Wally is right - I got a lot of love for Mr. Wonton. Yes, there is better Chinese food in NYC (duh). But Mr Wonton is: 1) Fast (I get off the subway, I phone in my order, and by the time I walk to the restaurant it is ready for pickup) 2) Fresh (veggies are crisp, not overcooked, not soaked in glutenous mystery sauce. Chicken with chinese broccoli is an apartment favorite). 3) Cheap (Ok, it's not an F word, but it is an oasis in a land of overpriced yuppiedom. But not TOO cheap, if you know what I mean. Most of this food ranges from bad to mediocre (one salad (NOT FROM MR WONTON) had a nail in it! lol!), but not Mr. Wonton. NO SIR! I'll just head right into the dishes I had last night: General Tsos Tofu - Creamy, warm tofu nestled inside a semi-mushy semi-crusty crust. Sticky, sweet, purpley sauce. HEAVENLICIOUS! Boneless Braised Duck - Unbelievably rich. So fatty, meaty, yummy, and different! A unique dish (it's also about 2x the price of all the other dishes, but WHATEVS). Order this **NAO**. Broccoli in Garlic Sauce - Wow! So good! Unlike most places, this actually has garlic flavor. A great sauce plus fresh broccoli equals YUMTOWN. I'm also very fortunate in that I really like broccoli - it came with both of the other dishes! This place is definitely not the cheapest, but the quality is high and the delivery seems fast. Since I moved to Park Slope, I've been searching for good General Tso's Tofu: fried, light, crispy, with just the right amount of delicious sauce. I finally found it! In general, their food is delicious, and on top of that the service is great. Things are a little slower, but in a nice way. They also have a full section of vegetarian food, which I appreciate. I went to Mr. Wonton for the first time last night, and it is now officially my new go-to Chinese restaurant. Right off the bat, I was excited when our waitress set down a bowl of crispy noodles and duck sauce. According to my Queens-born boyfriend, this is common in NYC chinese restaurants, but since I am from Massachusetts originally, it was a delightful surprise. We ordered fried dumplings, beef chow fun, and the crispy honey chicken. The beef chow fun was standard...good, but not mindblowing. The dumplings, and chicken, however, were another story. I can't remember the last time I had dumplings so perfectly crispy and delicious! You could tell that they were right out of the fryer, yet somehow they weren't greasy at all. The crispy honey chicken was also outstanding; it tasted like a milder General Tso's, yet somehow the lack of spiciness, which is usually requirement for me, did not hinder my enjoyment. Yes, I've had better Chinese food, but definitely not for the price! The Lunch special at Mr. Wonton runs from 11-4pm every day except Sunday (oh, the rare Saturday lunch special!!) and gets you a huge portion of one of about 15 entree choices (much more than just your sweet and sour chicken or General Tso's) and a pint of either egg-drop or hot and sour soup for about $7. Very consistent and it's a step and a half ahead of the typical New York City greasy "Chinese" restaurant. Service is friendly and fairly quick. I enjoyed the tofu and broccoli dish they had. The wonton soup was ok, the wontons were at least fresh and not the usual folded cardboard monstrosities filled with shredded pork that was probably frozen a few years ago. read more

I loved the steamed chicken dumplings. Also got a chicken& broccoli combo that was pretty good. The chunks of meat in the fired rice were actually meat and not gristly leftover scraps like some places. I would definelty come back for those dumplings! Delivery was really fast. read more

After living in the vicinity of Park Slope for about four years now, the life-partner and I finally visited this place a weekend ago. We had walked by it on many occasions and paid little mind to it since we had grown accustomed to Hunan Delight (also great food) on Union St. We finally decided to go in, it's a well-lit, simple and down to earth Chinese restaurant (like the kind most of us grew up going to), it doesn't have the low-lit modern-minimalist decor and music blaring in the background of a lot of the Asian food restaurants in the neighborhood, so it was a welcome change for us 30-something year olds looking for a nice homey place to stuff our faces. The food was great. We started out with the vegetable wonton, which although we had hoped would be fried ( yes, fried, go f**ck yourself if you're grossed out by that) they were actually steamed and served in a nice peanut sauce and turned out to be really good. My lover-companion had the Vegetarian Moo Shu Vegetables and I had the General Tso's Chicken (with white meat chicken as requested by me). I can't speak for my beloved's taste buds, but she seemed happy with it. As for my General Tso's... the sauce was great, the chicken was great, even the broccoli was great. We ordered from Hunan Wok but the food came from Mr. Wonton, which makes you wonder if Mr. Wonton hides under counters in other Chinese restaurants waiting for the phone to ring while somebody's in the bathroom. Then he runs out and makes you mediocre food with mystery meat, whatever he could get from the butcher where he was hiding out all day. The food wasn't anything special at all. We ordered beef and got something non-bovine. It did come quickly, but the vegetables were soggy, and the crispy noodles were stale. No good I tell you! No good! I'm a huge fan of cheap and good chinese take out. This is not it. It is cheap but not very good at all. Some of the items were passable (soup) but not memorable and the majority of the items we got were not good at all. Their menu is now in the recycling bin. I am usually someone that will try a place a couple of times in case they had a bad day but I will not with this one. Eeek. I was really hoping this place was a dumpling place considering the name but it's just a regular Chinese restaurant. The food was all just meh. There were so many people coming in for to-go order which means they must like it I guess but I'm sure there are way better places in the neighborhood just as convenient and if not shame on Park Slope for not providing. I've been coming here for years. I can honestly say I have never had a bad meal here. With that being said the food is better sitting down rather than having it delivered. It's definitely greasy, unhealthy chinese food (at least what I've gotten), but when the craving hits and I don't feel like shelling out major cash for Hunan Delight, Mr. Wonton delivers. I had a pretty terrible experience here. Bland, generic brown sauce reminded me of the food trucks in Philly that would cover anything you ordered with exactly the same thing. The long hair in the sauce was unpleasant, but didn't (couldn't) really lower the experience all that much more. read more

Solid choice for Chinese "comfort " food in Park Slope. Consistently fast and efficient service, I eat here almost weekly and have no complaints. Delicious, crispy general tso's chicken, the way it's supposed to be. I've had the pork and vegetable dumplings, steamed and fried, they are among the best I've had.
