It's the details that set a place like this apart from the rest, an even the sugar cube they placed next to the cappuccino was imported from France! I came here on a Saturday morning around 10 or 11am for a quick breakfast with my cousin before walking the downtown area. I had a mimosa and the quiche and my cousin had the veggie omelette. It's a tiny spot with not enough seating for the amount of people that seem to frequent the location. I was actually surprised at the LACK of cafes/restaurants in the area, so that's probably why this place is so crowded. It's counter service, so you have to wait in line to order and then they give you a number and bring it out to you. I will say once we got through the line, the food came out fairly quickly. The quiche was fine, not amazing, but not bad and the omelette was the same.I thought it was odd that these breakfast plates came with a side salad...nothing says salad like 10 in the morning! It was a little overpriced for the portion sizes, but again, supply and demand--I wish there were more restaurants and fewer clothing boutiques with $200 T-shirts LOL. Later in the afternoon I stopped by again to get a cappuccino and it was pretty good (the line was also shorter in the late afternoon). This place was cute and everything was good enough, but it's nothing to necessarily rave over. read more

I am a local residence in Laguna and I rarely write reviews unless I absolutely love a restaurant or a wonderful unique experience. Today i decided to write a not so nice review. Strictly because of service and business skills. Consistently the service here is so terrible, I would say perfect French service. Rude, slow, difficult and expensive for what you get. Salads are $14.00 to go and the dressing is so skimpy it barely covers the top of the salad. If you order to eat in house from menu the service again slow and expensive. I recommend this place only if you have patience and don't mind rudeness, slow and overpaying. read more

UPDATE; So the owner Laurent decided to respond to my review (see below). His/her response highlights the type of snooty subpar service you will receive at Moulin. Instead of looking to improve it seems Laurent knows everything all ready. And to answer your question Laurent; no, I did not see the french "chill pills" at the front. I was too busy getting jostled and bumped by frustrated customers hovering over the poorly thought out tables while waiting in line for the disappointing food to really notice anything else. As locals, one of our absolute favorites for casual outdoor dining. The small patio is fabulous for people watching in the heart of downtown Laguna. (It's particularly fun on the rare occasion when it's raining). We typically enjoy the quiche, omelets, the freshly made sweet & savory crepes made in view & the French onion soup - let's not forget the Sancerre & mimosas - & coffee. ***Laurent*** No one had a bad day...;) nice try I was on a quick lunch break and out of all the choices in Laguna I chose your place.... and yes I did say something....I called when I got home from work and the girl who answered said "you should have read the sign" and "oh well sorry...." there was no sign just a small sign that said boxed salads I saw from a distance (since I thought I could order a vegetarian quiche to warm up at home) so no it wasn't that visible and why would I think there would be bacon in something that is usually a vegetarian dish.....I usually get that at Pascals so I didn't think to ask does this have bacon!..... Oh well like I said maybe next time came in for some quiche but being a vegetarian I thought they might have spinach or tomato quiche. Nope...Only ham and cheese....so I ordered the lentil salad, my next go to healthy lunch. Had to throw the whole thing away. You can't just make a healthy lentil salad without putting thick chunks of fatty bacon???? Ugghhh I even tried picking a few pieces but the whole thing tasted and smelled like bacon.... I am French and have been living in the US for 5 years now with my American husband (we met in France). I am currently pregnant with our first child and the beginning of the pregnancy has been particularly rough on me (hello morning -hum- all day sickness!) Today I felt a little bit better and my husband brought me to Moulin for the first time, where he'd been before, hoping I would like it and it would bring back some of my appetite. I must say Moulin exceeded all my expectations! Everything looked good and well presented. I had a vegetable friand and the pastry was buttery, the vegetables were well seasoned. It was DELICIOUS! Then I had a Madeleine and I almost cried as it reminded me of the good madeleines I used to eat back in France! I also got a croissant but didn't eat it yet. Yelp led us to this place and I must readily admit the food was great and made us super happy. It was fresh, not too filling and had a very distinct Parisian flair. That being said, I debate giving three stars or four...the wait time is horrible and they messed up our order twice! There isn't much seating and you may end up sitting next to the refrigerator. But all that being said, during our short stay in Newport, we went back twice because the food was excellent and worth putting up with the wait, messed up orders and bad seats. This is a very cute sweet cafe, however, was not warned my salmon and salad was going to take 20 minutes. I thought they had forgotten about me and I had to walk up and ask where it was. The salmon was very very over cooked and still had the skin on it. This picture is after I removed the skin. I have eaten here several times, but always in the afternoon so can't comment on breakfast. The sandwiches are delicious, with fresh-tasting fillings and wonderful bread. The poulet et frites (I think I got that right - roast chicken and fries) are yummy. As for the pastries, the Tropizienne is a slice of heaven. I am also quite fond of the almond-pear tart. All the croissants are delicious, of course. The folks behind their counter are very nice and tolerate my pronunciation very well. -- Update: Tried the Croque Madame. Found this gem by accident. I needed to get some work done and wanted a place to hide, but was too lazy to make the journey to Starbucks a few blocks up. I stumbled on Moulin, which was reminiscent of a modern, authentic French bistro cafe. I had a cafe latte which was rich and perfect (the first test). 10 minutes later I ended up going back to the counter to get a sandwich. All the sandwiches looked delish -- the ham and butter, pate, saucisson cornichons, chicken pesto, everything! I got the tuna sandwich and it was on point. Exactly what you get in Europe. The bread wasn't heavy (and honestly it made the sandwich!) and the tuna didn't have all that gross mayo on it. It was topped with red onions, lettuce, and slices of hard boil egg. So simple, so perfect. The attentive service is the icing on the cake! All the pastries looked heavenly too. I'll have to come back for the sweet treats. Merci Moulin! read more
