This used to be my favorite restaurant growing up but over time it has lost its appeal to me. It's still a solid place to eat, but now that I have started to eat somewhat healthier, this would not be a choice of mine. The food: It's your typical drive in and diner type food. Burgers, sandwiches, hot dogs, fries, etc. It's nice that everything is made to order so you tell them exactly what toppings you want. I typically get a hot dog and side of fries. I also love the fried Mac n cheese bites. If you're looking for healthy food -- go elsewhere. The prices are extremely affordable. I LOVE the homemade root beer. I hardly even drink pop but this is one thing I will not go with out. Service: The service has always been good every time I have gone. They have also never messed up an order in all of the years I've gone. Atmosphere: There are 3 different places to eat. One choice is inside your car. They attach the food tray to your window and you turn on your headlights if you need something. Another choice is the outside area, which is just picnic tables and some umbrellas. I would NOT recommend this on a hot day. There are no ceiling fans even under the awning, and there can also be a pretty bad bee problem. However, if the weather is great, it's a nice place to sit. I usually opt for this choice. The last choice is the inside area. I tried this out once and turned around and went right back outside. It was like an oven in there and it was so loud from all of the other tables that it was completely unpleasant. read more

I have always loved when we end up making it to Mug N Bun. Something just so nostalgic about it! And how fun is it to get all kinds of different foods and the best root beer and The Tenderloin no words other then its a MUST have! And pair it with the onion rings it makes for a fantastic unhealthy nap inducing meal. We had the Funnel cake fries for dessert go ahead and get 2 orders at $2.30 for these yummy treats you are not going to want to share! Biggest FYI: make sure you have enough cash on hand for a tip. Came here for the first time today for lunch and I was very pleased! I was happy they had plenty of parking and they also have an outside area to eat, a drive in, and a dine in. I decided to do the drive in, and as soon as I pulled in, a waitress was out to greet me. She was super nice and quick. Their French fries are really good as well as their grilled cheese. They also gave me a reusable cup for my Pepsi which was a nice touch. I waited for my food for about 10 minutes which wasn't bad considering it was lunch time and about 5 cars had pulled in after me. The food was steaming through the bag so I knew it was super warm, but I was impressed that the food was still pretty hot when I got home (and NOT soggy like many other places)--and I live about 15 minutes from this place. I was sad when I got home because I forgot to ask for ketchup, but never fear; the great people at Mug N Bun provided me a large container full of ketchup in my bag, no questions asked! As someone from a small town, Mug N Bun is a refreshing restaurant to enjoy, as it is reminiscent of a local mom and pop restaurant in my hometown. This place will definitely remain at the top of my comfort food list and I know I'll be bringing friends here when we are looking for a cheap, good and filling meal! Yum!!! Food was pretty good! I'll break down the items that I got to try!!! Vanilla malt shake with extra malt was probably the best I have ever had!!! Delicious! Onion rings.... A bit greasy but pretty darn good! The batter was crispy!! And onion was just perfect and sweet! Cheese balls had a good flavor, but it wasn't hot enough. The 'eat in car' and picnic table options are handy and open ( 3/31/21) AND so is the dine in building to the east across the parking lot. Waitress DAWN is a delight. I watched her spray and clean every table and chairs when folks left after eating. The food: SUPER. We have the famous hand-battered onion rings. One single order for two was way plenty - took the left-overs home for lunch. Tenderloins great. AND FROSTY MUGS OF HOME MADE ROOTBEER. SO GOOD. Would not be the month of May in Indianapolis without a trip to Mug 'N' Bun in good old Speedway, Indiana. Don't come here if you are expecting a fancy dining experience by any means, just come if you enjoy delicious (albeit fattening) food. They're famous for a lot of things - tenderloins, burgers, onion rings, root beer, milkshakes - and for good reason - all of those menu options are pretty dang good. Is it your calorie intake for the next three days? Yes, but SO WORTH IT. Stick with what they're famous for, and you should be pleased with your order. Keep in mind the side orders are HUGE, fries and onion rings are both big enough to share with 2, if not 3, people. When I was younger and was only allowed one "treat" with my meal, I had a hard time choosing between the mug of ice cold root beer and a delicious milkshake, so I compromised and got a root beer float with vanilla ice cream. The float is good - but now that I'm older, why not get a mug of root beer with my meal and get a peanut butter shake to go? You can order in/eat in your car, or alternatively, you can eat at picnic tables on the side of the building. Both are good options, but you have to experience eating in your car here at least once. I will ALWAYS sing Mug 'N' Bun's praises and encourage anyone to make the trip out to the Westside to enjoy this Indy staple. I couldn't even complete half of them. The quantity is huge and it was a delightful lunch. The ambience is great. It has this old 90's touch. Sweet! But there is one more thing! Old fashion drive-in restaurants rock. Order the root beer, the tenderloin and the onion rings! The root beer was so good we purchased a gallon to take home with us. The onion rings had this fantastic light beer battered flavor, and the tenderloin wasn't dry or overcooked like you might expect. Plus you get to pick your condiments, a definite plus. They take debit cards! You have three choices for dining: (1) Drive up in your car. Keep your lights on. Someone will walk out to your car, you order. Then turn off your lights. Then they bring your food on a tray that hangs over your window which should be only slightly rolled up. Then you pay. When you are done (or if you want something else) turn your lights back on. They will come back out and take everything away. Go home happy! (2) Park your car in the lot. Walk around to the picnic table area with the rainbow colored umbrellas. Someone will come out to the tables. (3) Park your car in the lot. Walk into the white building that says Dine In. Rumor has it they give you mini-mugs of root beer which are laced with crack to get you addicted. Clever clever. One comment about the location... if you're near the Speedway you MUST drive here. It's completely worth it and easy to get to. If you're in Downtown Indianapolis and your GPS tells you to take 10th street the entire way don't listen. This place is really cute and has a bit of retro charm. The food will slowly kill you but it's pretty damn delicious! They serve beer as well as tasty drive-in style food so they are usually packed on the weekends. My particular order went as such: The root beer was good but not insanely good, as others have told me it would be. I ordered a cheeseburger kids meal and got a huge adult size burger and a basket of fries, which is great if you're starving, but kinda defeated the purpose of me ordering the kids size since I actually wanted a smaller portion. My small chocolate shake was basically a medium shake and was delicious. My boyfriend ordered the chili cheese fries and was happy to learn that they would substitute the nacho cheese goop for some shredded cheese instead. The cheese fries were pretty good. In the past I had great experiences at Mug n Bun, the food was great and it was and is still a staple of many on the west side. However, my families last experience was disappointing. The quality of the food was not as great as it had been on previous occasions. I usually get a burger and my wife gets the tenderloin and we share an order of fried mushrooms. Unfortunately, everything did not taste of the same quality that we had before. We will have to try it again to see if it is a change of product, hopefully that is not the case. Mug N Bun is one of the most iconic places in all of Indy - it's been open for 40+ years! Nothing about it looks updated which I love. It's that old iconic drive-in for greasy [horrible-for-you-cheat-day] foods, and some of the best [if not the best] root beer around! The menu is quite simple and everything is well-priced, especially if you go for the family-size options to share. I always recommend the onion rings and a burger and a biiiiiiig root beer, solely for the refillable cup you receive. Many a-friends of mine love the tenderloin and their shakes. Not really sure why this place gets so much hype. It's an older establishment known predominantly for their root beer (which is pretty good and they have a diet version). Having been here before I knew what to expect, but went I for lunch with co workers to try it out again. It was raining outside so we opted to sit indoors. There was only one server working inside- which was fine bc there weren't many customers. She let us pick our seats before asking for our orders. She wasn't very friendly but you don't really go here for the stellar service. I honestly just don't understand how this place is charging people extra just to get lettuce or tomatoes on their sandwich. The prices aren't that high but they really need to realize that most people expect these toppings to be included in the price. I got the chicken sandwich and reluctantly added my toppings. And I also got a side of sweet potato fries. The food came out rather quickly but she literally just sat the tray on the table and walked away! I was shocked! Living in Indy my whole life I have never eaten here until now. I sure miss drive in restaurants. We sat outside and got waited on pretty quickly. I had the fish sandwich since I don't eat meat. It was good and worth the couple bucks. I loved the onion rings. A regular sack is enough for 2 or even 3 ppl. The root beer is delicious. It almost has a butterscotch flavor. Seriously so good. I also figured my diet was down the drain so I went for the peanut butter shake. It was so good. The only thing I wish I knew is you can only tip in cash. Returned to Mug N Bun last night, Saturday, June 04, 2016, with my dad and my nephew. I was hungry for this ever since I started talking about it the night before. I brought my nephew here once when he was small. Now that he is older, he has graduated from wanting chicken fingers to going for the pork tenderloin. I called ahead and they were open until 10:30, so that must be the summer weekend hours. It had been raining a lot, but cleared up by the time we pulled in. There were a few puddles, but pretty pleasant weather, good for eating in the car with the windows down. It wasn't packed, but more cars had arrived before we left. I had already gone over the menu online beforehand, but from where we were parked this time, I could see the menus outside pretty well. Dad thought some lit-up menus would help with visibility. My nephew got the breaded tenderloin sandwich with cheese and french fries, also with cheese. From what he said, it was a cup of nacho cheese. He ended up putting that on his tenderloin, too. Dad got potato wedges, coleslaw and a mug of root beer. I got potato wedges and an order of mushrooms. The potato wedges weren't QUITE what I was expecting. They have a zesty batter on the outside. They were alright though and we were provided with a couple of big cups of ketchup. I'm not always a huge ketchup fan, but theirs is pretty good. It also helped cool down my wedges a bit. Mushrooms were good, too. Even though I let them sit a few minutes, they were still pretty hot, but I was careful not to burn myself too bad. (The mushroom-lover's dilemma.) The mushrooms here surpass all others I remember having elsewhere. We could tell that Mug N Bun must change their oil regularly as well. Dad liked the coleslaw and I heard no complaints about the wedges. Food wasn't super fast, but it was piping hot and fresh. Well worth the wait. Mine definitely needed the provided salt, but I am glad they don't overdo the sodium like some places that make fries, etc. inedible. Our total was a little over $22, not including tip. The testimony to their tenderloin, which I have never had myself, is in the following: My nephew asked if he could get a second. He is a growing boy with a high metabolism, and also really loved their sandwich. On the second one, he just asked for nacho cheese. When it was ready, a cup of cheese was brought out, so he had to spread it on with the spoon he found in the glovebox. It was $5.2? so over a dollar was added for cheese, plus some tax I am assuming. (Reminder that, while they accept cards, they will only take cash for tips.) Overall, pretty reasonable prices and good portions. They also have family size on a lot of the sides, if not all. There are a lot of unique menu items that would be fun to try. Older building that certainly shows it age though it is an Indy icon and close to home. Perfect for a night out with the family. Tenderloins so good you just might have to have another before you go home. I was glad to make more memories and share Mug N Bun with the younger generation. I can't wait to bring my tiny niece sometime. I feel like we have started off the summer-season right. read more

I have been eating here for over 50 years. The last few times have been very poor. The root beer is still the best, but the quality of the food has slipped terribly. My first complaint is that they serve the root beer long before the food. Fifteen minutes later most of the root beer is gone and they do not give refills. My foot long coney last week was cold. Tonight my grandson's was also cold as was my hamburger. We ordered fries and they were not in the order. They came after we were finished with the rest of the order. I didn't see any signs saying that they accepted credit cards so I made the assumption that they did not (wrong) and limited my order based on the amount of cash I had on me. When she arrived with my order (a super burger and small fries that actually turned out to be quite massive) and told me that they did accept ccs, I added a large house made root beer as well. Root beer has never really been my thing but I wanted to try theirs and I was glad I did. I really liked this place and hope to return soon with the boyfriend in tow when its a little cooler out so we can order and eat in the car they way that they intend you to. My 1st stop while visiting Indianapolis, just to sample their homemade root beer. It is is a very creamy root beer, and very sweet of course. Their small to go size comes out to $1.96. Service, the carhop, was friendly and fast. You can tell they have been here a long time, since they own a pretty good chunk of land and have 3 separate buildings, depending on what you want to order. one building for the drive in, one for dine in service, and one restaurant in the rear for pizza and tenderloin sandwiches. Mug 'n' Bun is an Indianapolis staple! It's a greasy spoon, no doubt, but it is also a charming drive up. You pull up to the building, park, and within a minute or less someone is at your window to take your order. It's almost like eating in the comfort of your home only it's your car! My favorites are the fried cauliflower and the root beer. The cauliflower because it's delicious and I feel like I'm eating healthy? But the root beer.... it was the only soda I liked growing up and that's mostly still true today. Theirs is special though. They make it themselves so they've mastered the art of rootbeer. I really am not sure how to describe root beer but it's spicy, creamy, but for me, it's so nostalgia in a glass. I couldn't make up my mind while there so we went ahead and ordered a foot long cony dog, their famous tenderloin, pizza burger, crinkle fries, and cheese balls. Yes, for only two people we got a lot of food; and it was all delicious! The reason for my 4 stars was just due to the outside seating area feeling a little grimy to me. Most of the picnic tables were dirty and needed a good wipe down as well as trash being scattered about. One of the waitresses eventually swept the trash up while we sat there though.
