I have a 1973 Toyota FJ40 that my kids are learning to use. The steering was a big problem for them because there's no power steering. If you're like me and have an unusual turbo diesel powered Land Cruiser you are just plain lucky to have anyone even know how to work on these things in the Bay Area. In 2007 I had the misfortune of trusting a "well regarded" FJ40 builder in Canada to make me one to order. It was to be a "turn key" rig that I could trust to get me to and back from Tierra del Fuego and was promised to me from this builder as being as such. What I received (and far past the original agreed upon delivery date) was far from complete or reliable. Since delivery on Oct 2009, my Land Cruiser has gone thru a series of visits to MUDRAK for the proper attention, repair, upgrades, and overhauls it needed to get it where it needed to be and should have been in the first place. Update: 1/12/15, just had my power steering done, what a difference! Thus far I've had Mudrak's do my suspension, disc front brakes, power steering, and a few other things. It is well worth the money to have all of the above mentioned things done by a professional outfit, Mudrak's. I purchased my first parts from Gary when I was 15 for my 69 FJ (windshield frame). 20 years later I'm stoked to have Mudrak's be able to help me with my Landcruiser needs! Gary is one of the most knowledgeable LandCruiser mechanics/builders in the States. He is very reliable and his work is absolutely top notch. I've been taking my FJ40 to him for years and have always been very impressed by everything he's done. He can source hard to find parts and is generally a huge pleasure to work with. My one reservation is that more often than not, I'll get an upfront quote for work to be done and the work that actually end up being done is significantly more expensive. I don't mind a whole lot, as Gary won't complete work that doesn't need to be completed, and what he does do is very well done. But occasionally I do wince a little when I get the final bill that is considerably more than initially estimated. By no means am I suggesting that the charges aren't valid, in fact if I had a regular shop do the same work it would cost a lot more and be of lesser quality. But over the years I've learned that what I'm going to pay is probably more than Gary initially estimates... That said, I will continue taking my vehicle here for many years to come. It's great having such a top notch FJ/HJ mechanic in the Bay Area. read more

1990 FJ62. It needs some work before I'm about to drive it across country, and my first mistake was not taking it to Gary and team. Steering knuckles redone, differential fluids replaced, mudflaps redone, and various other tedious little things that needed to be attended to - all for about 1/3 the price that other places quoted. They knew I only had one day to fix it, so they cleared out all other jobs to help me out. Then they loaned me a car so I could todle around Sonoma for the day. My first experience with Mudrak was a strange one. My '89 FJ62 had a busted tire and the spare wasn't roadworthy. I called my buddy Georg (another great cruiser guru) who recommended I contact Gary since he was a close towing distance from where we were stranded in Russian River. It was 7pm on a Sunday. By the time the tow truck arrived I was kinda nervous it would be too late to hit up Mudrak for a tire purchase. But Gary was responsive, cool and calm in our text conversations, and he has a mechanic who works most nights, so it wasn't a problem. At about 9:30 pm we pulled up. I can't remember the name of the mechanic who helped us, but he was AMAZING. It took him about 30 minutes to do everything we needed, with the efficiency, speed and beauty of a racing pit technician. So we came back to Gary to get the front of the cruiser rebuilt. It was a lot of work, but we got a great price. Now the steering is straight, the brake/accelerator pedals more balanced, and we have the peace of mind of taking care of a very special vehicle. Gary even threw in a replacement dashboard piece that he had around to take care of the aftermath of a radio theft. I'm looking forward to more (maintenance and upgrade) work on the cruiser with Gary. Who says that about autoshops?! Gotta love the Cruiser Community. read more

Once in a decade you run into a guy like Gary. I was in a serious stalemate with my FJ Cruiser. The back door was locked and wouldn't open. As a last resort I stopped by and saw Gary. All I really wanted was some guidance. He went one better, stopped what he was doing and opened the door, repaired the latch and I was on my way in about 30 min. We took our Toyota Land Cruiser here to begin preps for some extensive off roading over the summer. If you're a cruiser junkie you'll pull into this place and think you've gone to Yota heaven. Gary, the owner, is known all over the US for his knowledge (found him on ih8mud.com) and knows more about Land Cruisers than you probably know about yourself. Right? Really. Has loads of items in stock for off roaders, is the only US distributor for LC roof tents, can do any customization or restoration of your LC, and has about twenty cruisers at any given time (40's to 200's) lined up at his warehouse. And he did some work on our truck same day, at awesome rates. This isn't a mechanic's shop, this is a specialist's dream come true, replete with evidence of obsession and love of one's work from floor to ceiling. During the couple of hours at his shop his phone rang off the hook and there were four other people actually there with their vehicles waiting for just a chance to talk with him. His techs were super nice, helpful, and good at what they do - as opposed to disinterested, just collecting a paycheck kind of vibe I've gotten from most shop techs. I think Gary will be giving off roading trainings later this year also, which we're really looking forward to. So if you have a cruiser, or even a jeep or rover - and want to get your ride ready for 4x4 off roading, rock crawling, or expeditions, you really should at least talk with Gary - you'll learn so much and probably avoid making costly mistakes along the way. read more

I have read about Mudrak numerous times on FJ 60 forums but never had the chance to visit the shop or speak with them on the phone. I called to ask a question on the method for fixing the "oil galley" plug because mine had popped out when I started up the rig the night before. I bought a FJ55 with a bad transmission with the idea of swapping it out. After looking around for one I came across Mudrak and gave him a call. He gave me a very fair price over the phone and I told him I would be up the next day to pick it up. When I arrived he was preparing his rig for Rubithon but he took the time to hand pick his best used 3 speed out of about 15 different units. He also sold me a gasket set and a trailer hitch receiver that they fabricate on site. We talked about 55's for about half an hour and I gleaned a considerable amount of knowledge from him in that time. He also only added $50 to the quoted transmission price even though I had over $100 in additional parts as a kind of welcome to Land Cruiser's gift.
