Mr. Beef is the real deal! Before visiting Chicago, I didn't know "chicago Italian beef" was a thing. I was directed here after I started a yelp talk, asking the locals where to go. This place is dingy. I won't even say divey, because it is straight up dingy. You order at the counter and i would assume most people do take out, but there are some tables in the adjoining room. There is no public restroom which i really didn't like (you really need to wash your hands before and after eating a sandwich), and it was hotter than hell inside. Patrons at Mr. Beef come solely for the food, not the experience. I had the Italian beef combo which is hot sausage and shredded beef. It was topped with the garden veggies and was amazing. My husband had the bbq beef. The taste resembled more of a sloppy joe, but he loved it. We also split a cannoli and it was surprisingly one of the best cannolis I've ever had!! It's been 17 years since I was here last, and nothing's changed. Including the grease. The fries weren't bad, but like fine wine, the grease probably acquires a certain "vintage" as it ages. This is an awesome spot for Italian beef. The service is fast and efficient. I got an Italian beef, hot and juicy, with a side of French fries. The beef is super flavorful and tender. It just oozes with spicy mouthwatering flavor and the fresh bread just soaks up all the deliciousness. The hot peppers are great as well and they are a little different from other spots. I enjoy that the peppers had a great fresh crunch and flavor in addition to the tingling spice. The fries were also hot and crispy and salted just right. Mr. Beef lived up to the hype. The few times I've had Italian beef before, I've been underwhelmed. At Mr. Beef it's juicy, flavorful and the flavor pops with the hot peppers and oil. I x'd the cheese, onions, kraut and stayed true to the beef and got only the peppers full green long bell pepper two large slices. First bite juice dripping everywhere piping hot so good on a windy Chicago day.
