I've been trying to find a Mexican restaurant with authentic "crunchy" tacos but everywhere I tried they were kinda crunchy and soggy and greasy. Well that changed when I tried Moreno's chicken tacos! They are super crunchy and have a lot of white meat chicken in them with cheese, lettuce and a mild pico de gallo sauce, these tacos are to die for, so flavorful and filling. I'm always in the mood for Mexican...literally always! I had a hankering for a bean & cheese and Moreno's was nearby so we popped in. You order at the counter, take a number and grab a table. There's seating options inside and outside. The place is always clean and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. I went with the bean & cheese burrito and cheese quesadilla (comes in handy to scoop up the beans that pour out of the stuffed burrito....always a smart move in my book if I do say so myself). It was super late on a Saturday night and I had a huge craving for a Sonoran hot dog. This place has a food truck but they were closing up and directed us to their brick and mortar restaurant. They were almost closing as well but they still took our order with smiles on their face. They directed us outside where the guy had a hot dog cart and made our dogs fresh and to our order. He was pleasant and helpful. The hot dogs were good for my late night craving! The only downside for me, it isn't on the restaurant - I'm used to Sonoran hot dogs being wrapped in bacon. You know when you eat a bad street taco, and it ruins your mood? Thats exactly what I felt. The tacos were so bland, the lines were bitter (even though I squeezed 7-8 of them) they were like rotten . Unflavored, and dry meat. The arroz was overcooked and unseasoned. The tosada de ceviche had a nice kick to it and was good to share with 2 people. The sopes were so unflavored and unappetizing after the first bite. The hot dogs were a HUGE fan fave however this time, it was a HUGE let down. No more wrapped bacon, it's now bacon crumbles on top with the frijoles. The drinks were sugary and nothing but ice. I truly feel morenos has gone down hill. Definitely a skip. Sorry not sorry. Service was mediocre, the cashier was attentive and kind. But was handling food at the same time she was cleaning stuff from the floor and bagging to go orders. read more

This place was hands-down the best Mexican restaurant I've been to yet here in Mesa. The ambience was amazing. They had a guy singing pop hits from the 80s and 90s. He was fantastic. The server was super nice and on top of things the guacamole was so fresh and good . The salsa really set my tongue on fire. read more

It was late at night and I had a Sonoran hot dog craving... Moreno's to the rescue! You can place your order online, through their QR code! Because we couldn't find the Sonoran dogs online, we placed our order telephonically. Although you can place the order, they will not start it until you pay (either through the phone or in person). We ordered 2 Sonoran dogs, a carne vampiro, a beef taco, and chips and guac. Bf paid so I'm not sure what the total was but the prices online appear on par with other fast-food Mexican restaurants (Filiberto's, Moreno's, Los Favs). The Sonoran dogs definitely hit the spot! 1 would have been enough but I thought I was hungry lol. The grilled peppers it was served with were grilled well and had a sweet but spicy taste. The carne asada on the vampiro was a smidge tough but overall it was pretty good; better than Filiberto's/Moreno's. I definitely foresee more late night visits! read more

Saturday date night brought us here, to Moreno's Mexican Grill. We have driven by several times and the parking lot was always full. We decided to see what all the fuss was about. I read reviews prior to heading out, and I am glad that I decided to check it out anyway. I always like to give a new spot for us a chance. We were seated almost immediately, in the bar area, as the tables in the dining room were all occupied. Chips and salsa were brought to our table right away, it was nice to see the bean dip as well. Both the red and green salsa were very tasty! Our server, Paola, was absolutely fantastic!!! She was very attentive, even as the bar area filled up quickly. She made sure to stop by and check on us regularly. I ordered a Strawberry Margarita and received an extra glass full after they mixed it. That was above and beyond, as no place we have gone to lately has done that. On a hot summer night, it was awesome to have extra to sip on. Both my husband and I had the same meal, a Cheese Enchilada, Shredded Beef Taco, Rice, and Beans. The meal was divine! Everything tasted so good! It was a struggle to finish everything on the plate, as they were both very full. We brought home some leftovers that were devoured later in the week. The cheese enchiladas had white cheese in the middle, which was a refreshing change from the typical yellow cheese that other restaurants use. We were extremely happy with our entire experience and will definitely be back for more! read more

One of my favorite things to grab when I cross the border is a really good Sonoran Dog. It's nice to be able to drive a few minutes and grab one when I get my cravings. Moreno's started off as a hot dog cart and now have a few locations across the Valley. This location is their original spot and has a nice patio area where they sometimes grill their dogs outside on. Even though they are known for their Sonoran Dogs, Moreno's has a pretty large menu of Mexican cuisine classics, desserts and beverages. They even serve breakfast. I don't like the other chains of the restaurant, I specifically only come to this restaurant since it's the original. I used to live in Mesa and this was always our late night go to spot. They have a wide variety of options but I've never been disappointed with their menudo which was a regular order for me. On some nights it can get a little packed with limited parking. The food is delicious and they also have a Sonora hot dog stand in their patio. You do have to order it at the counter first. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Also, they have aguas frescas and their horchata is a must! I recently called in a pick up order since I was on that part of town late at night and they did let me know that I had to pay over the phone in order for them to be able to actually start my order so just a heads up. The only reason tonight's order garnered a 2 star is due to our previous orders being delicious. With that being said, tonight's order was wrong on all accounts. First off, we ordered crunchy beef tacos and received pork. Not the most horrible mistake, but it goes on from there. The carmello quesodilla was sans queso. I've never had a quesodilla with no cheese before, would that just make it a dilla? The chimichanga had no red sauce, even though that (and extra) was ordered. And, the inside was hollow. It was as if someone hollowed out the chimichanga. And what was there made the once-crispy shell flaccid and lifeless. And to top it off, the soda we ordered, tamarind, turned out to be mandarin. I guess they figured it was close enough because it rhymed... Also, somehow our side of rice turned into beans, which is some sort of Mexican witchcraft, because out ticket clearly said RICE. The kicker was, the beans were old and stale. Yuck. I want to believe they were having an off night. But if you constantly get every dish wrong, that's not an off night. I was calling since 10:30 to place an order cuz I undeserved the close at 11or 11:30 they don't pick up the phone even tho o tried to call many times, I hope the owner , witch I know , knows what the Doing it doesn't look good at all. I have been on a quest.. a quest for the almighty bacon wrapped hot dog or the Tijuana Hot Dog aka Mexican Hot Dog.. these bad boys are so illegal one lady selling them in LA was sent to jail for 45 days! Apparently the board of health doesn't look to kindly on street vendors grilling these on the side of the road. After much searching on the internet for potential suitors for me quest I found this one, Mereno's in Mesa. This place isn't just in Mesa but in the part of Mesa that is well, like stepping into Little Mexico. Its awesome really.. carneceria's, Mexican food stands and of course 2 TJ hot dog joints (the second we spotted on the drive up to Moreno's). Once there we were impressed! With all the buildings around there looking worn and tattered, Moreno's was like finding the Titty Twister in the middle of the Mexican desert, place was hopping! Of course we we're the only white boys in there but hey, if you like the looks of Latin men, well heyyyyyyyy!! We ordered 4 dogs, a cheese quesadilla and a carne asada burro.. oh, they also have Coke and Sprite (Mexican versions) in the glass bottle! Saweet! After ordering we were told that we need to go back outside and pick up the dogs. Strange but okay.. made me a little nervous until we got outside and there was a street cart.. this guy was the hot dog monster! He had 4 made with all the toppings (beans, onions, salsa, etc) but to or disappointment the dogs weren't wrapped in bacon. Apparently the AZ board of health got to this place as well. The bacon was chopped and put into the hot dog boat (bun with a slit only in the center). When we got inside we grabbed a booth and took in the surroundings. This place is actually pretty decent. Super clean, very comfortable and a nice salsa bar close to the counter. They had avocado cream, 2 kinds of salsa as well as cucumbers and radishes plus limes. We of course we to town, I love 'salad' with my Mexican food! Once we were set up we tore into the dogs! They were fantastic.. the flavors and textures were as comforting as they were somehow exotic. Mayonnaise with salsa and bean, who knew? The burro and the quesadila showed shortly after a few minutes. Oh the quesadilla.. super crispy and cheesy! The carne asada burro was huge! Surprisingly packed full of meat, pico de gallo and rice.. Ive never had one this way but I cant believe what Ive been missing all these years! Tender, salty, a little spicy (additional salsa) and slightly creamy as the rice was done very well! As we waddled out of there and made it to the car we knew that we will certainly be coming back! On the way west to the 101 we noticed about 4 different street carts, all serving the same thing.. those yummy TJ hot dogs! Anyone up for a crawl? You can never go wrong with Morenos! Prices are reasonable and the portions are pretty big. Everything is so flavorful and made right when ordered. The salsa bar has everything you'll need! Came here for lunch. Saw the lunch menu n ordered the enchiladas special. The menu advertising the specials clearly shows it comes w sour cream. The cashier and manager argued w me that it was wrong and 2 oz of sour cream is $2 more. NO, ur sign says its included!!! Manager would not honor it or own her mistake. Sorry customer service as we all know that if u advertise something, u are to honor it. I'm gonna go ahead n judge here becuz this place was empty at noon at lunch time. The only reason I refrained from 5 stars is it seemed to me the prices were a little high for the kind of place it is, but you can judge for yourself by looking at the menu. Overpriced for what you get, this used to be a great hole in the wall but like many places it seems it's profits first, while they have improved the overall of the location it seems they are passing on the cost of the remodel to the customers and they don't even have a restroom inside the building. Been craving Sonoran style favorites in the Phoenix area? Well go to Moreno's and you won't leave disappointed! When I visit Tucson I love getting Sonoran dogs and other specialties like caramelos and vampiros but it can be hard to find them here in the Phoenix area. Moreno's offers all the above in addition to your standard selections you'd find in a typical Mexican restaurant. I had a small size carne asada caramelo and a Sonoran dog. I got the agua de sandia to go with it. The restaurant is nicely appointed with granite countertops and neutral beige tiles and stone. There is a salsa bar in the center with various salsas, cucumber slices, marinated carrots, and limes. The tables here are evenly spaced out and eating in was a pleasant experience. The order was ready in a short amount of time. The caramelo was quite delicious. It is very similar to a quesadilla except they use two separate tortillas instead of one tortilla folded. The tortillas were perfectly griddled to have a lightly crisp exterior and the carne asada was well seasoned and very tender. The cheese melded well with the rest of the ingredients. The Sonoran dog was a pretty sight to behold, with the different colors of the toppings surrounded by the bolillo roll. It was good, but compared to some fabulous ones I've had in the past the roll wasn't as soft. The roasted white pepper that came with it had a fiery hot kick to it. I loved it. The agua de sandia (Watermelon juice) was so refreshing with the perfect amount of sweetness. I could possibly drink a whole gallon of that stuff! Service was very friendly with a smile.
