pieces of sausage and ham and huge muffins. They have the most amazing apple butter which is actually pieces of apples with only sugar, cloves and butter. They sell a jar for $5. Makes a great gift. Advertised special was sausage and cheese omelette. I was allowed to substitute bacon. There were huge pieces of bacon - not bits! Really great, especially for $8.50. It came with potatoes, grits and biscuits and gravy too. This meal could be for lunch and dinner! Coffee was also good. Our waitress was Kendall and we had great service too. First and last time here. The scrambled eggs were dry and had a weird texture. The bacon was so hard it hurt my teeth to chew it. The hash brown casserole tasted ok but felt like paste. The biscuit was good, but the gravy was meh. My husband got French toast and said it tasted like frozen French toast sticks that were heated up. Our server was really nice. They serve biscuits and apple butter as a starter which was dope. They have both white pepper gravy and sausage gravy so you do have options if you don't care for sausage gravy on your biscuits. Overall, the food was good, but we were not sitting in an ideal seat. However, they had a jumbo portable air conditioner next to our booth. So aside from it being an eye sore and a little gross to eat next to the drainage bucket, it was FREEZING. It has been several years since I've eaten at the moose cafe. They have added some outdoor seating and air purifiers since reopening from Covid 19. When we sat down we were served some delicious biscuits with their Apple butter. The Apple butter is really good as well as the biscuits. Most of their breakfast items are around $10 they do have a kids menu. The portions are huge so in the future we might share. I ordered the triad which came with meat, eggs, side, and a blueberry pancake. The Pancake was the standout. They put in so many blueberries and the batter they use tastes amazing. I frequent the Triad Farmers Market but today some friends and I decided to have lunch at the Moose Cafe. The huge biscuits and apple butter starter was delicious. The atmosphere is very country, farm house feel. The menu is country food - the portions HUGE! The food was quite tasty and it was a great experience! Worth a try! Great service as well. I personally had the meatloaf - it was very good. None of us was impressed with the Mac & Cheese. But all in all the food was good. The Moose Cafe has had consistent service and food quality for as long as I've been coming here. Unfortunately I must have caught them during a bad day today. Service was good as always, but the quality of the meal was lacking this time. The fried chicken and gravy breakfast was more batter and crust than chicken and the home style fries which are usually great were undercooked. I feel like this place is slipping a little; maybe because they appear to be doing some renovations or other improvements, only 1/2 the restaurant was open. The main lobby area was very congested, they were taking names for seating and cashing out tickets in the same spot, despite 2 separate people handling those things. The restaurant is unassumingly large - inside and out. It has two indoor dining areas and outdoor seating scattered on a patio for first come first serve. The service is fast, but since its high volume for the servers. They just drop off the food and go. You have to ask for things yourself vs them coming to check up on you periodically. The servings are huge. The entrees and sides. I will say you get your moneys worth but the quality reflects that. Its just okay. I got the chicken and dumplings. It was less chicken than i would have liked with lack luster flavor. I did like the side strawberry but cucumber salad was ok (same lack luster flavor. I took it home and added italian dressing). I told the waitress that I woke up with a craving for fried chicken. She sheepishly explained that the fried chicken was boneless (code for manufactured chicken tenders.) I said OK. The "boneless" fried chicken tasted like manufactured chicken tenders. No okra was available. After eating, I put a $20 on the bill. The waitress politely informed me that she was unable to cash me out, that I had to do that myself. The woman at the cash register told me I had to move to the next register because her register did not count cash. After I paid her, she told me to have a good one. I left a five dollar tip. I expect the waitress was forced to surrender the tip to management. Overall, service: 5 stars. Food quality: 0 stars. Deduction for the "have a good one" crack: 1/2 star. read more

Have you ever felt like you were having a long, super bad run of cards with no end insight, and doubling down doesn't seem a viable option? That seems to have been our restaurant fate over the last 4 or 5 weeks, and the number of total fails at some of our most favorite restaurants is more than a little discouraging. We eat out a lot, an awful lot, and why not - we are seasoned citizens with wandering palettes, and only two very spoiled cats at home. We try to support locally owned and operated establishments, but that is a two way commitment, and I have the sense that some are not nearly as serious about this as they should be, and as we are. We decided at the last minute this past week to head here for a late breakfast/early lunch kind of thing. There were very few people here as we headed in about 10:45, and despite this, the hostess wanted to place us in the middle of the only two occupied booths is the restaurants, I ask for, and was granted, a different location, across the restaurant - not completely anti-social, but what two complete strangers did last night is of very little interest, especially as I try to eat my meal! We sat and watched as four booths were seated and orders taken, and we felt rather lonely, neglected, invisible even. Finally, we got up & ask someone who was wandering around the floor, if we could possibly be waited on, beverages secured, that sort of restaurant thing - and I was assured that could happen, but this person never stopped busing tables, never had interaction with another employee - I became skeptical of any real progress in our pursuit of a meal. We eventually were approached by someone who appeared to work there, and were actually asked if we cared for beverages - we did indeed care, and quickly identified our preferences, less the moment be gone, and brazenly suggested we were in a position to order our entire meal, as well. We were assured that that very order order would be taken as soon as the beverage order was secured, along with the complimentary biscuits, which our late arriving fellow diners were already munching on - no more than 10 minutes later, it came to pass! And after only 20+ minutes, we not only had our beverages, but received some of the biscuits our fellow diners had been enjoying for some time. - is this a great country, or what! Our orders came out eventually, and did nothing to change the downward spiral of this experience. Half of Alice's French Toast was charred black - not edible in the least. My Country Fried Steak was excellent, but the soft scrambled eggs I requested were far beyond soft, and the grits were both watery and bland. In the spirit of the events to this point, it seemed only appropriate they we were not offered refills on our beverages. Whether you stop by before or after cruising around the Piedmont Triad Farmers Market, it's guaranteed you'll find something to satisfy your craving for a delicious southern style meal! The complimentary basket of scratch made biscuits with apple butter is my personal favorite; the biscuits are warm, flaky and HUGE!!! Ask for regular butter if apple butter isn't your thing; they're happy to bring you out some. For breakfast I love their blueberry pancakes (moose cakes); plenty of fresh blueberries baked inside as well as on top of your pancakes. The pancakes are gigantic and take up an entire plate so use your personal judgement while ordering. You can't go wrong choosing your side of meat as their bacon, sausage and country ham are all delish. Their French toast, omelets and biscuit sandwiches are some of my families beloved favorites. The fun doesn't stop because they also serve up a great lunch/dinner with a fantastic menu with lots of southern dishes to choose from like meatloaf, chicken n dumplings, buttermilk fried chicken, country fried steak and chicken livers. The list of homemade sides has something for everyone; I definitely recommend the collards, mashed potatoes, fries, pinto beans, apples, green beans, mac n cheese, pickled beets and coleslaw. Lots of burgers and sandwiches are offered on the lunch menu but their homemade chicken salad is my number one pick for lunch; simply dressed, always seasoned well and the portion is huge so you can bring leftovers home for a sandwich the next day! Seated quickly on a rainy morning before shopping from local nurseries, we ordered and had our food pretty fast. Large fluffy biscuits served with what I'm pretty sure is homemade apple butter are brought out as appetizers while waiting for your food. A generous piece of house prepared Country Fried Chicken, 2 over easy eggs(ordered over medium), and home fries covered my plate. My only real issue was that the home fries were a little over salted. Scrambled eggs were on my wife's Everyday Breakfast and were perfectly cooked! Overcooked eggs are a pet peeve of mine and I cannot tell you the last time a restaurant got eggs right like this. Slightly creamy with cheese on top, these were the star on the table IMO. If you want diner style food in the area with hopefully consistently made scrambled eggs I'd check Moose Cafe out. read more

It's some of the best chicken I've ever had. I come back here for it often, and so should you. I have a long and intense relationship with Moose Cafe. It all began a decade ago, after a concert in Asheville, NC, when some locals told me to drive out to the not-trendy-at-all original Moose Cafe up there, and I fell absolutely in love with it. Now Moose has done so well that it has 2 new locations, including this one in the Triad, which like the original, is at the site of the local farmers' market grounds. The decor of all the locations is adorable, and it's all about Moose and animals in general. Who doesn't love animals. A few months ago, I stopped and enjoyed this wonderful food once again. While it's not quite at the stratospheric level of the original location, it was excellent, with wonderful service from an extremely attractive girl. The food is delicious. Like the original location, the standouts are the Buttermilk Fried Chicken, as well as the Biscuits with Apple Butter. Their sweet tea is also great. I had a Chicken Fried Steak as well, and it wasn't really as good as the other food. Everything such as mash and mac n cheese and casserole and green beans and all their other sides are wonderful. This is country cooking done right. An extremely underrated place. Make sure you try the Asheville location too, so you can help me decide if there really is a big difference. And if I pull my jeans down and show off my bottom to the patrons, as I often do, then it will be renamed Moon Cafe. read more

I've heard people rave over Moose Cafe, so we were really excited to go out and give them a try. However, we weren't blown away. Being a Sunday afternoon, they were very busy. If you can sit outside I would highly suggest you do so, as it was incredibly loud inside the restaurant. The biscuits definitely needed the apple butter because they were a bit bland. The country fried steak was not as tender or pounded as thin as I prefer, and if was very greasy. The cornbread is quite sweet, but it is rather tasty. The meatloaf would have been better if they let the ketchup on top caramelize a bit, and it could use more vegetables and flavor. As it is, the meatloaf is a bit like an onion burger topped with ketchup. The sides were fresh, well seasoned, delicious, and arguably the highlight of the meal. I would eat here again if I were already in the area, but I would not go out of my way to eat here again. read more

This wasn't a great experience. While in town for the weekend, a group of friends and I decided to try this cafe incorporated with the farmers market area. The restaurant enforced COVID precautions so we felt comfortable with the seating since we were spaced apart, and the staff wore masks. Our server was very nice, efficient, and informative, and the food came out pretty quick, but then we realized why. One member of our group ordered the southern-style breakfast that came with fried chicken covered with their white pepper gravy, eggs, and sausage. The gravy was hot, but the chicken was cold. The server brought her another chicken, but it was yet again cold. My wife ordered the omelette, and the egg itself was hot, but the cheese and toppings on top were cold. I had the all you can eat breakfast, but I only ate most of my plate as the meal was bland. The bacon and biscuit were good, but the gravy was bland and watery. One of my friends got the blueberry pancakes, and he enjoyed them, so there was a bright spot there. Moose Cafe is a great place to come and get you some breakfast or lunch. Like others have pointed out, they use ingredients from the Farmer's market they are surrounded by! In fact... the only complaint I can lodge about this place always seems to be the service. None of them seem particularly insightful, you have to ask for everything, and always way after you needed it. The food is good... but not great. Have been several times for breakfast, never actually had a lunch there. But the biscuits are darn near perfect each time, and you gotta love the Apple butter they come with. It kind of gets things off on the right foot. Each time you go though, you can't help but feel that given the quality of ingredients... the food SHOULD be better than it is. Wow! One of the best and most filling breakfasts I have ever had! Went with my Moms on a Wednesday morning. We were greeting warmly immediately upon entering, and asked for our seating preference (booth or table). We chose a booth and were seated right away. The decor is country and welcoming, but not as touristy as Cracker Barrel. As soon as we sat down we were served coffee and two huge biscuits with their famous homemade apple butter- wow those were a meal in themselves! They do offer an all you can eat breakfast for $7.49 which is very popular. However, my mom had the breakfast special which came with ANOTHER biscuit and myself the Angus Skillet- I wish I had taken a picture, but I dug in right away! Delicious- the potatoes were great- not over cooked or over seasoned. They advertise local ingredients and everything indeed tasted fresh. Absolutely the worse service and food I ever had in my many visits. Today my wife and both had place to be and Moose is the only breakfast location on the way plus we both like the food. Well today we were sat quickly and then promptly ignored by the wait staff. My wife got up and asked for a member of management and when the unmasked manager came over she was rude and over talked me and my wife. She also blamed the government for the fact she only had three servers. Guess what several other restaurants have made do with restrictions. This is just unacceptable and note to the manger effective range of an excuse is zero meters. The food was cool and we both order crispy bacon and both got wet noodle bacon. read more
