When one lives in the suburbs - even close in suburbs like Wyncote it's just a given that few restaurants are as good as in the city - even if a place is actually in Philly. Makiman is an exception.We have been eating here for years and they are consistently good - from sushi and sashimi to tempura, seaweed salad (hyper yum!). They have a roll they call valentine that's shaped like a heart and made with pink soy wrappers rather then nori. My wife can't stand nori but loves valentine and other things in soy wrapper so this might be a good deal for those who don't like nori and think they don't like sushi... In the winter they have (I guess all year but I just eat it in the winter) Bi Bim Bop in a stone pot which is great because you get a lot of different stuff (beef, an egg, veggis etc) in one dish and the hot pot makes the rice that is in the bottom of the pot nicly crispy. If you know me, then you must be well aware that I love sushi joints. My friends and I took a random trip down to Philly for lunch since we were in the area and we stopped by Makiman mainly because Yelp was saying that it was a decent place. We walk in and the place is kinda small. Sushi bar in the front of the place but then it opens up to a decent-sized dining room all decked out in traditional Japanese decor. It's a pretty overall cozy vibe though. I get the Lunch Sushi Deluxe Special (I'm a poor college kid so anything that says "special" is gonna catch my eye) and it was pretty good! It was an assortment of California rolls with 8 pieces of nigiri. Some of the nigiri was pretty chewy, but apart from that it was actually really good! Very fresh, cut precisely, and slightly melt-in-your-mouth. Oh and the best part? It's BYOB. We live local and decided to eat here after work yesterday. I haven't been here since it was Makiman Sushi. This is a BYOB. Iced tea was listed on the menu, yet they were out of it when we tried to order. I chose the steamed shrimp dumplings as an appetizer. This arrived quickly. The dumplings were tiny! The filling was so finely minced that I really couldn't differentiate any flavors at all. I ordered the Shrimp and Scallop Teriyaki. This was served on a sizzling platter with a side of rice. I chose brown rice. This platter was odd. There were large chunks of potatoes and carrots included with the seafood. Strange. The carrot and potato chunks were barely cooked. They would have been more at home with a roast beef dinner, not a Japanese Teriyaki plate. The scallops and shrimp were cooked just right though. My boyfriend had California Roll, which he said was meh. Staff was polite, service quick, prices average. Restaurant was a tad shabby, especially the restrooms. Would probably not return. read more

This is one of my favorite places to get sushi. The staff is always friendly and fast. The food is always fresh and delicious. I've yet to have a bad meal there. Along with their Japanese dishes they have my homeland, South Korea, dishes as well. So maybe you're in the mood for sushi and maybe your friend or whoever isn't. They have Korean popular dishes such as bi bim bap(vegetarian version avaliable), they have the very popular meat dish, bulgogi! Oh and it is byob too if you are wanting to bring something extra to drink. The only possible negative thing I could say about this place is that the seating area isn't very big but I've yet to have to wait in a line to be seated as I'm usually around during lunch time. I have only done take out at Mr Sushi. My order is always ready by the time I get there which is usually before the allotted time (15-20mins). Workers are usually nice and immediately greet you. Sushi is always fresh and pretty average in taste. Prices are normal for sushi in my opinion. Never ate inside but it appears to be very small. read more

Still going strong as a good sushi place to eat at in fox chase area. I parked right beside the restaurant but it said wendys or temple parking only. Parked there for 1.5 hours without consequence. The lunch special was a great deal, but I guess once you add in the tip its not really saving money anymore haha. Im not sure if you can take out the lunch special, but I am guessing not. Maybe cause we came in from the other side, but there is a median in the parking lot that makes it weird to park. The food is okay. As I recall, the rolls were pretty but I barely remember which ones we ordered. I think it was the NE Viking, Sunburst, Macnabb and Yellow Stallion. I didn't like the yellow tail at all. For weeks I've been craving sushi... Clearly since the shutdown my favorite local sushi spot has been closed. Found mr. Sushi many months ago when I would drive to work but never went inside so after I did some research a few days ago and found out they delivered to my zip through door dash, I was more than excited and prayed for the sushi to be good for as much as I researched ratings. My prayers were answered by recent reviews from others who had the same deep craving I did! So I went through thier menu and ordered the rolls I know I'm familiar with and waited for my food to arrive. To my surprise the delivery was super fast and my driver was quick with no contact. Part of my order came with both soup and salad which was a bonus because it doesn't say that on the menu (yay more food!) I tried each item one at a time and I was instantly HOOKED. either I was missing sushi real bad or they seriously put some TLC into making those rolls haha! I will more than likely order again and will tell friends and family about it. I know many who need thier fix and for me, this place definitely has me on as a customer during quarentine and likely long after. After hearing about this place for a year or so I finally had the chance to check it out. I went with 3 friends. We all got something different and we were all quite happy with our meals. 2 of the 3 friends I dined with have been here before so I knew I was in for a treat. Sure the place is small, but it's not an uncomfortable small. The metal chopsticks are better suited for those who are comfortable using them, although they do have 3 lines on them, which do help for better gripping. At least they do have wooden chopsticks as another option for customers! My meal was delicious, from the salad to the specialty rolls! I love the ginger dressing they use and the more, the better! The miso soup was great, full of flavor and not salty at all. The rolls were so great! I got a spicy Tuna, Avocado/Cucumber, Salmon/Avocado and as a treat I wanted to try the Tuna on Tuna. The rice on all the rolls were so tightly packed & the fish was so fresh. The Tuna on Tuna was wonderful. The tuna just melted in your mouth! It was like BUTTAH! I love my sushi, but I did notice a lot of other interesting things on tables around me! The tempura looked wonderful! I had a lovely experience here and will most definitely be back. So we went for the all you can eat, which really is a misnomer. They will only bring out 3 orders at a time (so if you're getting nigiri, that's 6 pieces), and we waited anywhere from 45min to an hour for each order to come out. In all, we were there from 5:30 to 9, and had 3 orders of sushi each, some oversalted and extremely fatty galbi, and the free dessert. Service overall was pretty poor - we had to continually flag down the waitress to bring more tea and ginger, and water was never refilled. Apparently the waitress and sushi chef were too busy chatting to run a halfway decent restaurant. As far as the actual food goes, it's decent but not the freshest. You get what you pay for I guess. The only way this place becomes manageable is if you treat it as a place to drink, with the option for mediocre sushi. read more

Don't get the "all you can eat" unless you plan on staying here until closing time because they take 1 hour in between your orders. Also there's a list of rules to this "buffet" including charging you 1 dollar for every piece of rice or sushi you leave, restricting you to 1 order of salt-saturated kalbi, and 3 orders(6 pieces of sushi total, or 3 rolls) at a time. As for the quality of the sushi, its decent for philly standards but by no means is it impressive. I was never a huge sushi fan. It kind of goes back to when I was six and had some salmon and then...yada, yada, yada...I don't eat any seafood except for tuna fish from a can for the next 15 years. Peer pressure from several directions got me past the whole raw fish gross out thing and now I actually enjoy sushi. It's not often my first choice and I'm not usually the one to recommend getting it, but I'll go along and I'll happily eat my crunchy spicy tuna rolls or try some eel rolls because I'm adventurous like that. Makiman is the exception. I will suggest going there. Often. And now that they've got All You Can Eat on Mondays - rules and restrictions apply, inquire within - it's even better than before. On my most recent visit, I started off with my standby spicy tuna roll, with spicy tuna and avocado, and one more risky (for me) roll: the Cap N Crunch. This tempura roll has shrimp, which isn't my favorite, but it was outstanding. In fact, we finished the night with another one because it was so good. Also tried the Tropical (mango), Korean (kimchi), Tiger (white tuna) and Oshinko (pickled radish...interestingly good). The staff is nice and the service is good. Our waiter couldn't remember some of the ingredients in one of the rolls so he finished the description off with "meow, meow, meow" and went to find out. When you're ordering the All You Can Eat, make sure you're hungry or ordering the more expensive rolls. At $28/person, it would be easy to not get your money's worth. And when you're done at Makiman, head across the parking lot to Custard's Last Stand. read more

I've got to hand it to Makiman for some efficient service. I drink a lot of water with dinner. I might as well be trying to drown my food just to make sure the animal aspects of it won't come back to life and try to do some damage to my internal organs as a last act of vengeance(and I do realize this makes even less sense in the context of seafood but bear with me). Even at my ridiculous water-consumption rate, the server never let the glass get any less than half full. She did an amazing job. The sushi was really delicious and very reasonably priced. Tack this fact onto the fact that it is a BYO and you've got a winning combo. Their rainbow roll is very tasty. The shrimp tempura maki is easily on par with Center City establishments. The Cap'n Crunch roll was...silly. In all honesty, it did not blow me away. The salmon and tuna sushi were rockin'. I tried the green tea tempura ice cream and I've got to say, they overdid the strawberries on top. It was a little overwhelming. I (as well as one other friend) thought the food was just awful, but the two others enjoyed themselves. I almost feel bad writing this review Cons: -Sketchy location -I ordered 6 piece sashimi. They gave me 5 piece nigiri. Makiman Sushi is the ONLY PLACE to go for sushi/japanese food. They are hands down the BEST sushi place in all of PHILADLEPHIA. Their fish is always fresh & tasty - they even smoke their own salmon! The Cap'nCrunch roll rocks - when we go there we just order a bunch of those before placing our "real" order. They have a HUGE menu so i f you are not into sushi you have lots of other choices.
