Dishes Tried: - Special Banh Mi (with everything) - Cafe Sua Da (iced coffee) I have been a fan of Mr. Baguette since they were one small shop up in San Gabriel off Valley Blvd. I was even more excited when they opened here in OC and I didn't have to drive all the way up the 605 and 10 freeway. How does it compare to the original? It is just as good as I remember it. The bread is perfectly crunchy and hot out of the oven. What sets Mr. Baguette apart is their assembly of the banh mi. A lot of places just throw the ingredients in there and it just looks sloppy. A Mr. Baguette sandwich is assembled with attention to detail, the moment you slide it out of the bag you can tell. Their pate is perfectly salty and rich, while they differentiate their pickled veggies with a slightly sweeter tang than the other Banh Mi places. Amazing each bite. The downside, the prices have gone up significantly compared to Banh Mi Cali or Saigon Bakery. Over $4 dollars for a banh mi is a lot, so much so that I would have to come here to indulge in a sandwich. Where as I would go to Banh Mi Cali for my daily fix. read more

Maybe it's just me, I'm used to the 'ol Lee's sandwiches/banh mi Cali/banh mi Saigon experience. I was kinda confused by the menu, trying to figure out if phrases like "pork meatloaf" referred to "cha lua" since I just wanted a good Viet sandwich. I think I also came at a bad time, there were three employees and only one seemed competent for basic tasks like running a credit card or making a smoothie. I received my smoothie as a complete mess on all sides leaking (see pictures of when it was passed to me on the counter before I even touched it and one photo after I picked it up and saw the other side leaking too). They also aren't honest with their ingredients; the menu states that the smoothie is made from real strawberries but I observed them using a condensed strawberry flavoring from a bottle to make my smoothie. Mmm, hmm honey. Nope. Lastly, the sandwich was actually beautiful and very unique. I liked it, but idk if the struggle of waiting for someone to get help with running a credit card and a long wait for a messed up smoothie is worth the sandwich that is only a bit higher in quality than Banh Mi Saigon or other similar places. Oh my goodness, what happened to this place. The cashier HAN, which was the same person getting the sandwich that I had placed an order. A lady came after me ordering plain baguettes, so it's understandable to give to that lady before me. If I could give this ripped off place -5*, I would. I ordered 2 sandwiches (1 grilled beef and 1 Pork) and it costed me $17 dollars something. I was shocked and thought they made a mistake but they didn't. What is the hell on earth that a Viet sandwich costs $8.99 + tax. I may not mind about the price if food quality is great but it wasn't. The meat is dry and hard. They used frozen grilled meat then microwaved as ordered. Also, there was few pieces of veggies and a piece of pickle. The pork was old and smelled. I know, 2004 is soooo long ago, but hey, it's the reputation that a restaurant gets for making it onto the list that leaves a lasting impression. I've been here twice and had banh mi dac biet ($3.69). Both times have been consistently good and it is my favorite banh mi to order. I've also tried banh mi with eggs, pate, cha and thought it was just okay. I felt like it was flavorless since they didn't put soy sauce or any other condiments to give it some flavor like other places do. The good thing is that the eggs are made to order. So you get freshly cooked eggs in your banh mi! Usually asian banh mi places get lazy so they cook a bunch of eggs and just leave it there so it'll be faster to make a sandwich. She is one of the friendliest cashiers I've ever encountered in my life. just her cheerfulness alone helps my day start off right! It's crispy on the outside without being overly hard and crispy where it will tear up your mouth. The center is soft. Because of the way it is made, I would recommend eating the sandwich right away if you do get one cause it will be soft all around if you wait to eat it. I ordered the egg sandwich which was pretty basic since I wanted something simple that day for breakfast. Nothing really wow about it, but the bread itself. Overall: It's my new go to place for Banh Mi in the OC, but they don't get 5 stars yet because it's a little pricier than other places on Bolsa. I'll definitely be back to see if they're consistent and if their other items are as good. Food: 4 Special Banh Mi is a 12 inch baguette with ham, cha lua (pork meatloaf), mayo, pate, and veggies. What makes them stand out from other banh mi places is the baguette. It's crispy without being crumbly, it's chewy, and it isn't super buttery. They have 2 types of meat, so you can get the leaner ham or fattier, more traditional Saigon bacon. They give you a decent amount of meat, but they skimp a little on the veggies. My only main criticism is the price and the fact that they charge you to put veggies on the side unless you order 4+ Banh Mi. Service: 5 The cashier did a decent job explaining that they had 2 different types of meat, and she was polite and accommodating while writing down our order, which had little modifications. Food takes about as much time to come out as other places. Ambiance: 3.5 It's clean and well lit. I like that their kitchen is pretty open so you can see what's going on. I do wish that they had more seating available for people who want to eat in. I have been loyal to Lee's for a while now, so when someone suggested Mr. Baguette I was very reluctant - but decided to go for it. Mr. Baguette is an adorable Vietnamese deli with a French twist, with cute chefs hats and uniforms to tie back to the theme. The menu was very straight forward and very easy to read. It did throw me off a bit just because everything was written in English but I got over it. They offer banh mi, american sub sandwiches and croissant sandwiches. They offer different sizes for the banh mi and subs - 8 or 12 inches which is nice. Aside from the prepared foods, they also sell a limited amount of pastries. If you want to get fancy and make your own banh mi they have all the fixings here you can purchase down to the freshly baked baguettes. A bonus that I really appreciated about their sandwiches was their self severing jalapeño station. As much as I love my banh mi I just can't do the spice, and that two or so minutes of me fishing out those little pests and their seeds can be quite aggravating when your tummy is a rumbling. I always stick with the classic banh mi dac biet (the special) with extra pate. It really was love at first bite. Pate was creamy, bread was fresh and there was just enough cold cuts and deli meats - not too overwhelming and didn't leave me wondering where the rest of the sandwich was. My only critique would be to add more vegetables. A few things to note: - While their menu is written in English orders are usually taken in Vietnamese. - They get a lot of brownie points for how quickly they churn out these sandwiches but beware more times than not orders are called out in Vietnamese. So take note of that. If you are in a hurry I would highly recommend that you do not order a beverage - their orange juice especially. We went for the Pate Chaud which we were told was awesome. We ordered 2 (1 chicken, 1 pork) and saved them for later because we had already had lunch. They sat on the counter for 1.5 days when we finally stuck them in the oven for a reheat and eat. What was this amazingness?! Best Pate Chaud we have had! Buttery, flaky outside, extremely flavorful meat filling. There is a strong pepper flavor and a decent amount of onion. The chicken had more onion than the pork. The meat is a medium grind so not too dense. He loved the pork, she loved the chicken, we both agree both are awesome though. And that saying a lot after having them sitting around for nearly two days. We ended up going back before our flight back home (we were visiting family in the area) and grabbed a box to eat and share with others! Out of 3, 3 YUMS for the Pate Chaud. For a chain banh mi, this is my favorite. Their bread is soft and toasted nicely. Their fillings are fresh too. If you want STRONG Vietnamese coffee, this is the place to go for it. After my colleague mentioned about a new sandwiches joint that just recently opened up, so I have decided to swing by to check it out. This store locates in the small plaza on Bolsa Avenue, corner of Busha and across from Wells Fargo Bank. I ordered the specials (12" I believed it was) on the menu and the coffees. The sandwich was better than other stores, they do not turn into bricks after a period of time (if you know what I meant). Also, the coffee was great also, I do not drink coffee much hence I am not a heavy coffee drinker but this joint has more coffees (and smell good as well) than the other places. So as you can see, I am currently have 2 check-ins at this place; it is going to be okay. Just something new for a change. Why only 4 stars, although the first time I was eagerly wanted to try it out to see whether the sandwiches are good as advertised, they are better; not the best. They opened early so when I stopped by only one baker was on the clock. The second time I stopped by to buy some sandwiches, this time with more team members but the wait was not any better than the first. I ordered and waited, this time I ordered less but the wait was longer; wondering why. Move out of the way Lee's Sandwiches and Teo's, Mr. Baguette is taking 1st place for the new favorite Banh Mi spot. All the Vietnamese folks (family and older coworkers) in my life are raving about this place. I'm so obsessed with what I ordered, I don't even care to try anything else in the future tbh. Saigon Bacon with Sesame baguette and added some of the vegetables. It costs a little extra for the Sesame baguette, but it's WORTH. Disclaimer: Ok this may be an unfair Yelp review because I took this bad boy home and added slices of avocado to it and I'm never going to be able to see a banh mi the same again.
