We had a terrific experience at Mtn West Cider on a scheduled tour of the facility. The Ruby is well known, and has been a favorite cider for my wife for years. Awesome taste test after the tour to experience new cider specials changed monthly. Full bar available, with spirits and beer available as well. Jeff and team do an excellent job at their craft. We will be back this summer to try their new restaurant, and hang out in the connected Bier Garten with some live music. They have a store you can pop in and purchase some canned, bottled, or growlers on draft ciders. Pro Tip: Call and schedule a tour and tasting prior to going. Being on a cider kick lately, I searched yelp for a cider place while visiting SLC. I was excited to see this place pop up! While in the area, my girlfriend and I stopped by the tasting room to try them out before purchasing retail bottles to bring home. This location has a small retail section, a small bar/tasting area adjacent, and then a large beer garden area next to it where you can grab some drinks and relax. We just wanted to sample their selection so we did a cider flight ($6) in the tasting room. The girl working was super nice and gave us the rundown on each flavor (Ruby, Cottonwood, Lunchbox, 7 Mile, and Desolation) plus a small pour. I enjoyed all of them and they all tasted very different.. it was a pleasant surprise on our trip. After our tasting, we grabbed 7 Mile and Ruby to go and headed out. The prices are reasonable and the product is awesome, gotta support local businesses, plus commercial ciders on the market are gross. These are not. Overall I would definitely recommend checking this place out if you like cider and I would return more often if I lived here! read more

Craziness! I went with a group-- all of us from out of state. I called ahead to check that they were serving food, had cider flights (as advertised on the menu and website), and had sweet ciders. All were confirmed. We took an uber, for Friday Night Flights, on Friday night and they did NOT have flights because we could only sit outside and they don't do their flights outside. Apparently because dogs are allowed outside and they can't have glass outside with dogs???AND they only do glass inside and they serve drinks in plastic cups outside?? But we had no option to go inside. When we arrived, we tried to open a locked door with an OPEN sign and someone came out and said, " Can I help you?" (Yes. We are here for food and cider). She then told us to go to the patio. Turns out their specialty is dry ciders--not sweet. That they weren't sure if the kitchen was serving food! And they were not. Can I please have my money back and get reimbursed for our uber ride? I was embarrassed that I took friends here for a Friday night outing! read more

Went in to pick up some cider to try. Was stoked to see a cider brewery in the area. Came in and was greeted with the worst possible customer service I've ever experienced. The lady working made me incredibly uncomfortable even being in the building buying cider and couldn't answer any of my questions I had. I ended up buying 3 of their ciders, the prickly pear, cherry, and original. Not great flavor. Was really bummed. The base apple cider isn't great and then adding their flavors to it didn't add anything to the cider. Super disappointed. Hoping I just got a bad batch and can come try again when I'm in the area. Hopefully the unhelpful associate lightens up or gets another job. read more

Stopped in because of the proximity to our Marmalade residence and this was our first SLC brewery! There's space to sit inside and it feels pretty cozy, but we just took our ciders to go. The employee behind the counter gave us a great run down of each and every cider. I think our favorite was the Cottonwood Dry Hopped. We also picked up a prickly pear (haven't tried it yet), a ruby hard (decent but not as sweet as I'd been expecting), and something else... there's also some larger bottles from different vintage bottles available. read more

Forget everything you know about about cider! Which was pretty easy for me...since the only thing I knew about cider was from Ned Flanders on the Simpsons. "If it's clear and yella you got juice there fella. If it's tangy and brown you're in Cider Town!" I had this notion that hard cider was a cloyingly sweet beverage that lightweights drank because it tasted like soda. Boy, was I wrong! I stopped by for a UYE tasting and got a schooling. The owners and the cider maker were extremely knowledgeable and personable. I received a crash course in cider and it's history. Did you know it's America's oldest alcoholic drink?? Currently they have one cider available...Ruby. Ruby is a sophisticated little cider clocking in at 6.8% alcohol. She is not too sweet, but is most definitely sassy with her crisp sharp bubbles, off-dry taste and a slight fruity apple finish. You could drink this as you would any sparkling white wine. Apparently it's gluten free, full of antioxidants and has less calories then wine. It's practically health food! They are working on different ciders and are experimenting with different techniques and recipes. They had a whiskey barrel full of some aging cider that had some real unique smokey flavors. Should be an interesting batch. Sounds like a high alcohol (13%) and a cinnamon infused cider were in the makings. This cider is made in small batches and the production capacity is small, but there is definitely room to grow. The apples are locally sourced from The Mountainland cooperative in Santaquin, Utah. So, you can feel good about supporting local business too! The cider can be purchased by the bottle, which is $5.99 for 500 ml (about 17 oz). They have a cooler stocked with some cold ones for you to take home. Mountain West Cider will be in Utah liquor stores soon and apparently it's already being served in several local restaurants. Came here for a Yelp elite event and it wasn't disappointing at all. This company started in November bringing cider beer into Utah. All the apples gathered for this beer was from local Utah orchards. These cider beer is like wine, except the alcohol level is a bit lower, and it's yummier for me. This place can be transformed into an event venue if you so wish to have a party there. I'm sure catering and stuff can be discuss with the owners and they can make it a night to remember. The owners of mountain west cider was super friends and made the event wonderful. They started us off by giving us samples of their most famous line of cider which is called ruby. They also gave us a tour of their brewery and their process on making their cider. We got to try the different stages of the alcoholic cider in the making. Honestly though, the apple juice is the yummiest I've tried. They also let us sample a test line that they are considering rolling out in the future. It is the beer cider fermenting in a bourbon barrel. It is super yummy, taste like wine, but without it being as strong. I do recommend asking for the cider beer made here because it's super yummy. They do have it available all around Salt Lake City. I even bought two bottles before I left. That's how much I loved their ruby. read more

The Great Cheese Festival Disaster of 2019, hosted at MWHC. This event was a ripoff and total disappointment. For a cheese festival, there should be a plethora of cheese. Mounds of aged milks in flurries of flavors. Most of the Utah cheese makers should be present, bringing with them their lovingly curated wheels of goodness. 1 . one . uno . a single There was 1 cheese company in attendance at the SLC Cheese Festival that was sold out and charging $30/pp for a lame charcuterie platter in addition to cheese samples. The board was a joke... huge bologna size slices of random meats, including a couple sandwich pieces of standard deli ham. STANDARD DELI HAM on a $30 cheese festival charcuterie platter... not salami, salumi, or prosciutto. We were told the charcuterie cheeses are available only to restaurants, the public can't buy them - great, I love sampling foods I cannot buy. Plus only one kind of cracker. Water was free, but any other drinks were for purchase (seems like a trick to get people in to drink). Luckily the one cheese company there was Beehive Cheese, which did a great job sharing about their business, had delicious samplings (hatch chili, lavender espresso - my personal favorite) and we got a small wedge of one of the cheeses by signing up on their email list. Thanks Beehive Cheese! There were 3 other vendors. One was a cheesecake truck (3 yummy options, although the berries were over ripe and mooshy). The next was Park City Culinary Institute (great sales presence, Chef Todd was on hand to talk about their one-time and weeks-long cooking classes (the one-time classes at $60-75 ish for 2 hours plus food and drinks (mocktails for the non-alcohol drinkers). He seems like a great guy to learn from, so we are rounding up a bunch of friends to fill a class sometime. And the third a jelly/jam vendor with plenty of pre-dishes samples of each flavor. Our favorite that we bought was the balsamic - snappy and thick, a great pairing with sweeter cheeses. That was it... MWHC, Beehive Cheese, cheesecake truck, Park City Culinary Institute, charcuterie we couldn't buy more from, and jelly/jam. That is not a festival, it's a munch and mingle. Board should've been more like $10. Suggestions for a better event next time: most of the local cheeses represented, a legit charcuterie board/bowl that's worth the price, handout of what's represented to take notes and buy on site or later, survey attendees for feedback on improvement, voting for various cheeses, and more seating. I get this was the first year which can be challenging to pull off. Profuse apologies for the disappointing experience would've dampened my irritated mood. No photos for proof because it made me sad to take pictures of the dud. read more

Hm, looks like I'm the unpopular opinion here but I just had to voice it. I love cider and especially sweet ciders. I live in the Seattle area so ciders are definitely a plenty. My friend recommended trying this place out. He prefers dryer ciders tho so I can see why he was a fan. When I came in it was pretty empty bc it was around the holidays but I prefer it that way so it's not loud. I tried the cider flight and apparently they don't have any ciders that are sweeter. I was immediately turned off when they said they don't really have sweet ciders. My bf's fav was the whiskey barrel aged specialty one. I wasn't a fan of any of them and they all seemed a bit flat. However, if you like sweeter ciders I'd highly recommend trying their hot spiced mulled cider cocktail it was definitely a treat! read more

If you want to broaden your selection of beverages, try Mountain West Cider. It is naturally gluten free because it is apple-based. Not just any apples, but locally grown apples. I had the opportunity to taste the pure juice before the fermentation process and omg I must say it is the best apple juice I have ever tasted. So you can be rest assured that the final product called Ruby Cider is a big deal. They have a small tasting counter here where you can get a taste of what this place is offering. Being newly opened, they don't have varieties yet but the owners told us that they are working on that. They are open to new ideas too so if you like your cider being done in a certain way, let them know. From the tasting room, you can see their production floor through the windows. From one look, it is uninteresting. You'll see static 800-gallons metal tanks. No fancy color no glitter. Fortunately for me, I was there for UYE, so I don't have to break into any restricted library section under my invisibility cloak to learn about concocting drinks. They explained the process to us. Here's how it goes in a nutshell. They get fresh juice locally, let it settles for a bit then ferment it with yeast in that big tanks for some time. This is where the magic happens. Then pump in CO2 for to make it carbonated and voila, your delicious cider is done. If I want to describe it, it's dry but smooth enough, not too sweet, bubbly and refreshing. So if you are in the neighborhood, do drop by. It's fascinating to see the process up close, do some tasting and talk with Jeff and Jen, who are very friendly and very passionate with what they are creating here. Had an enjoyable visit to MWHC! My husband works about a block away, so after visiting him, I went with my now 21 year old kiddo to Mountain West try out Utah's hard cider. They have a beautiful Garten outside. Lots of seating, shade, and dogs are welcome. We had a little trouble navigating the power wheelchair through the gravel, but we made it to the bar. We asked the bar tender for a flight and she told us they don't do that any more. Hmmm. (It's on the menu.) We asked the owner for a flight and he poured it without hesitation. We were told that they have food trucks and live music on Thursday nights - sounds great! We enjoyed the strawberry apple cider and the one that's closest to a hard apple seltzer. The indoor/retail area was closed, they were directing everyone outside through the Garten entry so I don't know if they have t-shirts, hats or even sixers to go. I'd like a sixer of the seltzer, it was very refreshing! read more

After two successful events in a week at Mountain West Cider's awesome location, the brewery atmosphere and their cider has quickly made it's way to my list of "Salt Lake City Faves". Mountain West Cider currently has one delicious brew: Ruby. I have never been a huge cider girl. The excessive sweetness usually makes me sick before I can finish a beverage, but Ruby hasn't treated me this way. She's the perfect level of cider-sweetness, meaning - there isn't a ton of it. She's made with LOCAL apples as well - could she get any better?! Ruby reminds me a lot of champagne, and I'm a HUGE fan of that. Local apple champagne without a scary pop top!? Put it in me always. My first visit to Mountain West was for a Yelp event. At this point, I got to meet the fabulous owners and learn more in depth about their awesome establishment, future brews (the next should be hitting our mouths around March!), and extremely local love that is Ruby. Needless to say, I was excited to return for my second event, 2 days later. Side Note: if you are attending an event at Mountain West, and you're wanting to purchase Ruby for later, long night tastings, you do need to make sure to buy it before 7pm - when they have to stop selling. I went to the first event hoping to pick some up as I left, but Utah is Utah and does not permit this. I learned quickly for my second event: I got there slightly before 7pm and purchased, and have thoroughly enjoyed her subsequently (at only $5.99 per bottle!). If you are able to attend an event at this amazing location - DO IT. They have a fun location to fit in many people, they have a wonderful group of fun staff members, AND they know how to host a great event. Mountain West is one I will definitely return to. I've been to a few of the events held in the Biergarten and the main space is cute! Went to a st Patrick's day event here that was a blast and really full! The Oktoberfest event they had wasn't worth the entry fee, and the expanded space with vendors was a mess. I'd skip that and just go to snowbird. The pours they were giving that day were laughable as well. The drinks themselves are great! The ciders are delicious and not so sweet, and I love the variety they have! read more

Came here on my visit to Salt Lake city for the weekend. They are only open on Saturday, and not Sunday so plan your trip accordingly. It is located just outside of the heart of downtown and looks like a small building from the front but has plenty of signage. Inside is a small tasting room with just a few seats at the "bar" with a viewing window of all the ciders being produced. The tasting is only $5 in which you get to sample 4-5 different ciders that they make based on what they have available as some are seasonal. Their ciders are not as sweet as the mainstream ones and even have one that is created from random local apples (Lunchbox). The employees are super friendly and knowledgeable about all the ciders. If you are a cider fan, I would strongly suggest checking out this place if you are in the area as it is a quick stop but worth it! read more

Love this local cider-y and so glad I was able to come in and get a tour! We originally had a Groupon but I've been drinking Mountain West Cider since I moved to Utah. It's local and all super fresh, they don't add any sugar. I have so much more respect for them after learning all about the owners and the origins of the company. Sara was the person who assisted us and she was so sweet and fun. She offered her favorite suggestions for the ciders and also gave us detailed information about each kind. The only thing I was bummed to find out is that we'd barely missed Oktoberfest. I will definitely be attending the next one they have next year.
