Mosonori was a treat in every single way. Tucked into a strip mall, from the outside it is unassuming- inside, it feels like an exclusive experience. We sat at the bar, where the chef was meticulously preparing sushi rolls and sashimi. We spoke with a woman there who said she had travelled all over the place and had just come back from Vegas and this was the best sushi she'd ever had. It was certainly the best sushi I have ever had. The fish was so fresh- you can see it in coolers when you walk in and you can tell just by looking at it how high quality it is. The Toro tuna roll practically melted in my mouth- it was so good. The crab and Akami rolls were also favorites. Unlike a lot of restaurants these days, which pack people in like sardines, making it loud and overwhelming. Mosonori felt like an intimate and personal experience. I was visiting a friend from San Diego and we came across this spot while looking for a place to have dinner. There honestly weren't many sushi options in the area, but this place looked promising and they were able to seat the two of us right away, so we decided to give it a try. The atmosphere was really nice -- modern, chic, and cozy with a long sushi bar counter. We both ordered the 5-piece temaki set and everything tasted very fresh and well prepared. The yellowtail and Japanese cod were especially standout pieces for me. Service was also prompt and friendly, and the food came out quickly. Overall, we had a really great experience. This was the best sushi I've ever had. I ordered the Aga punch- lavender and lychee with a sake base. You could actually taste the lavender and lychee , so smooth, also such a beautiful presentation! The restaurant is small with a very modern feel; there is ample bar seating and two seater tables with stools along the wall that ended with a sleek, classy dry ager displaying their recently caught fish. It was so neat to see the catches, such a cool touch. The restaurant was clean and organized, natural and mood lighting added to the ambiance. The cigar sized hand rolls were absolutely delicious. The chef prepared everything behind the bar and it made the experience feel authentic. I ordered the 6- hand roll from the set menu; that included hamachi, bay scallop, salmon, crab, toro, and lobster. I also tried the mushroom and Yamaimo. Hamachi- Incredibly smooth with a buttery, melt-in-your-mouth texture. Scallop- The individual scallops were tender and lightly seasoned; they were so cute and tiny! Salmon- creamy and tender; the bright pink was also so beautiful to look at. Crab- very much real crab; shredded, but with a nice crab chunks. Lobster- the succulent morsels in this hand roll took me out of real life and on to a beach. Mushroom- LAST MEAL GOOD. Buttery warm, delicious; delicately earthy with garlic that was cooked, just the right amount- not too spicy, but just the right amount of bite. Yamaimo- The crunch was something between a melon and a cucumber, almost airy. It had a spicy kick. Spicy tuna- I don't even like spicy tuna. If you want a full and unique dining experience, Monosori serves up just that. This was so different from any restaurant concept I had yet seen. They serve hand-rolled sushi, and most of the searing is at an expansive bar where you can watch them make the rolls right in front of you, with delicate care. It can get a little spendy so I think getting one of the specials where you get 4-6 rolls is the best deal. And for the average person you probably need at least 4 rolls to get decently full, for perspective. What's also interesting is that they serve you the rolls one at a time, and you don't get the next roll until you finish the current one. So again, it's a whole experience. Beyond that, the cuts of fish they had were just fantastic. They have an aging case for some of the fish right out in the restaurant to see the craft in action. Every cut was so smooth and high quality. So yummy. They do also have some fun drinks and Japanese alcohol on tap, as well as ice cream that's served in adorable baby cups. Everything was so meticulous in presentation and execution, Monosori does a fantastic job with their brand and atmosphere. I tried sushi I've never tried before and sushi I previously have cared for from other places and everything here was delicious. My favorites were the spicy tuna, yamaimo and the mushroom. I happened to walk by because I had 15 mins before an appt elsewhere. I am so happy I stepped in. I asked them, can I get service quickly. The lady's response was, "yes that's exactly what we do here!" She was NOT lying--- amazing. The decor is brilliant minimalist, but welcoming. Another place we tried for lunch! Hubs, 9 yr old and I saddled up at the counter of this modern, sushi bar styled spot. We were promptly greeted and seated (one other diner finishing up). We were given a quick explanation of the menu and opted to try several handrolls and an appetizer. We started with the tuna tartar, served with a nice soy based broth and those little crunchy balls, delightful and enough for everyone to try! Then the handrolls. I enjoyed the crab, the scallop and a special, an uni handroll (my fave), all were fresh, with crispy Nori and a traditional preparation (read: no fancy addatives, letting the fish shine). 9 year old enjoyed a soft shell crab and a salmon handroll. No stranger to sushi, but her first hand roll experience, she was a fan, and enjoyed drawing on the placemats too. Hubs had 5 handroll set, he said the crab was his fave. I absolutely love Mosonori! It is an intimate feeling handroll bar. No reservations here - I've always walked in and have had no issues getting seated. I've been to both Winter Park and Sand Lake but this review is specifically for their Sand Lake location. I absolutely love the people who work there! From the host, to the servers, chefs, and management. They are all elegant and very friendly! They have set menus you can choose from or you can also pick your own hand rolls from a list. They have a rotating special handroll that I always end up ordering. I typically go for a tasting like one of the ones in the photos and 5-6 hand rolls. You don't think it will be enough but trust me. It is. Being that it is a handroll bar, they do time out when they give you the next piece and go around the bar to serve everyone and then rotate back to you. Keep this in mind as there are instances where there are multiple groups and you'd have to wait for your next roll for 10 or so minutes. Personally, this gave me good timing as I could finish my handroll and then eat the next one fresh. Their fish is so fresh and I love the sauces they use. I tried 5 handrolls which had enough flavor on it's own and no need to dip in soy sauce but adding a drop or 2 of the lefover pinzu uuzu oil from the hamachi made my shrimp handroll perfect. Only let down during my meal was the side of pickled ginger that i found inedible with the earthy taste simular to the smell of soil and the softserve was on the icy than creamy side. Mosonori is a Sushi Handroll restaurant in a shopping center on Sand Lake Road. It's a small place with about 20-30 seats around a bar and then small 2-seat tables in the alcoves. It has a very clean, very minimalist vibe. They don't take reservations so we arrived on a Saturday night right when they opened and we were seated on stools at the back of the bar. Everything happens around the bar, with the servers taking food and drink orders as well as the chefs preparing the Handroll and tastings. We came to Mosonori because it was listed as one of the Bite30 restaurant participants and we asked for the Bite30 menu (3 courses for $38). For my first course, I chose a Hamachi Tasting which is thinly sliced yellowtail in a delicious ponzu based sauce. The fish was super tender and it was a great way to start our meal. I also ordered a Funaguchi Sake, which is a cold sake in a small can. It was bright and crisp but it was strong at 19% alcohol content! Next, we could choose 5 Handrolls and I chose Shrimp, Crab, Salmon, Hamachi, and Bay Scallop. They were all delicious with different accompaniments with the rice inside and then wrapped, cigar shaped, in dried seaweed. I probably wouldn't get the crab again and it tasted just like a regular crab salad to me while the others were really spectacular. Each Handroll is made individually and placed in front of you, omakase style. Finally, we got the one dessert on the menu, soft serve ice cream, with miso caramel sauce. Mosonori is a fantastic date spot: aesthetic, modern, minimal, and thoughtfully laid out so you can easily discuss each "course." If you're a fan of Kabooki or Chef Moso, this is a can't-miss. While the hand rolls are the main attraction, don't sleep on the hamachi tasting or toro tartare--both have the perfect balance of acidity and contrasting textures that really elevate the experience. They have very few tables, it's mostly bar seating, and I think that really works for the style of service. Their menu is all sashimi and hand rolls. They gave us paper menus to fill out what we wanted. I got 5 hand rolls and it was the perfect amount for me. I got a bay scallop, a hamachi, a salmon, a toro, and an akami. All of the hand rolls were made to order, so they were super fresh. I think that the hamachi was my favorite, but they were all very good. I been wanting to try this restaurant in Winter Park when it opened over there last year. When I found they were opening one in Dr Phillips, I just had to come. I called last week, but was told they were only opened to VIPs that time, and told me I could visit during their soft opening a week later. I visited today and I am so happy I did. When I entered, I was greeted by the hostess, who seated me near the entrance. One of the chefs greeted me and informed me of the menu, and that they were still waiting on the liquor license. So no alcohol was offered. No worries as I decided on their 6 handroll set menu (40 dollars). It was about a 47 dollar value as it included yellowtail, bay scallop, salmon, crab, toro tuna, and lobster. Each came at a reasonable time and only after I finished the previous sushi, so there was no rush at all. I must say all of the sushi tasted fresh and felt like it directly came from Japan's ocean. There was an ample portion of fish and rice rolled in the seaweed. The seasonings as sauces helped enhance the flavor of each fish, and adding a bit of wasabi even increased it more. I savored each bite of every sushi. While every sushi was amazing, my favorite might be the crab as it was lump meat with the yuzu bringing the flavor that I couldn't resist. The lobster and scallops were tied for second, but I might be biased as I love shellfish. I am glad I ate slowly as each sushi were done in a couple bites, but my belly was satisfied after eating them all. I wish they had dessert as well, and their liquor drinks, but the sushi worked perfectly. The service was very professional, quick, and helpful. Even though I was in and out within an hour, I didn't feel rushed at all. While the restaurant was small with only about 31 seats in the large bar area, it didn't feel cramped. That's probably because it wasn't crowded when I arrived, and got seated immediately. The music was pretty loud, and it was playing hip and trendy lounge music you normally hear at upscale hotels. I must say for the price paid, this was well worth it. Even though they are a bit expensive, for the high quality sushi you are getting, it is a great value. I should have known the quality would be amazing as this is owned by the same people who do Kabooki Sushi, one of my favorite sushi restaurants. And they were so nice to even give me a 10% discount because I love Kabooki. This is located at the fountains of Dr. Phillips, and close to Vines Bar and Grill. Parking can be a bit difficult during the weekend, but you should still be able to find some in the back. If you are looking for high quality sushi hand rolls, don't even wait for their main opening and just visit this place now! read more

I'll start this review by saying the food here was excellent and our server was also attentive so in general I'd like to go back. That being said we had a totally bizarre experience with manager Abby. My wife and I brought my older parents on a Thursday night and my mother had pretty strict dietary restrictions so we asked if she could order a bowl of rice while the rest of us enjoyed sushi. The woman at the front said no, we only serve hand rolls. I said yes I understand but presumably one of the ingredients in a hand roll is rice, and we'd appreciate if you could simply put some in a bowl for my mother while the rest of us order a full meal. Answer still, "No we only serve hand rolls." I didn't realize she was the manager, so I figured once we started ordering they'd be able to accommodate our request, especially since there were like three other people dining in the entire restaurant. We asked our server who said sure, I don't see why that would be a problem, which is of course the normal and rational thing to respond with. I said oh, I was worried because the woman at the host stand said that you wouldn't do that. That's when I discovered that she was in fact the manager and when the server once again asked if they could take a scoop of rice out the large rice cooker that was front and center behind the sushi bar and place it in a bowl instead of a wrapping it in seaweed with fish, the answer was of course "No". My mother didn't want to upset anyone so she went next door and grabbed a piece of bread from the pizza place while we finished our dinner. The restaurant was so empty that the manager spent the whole meal behind the bar joking around with the chefs who had nothing to do, but obviously couldn't be bothered to disrupt this well oiled machine to accommodate a simple and reasonable request. I get that you want to be a hand roll only place, and don't get me wrong, the food is excellent. That being said we'll never be back because that type of arrogant service is beyond absurd and this manager Abby should have no place working in the hospitality business. To update this review to respond to the owner's reply: We eat at kabooki frequently and have since the day it opened in Dr Phillips as well as at the original location. I know what a "poke bowl" is. That is absolutely not what we were asking for. We were very clear that we simply wanted a plain bowl of rice as my mother couldn't eat fish. My sister was familiar with this restaurant at a different Orlando location, noting to me that this a really interesting hand roll sushi restaurant. The restaurant has a long bar with a bunch of comfortable stools and a few small tables on the back wall. It's a bit of a small place but creates a nice intimate environment. The menu has several pre fixed roll menus as well as a la carte. We both opted for the 4 roll pre fixed and added on 1-2 rolls each. The rolls aren't sizable but the quality is GOOD! The fish is very fresh and everything is obviously made to order. It's served omakase style one roll at a time, which makes for a nice pacing and a fun experience. We loved everything, our favorites were the hamachi, toro, crab, and eel! The only one that we didn't care for was the Suzuki.
