First, when I walked in I was greeted immediately. They had a variety of options. I chose the oxtails with Mac and cheese and dirty rice. The oxtails were prepared in a smothered fashion (not like Jamaican restaurants), it was soooo good. I liked the dirty rice as well. I didn't particularly care for the Mac and cheese but it doesn't take away from the rest of the meal. The meal came with a sweet cornbread. The cornbread was a 20/10, so amazing! Gosh I would order a whole pan. My husband loved it as well. I also ordered the red velvet cake. It was great as well. The place was clean as well and they were one of my favorites movies. Just like other reviewers before me This place is tucked away in a side facing shopping strip. The food is excellent and priced just right. My favorite thing was..... no wait.... it was all really good! The Mac n cheese was cheesy, the cabbage was flavorful and not loaded with salt. While visiting in San Antonio for a birthday weekend, hubby and I continue our quest for supporting small business and finding soul food. Everything we had was delicious! My husband had two pork chops,dirty rice and black eyed peas. I ordered the fish, fried which was sway. The sway came with collard greens and yams. I've been looking for some really good fried chicken lately and I finally found it. It was fried with just the right crispness and seasoning. Paired with some grape kool aid, you can't go wrong. I've been dying (or rather, living) to come back here! The service is top-notch and very friendly. I unfortunately forgot my lactase supplement, so I had to get brown gravy instead of cream gravy on my chicken-fried steak. The portion was pretty generous; I was really full after that lunch, but really pleased with my meal. I'd have to say their chicken-fried steak is one of, if not, the best I've had in town (even with brown gravy). I really liked the fried okra I had with my steak. I heard so much about this place on FB so I got my friend and we went. Hard to find but finally made it. The lady that served us was very nice and answered any questions we had. I thought maybe my momma was in the kitchen...fantastic meatloaf and mac n cheese was so good I had to order some more. Best mac n cheese I've ever had in a restaurant! Ordered fried green tomatoes. Then a piece of cake that I think she said was a sour cream cake. The only downside was the breading didn't stay on the fried green tomatoes so I wouldn't order them again and although I can see from the owners side why they use Styrofoam and plastic utensils it was a complete turnoff for me. Now for some criticism, only because this place needs so little to be even greater. PLEASE DECORATE THE PLACE. COLORFUL LIKE A MEXICAN RESTAURANT. ADD JAZZY COLORS AND THINGS. TAKE THE OWNERS ETHNIC COUNTRY AND FOLLOW THROUGH. Relocate the too-high TV, new floor, tables and chairs. Happy music. I would give anything if they would allow me to do this for them. Also, just a few food suggestions. The meatloaf would be even better if there was a choice of a classic tangy red meatloaf sauce. Better than A Ok! New to San Antonio, and wanted to get away from the commercial fast food places I saw the reviews for this place and had to come see for myself. First the location does leave much to be desired as it was small and tucked away off Gibbs-Sprawl. The food however did not disappoint! Staff were very friendly and welcomed me in. They quickly assisted me even though I looked lost and like a deer in headlights staring at the menu. They made some suggestions which I agreed. I ordered the 3 piece with 2 sides mashed potatoes and green beans. I also ordered the chicken fried chicken with mac n cheese and dirty rice. It was all delicious! The chicken was golden brown chrisp outer shell and moist and juicy inside. I should note that the breast was HUGE! The mac n cheese you can tell was made with real cheese and not the processed stuff. The green beans had great flavor, as did the mashed potatoes. The cornbread was also moist and soft, my wife thought it was dense, but I'm the writting the review, so it was good. ;-p If I have one criticism it's that the chicken was a bit salty, although I'm begining to realize alot of food here in the south comes with a good amount of "love" salt! My wife had the "special of the day" chicken fried steak, mac n cheese, green beans (you pick your own sides), cornbread, and kool-aid (Mr. A Ok's mix was good). I had the smothered porkchops which were beyond amazing I also had mac n cheese, fried okra, cornbread, and kool-aid! Small place with amazing food. The staff is awesome and the friendliest I've ever met, felt at home immediately. Four people in my party so I was able to try a lot of different food. Everything I tried was top knotch. Mac and cheese is great, thick and cheesy. Green beans, dirty rice, and yams were really good. Chicken fried steak and chicken fried chicken were tasty. Fried fish was really light and crispy. My husband got meatloaf and it was delicious and the serving was massive. Found it!!! On Yelp, yep I was gettin hungry and my daughter wasn't cooking tonight cause the family left for the weekend... so my oldest grandson and I were left to fend for ourselves for next couple days. This small family southern style cooking restaurant was located near our home off the 35 and Rittiman Rd in a small strip mall tucked just off the road. Michelle was our wait server who gave us such great service tonight. Our meals were served hot and the food was fresh. Corn bread ohh how I enjoy good corn bread which is a must with my meal. So when I ordered .....those Ox tails spoke to me as I hadn't had them in quite awhile....also my grandson ordered the waffles with fried chicken. Our sides were Mac n cheese, fried okra and sweet yams. Next time I know to order mash potatoes so I can soak up those rich juices from the ox tails. Michelle tried to talk us into dessert as they had some fresh homemade lemon cake that sounded wonderful but just to full tonight.
