I like Mr. Submarine. I like the Super Mr. Sub and the Roast Beef. Both are very simple with shredded lettuce, tomatos, onion and a light dressing/oil. I usually have them hold the oil so I can save the 2nd half ot the gigantic King-sized sub for lunch the next day so it doesn't get soggy. I go to Mr. Submarine on days when I'm feeling cheap and Perry's overly-generous portions are just too much meat to deal with. read more

The many times I walk out for work to scour the urban jungle for provisions and end up at Subway or Pot Belly's, I'm getting burned out from. After turning the coupon guy on the corner down for so long, I decided to take him up on his coupon. They are quick and fast. You might feel like a sardine in a can while standing in line, but it moves fast with the "samich" builders making as fast as they are called out. I typically get the King Gyro Sub, which is good. You might want to order it "easy sauce" because the middle slides out of the bread from too much sauce. Yes, just say "easy sauce"...they'll know what you mean! Nothing fancy, just quick and filling. This used to be a great place to get my sandwiches. But now I'm not sure if it's under new management but they don't listen. I've gotten my sandwiches wrong 3 times already. And with my allergies once they add onions which I ask that they remove I can no longer eat the sandwich. So I've wasted my money 3 times. A tasty way to add 1000 calories at lunch while under the guise that it might be healthy. The soups and salads are good too. Mr. Submarine is a staple of the outskirt neighborhoods of the city and some of the more urban areas. I wished they'd open one up in LP/LV. I get a 7" sub, chips and a drink (I get the Strawberry Sunkist) all for $4.97 with a coupon. You can't find anywhere else in the Loop that'll give you a deal like that. I lean toward their meatball sub w/ cheese, but their other subs with veggies are also delicious. They also have pretty decent soup and chili! There's no options here so if you don't like what they are offering, this is not the place for you. Just moved to the north end of the city. WOO HOO! I commute via CTA and was actually looking for a hot cup of coffee at a workable transfer point. This joint was just at the bottom of the stairs. They open at 6:00. They weren't selling breakfast sandwiches. They were selling lunch. This seemed like a darn good idea. I got a full size 12" turkey. Their sandwiches are tasty and the bread is fresh and local. They use Italian dressing. The subs are very straightforward, and affordable. In fact, a little, premade, sandwich at my fave coffee supplier costs almost as much as this 12" incher with chips and soda! Do the math. I'm crappy with numbers as well as a little loose with my cash, most of the time, but this made a lot of sense to me. During the first hour of work I busted out half for breakfast. My co-worker commented on it because it smelled amazing (and it did smell amazing). Being socially inept and always trying to do the right thing; I offered her the other half. I felt good about being friendly (for about a second) but I, sort of, regretted my own generosity because I just got hungrier after my half AND now I have to get my actual lunch at the cafeteria with the rest of the schnooks. So what if it's not good for you---Mr. Sub is delicious. I wanted to give it 3.5 stars, but that's okay. Three cheers to the guy that passes out coupons on the corner of Washington and Wells to get you a less than $5 lunch of a regular sized sub, chips and a drink. My co-workers go here all the time. The bread is never stale and the mayo/sub sauce combination gives it this sweet delicious flavor. I also have to say that I appreciate that they have cans of Diet Dr. Pepper because the fountain drinks are RC brand and who still likes RC? ew! The prices are super low, the staff is efficient and friendly, and the subs are great, especially at lunch time. Also, they have RC Cola, which is always funny. This review is based on my rating on a visit during their $1 sub promotion. There isn't much to say. The sandwich is probably similar to one that your mom made you for lunch when you were a kid. The sandwich is a good 8 inches long, but is mostly bread and light on meat. Again, this is during their $1 promotion, so I doubt that they are supposed to be made like this. Normally, they would be $4 which I think is steep for a lettuce sandwich. The employees were a little cranky, but I would be too since it was busy and some customers were rude. read more

How hard is it to make sure mayo & mustard cover fully the side of the bread loaf with their spatulas? Or cheese slices that are spread evenly across the sandwich platform? Meat that situated optimally across the area of the canvas? & the same for the veggies, which are severely skimped? You'd think herbs, salt, & pepper would liven the bland taste by now. For the price, good subs......I had the Italian Beef, it was pretty tasty and filling. However, there's no confusing it for a gourmet san- definitely deli style with everything processed. I had the roast beef sandwich and it was really delicious. I would put Mr. Submarine in a separate class from Potbelly's, Jimmy John's and Subway. I don't mean this in an insulting way, but it's more of a run-of-the-mill sub sandwich--like if you went to the grocery store and made yourself a sandwich. That's actually a really good thing, because it's a lot faster, cheaper and more convenient than making the sandwich yourself, but the taste is just as good. It's also helpful that an employee was standing outside on the street handing out coupons. A couple of my coworkers had issues with expired coupons...but then we got back to our office and there were expired coupons placed inside our bags with our sandwiches. Your enjoyment will most likely hinge on your opinion of the bread: I call it tastily hearty; others may opine it's tough or chewy. Regardless your taste buds, your jaw's burning cals with the chew-ercise. I'm a girl watcher: Best part for me is the sidewalk seating, shaded by trees.
