Stopped by for the first time to try out this Indy staple. We all really loved the sweet old school flavor of the root beer. My daughter loved the salty fries and corn dog. As a Hoosier I felt it best to try out the tenderloin. My palate has definitely become more sophisticated over the years. I was very disappointed with the brick like chew the sandwich had. It might have been a bad cut of meat as my wife had more enjoyment in hers. We tipped off our afternoon of deep fry dancing with a "small" or of onion rings. Unless you're feeding a baseball team, go with the small order. The breading was very nice. They had a lot of crunch. It's a meal in itself. I somehow forgot about the mug n bun. I had recollected the last time I was here my 12 year old son was 2 so it has been a while. Well it looked the same and the real highlight is their root beer. Some of the best in town. I got a double burger basket. The burger wasn't too bad but not great a bit dry and probably held in a warmer for a while lacking juiciness. The fries were crinkle cut and they give you your own salt packet to season which i like as I don't like overly salted fries. The cole slaw option was great with a good balance of more vinegar to mayonnaise. I will go back at some point maybe in a few more years. read more

I grew up in small town, and we had drive-in's similar to Mug 'N' Bun nearby. (Question: Is there a rule stating that by opening up a drive-in, you must fry everything and produce your own root beer?) Pulling into the parking lot, I had a feeling my experience would be very similar to those I've had with similar establishments: greasy and pretty good. Doing my best to avoid the frozen processed items, I asked my server what was homemade. According to her, Mug 'N' Bun makes their own tenderloins, coney dogs, onion rings, and root beer. That helped narrow down my choices significantly. I settled on a tenderloin, onion rings, and root beer. A smile crept up when my server set up my tray against the window of my jar and plopped my food on it, and my jaw dropped when I saw how humongous my onion rings were. Everything was as expected, with the exception of the root beer that exceeded my original presumption. That full-bodied, sassafras-y nectar of the beverage gods was perfectly sweetened. The only way it could be better is with a scoop of ice cream...next time I suppose! When I arrived, I was very confused on where to go to place my order for take out. I could see 3 different buildings with the name Mug 'N' Bun on them. Where are there so many? I walked around the yellow one trying to find an order window without luck and just asked one of the waitresses where I could place an order. She said to just have a seat at one of the tables and someone will take my order there. The rest was easy peasy. The menu has the usual diner lineup - burgers, sandwiches, hot dogs, chicken and fish. Pizza puff $3.20 - Hard to do wrong, and they did not do it the hard way. It was good. My wife and I try to come here a couple of times per year, missing last year due to the pandemic. We had moved here from Muncie 25 years ago. We always order the same thing--coney dogs, fries, and root beer--looking forward to the meal each time. Today changed things somewhat. Being at the Drive-in area, there were menus or advertisements for certain foods along the outside of the building. Plenty of lighting was provided, and when you are ready to dine, you just turn on your headlights. The atmosphere was inviting and unique. Our server was young and polite. She was quite knowledgeable of the menu and gave thorough explanations and recommendations. After we ordered our food and drinks, we paid for our order, which was helpful. That way, we would not have to notify her again, unless something was wrong. The service was uncomplicated and timely, with no problems! We enjoyed it! The food was a reminder of family cookout times, and it was tasty! Our orders were simple drive-in food that consisted of a breaded tenderloin, and a shrimp basket. Both had coleslaw and fries. The tenderloin was big, at least twice the size of the bun! But there could have been more shrimp in the basket, with less fries. It just depends on what you prefer. Mug n' Bun does not seem to season their food, so if you are allergic or do not prefer that, it is a bonus! If you go (and you should) get the root beer, because it is the best I have had! Did we get crumbs all over? Without a doubt. Nobody eating there gave a crap about detailing anyway. Cars were a means to an end, the end being heart failure. Which brings us to the food itself. Fried mushrooms. Fried pickles. French fries, seasoned. They fried anything. And we ate it. Because it was delicious. I once got the breaded tenderloin. It was fried too. I got it to garnish the pickle and onion I ordered. Delightful. An ancient Hoosier delicacy. When we were done, a kindly waitress would come and take our tray away, by communicating to her with a type of Morse Code through the headlights on our automobiles. I have been here twice, the first time I was vegetarian and only hade the root beer and random fried veggies and mac and cheese bites. You can park your car and the waitstaff/bellhops come to your car or you can grab a spot at one of the picnic tables. The onion rings are some of the best freshly battered ones I have ever had, the root beer is pretty tasty, I am sure the root floats are the best in the Midwest, and the place just oozes nostalgia. I split the Mug 'N Bun burger which looks like the originator of the Big Mac and it was more than enough for two! There was a slice of plain white bread sandwiched between a bun, two patties, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onoions, and pickles. Whoa. Get here for a dying breed of burger/bellhop joints in the Midwest.
