So prior to heading in for the night, we decided to stop here and check this place out. I was game based on the photos other Yelpers had posted. No issues with parking as they have their own lot. You can call ahead and pick up, dine in or walk in to place your order. Since I was a newbie, I walked in and stared at the menu a while making life decisions. Finally decided what I wanted and opted to eat there as my food would have been cold by the time I got situated. Anyone who enjoys oxtails know that the price point will be high. I didn't mind and was happy with the portion that I recieved. They were tender and fall off the bone good. A couple had a little too much fat on them but still a decent serving. The cabbage and cornbread weren't as warm as I anticipated but tasty just the same. I even had enough for leftovers that reheated well. I'm not a fan of banana pudding so I went with the sock it to me cake as a to go dessert. It was decent enough. I appreciate the level of attention given and the hospitality shown. But, please take a seat...I am gonna tell you like it is. Total gushy praise!!! I called in an order for two oxtail plates. Then, I walked in & remembered other Yelpers talking about the Soul Rolls. This is why I state to get over there. I asked for one order, which happens to be three huge egg roll portions of foods from the gods. It comes with their sauce. Omg get extra!!!! Let me tell you, if you haven't already been tempted by others raving reviews. These rolls are made with wanton wrappers. But inside this wrapping is, well, food heaven! It has amazingly cheesy Mac and cheese, ground beef, green onion & appears to be greens. Okay. Maybe we Texans like things fried. Don't judge. We just know good. These we're truly fresh, hot, spiced perfectly, crunchy & absolutely one of the best things I've eaten in San Antonio a while. Then you dip it into the sauce. Which happens to be some of the best durn gravy I have ever had. I swear to you, this establishment is about to get to know me. I will be a regular here. Have been going here for a while, not always my first choice for soul food but recently tried the A Ok's Sandwich. Very pleasant, large sandwich. Chicken fried steak, fried cheese, boneless pork chop, mashed potatoes, lettuce and tomato with special sauce. Gave a four because the bread did not hold up, way to much stuff on sandwich for this type of bread. I would recommend a big hoagie or a burger bun and I would let the salad (lettuce/tomato) be on the side. read more

Pretty decent little spot hidden away among other shops. If you were not looking for this place it would be one of those places you would probably keep driving past due to the location and how the front is facing. There are no obvious signs near the street letting you know it is there. I still found it and my tummy found the food to be tasty and worth going to. This establishment prides itself on southern cooking and there are more than a few spots in San Antonio that lay claim to this. The difference between this place and others is that it is one of the few to get it right. Also less places in San Antonio get soul food correct. It is one of those situations in some places where people form opinions of food without sampling the real deal which happens a great deal in San Antonio. Not all Southern food is considered soul food, all soul food is definitely Southern. If you have to ask then you will not understand. I was very impressed on the night I went as it was getting close to closing. The people there were very welcoming and was not that rolling of the eye feel when you come in late as they start to prep for closing. The comforting food was definitely what I need on this night. There was a good amount to choose from on the menu and despite it not being a Cheesecake Factory book of secrets menu thick guide I had a hard time making a decision. I went with the chicken fried steak (covered not smothered), corn bread, mac-n-cheese, and fried okra. All was good and you can tell the breaded okra was no store bought okra along with the mac-n-cheese. The mac-n-cheese was good and reminded me of when I would try to get that corner piece when your aunt (the one that knows how to cook) brings a plate over for family dinner. Chicken fried steak had a nice coating that was not over seasoned and the gravy provided some good dipping for the cornbread. We were feeling some real real soul food and I had searched it in the past and came across Mr A Ok's and decided to finally give it a try. We ordered some fried chicken with fried okra and Mac and cheese, and meatloaf with mashed potatoes brown gravy, and black eyed peas, the meals include bread, cornbread or I believe Texas toast, we went with the cornbread. We also did an order of their soup rolls, and a banana pudding for dessert. Let's start with the soul rolls, these are egg roll wrappers filled with a mix of Mac and cheese, collard greens, and meat loaf, with a side of brown gravy for dipping, so you know a nice lite dish, but man is it good. I love any kind of properly done egg roll, and especially enjoy twists on it, and these are a great one. The mix of the creamy Mac and cheese, the tender meatloaf, with the slight freshness but also deep flavor of the stewed collards all wrapped in the perfectly crispy shell, dipped into the rich gravy makes for one outstanding dish. 3 come to an order so you may want 5 or 10 orders, unless there is more than one of you. The fried chicken was very good, nice and crispy, perfectly seasoned, and still juicy on the inside. It was great on its own, or doused in a splash of hot sauce. It is definitely a good choice. The fried okra was excellent, it truly appeared to be real fresh okra that they breaded in a corn meal breading and fried, to often it seems to come out of a bag. But the texture of this was amazing. The black eyes peas were good, but nothing special in my opinion, as I said good but I would rather more okra or something probably. All in all a good plate. The meatloaf was very good, tender meat smothered in gravy and good flavor over all. The Mac and cheese was excellent, a nice creamy rich sauce, making a great side choice. The mashed potatoes and gravy were also good, good texture and flavor, but also they were mashed potatoes so not overly wowing perhaps but still good, and always a classic side for meatloaf. This was another very good plate. Onto dessert and bread, in this case cornbread, I like cornbread in general, and especially like good cornbread, and this was very good cornbread. Sweet and tender and very flavorful, I definitely recommend going the cornbread route, especially when warm with a pat of butter, so good. Banana pudding may be the quintessential Southern dessert, or at least up there with the top of the list, and Mr A Ok makes a good one, pretty straight forward, but so good. I mean it's really just pudding, sliced bananas, Nilla wafer cookies, and some whipped cream, but when combined they make magic, and Mr A Ok does not disappoint with his combination. So at the end of the day, I highly recommend Mr A Ok's for a true taste of Southern soul food. On our next visit it will be a tough choice between what we have already tried or something new like a smothered pork chop, or fried catfish, same for the sides, but I am sure the order will include some okra, Mac and cheese, banana pudding, soup rolls, and of course that outstanding cornbread no matter what else we get. One of my favorite spots in San Antonio. Nothing on the menu is average and everything is made fresh to order, so yes it's going to take a minute for you to get your food. That's the tradeoff for fresh, scratch made food. The soul rolls, the chicken, the fish, the meatloaf - you can't go wrong no matter what you order. Soul food heaven! The dining room is open! Fried chicken and fried pork chop as good (probably better) than your mama or grandma ever made. Every side is a delight: I like the mac and cheese and the sweet yams, husband likes the greens and mashed taters. We both enjoy the delightful corn bread. The soul rolls are comfort food in an egg roll wrapper, served with gravy. Only problem: no room for dessert. Go for the food - the decor and dining room are pretty plain, but the food does not require a fancy showcase: it stands on it's own merit. The new location on Walzem is much bigger - so more room to eat in. The wait staff is super friendly. Our waitress could see we were drinking a good amount of unsweetened tea - so she fresh brewed another pot and brought it straight to our table. Recently went to Mr A OK's with some lunch friends and it was great. It's a bit on the smaller side and there are only a few workers, so pack your patience. The food is delicious! You may have a wait but that's because they cook to order so that fried chicken or fish is going to be HOT! Some complained that their food was in a to go container - but it didn't bother me. Wow- don't judge a book by its cover- this restaurant may not look fancy but the dishes they produce is amazing!! Everything tastes so homemade- nothing tastes artificial. I like that the menu is simple with a couple of choices- straight to the point with staple southern dishes from Fried chicken, chicken and waffles, fried pork chop to Oxtail. I got their Chicken fried Chicken with dirty rice and green beans- wow- everything came out piping hot, the chicken was crispy and moist and that gravy was thick but had a lot of great flavors that really balanced out the crunchy chicken! The dirty rice had a little kick to it and the rice was perfectly cooked. Not too hard or soft- My fiancé had their Asian styled ribs with Mac and cheese. Omg that Asian sauce- it was so good. The ribs were tender and almost reminded me of my mom's Korean Galbi Jimm. We ended our meal with their pumpkin cake! Served cold since it's supposed to mimic a pumpkin pie. Cindy & Steven Harris have opened a tastily inviting place to get some expertly prepared Southern Soul Food. An unassuming exterior in an otherwise slow strip mall on Rittiman, it is a hidden gem. A subdued but homey interior, religious inspiration and paintings, plus a colorful mural make the decor. We were greeted immediately by Cindy and ordered our drinks. Cindy was more than willing to handle all my questions, with smiles all around. She was genuine and we hung out long enough to actually take about things other than minor small talk. Even met her husband Steven who was hard at work making our delicious fodder that night. Sides we choose were: *Okra, which is difficult to make right; easy to become tasteless mush. These were quite the opposite. *Rice had an unexpected spice level to it, but rather than being overwhelming, it added a lovely zest to each bite. *Macaroni & Cheese was good, though not going to deny wanting more cheese in it! *Cabbage, *Collard Greens, *Green Beans were all similarly well done; no complaints really except maybe too watery? Then again, many others like it that way. They were all seasoned nicely. *Texas Toast was freshly toasted, served with butter. *Corn Bread was alright. Personally, wanted it sweeter and have always been partial to the type that includes corn kernels. Though other individuals in my party loved it. Personal preference, I suppose. *Porkchops (Fried) were impressive. Why? Cannot remember the last time my porkchop was this tender. And it was even flavorful! *Oxtails was likewise amazing. Right amount of gravy; succulent, fall-off-the-bone deliciousness. *Asian Style Ribs were great. Also tender, with that unique sweet savory sauce. Only wish the dish came with more. *Chicken & Waffle was probably the only one that was a little disappointing. Chicken was a tad dry and needed some extra sauce. The waffle was lacking in the fluffiness department. some pieces were even hard after a little while. Plus it is the only dish that does not include (two) sides. Not to say that it was bad. Merely satisfactory, which means paling in comparison to the other stellar dishes that exceeded expectations. Dessert! *7 Up Pound Cake was good, but a little dense; sides were hardened or maybe overbaked. That was a good thing, though. More room for the *Banana Bread! Heavenly. Melted in my mouth. Pecans, chocolate chips? Not sure, nor do I care. As long as I can have more! I would love to come back to discover they have added a few more specials to their menu, like Shrimp & Grits, Hock, Chitlins, Gizzards, Biscuits, Yams. More is not always better, though; one can tell that the Harrises would not be ones to add something to the menu unless it is to be done right. If it is owned by a Cindy & Steven, who is Mister A Ok, you ask? Why, Cindy's father. That was his nickname. A dream of his come to fruition by his loving daughter. "Soul Food Has Hit San Antonio" ( Jumps Up and Down) Yesterday after a two hour gym workout and a long stint in rush hour traffic, the babe and I decided that we wanted to eat out ( I know ... I know ... Gains Lost.. but it was worth it ;) )... We thought about Subway and for a split second ... I pictured a veggie sandwich, but decided Yelp could provide other options. After running down a short list, Mr. A OK popped up as our number 1 search. As soon as I peeped the Southern in the information section, those pictures and that Five Star Power, I knew we needed to be seated ... and quickly... within 10 minutes we were pulling in and were greeted warmly by Cindy. A patron was picking up her order and excitedly explained to us that it was her 5th time at the restaurant. She gave us some recommendations and after looking at the menu, we decided on my order of Chicken and Waffles (side of cabbage) and his order, the daily special of Chicken Fried steak, Macaroni and Cheese, Collard Greens and Cornbread. After snapping a few photos, I appreciated the fact that my soul roots were being represented in S.A. and loved seeing the biblical verses on the wall. I felt that this was an establishment rooted in the Lord and had an owner and team that loved what they did. Cindy chatted with us and explained how Mr. A Ok was established. A vision come true by a fellow Art Institute comrade and Graduate and named after her father. Steven, the owner came out proudly dressed in the Art Institute's Chef attire and our food was placed in front of us. The portions were incredible and the steam coming off that chicken let me know it was fresh and right out of the grease. My waffle was soooooo sweet and after eating some fatty wings from Dominos pizza for lunch, I appreciated the nice crispy skin and deep fry on my wings. The seasoning was perfection and the cabbage, collards and macaroni reminded me of Granny's cooking in South Carolina. Cindy kept the tea flowing and tended to a fellow Yelper as we both were absorbing the scene and food to Yelp about. Family, all I can say is I 10000000% agree with the other Yelpers that this was a 5 STAR meal and experience and this little gem on Rittiman Has won a place on the Tippy Top of my foodie list. Just got 2 to go orders from this restaurant. I am amazed that they get such high ratings. The first tipoff was that I didn't smell any food upon entering the door. Chances are the food was probably cooked elsewhere. The food was barely seasoned. If you are on a low salt, no salt diet, this is your restaurant. Hands down the worst mac and (processed) cheese I have ever tasted. The fried fish looked really good, but the batter was not seasoned at all. Everything was heavily sweetened - the cabbage, collards, the dressing for the baked chicken, and the cornbread muffins should have been sold as a dessert. I was greeted by a very nice man sitting at table in the back of the establishment. The hostess was nice and greeted us. She gave us the menus to decide what we wanted. We ordered the fried fish, with collard greens, yams, and mac & cheese, fried chicken with jalapeno sauce, black eyed peas, and cabbage. I saw other customers getting their food and I really wanted to sit with them and eat off their plate. That's how good the food looked! Hehehehe! The food came out hot and I was so excited. So I randomly seen this place while watching a random episode on YouTube of "Texas Eats". We had the ribs w/Asian sauce, fried chicken and the soul rolls.... The Asian sauce on the ribs was amazing, the one thing that myself personally didn't like was the white rice b/c it tasted like bagged rice versus fresh steamed rice, again that's just my personal choice and there were other sides that you could choose from. The fried chicken and greens was amazing as well, the crust was flavorful and crunchy then we dipped it in the house made gravy that you would use for the soul rolls which I would have never thought to put meatloaf, Mac & cheese and greens in an egg roll then dip it with the gravy and the flavors just all go together!!!! Lastly there corn bread was nothing I have ever had before, moist with a spongy texture and it was the perfect bit of sweet and flavor. So overall I would eat her again and recommend it to family and friends, sorry one more thing, the portions are well worth the price you pay for the plate, portions are spot on and not skimpy like some places. read more

This is not fancy dining, but good Southern cooking like Mama used to make. Don't come looking for atmosphere- the restaurant is small, just a few tables in a strip center storefront and they serve everything in styrofoam to go boxes. But the fried chicken was crispy and made fresh without alot of breading, the veggies were not overcooked, and there wasn't a ton of salt on everything. If you like salt, you might want to bring some or ask for a shaker (there wasn't one on the table) but to me, it was perfect. The cornbread wasn't overly sweet, but just sweet enough and very moist. My husband enjoyed his meatloaf. The fried okra was especially excellent. The desserts were excellent too - the banana pudding was creamy and the coca cola cake very moist. Everything tasted great. We saw Mr, A-Ok in the kitchen. This is an authentic black-owned small business. I recommend it. read more

With an outstanding menu full of favorite soul food entrees and sides, you won't be disappointed. Everyone has a favorite soul food dish. Perhaps for you it's the oxtails. Or maybe you find chicken fried dishes indigenous to Texas to be more your style. Me? I'm a big fan of smothered pork chops, and at this restaurant, two medium sized pork chops are doused in a delicious brown gravy. The chops themselves were moderately soft which I liked. But as much as the entree was solid, some of the sides really stole the show. A friend of mine urged me to order the cabbage here and it was probably my favorite side. Also standing out were the green beans with bacon and the greens already doused in vinegar. I did like that the black eyed peas had some smoky flavor from meat and the mac and cheese was a bit more pedestrian compared to the other sides. Also, I didn't order it, but the dirty fried rice definitely looks like a winner. Service was super pleasant almost to the point of asking me a bit too much if I liked the meal. I'm good! I hope I didn't give anyone the impression that I wasn't liking the meal. Any time I get to eat that much food I'm usually a happy person so my bad to the staff if they thought I wasn't enjoying it. Overall, this restaurant is just a touch below my favorites Tony G's and Bayseas, but it's definitely still in the top tier for soul food restaurants in San Antonio. My wife and I stopped by last weekend. I've been to all the soul food restaurants on Walzem and this place is the absolute BEST! I had the fried fish, Mac & cheese, sweet potatoes and cornbread. The fish was cooked perfectly along with everything else. The cornbread was so good that I ordered an extra piece with my meal. My wife had the oxtails along with fried chicken and greens. She couldn't stop eating it, but was nice enough to share some with me. Simply DELICIOUS! We also had dessert. The Kentucky butter cake is a MUST! Silky smooth, rich and yummy! When I say support local business, you can't miss out on this one. Fresh delicious food and great service. The chef Steven even came out to see how the food was. Leah the server was super sweet and knew the menu like the back of her hand. I couldn't decide what to order because everything sounded so good. But, I settled on the chicken and waffles and yes real chicken not those knock off places that serve strips. The breading was just right and well seasoned. The waffle had a nice crisp with just the right amount of softness. It paired very well even though this combination (sweet/salty) isn't my favorite.... I still had to try it. My friend ordered the chicken fried chicken with Mac n' Cheese, collards and cornbread. Amazing!!! This is some real southern cooking. The Mac n' cheese had a different twist, a mix of baked but super creamy. Collards were fantastic with a hint of vinegar... Mmmmm!!!
