I had bookmarked this ice cream shop for its unique flavors, so I was excited to check it out! First impressions, I loved the decor. It's all decked out in black and white with a really nice '50s nostalgia ambiance. It was very cute! They let us try a few flavors, so that was awesome. I loved the Burnt Sage flavor. It was utterly amazing. They said that flavor comes with a free chocolate dip, so that was dope! I had to try! It. blew. my. mind. It was so utterly good. I'm still dreaming about it. I have a top 3 favorite ice creams I've ever had and ...this is now on the list! If you want to know the other two, it's the olive oil flavor at Salt & Straw in Portland and Goat Cheese Lavender from Sweet Action in Denver. Yeah, I love more unique flavors. I ended up trying the Mango flavored one which I really enjoyed - very refreshing and on the sweeter side. I also ended up trying my friends ube flavored one which was really yummy. morgenstern's is known for having the "finest ice cream" and a lot of people flock to try their flavors. they have a really wide variety (no samples allowed!) and we got lucky because there was no line. there were SO many flavors that you could try, would recommend you look at the menu and pick before ordering because i was definitely not ready and suddenly under pressure to tell the cashier what flavor i wanted in a reasonable amount of time lol. the area is fairly clean with its iconic morgenstern's tiled flooring. i did notice that the spoons they had out for you to grab to eat your ice cream with were dirty with mysterious brown bits on them. literally had to ask the server to get me new spoons my friend got the peaches n cream and i got the pineapple salted egg yolk. i really liked the pineapple salted egg yolk, it was such a unique flavor and there were even little chunks of salted egg yolk in it - score! read more

I love this place. I used to frequent the LES location more regularly when I lived in Two Bridges but now going to the Houston location is slightly easier. The interior is so well-done with that modern vintage ice cream parlor feel. There is outdoor seating at the Houston location but not at LES. Green tea pistachio is hands-down my favorite flavor. I've tried the coffee and a few others but love GTP. The affogatos are really good as well. I have yet to try the pies and am looking forward to that! read more

Incredible array of flavors - some of my favorites that I've tried so far are raw milk and burnt sage, but I've never been disappointed by one. My favorite ice cream in the city. It does have an icier texture compared to van leeuwen and certainly ample hills, but I actually prefer that. Almost tastes a little bit sharper and I think helps the flavor come through more clearly without being overwhelming. This particular location has a fraction of the flavors that the soho one does, but it typically has a much shorter wait (and sometimes no wait at all). Most of the delay results from their 2 samples per person policy, which heavily slows down the ordering. I would absolutely recommend the other location over this one for first-timers. My favorite flavor from the other location is French Fry, which tastes more like a fry than most fries I've had. It's pricey for sure - about $6.00 for a single scoop that isn't particularly large. Much better prices, comparatively, when you order more, so definitely recommend going with friends and splitting. Kinda on the snootier side as far as service goes. Fun decor - very old school parlor feel. All in all, absolutely worth a trip despite the lines. read more

OVERALL/WHAT TO KNOW: -Really good ice cream and lots of flavors to choose from. -I don't think they allow you to sample the flavors before ordering. -Pretty slow if there's a line ARRIVAL: -Came here by myself in August of 2023 on a weekend afternoon. There was a line up to the door of maybe 8 people. -I had not heard of this place, but I was walking by and the vintage aesthetic caught my eye. I looked it up and saw they do cool flavors and are highly rated so I decided to stop in. It was also just a hot day and I was walking around. FOOD/DRINK: -I had the peanut butter ritz bitz flavor. It was really good and unique. It had a really exciting combo of savory peanut butter flavor and salty cracker flavor. There were also little chunks of ritz cracker in it that gave it the occasional different texture, which was also really nice. SERVICE: -The staff were kind and helpful. -I asked the person who was taking orders for advice on what to get and he gave me some great suggestions, which I really appreciated. -There were 8 people in line in front of me tops, but it took about 20 minutes to place my order and then almost as long to receive it. -I felt bad because they seemed understaffed. It took a long time to get through the line and to then to receive my order, but the staff were all clearly working hard. I think they kept running into issues like not having ingredients that they were supposed to or not being able to find things. -I wish there was a water fountain or some way to get tap water. I couldnt ask for a cup because they were too busy. There didn't even seem to be a bathroom. Having water readily available seems essential for serving ice cream because it makes people thirsty and is messy. ATMOSPHERE/LAYOUT: -There is no ice cream display or more detailed menu so you can't see what each flavor looks like or know what's in it unless you ask about them individually. -There is an ice cream shop section where they only serve ice cream and desserts and then a restaurant-like section where they serve burgers and hot food. The sections are roped off and separated from each other, but both were available and in use. -The ice cream section has no seating. It's just one long service counter. You place your order at the front with one employee and then pick it up farther down the counter from a different one. -The restaurant section is mostly just a counter with stools like you would see at a diner or a lunch counter type place. There might have been a few other tables. The counter looks into the small kitchen area where there's a grill and fryer and such to make all the hot food. -The only entrance seemed to be in the ice cream shop section so you would have to walk through it to get to the restaurant area. It's sectioned off with a rope divider. -The whole place is styled like an old school soda shop or deli. It's all black and white with tile floors and the staff wear hats and aprons. read more

Finest ice cream is a title that is almost impossible to live up to, but I will say this place ended up doing a respectable job. What I got: Pineapple Salted Egg Yolk- this was my jam, as it tasted exactly like a salted egg yolk pineapple filled mooncake in ice cream form. I've never seen this flavor at any other ice cream shop, but boy am I glad that Morgenstern's pulled it off. Malted dulce de leche- not overly sweet, and I liked the textural contrast from the malt balls swirled throughout. Came by to rest out legs after walking around the area window shopping and exploring. This was my first time at Morgenstern's, but bae had been before. He was surprised that there wasn't a line out the door (we went in late August/early September) although the weather was extremely hot and humid! There's AC and fans inside, so if you have to wait...it's still very comfortable indoors. They only have a few indoors seating, so large groups beware! There were so many flavors, but I tried the strawberry rhubarb crisp (SO GOOD AND THE CRISP WAS YUMMY) and chocolate oat and went with a scoop of the latter in a cone. I was so sad when I was nearing the end, but I would definitely come back again for the flavors. Bae got two scoops, and ventured to try the durian banana (brave soul)...and he liked it. I just felt like the service, although friendly and smiley...wasn't really as focused on the customer experience as I would have liked. I might just be a picky foodie bish, but having to wait for the employees to finish talking to each other and making small talk in between asking for ice cream flavor tastes isn't really my jam. The line was long enough that I had time to choose what to taste (limited to 2 flavors), but short enough that I didn't have to wait long to order. I found the wait for our ice creams to be longer. There are quite a few dairy-free flavors (labeled with a V or under the sorbets section). I tried the strawberry passionfruit and the sesame caramel. Both were delicious (the latter was indulgently creamy and intensely flavored), but I opted for the lighter fruity tartness of the strawberry passionfruit. The texture was a bit icy (which other Yelpers have mentioned), but it didn't bother me. I rarely get toppings on my ice cream (50 cents each), but adding toasted almonds this time was key. The Tall Man got 2 dips of somewhat more classic flavors: banana agave and bourbon vanilla, with whipped cream and sour cherries on top. He made it disappear pretty quickly. After reading some Yelp reviews, I was prepared for the long lines (not too bad on a weeknight) and made sure to keep the door closed (yes, they're serious about keeping their ice cream cold -- keeping the door closed keeps the AC on). Oh my goodness! Best ice cream I've tried in NYC to date! My friend and I came to Morgenstern's around 12:45pm on a Saturday. To our surprise, there was no line! There is seating for about 10 people and the shop has a clean, upscale ice cream parlor feel to it. I've read other reviews about their service not being the best. However, we were the only ones in the shop so service was fine for us. I ordered a double scoop of chocolate oat and strawberry guava sorbet in a sugar cone ($7.50). My friend got a double scoop of green tea pistachio and Vietnamese coffee in a waffle cone (it was a tad more expensive but I forget by how much). Morgenstern's checks off every box on my ice cream checklist. The flavors are infused into the cream (not mixed into vanilla) and the consistency is smooth and creamy. The chocolate oat is a perfect mix of salty and sweet. My friend really enjoyed the Vietnamese coffee but commented that the green tea flavor is completely overpowered by the pistachio. I do think they are on the pricier side but since this is now my favorite ice cream, it's worth it! One minor thing, however. The worker making my cone misread my order and started putting it in a cup. I clarified that I had ordered a cone and showed him the receipt. Instead of re-scooping the ice cream into the cone, he proceeded to transfer the ice cream from the cup into the cone. It looked TERRIBLE. Luckily, the other worker must have told him that was not an option and it was redone. Thanks to her, I was able to get this beautiful picture! The scoops are perfectly rolled and rounded, they don't half ass it. We tried the: -Vietnamese coffee (coffee is my all time favorite and if it's on the menu, it'll be in my stomach) - Caramel Cinnamon Whisky (not normally a heavy cinnamon fan, but I did like that this caramel flavor wasn't overly sweet. When you enter Morgenstern's , the traffic-filled streets of New York suddenly transform into this quaint, old school ice cream shop. Their "to go" freeze was completely dark and empty. This is the equivalent of being refused bathroom entry while standing in front of an empty and locked bathroom in a restaurant in the city. Capitalist greed. Long story short this place is a joke. They make it hard for you to buy their product and don't give a shit about their customers. I recommend this place to all my friends that ask me about ice cream or dessert in New York. It has some of the most unique and well-balanced ice cream flavors that are not too sweet, creamy, and so good. This location is the smaller Morganstern's, but I've been coming here since before the other one opened, so I kind of have a soft spot for this place. Their selection of ice cream is a little smaller compared to the other Morganstern's, but still nonetheless great. Maybe good for people who are indecisive about flavors. My FAVORITE flavor at this location was the Stawberry Crispy Rhubarb, which they discontinued :( (please continue to ask them to bring it back because I promise it will be so worth it). Came here again yesterday and was surprised and disappointed to hear they took out the crispy strawberry rhubarb flavor. :( was definitely one of my favorites. Tried the strawberry pistachio pesto instead and still enjoyed it (honestly any of their strawberry flavors is going to be really good). It's strawberry with pistachio chunks in pesto sauce. The pesto flavor wasn't super strong- just enough where you can taste it but not be overwhelmed by it. I liked it but liked crispy strawberry rhubarb better- please bring it back!! In terms of other flavors, I also tried the cookies and creme, banana curry, and durian banana. Cookies and cream was delicious but standard. Nothing too special. Banana curry tasted like banana on the first bite with a little spicy curry aftertaste. Was surprising in a good way, if you like curry. Durian banana is definitely durian and banana. You can clearly taste both flavors. They executed this ice cream very well but I'm not a fan of durian (smelly Asian fruit you will either love or hate). I wish I could give this place 10 stars! The ice cream here is IT. Hands down the best ice cream in NYC. There's so many flavors to choose from, the toppings and ice cream are made/miced to order, and I tried maybe like at least 5 flavors from here and I have no complaints. There's always a line whenever I visit (that's how you know theyre good), so be prepared to wait! This place is a trip! It's the smaller Morgenstern's outpost so a little limited on the number of flavors/sundae options. The atmosphere is sparse white but has a 6 stool counter that looks very much like a vintage soda fountain. The aesthetic is minimal and effective. We arrived mid afternoon on a Saturday and waited 5-7 minutes with two people ahead of us. The line grew significantly after us and i could see it becoming a 15 - 20 minute wait easily. Only one person doing it all and doing it all very deliberately. He was not cutting corners or rushing because of a line. I do not know if this staffing is the norm but be aware if you are in a hurry. We had the pistachio green tea and the raspberry cheese cake dips. Both required add-ins and mixing to a base flavor. As much as I despise lines and hype, this place lived up to its and was worth the 45 minute wait on a Friday evening. It was JUST that good. I went with the Vietnamese Coffee, whose extra was condensed milk on the side, making it taste genuinely like Viet Coffee, straight from the streets of Saigon. I appreciated that it wasn't overpowering with sweetness, but still had the bitterness of coffee. I never wanted it to end. My partner went with the limited time Green Tea Pistachio ice cream with came with, you guessed it, real pistachio, which was a treat as well. The flavour was genuine and well-balanced. Although we did not try the creme brulee, they went to no end to make it feel real - blow-torch in hand, the craftswoman burned the top of their ice cream.
