This Mountain Magic Shave Ice location is in Waikele Shopping Center, near Petco and the food trucks. To be honest, this place is one of my favorite shave ice places on island. This place is close to home, they have an abundant amount of syrup flavors to choose from, and they also have toppings to add on. Due to this pandemic, Mountain Magic was closed for a little bit but I'm so glad they reopened as summer is creeping up on us. They did such a great job making sure the workers are wearing masks and gloves as well as providing to-go cups rather than their regular plastic cones. So let's talk about their shave ice. I love how their shave ice is crushed into small, smooth pieces that are perfect size. If the shave ice is too large, it's difficult to eat. If the shave ice is too fine, it melts too fast. I feel like their ice is perfectly shaved. And every time I come here, they put just enough syrup that almost every piece of ice is covered. I also always add ice cream to the bottom because well, why not? But what I just realized was how amazing their mochi balls are. You definitely can tell they're homemade. I remember being pregnant (approximately 12 years ago) and satisfying my strawberry shave ice with snowcapped cravings from their old stand which used to be located directly infront of Old Navy. They've upgraded in the past couple of years to a hut along side the Leonard's bakery, Lavernes and other food trucks. We love the cream flavors, and "local flavors." Strawberry cream, Creamsicle, melona are our favorite cream flavors. We recently got hooked on lemon peel. Our other favorites are peach, green river and lychee. My husband likes the azuki bean topping, but im personally not a fan. My picky eater middle child normally gets vanilla. Lol. But no matter what flavor, snowcap is a must! They are usually pretty good with the syrup but sometimes I've had patches of just ice, although it hasn't happened recently. One thing to note is that it is cash only, we made the mistake of not bringing cash once and had to go to the safeway to withdraw some shave ice funds. Cherry is such a hard flavor to come by (at least the one that I look for) a lot tastes like medicine I decided to give this place a shot since I always pass by it. All my years of being a "West sider" I've always known of this spot, but just never visited. Wow, what was I thinking?! It's a convenient location to get a nice, cool, sweet treat! The shaved ice is very light and fluffy, we had no chunks in ours. Just how we like it. After our exercise activity, we were hot and worked up. Looking for some kind of dessert to reward ourselves, we decided this was perfect, and it sure was! There's lots of convenient parking nearby. Crosswalk for crossing the street safely. Metal bar barricade to queue up without worrying about passing cars. These lineup of street food trucks have really made this area a nice pit stop for all of the central Oahu peeps. I know this shaved ice stand was actually one of the original ones in Waikele, so I'm glad they have survived all this time. For our first time we decided on something popular. I kinda paused so she continues with, "it's $4.50 for the keiki plus $1 for the ice cream so $17.50". I scoffed at her and gave her the $17.50 because there was a line behind me and I usually tip anyway. Either she's incredibly dumb and can't do basic math with a calculator or they're scamming tips from customers. Then as we're waiting for our order they just call our orders so whoever hears theirs goes and grabs it. But it doesn't all come together so like I get 1 from my order while the person ahead of me is still waiting for their last one. So I get 2 of our 3 and the next one is the person after me then the next one is my last one but the person after me grabs it so I thought they just ordered the same thing. Turns out they didn't and just snatched ours. So I had to wait for them to make another one and they end up making it with the wrong flavors. So I have to wait longer and when I finally get all 3 it was sooooo disappointing! The flavors were really dull and watered down. The ice cream was one tiny scoop and barely noticeable. Totally not the same as it was before. I get times are tough nowadays but skimping on quality will only drive customers away. Nestled on the side walk between Old Navy and Sports Authority at the Waikele Outlets, Magic Mountain Shave Ice is not a wagon, cart, or food truck - it's a shave ice stand! Everything is well organized with signs and clear directions. One sign states that if you see any "white" spots, go to the front of the line and get more syrup!! There are lists with the various add-ons and toppings with the prices - just remember to bring cash!! I had the Tiger's Blood (coconut and raspberry), Horchata, and Pineapple flavors - so ono!. Not only does this place make one of my favorite shave ice, but theres also an amazing Aunty who runs the show. She has a new Kiosk which is much better than her old one, now it looks more spacious and she and her one worker can work comfortably. Lines can get pretty long, so be sure to keep an eye out, some times its slow, and the next thing you know it theres a line starting to form. Her shave ice ranges form different flavors like Tigers blood, rainbow, lychee, POG, etc.. Theres also topping for an extra 75 cents, Mochi balls, Li Hing Powder, Condensed Milk, Azuki Beans,, and Ice Cream. So after going on a hike in Palisades with some friends, we decided that shave ice would be just what we needed! My friend claimed that her FAVORITE shave ice place EVER was located in Waikele Shopping Center right by Sports Authority. Being a shave ice snob, I was definitely skeptical at first. I actually never even liked shave ice until I had Tat's shaved ice one day at Eat the Street a couple of years ago OR Scandinavian Shave Ice in Kona on the Big Island. There's was the only shave ice that ever impressed me. But, I was willing to give this place a try since my friend liked it so much. When we got there, the line wasn't too bad (maybe 2 groups ahead of us), but it wasn't long before it got really long. I could see that this place was popular. However, long lines making it look popular doesn't always mean good...lol! I've been tricked before! Haha...having to wait in line gave this newbie time to check out the menu and figure out what I wanted. I decided on three flavors: strawberry, vanilla, and lychee with vanilla ice cream and a snow cap (drizzled with condensed milk on top). When it was my turn, they were quick to take and make my order. Make sure you have cash on hand, as they only accept cash. I was a little turned off by the messiness of my order, but I just asked for more napkins and tried my best to overlook the fact that my hands were now all sticky because of how messy it was made. One cute thing I noticed about this place was that they have a sign that says that they try their best, but sometimes leave white spots. If they do, you have every right to go back to them and ask for more syrup to cover up the white patches. That's very generous of them to do that to make sure that they are satisfying their customers. I actually saw a couple of kids come up to them while I was there and they indeed covered up the icy patches for the kids for free. There aren't many choices to sit down and enjoy your icy goodness. There are plants that line the wall between Sports Authority and Old Navy, so we planted ourselves along the "curb" that was amongst the plants. There I had my chance to dig in to this so-called "BEST" shave ice. It didn't take long for me to realize that this was in fact really awesome shave ice! The only drawback I have about the way they make their orders is that the ice cream was at the bottom. I like it when places put the ice cream in the middle so you can eat it with the ice. Junk places that put the ice cream at the bottom often have junk ice cream that is melty/melted by the time you get to the bottom. Mountain Magic uses Dave's Ice Cream, which seems to hold its own until you're ready to dig into it. If you're into mochi balls with your shave ice, my friend said that she LOVES their mochi balls. She thinks that they make their own mochi balls because it seems that good. I'm not a fan of mochi balls, so I can't attest to her opinion on this.
