Far exceeded expectations! Bumped into this sushi shop while hunting for restaurants on main street Breckenridge. Didn't expect fresh fish or sushi masters in this high altitude mountain area. However, the chef rocked. The sushi was very good: fresh fish (even uni) and high quality sushi (fish wraps rice well). I would put 4 stars if it is another sushi shop in the city, the wait time is a bit too long, salmon sushi was ok, and I didn't expect omakase to come out all in one plate. This is one of the best sushi in Colorado. The quality of the fish is indicative on how it melts in your mouth. There is no gummy or chewy fish bites. The chef is amazing. Don't forget to send compliments to the chef. Customer service is impeccable. The wait staff takes care if each and every one of their customers. Packed with diners, the wait time is easy. I never thought that I would have one of my better random sushi experiences in a place that is far from any water nor a place known for its sushi. Being one of the only Sushi spots in town, this place does seem to get crowded, and has limited table seating, so it is usually good a idea to plan accordingly if you want sushi in town. In order to avoid the long wait my friend and I decided to sit at the bar, which turned out to be a much more enjoyable experience, especially with only 2 people in our party. The food: -Tom yum soup was perfectly balanced between spicy and refreshing. Really hit the spot during one of our colder nights in Breck. -The sushi was all super fresh and the rice was the perfect amount of firm (not too dry not too soft). Prices were a bit steep for the sushi considering where we were but at the same time expected since they were the only sushi spot in town. Solid sushi and great service. This place was on recommendation from a waitress at another restaurant in Breck, so we figured it must be pretty good - and she was right! We stuck to mostly traditional rolls and miso soup, but all tasted great and tasted fresh. I'm sure if you're more adventurous with other specialty rolls or sushi features, they'd be good too. Server was helpful with the menu, and happy to make a few recommendations with roll ingredients we did not favor. They also had plum saki, which I highly recommend. Given all of the sushi restaurants I've been to on both the East and West Coast over the years, I know it's a bit ironic (not to mention strange) that my two favorite sushi spots in the U.S. happen to be in Austin, TX and Breckenridge, CO -- but it's 100% true. Uchi (in Austin) doesn't need me to sing their praises as there are about a million other people that have/will/do. But I think Mt. Flying Fish could maybe benefit from my review. The problem is that if you are from a truly great food town like LA, Portland, Seattle, New Orleans, Chicago, Charleston, New York, etc. you'll probably find the food in Breckenridge to be fairly mediocre (with a few notable exceptions). So, when you hear about amazing sushi in Breckenridge, you'll probably just roll your eyes (or worse) -- but again, it's 100% true. We come every single time we're in town (sometimes multiple times) and the fish is always exceptionally fresh and delicious. Everything else on the menu is top-notch as well (tempura vegetables, shitake and tofu miso soup, grilled yellowtail neck are some particular standouts). The owners (who are almost always there) obviously have decades of experience in the sushi business, and take great great pride in their restaurant. The staff is always incredibly friendly, helpful, and welcoming (especially Hamtpon and Aaron) -- and you see the same faces working there year after year after year, which is always a great sign in a ski town. Mt. Flying Fish is really one of our favorite things about Breck -- and we hope we'll be able to enjoy it for years to come. read more

This is the best sushi I have eaten. Quality of the ingredients is fresh. Portions are filling. The hand roll was perfect- the filling, in my case smoked salmon, was distributed equally from first to last bite. The king crab...try it! Never had anything like the king crab and it left me speechless on how good it was. Eel in the dragon roll has a great taste! No salty tasting eel just delicious eel. The spicy tuna had a kick to it ...it is actually a spicy tuna. If you like spicy tuna, get it here. For dessert, the mochi! Lots of flavors (green tea, red bean, mango, and stawberry). Service was as amazing to match. Waters always filled. Kept a balance of space to enjoy the food and checking up on us. It was also an honor to have the owner make the sushi too. He had training in Japan and several years in this industry. It definitely shows in the food and service! Will be coming back on next trips to Breckenridge. This place blew me away. I reccomend anyone wanting sushi to eat here because I think you will leave satisfied. read more

This place is very expensive, but you'd expect that in a nice ski resort. If you don't have a reservation, it's hard to get a table quickly. The wait can stretch for over an hour at times. I recommend sitting at the bar- more availability and you get to see the sushi chefs in action. The food took a REALLY long time. The only reason that I'm giving this place a 4 star review is because of the amazing food. The spicy scallops (I believe they're called Big Eye) are delicious. The tuna was amazing. And we brought a spectacular looking plate of sashimi home because it was taking too long. The service was okay, but they were stressed out. Recap: Great food, not so great timing. My boyfriend and I went here for his birthday night. I was fortunate to be able to use a $25 gift card that I received from Relaxation Dental. I think it's really cool that this local business supports other local businesses in other sectors. Once I met my boyfriend there we did have to wait about 10 minutes for our server, but every table was full and the bar, and it made it easy to place our entire order as soon as he came over. We took two recommendations from the server, the King Crab 5 pc, and the scallop handroll. They have two options, seaweed wrap, or rice wrap which is nice to have options. We also got an assortment of other classic rolls. Our waiter was really nice and funny and chill which is great. My only little complaint is that I got a soda and once I drank it, it sat on empty for the remainder of the meal, even after the server came over a few more times. Yes, I am a sushi snob. Yes, I am somewhat proud of that "snobbery". Sushi restaurants to me are divided into 3 types: chains, trained sushi cooks, chef owners who are proud of their craft. We have been here 6-8 times this year and I have to say it has grown on us. Speak with the owner behind the bar and you will see he is truly excited to prepare omakase and showcase his fresh creations. Salmon, abalone, Uni, amaebi, tuna - were all fresh and tasty. Salmon skin hand roll was good. The prices are at a premium compared to many places in Denver but figure in transport, resort town, etc and it's ok. Overall a solid place for good food. Loved the sushi! You can tell that they make sushi with good quality ingredients and put time into crafting it. I definitely recommend the sushi. I had the Daily Dragon Special with yellowtail and tuna. It was very good! My roll came out about 10 minutes after everyone else's sushi came out though unfortunately. The quality and taste overall, though, made up for the long wait. My friend ordered the Japanese curry with chicken which he definitely did not like. The server promised it would be spicy, however it *definitely* had no spice whatsoever. It was also over-seasoned and did not have a good taste. Several of us tried it and we all agreed it was bad. Would recommend staying away from this dish! Another thing I would say about this restaurant is that food timing is off. Some of us were done eating 20 minutes before other food came out. It's not a terrible negative, however something I would note. Lastly, service was about average. Our server was nice, however he did forget a few soups or take a while to get them out. One friend did not even get his soup. -Side note that a friend wanted to add - the hostess was amazing and went out of her way to ensure we got a table! Call me a sushi snob and I rarely Yelp a 1 but honestly... I asked 3 locals where their favorite sushi spot was. All 3 answered Mtn. Flying Fish. Great I thought. Uh not so much. I enjoyed 2 things here. The Kurosawa bottle of sake that I had on my own and the nicely blanched asparagus in my Asparagus Roll. The miso soup was so salty that it was still harsh after adding hot water. The veggie tempura was a bunch of onion rings. I got to enjoy half a shitake mushroom and one Shiso (oba) leaf. The tekka wasn't bad but the rice was tough and rough and the sesame seeds weren't toasted. Felt like they borrowed them from a sesame bagel (but those are usually toasted). The kicker is that the service was super slow. I know they meant well, I'm just glad that the locals keep them busy. They seem like good people. Saying that, it was closing day so I can understand why the quality of food wouldn't be as good as an average day. read more

Best sushi in the USA! Fresh ingredients are flown in especially for this little restaurant every day and it comes through in the flavor. The nigiri can be ordered individually and they can accommodate every taste and any particular requests. I have ordered the teriyaki chicken and vegetables several times and it is just perfect after a day on the slopes. You leave this restaurant with your appetite sated but feeling "clean" on the inside. Really fun selection of beer and wine. Get here early as they do not take reservations. Seriously, people line up at the door even before they open. Great for families or couples and small parties. Solo patrons can eat and watch the masters create their culinary artwork! I went here on a 'date' the other night after answering what seemed like 20 questions from the guy about which side of the county I want to dine at and what I was interested in having. Now, I live around the corner from one of the better sushi restaurants in denver, and I spent three years in the 'sushi-in-strip-malls' mecca that is LA, so when he picked Mountain Flying Fish as the place to woo me, I was curious... It's relatively unassuming (on the top floor of La Cima which is Breck's answer to a shopping mall -- complete with all the touristy places that you can gather), and is clean but not fancy and busy but relatively quick to be seated. After a looooong time to get menus (not a worry though, conversation moved easily), we settled on purple haze sake, a sashimi combo, two rolls (spicy tuna & salmon skin), and edamame. It was more than enough food (although the guy admitted that he had pizza a few hours before, and I was attempting to hold back from my usual raw fish gorge-fest as to not embarrass myself) and had good flavor and freshness. The combo was well presented (even mix of obscure and traditional) and I appreciated that it had more smaller pieces rather than 2 larger cuts of each fish. As we were seated at the bar, we got to watch Damian (pretty sure of his name, but he's the tall, long-haired, snowboarding chef) create and then torch some crazy, badass special roll for the couple next to us. The fish was beautiful, fresh, and delicious - in fact, it's some of the best fish I've had at a sushi restaurant, and I've been to the best of the best. At Mountain Flying Fish, I was truly impressed. We ordered the caterpillar roll, smoked salmon, spicy scallop roll, halibut belly and several others and enjoyed every bite. I have a house in Breckenridge and go there frequently. My brother's family comes once a year for a week of skiing/snowboarding and we have a tradition of going to Mountain Flying Fish (actually we have been going since it was "Sushi Breck" in the early 90s). After a starter of yummy edamame, we are always amazed at the quality of fish up in the mountains of Colorado...and always have a great experience at MFF. The basic nigiri and sashimi is fantastic - clean and fresh. This trip (January 2011) we were lucky enough to be there on a night when they had belly tuna. It was melt-in-your-mouth good. The rolls are good for the younger crowd and always fresh and tasty. The teriyaki and tempura is great as well. They have an extensive sake menu, but that's not our thing...so we just enjoy the "big" Sapporo. :) Finally, the owners and staff are super friendly and we are always glad to go back. read more

Kind of in a difficult location, but finally found it. Having driven up from Phoenix, we expected to just slide right in and enjoy some sushi. I am a sushi snob, and if the chef isn't from Japan or at least KNOWS Japanese, I'm out the door. We scouted out the spot from down here in Arizona, and some Japanese bakers down here had been up to Breckenridge the week before. They said to go to MFF. The sushi chef is phenomenal. So, we got in and said we had just driven up from Phoenix. The sushi chef, Tesuo, had been expecting us (thanks to a phone call from the Phoenix bakers). He did not disappoint. He had given us his background of being a sushi apprentice for a few years in Osaka, then moving to the states before settling in Breckenridge. He assured us that the sushi was fresh, and it definitely showed. The prices are a bit on the high side, but that is the price you pay for the luxury of having fresh delivered to your plate, when you're so far away from the ocean. We tried to eat here on Thanksgiving as is our tradition on Turkey day (we don't like turkey), but alas they were not open. With a huge group of friends at Oktoberfest however we did finally get to enjoy Sushi in the mountains, and it was awesome! the Unagi was incredible, the Spicy tuna, awesome. The only one we didn't enjoy was the Mixed dragon, a bit too out there for most of the group's tastes. Sadly is was also not cheap and we got 2, lesson learned, be bold on the less expensive pieces :) All in all an incredible time, and our server was the best! I was really worried with 12 slightly to really inebriated people at the table we'd be too much, but she handled us like a champ! If you're in Breck, and hankering for a great sushi meal, go to Mtn. It's hard to write this review because if you've had sushi in other cities that have access to fresh fish, then Mountain Flying Fish doesn't stand a chance; but, if you compare its sushi with other ski resorts, then yes, this place is a very good choice. We were craving sushi and decided to go to this place. It was located on third floor and a little difficult to find. The atmosphere was exactly what we were looking for. They sat us right away. We eat sushi very often so know exactly what we want typically. All was good besides the service. She seemed to have a really bad attitude. I'm on vacation so it didn't sit well with us. We ordered yellow tail and a lobster roll but I can't recall the name! I can tell you it was delicious! All food came out quickly. The sushi did taste fresh but not worth the prices they charge. However I understand you're paying for sushi up here in the mountains. The service was very slow (very very slow)! I asked for wifi passcode from one of the servers and she said she didn't know if they had one. Like really? You work there how do you not know? Go ask someone. So I asked our server and she was nice and wrote down the code for me however it didn't connect until we were done eating. The Daily Dragon roll which was $20.25 was very good. But don't get the house special roll $18.00. It had a funny taste to it. Overall I was pretty satisfied which all the food. It took ridiculously long for everything to come out and they didn't look that busy at all. I read from other reviews that they don't do take out when they're too busy and they were taking take-outs that night. I did order a lot of food but it was reaaaaaallly slow. I spent $165 for two people but it's ok I was really hungry and was curious on what sushi was like in Breck (especially after reading reviews). So sushi itself not bad, price is too pricey for the sushi (but if you want and are craving sushi while in the area it's better than all the other sushi up here), service needs work!
