I'm sure Morical House is lovely, but we'll never know. My husband and I were excitedly preparing for our "babymoon" in Ashland, when our cat of 14 years had a heart attack and had to be rushed to the emergency room and put on life support. (2 weeks later, she has begun to miraculously recover but is completely blind from the brain damage.) With great reluctance, we decided to cancel our trip - something I've never done before with a planned vacation. I emailed Alicia and asked whether she would consider partially refunding the cost of our stay (including $100 that we had paid in advance for breakfasts). She was completely unsympathetic to what has been the most heartbreaking situation in my adult life to date, cited needing to take care of her small business, and refused to refund us, even for the food we wouldn't be eating. Summer lodging in Ashland is incredibly busy and in high demand. I'm certain she was able to re-book at least some of those nights on extremely short notice. So Morical House doubled down on their revenue for those nights, and we incurred costs for a Bed & Breakfast (and extra costs for breakfast) at a place we wouldn't be using, on top of thousands of dollars of vet bills. Even our airline, with their rigid policies, was more forgiving than that. If we do make it up to Ashland later this summer, pre-baby, we won't be re-booking here. read more

In short, we have had wonderful experiences at Morical House over the past 5 years, and will likely continue to make this our goto place to stay when visiting Ashland. Alicia runs a great B&B on grounds that is small enough to be considered cozy, but large enough that you aren't bumping into other guest all of the time. While everything is top-notch, I'd have to say that her welcoming nature and her outstanding breakfasts are what keep us coming back each year. She does some really inventive (and delicious) food pairings, and is more than happy to accommodate any food restrictions. As an example, this morning's breakfast started with fresh figs topped with blue cheese, toasted almonds and touch of thyme. We usually stay in one of the downstairs rooms in the separate structure near the rear of the property. They come with an incredibly spacious bathroom, fireplace, small kitchenette area, and a window bench to curl up in. There's wifi and a TV, if you need to stay in touch with the outside world. Or, if you prefer, there's usually a small selection of books to read, should you just want to have a reading adventure. read more

After the other reviews I am very surprised to have such a different experience. Perhaps my review should be taken more as a caution than an indicator of the average experience... My wife and I have just left the B&B without the breakfast we have been looking forward to. It was impossible for us to stay after the way we were treated by the house manager and then the owner. Last night when we checked in, we asked if we could have our dog in our room and were told what we expected to hear: dogs were not allowed in the room. So we made alternative plans - the dog would spend the night in the car with food and water. We went out on to the deck at the edge of the garden with our dog and had dinner delivered - beautiful view of the valley. We went off to our play and took the dog with us and returned about 12:30. We left the dog in the car and headed up to bed. The next morning my wife woke me up saying she had been treated very rudely by the house manager. Very angrily, she told my wife that no dogs were allowed on the premises. My wife tried to apologize for what was clearly a misunderstanding, but the woman refused to hear her. Instead, she repeated that dogs were not allowed and that we had been clearly told this. My wife was shaken up, and since this woman was the one serving breakfast, I decided to call Alicia to clear up the misunderstanding. However, Alicia was just as rude if not more, refusing to let me speak and yelling at me on the phone. She swore she watched us take the dog up to the room the night before. When I tried civilly to point out that we had done no such thing - we had been out at the play - she raised her voice again, "are you calling me a liar?" In so many words, yes I was. We didn't expect our dog would be allowed inside and knew in advance our plans to keep him in the car. If I had intended to be dishonest, I never would have asked. It's always better to ask forgiveness afterwards than to ask permission before. She told me that she had clearly stated we weren't to bring dogs on to the premises. I tried to point out that we had only understood that dogs were not allowed in the room. She yelled at me about mincing words, and said that if I wanted to discuss it with her attorney I was more than welcome. Hence the problem for me: aren't bed and breakfasts supposed to be welcoming? Here I was at a loss - clearly there was a misunderstanding, but rather than being treated civilly, we were yelled at and treated disrespectfully. They would not validate the fact that we understood events differently - even the simple fact that we never had the dog in the room! So a word of caution: stay at your own risk. If you might happen in to a disagreement, you won't be treated respectfully and you cannot expect good customer service. At the end of the day, they don't bank their business on whether or not you feel welcome. read more

Short version: This place is so amazing that it makes me want to edit my other 5-star Ashland B&B reviews (also for awesome places) down to 4 stars, just to show the distinction. Morical house is out of this world. I have had nothing but great experiences in Ashland lodging but, after staying here, I don't think I can ever stay anywhere else in this town. Long version: It's all the little things that make this place incredible - there is so much attention to detail. This places raises the hospitality bar for the area. The rooms: Tasteful, elegant, and minimalist, without feeling in any way sterile. It's like staying in someone's home who has a lot better decorating sense than you do - rather than staying in someone's Grandma's summer home. And the cotton robes are lovely! There are also large suites separtate from the main house. The grounds: Extensive, hidden, and comfortable. There is a large grass lawn with a well kept modern hammock (not a disintegating rope mess), lounge chairs, and space to hang out. There is a deck with patio rocking chairs, more lounge chairs for sunning, and a view of the mountains. At night, there are a million stars to view from the deck. The food: Breakfast was spectacular. The proprietor is a legitimate chef, and you'd pay at least $25 per person for a breakfast like this elsewhere. Day 1: First course - house made organic Greek yogurt with berries; second course: poached eggs with chicken sausage, truffles (mushrooms, not chocolate!) and grilled asparagus over orzo; third course: house made blood orange sorbet. Day 2: First course - cold honeydew melon soup with pancetta; second course: bread pudding with berries on top, and chicken sausage; third course: a "s'more" of thin biscotti, homemade marshmallow creme, and nutella. Breakfgast also features coffee, tea, and orange juice. The little things: There are orchids everywhere, and they are spectacular. There is an extensive (15 types?) complimentary tea bar of Tazo teas, with a hot water dispenser and and ice machine (as well as mugs and tall glasses). This means that on a hot summer dauy, like we had this past weekend in Ashland, you can make yourself giant glasses of iced green, black, herbal, or fuit teas. Delicious! There is also a cabinet of stemware, ice buckets, and wine keys - so, you're encouraged to bring inyour own wine without any of the inconvenience of tracking down the extras needed to enjoy it. The sitting room has an elegant bottle of whiskey and small cups, with a nice note to help yourself. Your room is cleaned while you're at breakfast. There are lots of menus, activity guides, and information around. And another plug for the deck: we took our books out and sunbathed for a couple of hours in complete seclusion on the awesome deck - take time to enjoy the grounds! The service: Alicia Hwang, the innkeeper, is wonderful. She cheerfully accomodated our early check in, offered to help us make dinner reservations, and treated us as her guests. She was gracious and warm, but also left us to our own relaxation. We had a lot of questions for her, because we're curious people, and she was happy to socialize, but she's also very conscious of making sure you have the kind of stay you want. The value: We originally stumbled on this place because it was such a good deal... like such a good deal that we were skeptical. I think it's because it's a little further from downtown and the theatre. You could walk it, but it'd be a long walk - it's only a 3-5 minute drive to the downtown area - a straight shot with no turns, and parking is really easy to find. I also think it's nice to stay a little further out. I can't give enough accolades to Morical House - it has likely ruined me for any other B&B anywhere. read more

I'm torn. On the one hand I want to keep this gem of a B&B to myself. On the other, it's just too good of a place not to say anything about. We discovered Morical House several years ago when looking for a place to stay while we were in Ashland seeing plays at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. We fell in love with place and haven't seen the need to go anywhere else. So many things to love about this property.... - Alicia, the proprietress, is a font of knowledge about the local area, the best restaurants to go to, the best wineries, and all the things you'd ever want to do while staying in Ashland. - The breakfasts are spectacular. Hands down the best food I've ever had at B&B and probably 95% of the restaurants I've ever been to. They serve a three course breakfast! This is not your typical eggs and bacon in steamer trays type of place. This farm to table local fare that is beautiful and delicious. - The gardens are beautiful and there's a deck overlooking the valley that's a nice place to have some wine on a warm afternoon. - The rooms are lovely. We've always stayed in the carriage house and rooms 6 and 7 have fireplaces and window seats. Perfect for lazing away the afternoon reading. - The inn is located a little under a mile from the edge of the plaza, which is a perfect distance to walk off the delicious food you'll have at breakfast. In short Morical House is an oasis, a welcome respite from the outside world. We'll definitely be back. read more

We had a wonderful experience at Morical House; lovely accommodations and ambiance. We enjoyed reading before the fire in the living room, and the grounds and back deck were beautiful, peaceful and inviting with wonderful views. The Asian influence decor is warm, interesting and creative, and very tastefully done! Breakfast the first morning was outstanding! I thought I had died and gone to heaven: The first course was Yogurt with strawberries and toasted almonds. Next came Coconut bread pudding surrounded by fresh raspberries and blackberries accompanied with real maple syrup and blackberry syrup, and andouille sausage. By this time we were 'in the zone' and totally satiated, to say the least. But wait, there's more. Breakfast dessert? Caramel ice cream sugar cone sandwich! Wow! All was incredibly delicious! The perfect food and delightful service elegantly provided by our host Alicia and her able assistant Kyra!! I would respectfully suggest a couple of tweaks: we would have loved to have a night stand on both sides of the bed, and reading lamps, or lamps that had multiple settings, as reading in bed was not really possible. The lamps were quite pretty, but with dim lighting. A shower head with better water pressure would also be a 'nice to have'. But over all, a wonderful place with great food and outstanding hosting - Thank you so much Alicia! We look forward to visiting again! read more

What a great find. Right in town, without being in the middle of things. Amazing grounds with wonderful landscaping and places to escape. Gracious host, comfortable rooms, and the breakfast. Elegant, comfortable, and not stuffy or overbearing at all. Oh, the breakfast. Alicia was a caterer before buying Morical House Garden Inn. I'm a foodie, love to cook, and I recognize memorable meals when I see them. Alicia's breakfasts are reason enough to drive back to Ashland and stay at Morical House. I found this place on AirBnB while searching for a place to stay for my daughter's graduation at SOU. I contacted the host as the prices differed greatly from their website. I merely asked if they were the owners of the property. Not only did I get an angry, offended reply, but they blocked me from the reservation. I replied and said I was new to AirBnB and was wary of scammers. I was trying to protect their organization. I got another angry reply and was basically told to hit the road as they were too good for me, since they have been featured on National Geographic. Must be nice to be too good for some people. Graciously-operated. Relaxed and refined. Welcoming and attentive, without hovering. Amazing breakfasts (kale and butternut quiche with roasted potatoes and cherry tomatoes sprinkled with sea salt--preceded by watermelon, feta and balsamic salad--and bookended with blackberry-Cabernet sorbet with bee pollen). Room 8 in the rear carriage house was spacious and air-conditioned. Well-appointed with small television, wi-fi, microwave, refrigerator and nice shower. Beautiful grounds! (Deer waiting for us as we returned home from our plays.). Small ideas: a small light on the front sign to help guests find you at night after a long day, some side tables near our bed for phones or books, a soap holder in the shower, a real king mattress: two twins pushed together leave a gap in the middle of the "king" bed...) Definitely will be back for the professionalism, relaxed attention to detail, and calm. read more

Great place to stay - very stylish and elegant. However, if you're looking for wicker baskets and lace-filled rooms, this is not the place for you. Also, the owner was not overly chatty, which is a good thing in my book for B&Bs. Do NOT skip breakfast. We did after the first night, and sincerely regretted it every morning after. I am not sure why my review has been filtered, but I find it a bit suspicious that it's almost the only non-5 star review of this inn. Is this business paying yelp protection money? I am afraid this site is becoming less trustworthy all the time, and that honest, detailed reviews are not respected. Still, Looking at the other reviews, I would like to clarify a few things: This is not a 5 star and it's not a 1 star. It is on the main drag, so not secluded from a bit of traffic noise, but it is quite nice and quiet, relatively speaking. Unlike other B/B's, the owner is not in your business every minute. That is both good and bad. Here, the owner is a hermit of sorts, and very hard to reach, personally speaking. She will not speak to you on the phone to answer any questions before. She will not be present when you arrive (even if you are in the proper arrival time frame, she will leave a note--, sorry, I'm not here! ) So... not really a hospitality sort, maybe doing this on the side and arranging her schedule for herself, not you. She will sweep in at breakfast to appraise you and speak to you or not, depending on her assessment of your social status. Well, breakfast is very good, but I don't think it comes form "the organic garden"--that is another clever woo woo. There is a sort of garden-- unless the real one is hidden. The inn is very clean and pleasantly appointed, but don't expect wine or coffee or ...uh anyone to help you with anything. The price I would say is a tad up for what it is, but not outrageous. Nice deck for sitting around on. The temperature of the inn when it's hot is perfect--maintained at about 72 degrees. All in all, I think this is a side business for a clever sophisticated business lady from a big city (I'm guessing marketing) with no real sense of down to earth small town hospitality or the real business of catering to travelers. She doesn't seem suited to the field. An exquisite aesthetic and a healthy gourmet breakfast do not a great B/B make. Sincere customer service does.
