I have been a fan of Moulin ever since they opened their first location in Newport Beach. Recently, I visit the Laguna Beach location more frequently. It is a breadth of fresh air as far as authentic French food is concerned, as there are very few places in OC (or even in California, for that matter) that serves good quality Parisien cuisines at a very reasonable price. French staples such as croque monsieur or madame are always great, as are their crêpes. I particularly like their crêpe complete which is filled with delicious, diced ham, emmantel cheese, Béchamel (a creamy white sauce) and topped with a sunny side up egg. My other favorite food when I have a hearty appetite is poulet frites - a half roasted chicken with fries and a side salad. Moulin always does a perfect job with their chicken, which is served with the most delicious "au jus" or chicken gravy. One of our favorite places in Laguna for brunch! This little gem looks packed, always. But don't leave! Enjoy the time in line to peruse the menu. We always go with the veggie omelette and an almond croissant. You will never regret the croissant. The omelettes are served with a lovely side of lightly tossed fresh greens. On Monday I visited Moulin for brunch. It's a cute little French bistro with red umbrellas and outside tables they have homemade bread and pastries, I had a hard time making a decision on what to eat everything looked delicious. I ordered a croque monsieur that came with an arugula salad with a delicious vinegarette 10/10 I also ordered an iced macchiato and an almond croissant that were divine. The food was delicious, hot sandwich and very fresh salad. The lemon tart and mille feuille were fantastic ! The order for 3 lunch items did not come out together though. After lunch, we saw the sign in the window that said during construction, they will provide a free drip coffee per person with a $20 order before tax. We had a $65 order and asked for 2 drip coffees. Three staff members said no, it's one coffee for each receipt, NOT per person. We ultimately asked for 2 cups with the one coffee and left very frustrated. I ordered a mini croissant, mini apricot danish and a madeleine. The best tasting one was the apricot danish, it was buttery, mildy sweet. The croissant was very dry and chewy, it was early in the morning so it should've been very fresh right? The Madeline was ok, kind of dry also. Decor and ambiance of this bakery was very cute. Moulin is such a beautiful spot! We were planning on eating at one of the beachview restaurants, but stumbled on this gem and decided to grab some sandwiches to eat on the beach! There are lots of beautiful shaded outdoor seatings so we also ordered the tropezienne slice, chocolate croissant, madeleine, and a cappucino to eat while there. The staff was very friendly and when we asked for recommendations, she highly recommend the tropezienne slice and chocolate croissant (one of the baker speciality pastries according to the staff- so if you see the chocolate croissant, I'd take it!) Our lunch experience in Laguna Beach was very negative. I had a lot of questions regarding the menu since I don't eat ham and wondered if substitutions could be made. All requests were denied while no other suggestions were made. Ultimately, while placing the order, 3 orders were mistakenly placed for two people in addition to our two pastries. We were talking and didn't notice the error when paying only when three things were delivered to our table. They were not delivered together so we couldn't eat together and both of us have our food be warm. The mistaken order was delivered first, so I began eating it only to have the correct item delivered a few minutes later. We didn't say anything, not wanting to create a fuss. We noticed the sign on the door that said free coffee, limited to one per person per visit. We were not offered this when we ordered, so we went back to the counter, only to be told we could get only one coffee, despite just spending $65 and being two people in our party. Even after pointing out the sign said "per person" they refused. The servers were all very rude and unappreciative of the business, throughout the visit. The saving grace was that we sat outside in a beautiful setting and the food was delicious. Too bad it was ruined by poor communication and snotty employees. I know you're trying to be French, but I know them to be very gracious people and I was never treated this way during my two weeks in France last year! read more

We got the latte ($5) , coffee ($3),French onion soup ($9), ham sandwich on baguette ($14), and mousse cake ($8). Although it's pricy for breakfast, you pay for the quality. The good: Oui, oui, oui! This place was pure perfect! It was our first stop during our first trip to Laguna Beach. It's location is wonderful because it's walking distance to the main beach and it's centrally located in a very walkable area with lots of other restaurants and boutiques. I loved the food offerings and also loved the ambience and decor. I tried a smoked salmon sandwich with avocado, a canele, a hot dog pastry for the toddler and an a slice of tarte tropezienne. The tarte tropezienne (brioche bread with cream in the middle and orange zest with Grand Marnier) was our favorite! It was 100% up our flavor palette. It had a panettone flavor with the almond extract and the cream inside was light and not too rich or sweet. I've never had this pastry elsewhere before and I definitely would love to eat it again. They have outdoor seating under the overhang but also in a parklet. It's a great space to people watch or to meetup with a friend. There's also indoor seating (where we sat). I really loved the packaged offerings and drinks as well. I was impressed they had Orangina! Fun fact: this is Mandy Moore and my mom's favorite drink. They also had packaged madeleines and freshly made madeleines too that were larger than your average ones. They also have salads, crepes, and breakfast items like omelettes. I loved the French cafe chairs that were more detailed than the average with the scalloped shape and various colors. I liked the vintage-style French art posters with the clown (my toddler's favorite). I liked that the hot dog pastry came with Dijon mustard as well as mayo and ketchup. It was also heated up and brought out to our table for us. The bad: I wish they were closer to my house. I'd absolutely order cakes from here. A drunk guy came in to the register and harassed the French worker woman and subsequently got arrested or in some sort of trouble with police. The interesting: They have 6 SoCal locations. My mom also makes caneles. The ones here were sweeter and more rum-tasting than my mom's. They offer catering and party trays. read more

I was looking for a coffee shop on Thanksgiving day, and this was one of the only spots open in the area. The reviews and pictures looked good, so I came to check it out. I ordered a cappuccino, eclair, and Millefuille (probably spelled that wrong). Overall, service was great. The person taking our order was polite and explained the different pastries to us and was very patient with all the customers. The woman who handed us the pastries and coffee asked if we needed a bag and even placed it in there for me when she noticed my hands were full. The coffee just tasted like hot water. There was so coffee flavor. It was extremely crowded inside, which could explain why coffee was rushed out and didn't taste good. The eclair was extremely dry, but the filling was delicious. The millefuille was the star of the show. Overall, service was the highlight out my visit, but I don't expect to be back since 2/3 of my order was pretty disappointing. My review reflects this location in Laguna Beach on Main Street. First Impressions: (5) I don't live in Paris but this is about as close as I can get to a Paris experience here in Southern California. The restaurant has an outdoor seating area with an outdoor street patio feel. There are all kinds of interesting people who walk by as you sip your delicious cappuccino and butter croissant. They play French music and display French art on the walls. You can't get any better. Service: (3) One must stand in line and wait until you get to the register to order. On the positive, you get to stare at the wonderful pastries. The line is usually very long. The service is what you get at Starbucks. There is no tip involved. Food Taste: (3) We had omelettes and a quiche. The food was simple and authentic. I find it a bit bland and lacks creativity. Fresh avocado and a nice cream sauce would elevate the omelettes to five stars, but as it was delivered, it was bland and ordinary. Food Freshness: (4) We loved to fresh pastries and bread. Each meal came with a small salad that had no dressing or croutons. Just looking at freshness, everything is made fresh. Food Value: (3) Remember that nice view and atmosphere, well, you pay for it with the food prices. For three small breakfast meals, and one coffee, our bill was more than $60. Best croissants outside of Paris! There are several locations, but I love downtown LB. Lots of paid parking, boutiques, and of course the beach! My go to is a plain croissant and Americano, my husband likes the almond croissant. I took my sister's family from San Diego here when we met up. She tried the baguette sandwich, very close to what I tasted in France. It would have been near perfect if it was defrosted a little more.
