Excellent spices, well cooked and she said the Mac and cheese was good. The chicken was a little dry for my taste. I got the braised oxtail ($26) and it was worth every single penny and every single minute of the half hour it took to get out to me. Literally fell off the bone and the rice and beans are excellent. It was a touch sweet, so maybe a hit of Serrano pepper would make it perfect. The veggie side was a nice touch and made this a great lunch plate (lots of food, too! They don't skimp on the portions). The service is slow, especially for a lunch rush at a corporate park (Howard Hughes), but well worth the wait, if it's not 110° and you don't have to rush back to work. My go-to for a to-go order is the three tamale combo that comes with one side, or two sides for a slight upcharge. Dining hack - slather some of your mac & cheese on top of the beef tamales to enhance the flavor even more. Long ago, I was taught that the definition of 'hot tamale' is someone who struts her stuff in a form-fitting miniskirt and thigh high boots. But now I see that DTLA's hot tamales also cause people to stare, whistle, and make appreciative catcalls.
