When I lived in Richmond, I used to come down to Mr. B's in Chester once every two months with my wife and grandmother. Now that I live right down the street, I have to try and limit myself to stopping by about once a week (even though I went three days in a row last week). Everyone at Mr. B's is amazing. They have handled COVID extremely well, upping their takeout game to great success. The food is so comforting. Fried chicken, chopped steak, smothered pork chop, meatloaf are my faves. The carrot soufflé is absurdly good. I can't say enough good things about them. If you haven't given them a try, do it soon. While on my quest towards finding new soul food places in RVA, I stumbled across Mr. B's. This location was unique to me because there aren't too many soul food places in Chesterfield to begin with, so my excitement for coming here was pretty high. But because I grew up on soul food, my expectations for the taste of the food were equally as high. How did my experience go? To find out, read below. The Good: Short Wait- After placing my order, the food came out of the kitchen well within 20 minutes. This was a good thing because the restaurant was essentially full at the time I placed my order The Not So Good: Price/Portion Size- I ordered the Fried Catfish, Mac n Cheese and Greens. The cost of my meal was roughly $13. This cost came with only one piece of catfish. If I went to a place like Mama J's, I could have gotten an additional catfish fillet and the same number of sides for only $2 extra. Taste of Catfish- The catfish came out of the kitchen hot, but while it wasn't a bad tasting catfish, it also didn't have that definitive taste so good it will make you slap ya mama kinda goodness that Mama J's catfish has. The Not So Good: Service- The server lacked personality and hospitality. After she dropped the food off at my table, she never bothered refilling my drink. I had to wait 20+ minutes after finishing eating for her to give me my bill. And after receiving my bill, I had to wait another 5+ minutes for an employee to ring me up to pay for the bill. Taste of Greens and Mac n Cheese- The Greens lacked flavor and I had to splash a liberal dose of vinegar to make the dish somewhat enjoyable. The Mac n Cheese was dry and also lacked flavor. These sides were a huge letdown for me. Overall- Because of the high ratings that this restaurant had received from other customers, I looked forward to seeing what the hype was all about. Sadly, my experience was far from the best that I've ever had at a local soul food restaurant. If I were to go back again, I would definitely order another dish with different sides. Fast forward to today I called at 7:38pm wanted to place an order and the gentleman in the other end said hold on and came back and said we stop taking orders at 7:30. For my sides I ordered mac&cheese, collards, and potato salad. The mac&cheese was really bland. Luckily, I had my order to go, so I doctored it up. The collards and potato salad was hitting. This was my first visit here. I have heard and read a lot of great things about this place so I thought I would give it a try. I got the Club Sandwich with a side order of potato salad and Mac and Cheese. Not a fan of any of it. The bacon on the Club was very tough. It was more like beef jerky than bacon. It was a good size sandwich and besides the bacon was flavored ok. The potato salad just was not to my liking. A bit too mashed to me. The Mac and Cheese looked delicious, but I actually tasted very little flavor to it. Not very cheesy, but lots of what I think was butter, so much you could pour it out the container. The price was too expensive, in my opinion. Just shy of $12. Clean. Well lit. Nice location. Now for the real stuff! I've been on the road in West Virginia and Virginia for the last month. YELP is my best friend when it comes to finding a local place to eat. I had to come to Chester to meet with clients and was looking for a lunch spot and found Mr B's. It sounded like the kind of place I was looking for - local, not part of a chain, and southern-style cooking. OMG! The food here was SOOOOO delicious! I opted for the fried chicken (white meat), with sides of cabbage, stewed tomatoes, and an extra side of potato salad. The chicken was fried to order and so it took a few minutes, but I was not in a hurry. It was piping hot and seasoned PERFECTLY. Not a lick of salt or pepper was needed. I asked for hot sauce and didn't even need that. I don't know who his meat purveyor is, but the chicken appears to me a "normal" chicken - not one of those oversized things that are huge and tasteless because of hormones, GMO feed, etc. The breast was juicy as well as flavorful and the skin was golden brown and crispy and not at all greasy. The wing was crispy in all the right places. Now for the sides. Stewed tomatoes, as prepared by my grandmother, was a favorite of mine growing up. I didn't know anyone prepared this dish any more, as I considered it an ole timey dish; however, I have been very pleased to see it on many menus here in Virginia and I have tried it every time I saw it. This version was simply The Best of those I've recently tried. The difference: it was not thickened with bread but with corn starch. My grandmother used to make it both ways and I preferred the corn starch thickened version. Again, it was seasoned perfectly, with just the right amount of sugar. The potato salad was so delicious, I found myself using my finger to scoop the last bits lingering to the side of the bowl. It was what I call, the mashed potato variety of salad. NOTHING more was needed - no salt, pepper, mayo, NOTHING! I love cabbage most any way I can get it. This was just straight forward boiled cabbage - no meat or oil that I detected but just delicious. It, too, was perfectly seasoned. Nothing else was needed. My only disappointment: the roll. Not sure what I expected. Perhaps I wanted my Aunt Clara's rolls to go along with this dinner which mimicked one of my grandmother's delicious meals, but that is not fair to Mr B. The roll was good but not outstanding, in my opinion. It wasn't fat and fluffy like I prefer my rolls. I ordered a piece of lemon coconut cake to go and took a bite before packing it away. OUTSTANDING! Mr B's uses a bakery for his desserts which included Sweet Potato Pie, Pecan Pie, Bread Pudding, Red Velvet Cake, Chocolate Cake, and Coconut Cake. They all looked so delicious. If you are ever passing through Chester, don't hesitate to have a meal at Mr B's. If you enjoy good, southern style cooking, then you won't be disappointed. I wasn't. read more

Warning this is not a review about the food. My crab cake sandwich was wonderful! This is about customer service. I'm new to the area and decided to check out Mr. B's. The lady at the counter taking orders had the worst attitude. Said to me "we close at 6, last orders go in at 5:30 (it was 5:25)" I said "well hello, thank you. I have about 5 minutes to order...glad I made it." She rolls her eyes and answers the phone. I order. I wait. I get my food and forget to ask about my drink. By this time the door is being locked it's 5:48...I call the restaurant while waiting outside the door to ask for my drink (no one will come to the door). They say "oh ok I'll bring it" the owner (I assume) brings my drink to me and is sweet as pie. Long story short don't work at a place if you don't want to be there...messed up my whole experience. I ordered two dinners and desserts from Mr. B's and the total came to almost $40. This is a little expensive, but a price I'm willing to pay if, I get what I came for. I expected to go to Mr. B's and get a delicious Southern, Home-cooked style meal. Instead all I got was disappointment. The Good: Let's start with the good. The restaurant was clean and the workers were nice. And to be fair the chicken and sweet potatoes were good, but that's where it ends. The Bad: So on to the bad. The pound cake was so dry, it felt like it could choke somebody. The strawberry cake was entirely too sweet. I like sweet but you couldn't even taste the strawberry. All you could taste was sugar. The Ugly: Then there were just the unforgivable things. If there is one thing you expect from a good soul food place, it's great macaroni and cheese. Well, you can forget that at Mr. B's. I honestly think they used Velveeta and that's it. That mac and cheese was watery and disgusting. I also ordered stewed tomatoes, one of my favorite sides. When I looked at it there was a puddle of oil sitting right on top. I couldn't even stomach it. And to top it all off they gave us old fried fish that seemed like it had been reheated in the microwave and did not taste good at all. If a soul food restaurant can't make mac and cheese and fried fish, they need to hire new cooks. Period. Do yourself a favor and save your money. Don't bother with this place. Just ordered a couple Mr. B's dinners for the first time and I am very impressed. Meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans were delicious. The fried shrimp were cooked perfectly, as were the collard greens. To top off this delicious dinner, both the yellow cake and the coconut cake were out of this world. Mr. B's presented as clean well kept restaurant. Our waitress was great the entire time. She kept our drinks refilled and was able to provide suggestions for the food. I ordered the smothered pork chops, mashed potatoes and corn. What stood out to me the most is that the waitress came back and said, the cook didn't like how the corn looked and asked if we wanted something else. That's huge for me, because it tells me that you not only care about the quality but also the presentation. So I ordered green beans instead. Moving on.... hubby had the ribs, Mac n cheese, collard greens and yams. I was thoroughly impressed and so was he. The yams were soft and everything was seasoned so well. Another thing that stood out was the presentation of the food. It didn't look "thrown" together. I would definitely revisit for other menu items. WOW! I drove by this place on a Tuesday when they're closed and instantly got a hankering for some soul food. Thankfully, I went the next day for lunch. I love-love-love their: fried catfish! I had my with greens so good I drank the leftover liquid. The green beans were equally delicious. Don't judge me now, but I HAD TO try a 2 pieces of fried chicken as well. I am 50, and now angry with my 82 year old momma, for not making any of this stuff for me when I was a child. (Jest). I cannot fully express how disgusting my experience was with this restaurant. I read reviews on DoorDash that gave this place glowing recommendations. I ordered fried chicken , which was touted as being so amazing, a bbq sandwich for my son and a slice of pineapple coconut cake and one of red velvet. My chicken was so dry, tough and tasteless I was shocked. It was so tough to chew I gave up. It looked like it had been under a heat source for days and it turned to jerky. The Mac and cheese was over cooked mush with zero flavor. The texture was so nasty I did not bother adding salt to make it taste better. My son's sandwich was unappealing and his fries were limp . I thought surely the cake would be redeeming, but NOPE. There were little gummy specks in the red velvet (I'm scared to know what they were). The icing tasted like it had soured. The coconut pineapple was inedible, just like the chicken. To say I'm disappointed is a massive understatement. To pay $45 for inedible food really sticks in my craw. I cannot overstate how gross everything was. I prayed for three days that I had not gotten food poisoning from the few bites I took of that shoe leather chicken. We tried to support a Minority small owned business and got SCAMMED...Mr. Harold Butler refuses to honor gift certificates my sorority purchased at their restaurant. We tried to use our certificates today and was told they were expired. Before we were told this I can over hear an older lady in the back saying next time you do something like this make sure you put an expiration date on them. Mr. B came out from the back and said these certificates are expired. I said there's no expiration date on them how are they expired? He repeated I'm sorry they're expired . I usually enjoy most food from Mr. B's. Negatives: Only 2 things - sometimes their food is too salty (and I eat salty foods so if it's too salty for me...) and their fried chicken is not that good. I've had much better. The gravies they use are great. Chopped Steak, turkey and Dressing, pork chops are usually my go tos. You can't go wrong with the carrots souffle, yams, green beans.
