Yup I'm a super fan of The Bear and you knew if I was coming to Chicago, I was coming to Mr. Beef. Walking in to the place, it felt just like I was inside Season 1 Episode 1. Anyways, the line had two people hanging out the door so it wasn't too bad. We were ordering food within 10-12 minutes. The service was quick and simple, just be ready with your order. Food time. Fries were excellent. Don't skip em. The sandwich, well maybe I just don't like Italian beef sandwiches. I mean, the bread was sogged out (which I know is part of whole deal) while the beef inside was dried out and bland. But I've had several Italian beef sandwiches before (Als, Portillo's, etc) and always have the same experience, so maybe I just don't like Italian beef sandwiches lol. The best part was the sweet and hot peppers because that's the only way I can get some flavor and texture on this wet ole thing. I loved the eating area. It was all family style eating. Someone across from us mentioned that next time, I should order the sandwich dry with the jus on the side. Ding ding ding. That's what I'm gonna do next time. In the meantime, I'm glad I came.
I made it a mission to visit the infamous Mr. Beef on my Chicago trip and it was so worth it. The owner took care of everybody here during my visit and you can tell he genuinely cares about visitors. He mentioned there was going to be a wait and offered suggestions near the area for great Italian beef sandwiches for travelers that did not have the time to wait. I got the Italian beef and it was messy and delicious (that's how it's supposed to be!) I enjoyed every aspect of the sandwich, the beef, veggies, bread, and most importantly the au jus (juices from the meat). The dining area is one long table which allows for you to interact with others dining if you wish. They have their own parking lot on the side of the restaurant for those looking to drive there. Overall this was an excellent experience and the service alone was enough to make me want to come back.
As a fan of The Bear, I was obligated to make a stop at Mr. Beef during our Chicago trip. We showed up around noon and the place was already pretty busy, but the line moved relatively fast and we were eating within about 15 minutes of our arrival. We decided to share the Italian Beef sandwich, and of course we got that dipped. It's a huge, messy sandwich that absolutely lived up to my high expectations. It's got this rich, beefy flavor that I found completely irresistible, and the meat itself was just so tender and delicious. I'm so happy that Mr. Beef is so good. It would've been a real let-down if it had been anything other than stellar.
Good amount of seating and only waited 15~ minutes in line. Got the Italian beef with fries and onion rings. The Italian beef was nice and drenched and definitely flavorful. The sides of fries and onion rings were just okay and standard. Got three Italian beef and the two side for a total of 46$ cash
Old school sandwich shop vibe. Walk up to the counter, place your order and within seconds they have a sandwich ready for you. Got the combination which is the beef and sausage along with sweet and hot peppers (grizzly style) The peppers are not spicy so don't worry about extra heat. The sandwich itself is hearty and flavorful. It is a very wet sandwich and the bread gets soggy so it is meant to be eaten then and there. They hand you a stack of napkins and you will end up using all of them. I'm sure there is some kind of local hack in placing the perfect order so it may be good to ask around. Overall it was worth trying once. Expect to pay cash around 12 bucks a sandwich. If you use card there is a 4 percent fee. There is a communal dining area with tables set up and everyone shares the space. Worth trying.
The perfect quick, tasty, filling sando experience. At most a square block from the brown line, you can see the sign from the platform like a beacon. Sauce on the side would have been preferred, but the bread was so soft and the beef was so thinly sliced, it was more delightful than anticipated. Sweet peppers completed the flavor profile perfectly, and I grabbed a pineapple soda to enjoy in the dining room. The workers are kind and quick, and the space has the same charm as it does in THE BEAR. Big win.

Shout out to Celina G., whose review was great and helped make my experience awesome. My Overall Rating - 5 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - Mr. Beef's is a small, humble restaurant that was an area where you order, and a dedicated dining area which is one long communal table. Behind the counter, your food is made to order. The old school menu has items you can order, and all along the walls are photos of famous people who have visited. 1 Star. Service - The staff are super nice. The system is simple, you line up - know what you want to order so you don't hold up the line. They'll take your order, give you a stack of napkins (you'll need them), and then you pay. Bring cash if you don't want to pay extra fees. Mr. Beef is staffed by "good people", always smiling and making sure my order was right. 1 Star. Food - I came here for the Italian Beef with sweet peppers. The thinly sliced beef was super tender and packed a seasoned beef punch - in a good way. While I didn't order my sandwich dipped, the natural juices from the Italian beef were enough to soften my roll. Mr. Beef gave me a generous portion of beef, as some of them fell out as I took a bite. While they tried to escape, they ended up in my tummy. The onion rings were hot & crispy, fresh out of the fryer, and a good distraction from my sandwich. 2 Stars. Will I Return? - Yes. I went to visit Mr. Beef as a tourist, wanting to check out where several scenes from The Bear were filmed. I left after eating one of the best Italian Beef sandwiches I've ever had. The next time I come back, it will be for Mr. Beef, not The Bear. 1 Star.
After several years and all the hype, I finally tried Mr Beef. The ordering process was super easy and fast - walked up to the counter, ordered from the friendly staff and my Italian Beef and fries was ready in minutes. I decided to eat-in and the long tables next on the other side of the counter / kitchen was unique and fun. Even being well before noon, the room was almost full and clearly a mix of tourists and locals. The Italian Beef itself was very good but I wouldn't put it ahead of Johnnie's or even Al's. The fries were okay but not stand outs. Overall, a good experience.
Mr Beef is one of the best places to get an Italian beef sandwich in Chicago. Some of the scenes of the Bear were shot here and gives off a rugged vibe to the place. Upon walking in you will see pictures of many famous people who have walked in and dined here. We went on a late Saturday morning and didn't have a line. The sandwich was delicious and had plenty of meat on it.
Came here because one family member is a big fan of "The Bear". Literal hole in the wall establishment, limited seating, and hot as heck inside during a Chicago summer. Portable AC unit to try to help things, but honestly, I just wondered how the guys could keep making sandwiches over a hot grill all day long. Well, the result is...amazing. Get "The Bear" an Italian beef sandwich with sweet and hot pepper combo. It was delicious and we have yet to find any remotely plausible substitute here in LA. There is just one nod to the famous tie....a poster of "The Bear" on the wall.
I expected this place to be overhyped because of "The Bear" but still decided to try it. I was very wrong and so pleasantly surprised! I got the Italian beef sandwich and the meat was so tender. The bread was soft and absorbed the flavor to make it even better. I expected it to be overly salty with overpowering flavors but that was not the case. Hello Mr. Beef!! I know we are a dime a dozen, but we came because we love show, The Bear. We think the experience was 5 stars versus the actual Italian beef sandwich. Granted, we got the beef on the side and not the traditional "Chicago" way or "wet", but we also ordered a side of French fries which were bland...wheres the salt? The place was slammed!! It took us a good 30+ minutes to get through the line, but the guys behind the counter were hustling. There was one employee that ended up in a small verbal altercation with a patron (I'm sure he was provoked), but it was slightly off putting. The restaurant prefers cash, but we were going to pay via card but after witnessing the employees frustration we got cash from the ATM inside just to not have to potentially "deal with him". Anyways. It's definitely worth a try and the experienced but probably a once in a lifetime for us. read more

As a huge fan of the bear, this was everything. I felt like I was being transported into season 1. To be fully transparent, I am vegetarian so I didn't even order a sandwich. Was there for the vibes and got mozzarella sticks which were yummy. I'm not even going to suggest a vegetarian sandwich because it's called Mr Beef so it feels wrong... right? But watching the hustle bustle and seeing the posters on the wall was all the fun I needed. This place has lines that wrap around the corner and for good reason so do not be discouraged! read more

Obsessed with the Bear tv show so I knew I wanted to get to the filming location and experience it in person! You walk into the shop and order at the counter and they prepare it for you while you wait at the counter and you can either take it to go or sit in the dining room. My friend and I both got a combo sandwich which was Italian beef and Italian sausage. It was alotttt of meat and food but I enjoyed it! read more
Yeah... every visit back to Chicago includes a stop for an Italian beef. Typically that's at Portillo's or Buona beef or even Al's.. yeah move over other guys! Mr need ya hit the spot. Beef is juicy, giardeneria (sp) is crisp and tastes great! I've found me another hot spot here at Mr Beef! If you're in the mood for a Chicago classic give this joint a try! A Chicago staple Eamon here for a late lunch and following its popularity from the TV show the bear at this place does not disappoint. Easily better than a Philadelphia cheesesteak sandwich. It also beats out the rivals in the area like Portillos. The beef was tender and flavorful, and the bread was fresh. The employees are friendly, helpful, and patient . As a fan of the bear, I knew when I visited Chicago over the summer that this was a must visit place for me. We made sure that we ate lightly for breakfast and made our way over to the original location. There was a little bit of a line that we arrived after lunch because we had heard at lunchtime the place is slammed. I will let you know that when you go into main ordering area there is definitely no air conditioning, but the people behind the counter have been there for years on are the nicest around. I ordered a classic Mr. beef and also a diet Dr Pepper but the owner was so nice and called me dear and told me that he wasn't gonna give me a diet Dr Pepper because the fountain wasn't working properly that day. I really appreciated that after we paid for our Mr. beef sandwiches and of course we had to get some fries. We headed to the fancy dining room, which was air-conditioned and unusually hot day in September. We were happy that we were able to sit down on long tables and chat with other customers who are also there for the same reasonwe were there. They've been around for decades and I can see why and I will definitely return once I return to Chicago in February. read more
Was it worth it? As an experience, yes. I can say I've been there. The service was fun, brusque but very good natured. The sandwich was great although one of the peppers was just huge. Cannolli was nice too. Near 45 minutes L ride from Loyola, would go again if I was nearby but might not make the trip solely for Mr. Beef. read more
Tastes like most Italian beef & sausage in Chicago. Beef was on the dry side. Beef jus soaked in the bread was very good. I was more impressed with the house made giardiniera. It was flavorful and not too spicy. Service was polite and efficient. There's some seating but you should also plan to do carryout if it's packed. read more

Like most, I have been wanting to stop by and try since the bear aired. It's a typical feeling Chicago sandwich shop. They move you through quickly and have a strong system to get you your order fast. We got there for lunch at the right time because shortly after the line was at the door. I liked that the Italian beef was juicy though I could always use more juice hahah. It was a solid beef. The onion rings were also good - just out of the fryer. I was pretty full off just the sandwich so keep that in mind when ordering! I liked the long table in the connecting room - makes it easier to eat there and gives a community feel. People move in and out frequently so it's easy to find a seat. read more

Hands down the best Italian beef in Chicago. I know that like other pizza joints, this viewpoint might be hotly contested. Open for lunch only, the service is fast and friendly when you approach the counter. I recommend the Italian beef sandwich with giardiniera and get it dipped. So flavorful and for $10 you can't beat the price of any other place with how much meat they pack inside. The layout is very simple, love the one long picnic style bench in the "elegant dining room". Come here for the best beef, period. read more
We came on a weekday and it wasn't too busy. The shop is very casual and there is a separate room with a long communal table where you can eat. I liked looking at all of the picture and decor on the walls. There was a short line that moved quickly. I got the italian beef sandwich, which was disappointingly pre-made. The bread was soft and soggy from the aus jus. I ate it immediately, so I think it would've been better if it was made when I ordered it. The beef was good and there was a decent portion! NGL, it was probably one of my favorite eats while in Chicago and not because of The Bear, but simply due to the smackingly juicy and yummy sandwich: beef, hot&sweet with rootbeer. And I think, it was dipped. Soo good. By looking at it, you wouldn't think so but we truly devoured it and enjoyed it immensely. So there... Service was quick and friendly, and yes loud. There was a short line that moved fairly quickly. The ambiance was retro and the communal table was super elegant, facetiously. read more
That was easily the best spot we've ate at while in Chicago. We got a regular Italian beef and it made my mouth water watching them dunk it in the au just. No frills sandwich shop. The line was out the door, but moved very quickly! They take card, but prefer cash, so prices are slightly more with card. I got the italian beef with hot and sweet peppers and a cannoli. Honestly I thought this place would be mid, but it was great. I even went back on my last day to get it again. The second time I also got the onion rings and fries. The Italian beef is great, you can customize it as well, but I'd recommend trying it straight with the hot and sweet peppers. It wasn't spicy, but added a nice texture and flavor difference. It's greasy, but in a nice and comforting way. The cannoli was okay to me, but I'm not a big fan of cannolis so maybe you'd like it better. The onion rings were better than the fries and weren't the sad flimsy onion rings you might get. They're nice and crunchy, without the floppy onion pulling out and slapping you in the chin. Overall, a must visit for a good and comforting sandwich. I have been wanting to come here since I watched The Bear. We went for an early meal since we read it can get pretty busy with lines during lunchtime so we went at 10am (open time). The guy who took our order was very friendly and provided his recommendations. We ordered the classic beef sandwich and the combo. They had seating around the back (family style). The subs were really juicy and delicious! More wet than I'm used to and definitely a bit messy but they give you ample napkins. Would recommend bringing wet wipes as they don't have customer restrooms! Loved all The Bear references and I definitely felt like I was in the set! Would go again when I visit! read more

Not only was the food amazing but the staff is awesome and if you have ever seen "The Beef", it's literally just like that. They have a whole room just for eating (same room the arcade machine is in during the show) and plenty of seating. There were some film crews there when we went! read more

The excitement about not only the beef sandwich, but being the inspiration behind 'The Bear' is why I waited in line for 45 minutes. Y'all, you may have to wait a while, but it's worth it. Not being from Chicago made the experience even better. Once we stepped foot in the door it was just like a scene you'd see in The Bear. From the high intensity behind the counter to them slinging sandwiches left and right screaming at each other. It was truly the best sight to behold. This is it! Came here for the show, as I'm sure a lot of us have. I was impressed! Just ordered once Italian beef with sweet peppers for my boyfriend and I to split. This was a great sandwich! I should have asked for it to be extra soggy because those were my favorite bites. It felt a little light on the peppers but overall a solid simple but tasty sandwich. My partner and I shared an Italian beef w sweet peppers and hot peppers - TASTE: 3/5 - I was underwhelmed, but maybe it was just our sandwich, based on people's stellar reviews. Wish the meat was flavorful and that the peppers came through more. The atmosphere was cool because it's like "The bear". The food was ok, not sure if this is just the style, but I couldn't even pick up my bread as it was so wet and soggy it disintegrated in my hand. Also no bathroom to wash your hands after the wettest greasiest meal is a tough sell. read more

Finally made my way to this iconic Chicago staple, so worth the wait. The food is amazing, parking can be tricky because their small lot fills up fast but I didn't mind paying for street parking. The guys were move fast, stand out of line if you don't know what you want. I knew exactly what to get and how to order it as a first timer, they appreciate that. The quality of food is ridiculous, if not for heading to a Cubs game I would eaten more until I burst. Ordered the combination beef and fries, pretty much baptized in juice with extra Giardiniera, last meal worthy. Sat in the back and destroyed my sandwich. Got a shirt to go as a souvenir, don't forget to tip these guys they work really hard. read more
The service was abysmal and the food was just as bad. Came in on a Saturday afternoon and the guys working behind the counter were too busy talking behind the counter to take my order even though I was standing right in front of them. When you ask them for anything they look like they're being bothered and didn't want to help. The Italian beef was extremely wet, extremely greasy, and had no flavor whatsoever. The sitting area is open seating and you'd be lucky to get a spot to sit and eat. The only thing keeping this place open is that it was featured in The Bear. Had lunch here and had to wait on line for about 20 minutes. The Italian beef was tasty and the hand cut fries were fantastic. This restaurant has been featured in the Shoe "The Bear". You can buy your sandwich and eat in their dining room which features one long communal table. Lots of celebrity photos and autographs. If you are in Chicago this is a must stop. read more

My daughter insisted I hit up Mr. Beef as a huge fan of "The Bear" on FX. The restaurant is the inspiration for the show which is now in its third season. The location is considered downtown. I was dropped off by Uber, but it appears there is a parking lot beside. You cannot miss the signage with Pepsi logo. My early week late afternoon visit worked out well as no lines. It's a very unassuming place, just roll with it. The area was clear of debris on my walk up. Once inside enjoy all the photos from celebrities like Jay Leno and many more. The founder passed away and now his ex Coke Head son now clean runs the joint with a partner who was there. The menu board is easy to read and offers a variety of sandwiches. If it's your first time they will recommend the Italian Beef which I ordered with fries. I found the staff upbeat and friendly. They were also welcoming to the mention of the show. The sandwich rolled in paper came out quickly and the fries followed. The staff came back with ketchup. When they give you a stack of napkins don't think it's over kill. My Italian Beef was very drippy to the extent it was on my pants and coat prior to unrolling the paper...YIKES! I moved to the seating area which is adjacent to the counter. It's communal seating, so cozy up and make a new friend. If you're interested in the history of "The Bear" there is an article framed. The sandwich was hot and loaded with beef. Then smothered with peppers and yes, Olive Oil! Very tasty, but likely too much hype. The crispy fries were much better than anticipated. The other guest at the table looked like regulars. A four stars seems about on target for me with a suggestion on serving customers eating in. Put the sandwich in a bag, or on a tray. My dry cleaning bill soured my visit, but I would return. read more
