We love Mountain Valley Meats. Anytime we head up to Kings Beach we always stop on our way in. I love seeing the variety of sausages they have that day. We always get the Potsticker (literally the inside of a potsticker) and maple breakfast sausages. This last visit we got a Thai red curry chicken sausage which was amazing. We also love trying some of their other varieties. If you like spicy spicy then they sometimes have a chicken habanero which will light you up. The meats are always super fresh and flavorful. It's a must stop if you are even remotely close to them. I really wish I had photos to add but we usually chow down by the time they are cooked. Next time maybe. read more

I always know I am going to love a town when I am talking to my people about something and a local leans over and offers a suggestion to just the local place that I need. And that's how I found out about Mountain Valley Meats. I was in the Raley's (and it's a lovely Raley's for a chain supermarket) and looking at their meat selection said to my husband, I think we will need to find the local butcher. And a local pulls up next to us and says, "you need to go to Mountain Valley Meats". And so we did. I was looking for something very specific. And I called a few days ahead thinking that they would have to order it. And I shouldn't have worried. They were happy to cut it and have it ready for me the next day. On top of that, they even tied it for me since I wasn't in my own kitchen and didn't have my supplies with me. And I have to tell you, it was one of the most beautiful cuts of pork that I have ever cooked. When I went to pick it up I was blown away by their meat selection. I bought some of their house made sausages and the potsticker sausage was incredible just pan seared and served with roasted potatoes. The hot sausages were also just beautiful. The beef jerky they sell is incredible. And a top notch selection of milk and cheese. I wish I had found them sooner because the steaks looked absolutely beautiful. I was blown away when I found this treasure of a butcher shop in Truckee. From there house-made sausages and animal Ranch beef to their freezer full of game meats, Demi-glacé, Strauss Ice Cream and other delectables, I was literally the man-child an the proverbial candy/meat shop!! They even have a nice selection of fresh fruits and veggies to accompany your protein selection. I tried each of their sausages. Yep! I took home all of them, including their breakfast sausage!!! My favorite was the potsticker sausage. It tasted just as the name implied. Surprisingly, my least favorite was the habanero honey. However, it was still a very good sausage. I like heat but, it was a little too hot for me. (But it's was, after all, HABENERO. So who's fault is that?) lol the biggest and best surprise was the Carolina pork sausage. What an awesome idea! It pains me to write this review as I've always enjoyed shopping at this market, but we won't be going back. We put a $25 deposit down on a Thanksgiving turkey but unfortunately my father passed away on the Monday of Thanksgiving week, forcing us to return to the East Coast the next day to start planning funeral arrangements. When I called and asked if we could apply the $25 toward a future purchase (so we could celebrate Thanksgiving upon our return home from this difficult trip), I was denied. We didn't mind losing the money per se, but found it terribly cold given the circumstances. Don't we frequent local businesses to avoid these types of policies? read more

Review is only for the sausages which we found actually quite bland . We tried several flavours . From now on we take up sausages from our local Los Gatos meats which blow these away . The guy who helped me out was pretty unfriendly and abrupt - which I could give a shit about if the sausages had been any good . Mountain Valley Meats was our second stop in Truckee after lunch next door at the brewery. It's better to have lunch before coming here, so you don't meat shop on an empty stomach! The meat shop has a lot of selection of high quality cuts and they'll trim or cut any meat special that you might need. But what I was interested in were the housemade sausages! There's an ever rotating selection. Just check the website for what they have. Mountain Valley Meats produces all their own sausages in house and they sure come up with some unique combinations! A few I saw, were Jalapeno Pineapple, Blue Cheese and Pear and one called Potsticker sausage! I bought 4 types for $11.99/ lb. About 3 sausages make a pound. The ones I got were, potsticker, Carolina BBQ, Bratwurst and Pale Ale with parsley. I also saw some prime grade NY steaks and skirt steak as well as Hanger steak. The prices are way above supermarket prices, but I'm sure the quality is much better too. There were maybe 6 other choices beyond the 4 that I picked. The service was super helpful and friendly. It wasn't crowded when I went, but I could see it getting crowded in there as it's a small shop. Check it out if you're in Truckee and you need something for dinner. We BBQ grilled the sausages and they were all great! Just the right balance of fat content and spices. I'll probably pass on the potsticker one in the future ... I guess I don't want a sausage to taste like a potsticker. The Brat was pretty standard. The pale Ale had a crumbly texture, may be ground beef? I'm glad they have many other choices besides to pick from. As far as sausages go. I'd say these are on the more lean side, but still juicy if you don't cook then too long. BBQ grill is the best way or pan frying. Don't use the oven broiler, when the casings open and juice squirts out, you'll have one smoky mess in the oven. read more

This butcher store is a gem of all gems, simply delicious...and the staff has improved like a fine wine. The meats are all top grade and their in house made sausage are creative and absolutely phenomenal. The only reason I didn't give a 5 star rating is because the seasoning is inconsistent in their unique sausages. Sometimes the seasonings are perfectly distributed and other times they're almost too hot for consumption such as their potstickers. Once they get the consistency down this place will boom to the highest star possible. read more

Recently work assigned me to a position in Truckee for several weeks and to save money I opted to cook in my hotel room. The problem I had was I only had Safeway and Savemart to choose from for my meat options and I'm not a fan of either, so out of fleeting hope I googled butchers and these guys popped up. I had the company driver take me over there the day before thanksgiving. After a little searching in the retail complex I found the spot, should have parked on the other side of the complex Upon walking in I found some fantastic rib eyes staring me right in the eyes and one of the employees asked me right off how he could help me. I told him to pick me the two rib eyes he'd cook. As he was selecting them I saw several trays of homemade sausages beckoning to me and opted for a half dozen of maple breakfast sausages. Next I asked for a pound of bacon and he asked me how thick I wanted. I was like what do you mean? He held up a slab of pork belly and in awe I just said I like it thick I could have said something else, but he sliced it perfectly. Everything I purchased from them the two times I went were amazing. The whole floor of the hotel was jealous. The steaks were well marbled and tasted great cooked to Medium Rare. I just loved the breakfast sausages. The bacon had a fantastic flavor and cooked well slow and low. I definitely recommend this place and will return when work sends me to truckee again. read more

I wanted to cook a steak dinner for 6 friends after a long day at Northstar. Daniel at Mountain Valley Meats came to the rescue and was (incredibly) generous with his time to explain how he would prepare such a meal so that everything was cooked perfectly and served in unison. This place is not very big, they make up for it with by offering some of the best meats. The selection is diverse, from jerky to sausages and some game meat. I picked up a few sausages and grilled them up that night. The consistency and flavor was top notch. If you get the chance try the wonton sausages, serve them with some spicy mustard or some sweet dipping sauce. These are a nice deviation from the common sausage. We went to this butcher for their famous house made chicken sausages, which are great. The butcher also recommended a Niman Ranch New York strip steak which was marbled like Kobe beef. We had not been eating steak for a few years, but we cooked it the next evening and it indeed was world class, similar to what we had at our Japanese vendors' steak house in Kobe. Ok. This place was a real shocker. I'll start by saying, Potsticker sausage made me roll my eyes when I first walked in. I've seen a lot of people try to use Asian flavors, and they have no idea what they are doing. NOT this place. It was so good, I had a ratatouille moment. Also, the Honey Basil marinated chicken 10/10. Juicy, and the flavor was just so good. Served it with some sautéed kale and my family was asking for more. We will definitely be coming back.
