Their hotpot is pretty good, but DO NOT try their sushi all-you-can-eat cuz it's a scam. Every aspect of this experience seemed to have gone wrong. Our orders were frequently messed up, and the amount of food they gave us didn't make sense either. My friend got one order of cream cheese wontons, and they ended up giving us 16 pieces. Pretty sure it's usually 4-6 pieces per order. All of us at the table had to help eat some so that we wouldn't waste food. Not sure if they had the wrong order again or if they were trying to feed us with cheaper food to make us full so that we couldn't eat more sushi. Furthermore, the service was so slow. With hotpot, people can still get ingredients on their own and eat something while waiting for the meat to come. With our sushi orders, each took a long time to be made, and we were limited to three orders each time. We already got a bit impatient waiting, but what was unbelievable was when they said our time was up and wanted us to leave. I hadn't had enough food and this was supposed to be an all-you-can-eat. I've never experienced that in other all-you-can-eat places. We came to celebrate our friend's birthday, but this experience really ruined it, and we regretted our decision to come here. I regret not visiting Mr. Shabu at Orem a helluva lot sooner. They are top tier and one of my new favorite places to go. Mr. Shabu in Orem is a hot pot restaurant open 7 days a week and they are near all kinds of other shopping spots on University Parkway. I have been to one other hot pot restaurant and it was one in Salt Lake County. I was super excited to get to see what Mr. Shabu was all about but it definitely blew my expectations out of the park. First, they get a few bonus points for being open on Sundays. This is so nice and in my opinion, the best time to go, as it seemed to be less crowded than it would've on any other day of the week. The other thing I loved about this is that they have lunch hours and dinner hours, which help determine pricing and menu options. If you go during lunch, you will not have as many options. However, it is only in the low $20s to eat there for lunch, which I think is a total steal. So I stopped there on a Sunday afternoon to eat lunch. I got seated immediately because there was only a few parties in there, and got started with drinks and appetizers. To my knowledge, the drinks do cost extra. However, anything else you order is already incorporated to the unlimited, set price. I started off with the Tonkotsu broth and the gyoza. I was really happy to see that they had Tonkotsu broth, as that is my favorite to get and the last hot pot place I went to did not have Tonkotsu. I also ordered a tray of beef and a tray of pork. I like how thinly sliced it is, so that it cooks well in the broth and the overall quality of the meat was pretty good. Up at the bar area, they had an assortment of noodles and fish options, lots of vegetables and sauces to choose from as well. Even though it was a buffet, I felt like the staff did a great job at ensuring it was still a clean area. Later on in the meal, I elected for the cheese wontons, which were great as well. Truly, I do not have enough good things to say about my visit at Mr. Shabu. The staff was good about checking in and I find it very fun to have the hot pot experience. The food was all great and the atmosphere is fun, clean and inviting. I am trying to drag a bunch of my friends there and I will definitely be back again very soon. read more

Mr. Shabu's quality has dropped. They used to have what seem to be fresh sushi and good meat, but things have changed. While eating and ordering the meat that waiter who seemed to be the manager would not stop coming over asking me to go to the salad bar. He seemed upset when I refused to go and I would order more meat. He would also give me more lamb than I would ask for when all I really wanted was beef. We also found hair in our food and he tried to deny the hair at first, but after insisting and showing him the hair he just said he would swap it out. We declined and ordered tuna rolls and it looked like they scooped it right out of a tuna can. It looked horrible and tasted horrible as well. Super low quality and invasive service. Went to Mr. Shabu for a second time for dinner tonight and it never fails to impress us! Both times we went we got All You Can Eat Sushi and were seated almost immediately and food comes out FAST and high quality with attention to detail. We had a very nice lunch. There was 4 of us. There was a lot of interesting options of things to cook in the broth. There was a good set of available broths. There are fewer meats available than at dinner, but that's expected and is reflected in the price. The meat was all solid and between the meat and other things had an excellent meal. We came in right at 11:00 on Friday. We had other things we needed to be doing by 1pm so we came when they opened. Everything was ready to go. However, over the course of the meal having a server come to the table was lacking. We bussed our dirty plates because nobody came and we saw the carts we could put things in. We ended up going to the front desk to pay after waiting 15 minutes with nobody in sight to bring the bill. During all this time there was only one other table with people in the restaurant. There was more than one server. Until the near complete lack of service gets cleaned up, it just can't get 5 stars. read more

All the ingredients are there, specifically for Chinese hot pot. I can't think of anything else that may have been missed. On top of that, the service there is amazing! I love Shabu and Mr. Shabu did not disappoint. This restaurant was clean and very welcoming. The food was on point. Some say pricey, but I found the cost for the dinner on par with upscale AYCE. I appreciated that it centers around the hot pot. All the items from the self service bar are items that you cook in the hot pot, but it is not a salad bar. The broths were delicious. I read through some of the negative reviews on Yelp, and was actually wondering if they didn't come from some of their competition. I have been there several times now since discovering it about 3 months ago, and have had nothing but excellent service, and excellent food, and have enjoyed myself every time. I would go so far as to say that their sushi is some of the best that I have ever had, and I have been to sushi restaurants all over the world. There is NO Question that the place gets busy, because it is so good, and therefore generates lots of customers, but reading the negative reviews makes me wonder if they are just negative people, impatient people, or just want to find fault in something and then magnify it, or intentionally trying to sabotage due to some other motivation. As to expensive--not any more than other sushi restaurants I have been to. If you think its expensive, my advice is to eat at a less expensive establishment and enjoy their burgers. read more

Not every member of your party has to get a hot pot, they can also get sushi. Not a lot of places offer the either or... So I was really excited they did. We got the 911 roll that came to the table flaming. The sushi was so good!!! Most places try to over stuff your rolls with rice when it comes to all you can eat. But their standard is so high. The hotpot wasn't very good and was flavorless. Their meat has a sour taste to it, like it's been left out for too long and is about to go bad. They have a $5 sushi offer after 8pm for the first 30 customers, but they never stated that you had to go sign up at 5pm. This is incredibly misleading and disrespectful to people who get there right at 8pm without this information. You also cannot call to be put on this "waiting list", you must show up in person. We thought it was "first come first serve" (as the advertisement says "for the FIRST 30 customers". Restaurant is clean for the most part, but the food is not noteworthy and is borderline disgusting. Love the concept and thought it was a fun experience. However everyone felt the broth was hugely lacking flavor and that the cost was insanely overboard for what you get. We all ordered the tonkatsu broth because our server said it was by far the best. For a place built around its broth the lack of flavor there was surprising and disappointing.
